Texans pick Travon Walker, Trevor Penning in USA TODAY Sports mock draft

The Houston Texans grab DE Travon Walker and OT Trevor Penning in the first round in the latest USA TODAY Sports mock draft.

The Houston Texans’ twin first-round picks in the 2022 NFL draft represent an opportunity to add the best talent to a roster that is basically a blank canvass. The extra talent is a chance for general manager Nick Caserio to finally paint a masterpiece in Houston.

According to Joel Erickson from USA TODAY Sports, the Texans start off the draft by taking former Georgia defensive end Travon Walker with the No. 3 overall pick.

With needs covering almost the entire roster and the team’s lone star, Laremy Tunsil, entrenched at left tackle, the Texans bet on upside, taking the athletic potential of Walker and hoping he can be the next superstar in a long line of franchise pass rushers in Houston.

Guard-tackle Ikem Ekwonu from NC State is still on the board, and goes the very next pick to the New York Jets. The New York Giants take cornerback Ahmad Gardner the very next pick thereafter.

By the time Houston gets to select at No. 13 overall, the commitment to shore up the offensive line is still there, and the Texans take former Northern Iowa tackle Trevor Penning.

Laremy Tunsil has the blindside of Davis Mills locked down, but the Texans need help on the other side, where NFL teams are deploying their best pass rushers more often. Penning’s a powerful, nasty blocker who can give Houston the edge protection it needs.

Adding Penning would kick former 2019 first-round pick Tytus Howard back inside to guard. It would also give the Texans some flexibility moving forward as they could pick up Howard’s fifth-year option and move on from Tunsil in the 2023 offseason. Penning would still be on his rookie deal to provide effective bookends for Houston’s offensive line.

One offensive lineman for the Patriots to pick in every round of the 2022 NFL draft

Let’s look at the depth in the draft, from top to bottom.

The New England Patriots don’t seem to have settled their plan for their offensive line, with arguably just four starting-caliber players on the roster. The draft might be the key avenue for the Patriots to finalize the group.

The Patriots will have tackles Isaiah Wynn and Trent Brown, guard Michael Onwenu and center David Andrews. New England is as good as anyone at drafting and developing interior offensive linemen, so it feels inevitable that the team takes a guard during the 2022 NFL draft.

But that’s not the only offensive line issue they might address. In 2023, the Patriots will have to decide what to do with Wynn, who might prove expensive to extend for a long-term deal. Might the Patriots draft a tackle, Wynn’s eventual replacement?

Let’s look at offensive linemen the Patriots could take in every round of the 2022 NFL draft.

Panthers reportedly ‘love’ Northern Iowa OT Trevor Penning

Based off a few clues from Tuesday, Panthers fans might want to get a little more familiar with OT Trevor Penning before Thursday night.

When it comes to the top prospects of the 2022 NFL draft, do the Carolina Panthers love them or do they love them not? As of now, considering that it’s very much smokescreen season, it’s hard to tell.

But Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network reported that one of the players the Panthers may be gaga over is offensive tackle Trevor Penning. Wilson wrote that the Northern Iowa product could be a trade-down target on Thursday for Carolina, who currently holds the sixth overall selection.

“’The Panthers love Penning,’ a source said. ‘He’s also a Ravens type of guy with a similar type of tough-guy attitude to Marshal Yanda.’

“Penning patterns his game after Titans offensive tackle Taylor Lewan, who plays the game with a similar style.

“’We were watching NFL film and trying to learn how to do wide-zone and watched Taylor Lewan and Rodger Saffold a lot,’ Penning said during the Senior Bowl. ‘They were mauling people. It was really fun to watch.’”

Speaking of mauling, Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer may jump at the opportunity of said trade-down scenario. As he stated in his pre-draft presser on Tuesday, the front office believes they could have “three to four” teams seriously interested in a swap up to that No. 6 pick.

He also said he’d be fine with trading down into the teens, which is likely the sweet spot for Penning, if the opportunity arose.

“I think the comfort level would be really in the teens, Fitterer said. “However, this is a large group. This is a unique group that between the 25 and 50 range, there are a lot of good players—more like foundation-type players. You wanna be disciplined in not trading out of those levels. But I think the teens, if I had to put a number on it, that would probably be the most comfortable spot.”

The key to such an outcome would be the landing spots for the top three offensive linemen of the class—Evan Neal, Ikem Ekwonu and Charles Cross. If the trio is swept up before the Panthers are on the clock, perhaps they’d be inclined to reset their deck and settle with Penning a bit later on.

Until then, we’re just plucking more pedals.

Pros and cons for 10 possible first-round targets for Chargers

Breaking down the positives and negatives of some of the most likely prospects for the Chargers in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft.

This week’s NFL draft is poised to be one of the more chaotic in recent memory. There are no premier quarterbacks to talk about, no clarity at No. 1 overall, and no two teams with the same set of prospects graded as first-rounders.

For teams like the Chargers holding on to a mid-first round pick, that means the intrigue is higher than ever. With that, here are ten prospects, ranked in order of likelihood, that the team could walk away from Thursday’s session with, including the pros and cons for each one.

Which prospects final 2022 mock drafts are linking to the Saints

A roundup of final 2022 NFL mock drafts and what they have the New Orleans Saints doing with their two picks on Thursday night, via @DillySanders:

The 2022 NFL draft is just a few days away, which means that draft analysts and local writers are getting all of their final mock drafts out for consumption. Unlike some teams, there does not seem to be much consensus around what the New Orleans Saints are going to do with their two first-round picks. Do they want two starters? A tackle and a wide receiver? Will they take neither? Will they take a quarterback? Do they need to trade up?

No one seems to know the answers for sure, but this is what NFL writers are saying about what could happen on Thursday night:

Saints trade up to pick the first wide receiver in new Draft Wire mock draft

Saints trade up and pick the first wide receiver off the board in new Draft Wire mock draft:

Here’s an interesting scenario: the New Orleans Saints’ need for a new wide receiver is so obvious that the latest mock draft over at Draft Wire has them trading up a few more spots to address the problem. Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling envisions the Saints being too anxious to wait for their receiver of choice to make it to them at No. 16, so he’s projected a trade with the Minnesota Vikings to get New Orleans on the clock at No. 12, giving up a mid-round pick along the way (the Saints could barter their third round pick at No. 98 or a fourth rounder at No. 120).

And that puts New Orleans in position to take the first receiver off the board: Ohio State Buckeyes prospect Garrett Wilson. Here’s what Easterling wrote of the move:

“With Stingley and Hamilton both off the board, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Vikings tried to move back and grab an extra pick instead of reaching here. This year’s loaded receiver class hasn’t been touched yet, and a team like the Saints could leap up the board to get first dibs.

Wilson’s explosiveness and big-play ability would be the perfect pairing with a physical possession target like Michael Thomas, giving Jameis Winston a strong 1-2 punch. Moving up four spots shouldn’t cost the Saints much more than a mid-round pick at this point in the draft.”

I’ve been begging for the Saints to invest in one of the top rookie receivers all offseason, so this is great. Wilson is a tremendous prospect who could help Winston play the best football of his career while taking pressure off of Michael Thomas to do everything on his own after being two years removed from his last healthy game.

Personally, I don’t see Wilson as the draft’s best receiver — Chris Olave outplayed him for three years in the same offense at Ohio State. But I won’t complain if Wilson ends up with New Orleans instead. Both of them are great prospects who could immediately help the Saints offense get back on its feet. I just like Olave better for his greater experience (having appeared in 47 games against Wilson’s 33) and stronger body of work in college.

So what does Easterling have the Saints doing with their other first-round pick? He predicts New Orleans to stay put at No. 19 and take the best available prospect, and they end up seeing Northern Iowa left tackle Trevor Penning fall to them:

“After trading up to land a big-play receiver, the Saints keep building around Jameis Winston with this pick, landing a potential franchise left tackle to replace Terron Armstead.

Penning still needs a ton of refinement when it comes to his technique, but his physical traits give him tons of potential. It’ll take some patience and quality coaching, but Penning could develop into a dominant force at the next level.”

Left tackle is one of the team’s greatest areas of concern after receiver, so this would be a good pick — even if Penning isn’t ready to start right away. The Saints have paid James Hurst well to hold down that job if needed, and that could buy time for Penning to work on his mechanics in practice so he can better harness his athleticism. And, hey, maybe he’s further along than we think and wins the starting job in training camp — allowing Hurst to go put out another fire and maybe push Cesar Ruiz for the starting gig at right guard.

What’s evident from this mock draft is that the Saints have options, and they can turn to other directions to address their needs. If one door closes another one could open. That’s why the Saints made the trade for a second first-round pick in the first place.

Should Cowboys consider Trevor Penning for Tyron Smith’s eventual replacement?

Tyler Browning ( @DiabeticTyler ) takes a look at the offensive lineman out of Northern Iowa, who plays with a nasty streak. Where should he be picked?

With the Dallas Cowboys moving on from La’El Collins and the injury history of long-time tackle Tyron Smith; Cowboys fans shouldn’t be surprised if the Cowboys decide to address the offensive line early on in the 2022 draft. Northern Iowa offensive tackle Trevor Penning has been a three-year starter and has built up quite the reputation as a player with a mean streak. He is known for finishing people in the ground, and it was on display at the Senior Bowl.

He also had a chance to show his athleticism for NFL scouts and executives at the NFL combine where he impressed with his athleticism. The monkey in the room? He’s projected to go high, comes from a smaller school and wasn’t invited to Texas for an official visit. Did the Cowboys make a mistake in not doing so? Is he impressive enough to be drafted despite those warning signs?

6 questions that the Chargers must answer during 2022 NFL draft

As the Chargers head into the draft, there are still some questions regarding the roster. Here are six that will be presented and analyzed.

Rosters across the league have started to take shape via free agency, giving us a more accurate picture of each team’s needs and which questions remain as we head into the 2022 NFL draft.

It’s no different for head coach Brandon Staley’s Chargers, who are currently in good shape after the additions of Khalil Mack, J.C. Jackson, Sebastian Joseph-Day, and Austin Johnson, among others.

However, some questions from the start of the off-season are left to be answered. Here’s a look at what should become more clear when Los Angeles is on the clock next week.

Ravens 2022 draft prospect profile: OT Trevor Penning

We look at a Ravens 2022 draft prospect profile for offensive tackle Trevor Penning

The Baltimore Ravens have seen the offensive tackle position become a need after the injury to All-Pro Ronnie Stanley. The team has seen Stanley play just one game in one and a half seasons, which now means they need to invest in the offensive tackle position in a big way.

One of the avenues to adding talent on their line would be through the draft. In the 2022 draft class there are plenty of great prospects at the position, including former University of North Iowa star Trevor Penning.
