Touchdown Wire predicts another dreadful 3-13 season for Redskins

Many people think the Redskins will be better in 2020, but there’s a growing narrative that they’ll fail to show much improvement.

A new coaching staff and fresh regime have instilled the Washington Redskins with an influx of confidence for the future seasons. With quarterback Dwayne Haskins at the helm, a solid stable of offensive stars around him, and a dominant defense doing its thing, a feeling that this team can finally crawl out of the league’s basement is everpresent in Washington.

Be careful about getting your hopes up too early, though. The 2020 season could potentially be another tough one to watch.

When the NFL schedules were released last week, we predicted that the Redskins would go 5-11 next year, missing the playoffs once again, of course. ESPN predicted 6-10. Now that some time has passed, USA TODAY’s Touchdown Wire has given their two cents, and they think Washington will finish at 3-11, right back where they were in 2019.

Ron Rivera is taking on a rebuilding project in Washington. He will have Chase Young to add to the defense. Another Ohio State product, Dwayne Haskins, could be the biggest challenge for Rivera if Washington doesn’t look to add a savvy veteran. Cam Newton, anyone?

If we were forced to look on the bright side, enduring another dreadful 3-11 season would likely put the Redskins in contention for the No. 1 overall draft pick, where they could select Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, or Oregon LT Penei Sewell — two prospects that everyone is already clamoring over, even a year out. Those of you who are now screaming that the Redskins don’t need Lawrence because they have Haskins, it’s important to realize that, if Washington were to end up with the No. 1 pick in 2021, it’s likely because Haskins failed to make a leap in Year 2, and the team is justified in searching for his replacement.

Of course, we can hope that all of this is just conjecture, and the Redskins 2020 season closer follows the ESPN prediction, rather than the Touchdown Wire prediction. If not, it could be another long year ahead of us.

ESPN has Redskins drafting with the No. 2 overall pick again in 2021

Just weeks after drafting Chase Young at No. 2 overall, the Redskins are being projected to finish at the same place in 2021 again.

The Washington Redskins may be new and improved in 2020, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to be good.

After the 2020 schedule was released on Thursday night, many media pundits — including ourselves — made predictions on what their final record would be when all is said and done. Most people have the Redskins pegged for 5-6 wins. ESPN’s latest draft order projection doesn’t give them as much credit.

The Redskins are projected by ESPN to have the No. 2 overall pick once again in 2020, finishing one spot behind the Carolina Panthers. It isn’t so much the defense that causes the uncertainty, but the unknown development of QB Dwayne Haskins and the offense that leaves a lot left to be desired.

We forecast that the Redskins’ defense will improve in 2020, so the issue here is offense and specifically quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Haskins was the least valuable quarterback in the league last season according to both Football Outsiders’ DVOA and ESPN’s QBR. Haskins still has potential, and it’s wrong to write off a young quarterback completely after one bad half-season. Nevertheless, the record of young quarterbacks with similar performances is not a good one.

That’s not a good list to be on. Jared Goff and Alex Smith became capable NFL starters, and Matthew Stafford was close to making this list as a rookie. But overall, quarterbacks who play as poorly as Haskins do not develop into stars. Of course, part of Haskins’ poor performance was the lack of talent around him, but Washington didn’t exactly stock its lineup with new weapons this offseason. Cody Latimer isn’t changing much.

Best-case scenario: Washington’s defensive front full of first-round picks matures and coheres all at once, similar to the San Francisco defensive front a year ago. Chase Young has Nick Bosa’s rookie season. Haskins takes dramatic strides forward in his second season, following the path of Goff and Stafford instead of the path of Blaine Gabbert and Blake Bortles.

It may be tough to sit through another disastrous season that lands Washington with one of the top overall picks, but as there was in 2019, there will be the same in 2020 — a light at the end of the tunnel. A top-two pick means the Redskins will have the chance to draft either Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, or Oregon LT Penei Sewell, two incredible prospects who have a chance to completely turn around a franchise.

Panthers projected to pick first in the 2021 NFL draft

The Carolina Panthers will pick first in the 2021 NFL draft according to a projection by Aaron Shatz at Football Outsiders.

The Carolina Panthers will pick first in the 2021 NFL draft according to a projection by Aaron Shatz at Football Outsiders.

While it’s exciting to think about a potential No. 1 overall pick, this obviously means Carolina would finish with the worst record in the league this coming season. The main problem FO foresees for the Panthers is a weak defensive unit, which they predict will rank No. 32 in DVOA this year, per ESPN.

“The biggest problem for the Panthers is going to be their defense, which has the worst DVOA projection in the league. Carolina already ranked 25th in defensive DVOA a year ago, but from that defense the Panthers have subtracted nine different players with at least 4 approximate value . . . last season according to Pro Football Reference.”

The model also projects Carolina will have the No. 32-ranked special teams unit in the NFL and the hardest schedule by their numbers.

While it wouldn’t come as a shock to see the Panthers finish last, we think they have the potential to win six games in 2020.

The greatest factor in that will be how well Matt Rhule, Joe Brady and Phil Snow perform in their respective roles. This coaching staff doesn’t have a lot of pro experience, but if they’re willing to buck traditional wisdom and truly embrace analytics while establishing a strong culture, a 6-10 (or better) record is definitely a possibility.

As important as coaching is though, talent is what wins games. This franchise is entering a rebuilding period and fans should temper their expectations. Right now, this roster is easily the worst in a tough NFC South division and possibly the weakest in the conference, as well.

On the bright side, if the model is correct then the Panthers will be in an ideal spot to land a new franchise quarterback. Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence is the top prospect in the 2021 class.

Exploring emergency options if the Jarrett Stidham experiment blows up

If the Jarrett Stidham era is short-lived, there are other emergency backup options for the New England Patriots in 2020.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick may be a mad man in the science lab, but don’t think for one second he isn’t mulling over a proper Plan B option as a precaution to the Jarrett Stidham experiment blowing up in his face.

Not even goggles, latex gloves and a long-sleeved hoodie would save him from wearing the stench from that sort of explosion.

Belichick had every opportunity to come to terms on an extension with longtime star quarterback Tom Brady. At the very least, Brady’s presence would have given the team more time to plan for the future, while also giving them a legitimate shot at competing in the present. Belichick could have also been more aggressive in the 2020 NFL Draft by selecting one of the top-tier options at quarterback, but he chose to use his first-round pick to trade back in an effort to acquire more draft capital.

Any doubts of his belief in the former fourth-round pick out of Auburn University should be dead in the water at this point. Even after losing the greatest quarterback in NFL history, it’s still business as usual for the Patriots organization.

But that all could change if Stidham stinks it up on the football field.

The Patriots are flying by the seat of their pants of an uncertain 2020 season. If things take a turn for the worse, Belichick will change directions faster than he can say “Stid.” Here are some emergency options if Plan A implodes.

Let the ship sink for Trevor Lawrence

This is the most un-Belichick choice on the list, but it doesn’t make it any less of a possibility. The Patriots could always throw in the towel on the 2020 season. Imagine Belichick standing idly by as the violins play and his championship fleet sinks.

It would almost be as bad as a head coach benching one of his best defensive players in a Super Bowl and losing the game because of it—oh, wait.

Unless another Joe Burrow emerges, it’s safe to assume Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence will be the coveted prize in the 2021 NFL Draft. That sort of generational talent paired with the likes of Belichick is the nightmare that keeps 31 other teams up at night. It would give the Patriots a legit shot at rebooting the championship juggernaut with a fresh, young face as the centerpiece.

Make no mistake, Stidham succeeding as the leading man would be a huge win for Belichick. Just don’t expect to see the lifeboats coming if things take a disastrous turn.

USA TODAY’s ‘Way-too-early 2021 Mock’ has Redskins taking QB Trevor Lawrence No. 1

After having Chase Young fall into their lap in 2020, the Redskins might get lucky again in 2021 with a clear shot to draft Trevor Lawrence.

The rich get richer in the NFL sometimes, don’t they?

That seems to be an absolutely insane statement to say about the Washington Redskins, but when you consider that DE Chase Young fell into their laps with the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the guy they are being mocked to get in 2021 may be just as good.

Our friends over at USA TODAY’s Draft Wire recently released their version of a ‘Way too Early 2021 Mock Draft,’ using Vegas Super Bowl odds to determine the order. Unfortunately for the Redskins, they come in last place. Fortunately, that means that Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence is coming to Washington with the No. 1 overall pick.

If you don’t know much about Lawrence, we wrote this earlier in the week when questioning if the Redskins might be apart of the ‘Lose for Lawrence’ sweepstakes:

Above all other prospects stands Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence, who stole the show in 2018 when he burst onto the scene and won a National Championship in his freshman year. He almost followed it up again this past year, losing to Joe Burrow and LSU in the championship game. There will obviously be other big names in the class, but it seems like a foregone conclusion that Lawrence will be the first player taken off the board, and teams will likely Lose for Lawrence in the NFL this year, much like they Tanked for Tua last year.

At 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, Lawrence has a rocket-arm and an immaculate mane of hair. He is almost guaranteed to be the top quarterback taken off the board in 2021, and should the team at No. 1 be in need, he’ll most definitely be taken then. So will the Redskins be in need of a QB? Well, we can’t quite answer that question yet, but it’s not crazy to think. Though we saw some growth from Dwayne Haskins near the end of his rookie year, and all signs point towards him improving in 2020, there are still some doubts that he can be everything that Washington envisioned when drafting him at No. 15 overall in 2019. So if Haskins fails to make the leap, and the Redskins have a chance to draft one of the best QB prospects since Andrew Luck, what do they do? Some may think it’s a tough decision; I think it’s a great problem to have.

NFL considering Saturday regular-season games if college football is postponed this fall

NFL considering Saturday regular-season games if college football is postponed this fall

The NFL loves to be out in front and another league’s loss will always be there gain.

With some discussions being held about possibly postponing the 2020 college football season due to the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL is prepared to allow flexibility in the upcoming in case teams need to play regular-season games on Saturday according to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post.

With the NFL expected to release its schedule soon, its officials have discussed giving the league some flexibility to move games to Saturdays during the season if college football postpones its entire season, according to sources.

The NFL has had preliminary discussions with its broadcast partners about the idea. An NFL spokesman declined to comment.

It is currently unknown whether or not college football will be played in 2020 with many Power-5 commissioners believe campuses will have to be opened up first before such a thing can be considered.

Could the Redskins find themselves in the Trevor Lawrence Sweepstakes in 2021?

The Redskins likely won’t be very good in 2020, so it could shake out that they have a chance to draft QB Trevor Lawrence in 2021.

We may have just finished with the 2020 NFL Draft, but it’s never too early to start looking ahead to next year, is it?

The 2021 NFL Draft is already getting broken down by a number of draft analysts, and it’s set to be one of the more entertaining classes we’ve seen in a while, judging by the talent at the top.

So what are the chances that the Washington Redskins are one of those teams that finds themselves in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes a year from now? It might be more likely than you thought, according to our friends over at USA TODAY’s Touchdown Wire.

Ron Rivera did not draft Dwayne Haskins. If the new Washington coach gets the feeling the former Ohio State quarterback is not the answer, he isn’t going to wait around and watch Haskins fail. A season like 2019 and Washington could be in a position to choose Lawrence. Lets’s only point to Arizona and Josh Rosen and Kyler Murray to realize how fast the QB carousel whirls.

This is not to say that the Redskins would be intentionally losing to have a chance at Lawrence, but it could happen for no other reason than they’re bad again in 2020. Most preseason projections have them slotted to finish in the bottom five teams of the league, and some Vegas Sportsbooks have made them one of the favorites to finish 2020 with the most losses in the NFL.

So what if the Redskins lucked into both Chase Young and Trevor Lawrence in two years? Man, would that be something? I’ll tell you one thing — if Washington can’t find a way to make the playoffs with both Young and Lawrence on their roster, the teams should be stolen away from Dan Snyder and given to someone else.

9 teams likely to be in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes

Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence looks like the grand prize in the 2021 NFL Draft. What teams look like they will be in play to draft him?

We know the 2021 NFL Draft will be in Cleveland from April 29-May 1. Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence appears to be the top prize … if the team with the top pick needs a quarterback. What teams that will be seeking help at the position appear to be most likely to have a shot at Lawrence?

Carolina Panthers

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

How sweet would it be for the Panthers to have Trevor Lawrence simply shift his tack from North Carolina to South Carolina? Matt Rhule has plenty of leash when it comes to turning around a team that is sinking fast. Don’t expect miracles in his first year. And with Lawrence as the prize, losing could be a prize.

2021 NFL Draft – Any Notre Dame First Rounders?

I’m curious to see a year from now though if Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah ends up being a day one pick.  Koramoah had 8.5 sacks last season, twice recording three or more in the same game, doing so against Virginia Tech and having another 3.5 against Iowa State.

It’s way too early to be talking about the 2021 NFL Draft outside of a couple of things.

The year long debate is on as to who the better quarterback prospect is between Trevor Lawrence of Clemson and Justin Fields of Ohio State.  Lawrence enters as a slight favorite but not by nearly the amount he would have been viewed as a year ago.

What about Notre Dame?  Will the Fighting Irish see a player or two selected in the 2021 NFL Draft’s first round or will it be two straight seasons without a Notre Dame player getting their name called on day one?

Jason McIntyre of Fox Sports released his self-admitted too-early 2021 NFL Draft mock for the first round Monday.  In it he has Trevor Lawrence going first overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Justin Fields fourth to the Chicago Bears.

And to the Notre Dame question?

Left tackle Liam Eichenberg is the 16th player off his board as he has the offensive lineman headed to the New York Jets.

Looking around a couple sites today I’ve seen a few people throwing junk at the wall and hoping something sticks in terms of 2021 mock drafts.  They seem to think at this point Eichenberg is the best bet to be a day-one selection.  I don’t question that although I think his ability in the run game has a lot of catching up to do compared to his pass blocking.

I’m very curious to see a year from now though if Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah ends up being a day one pick.  Koramoah had 8.5 sacks last season, twice recording three or more in the same game, doing so against Virginia Tech and having another 3.5 against Iowa State.

Well-respected draft analyst Todd McShay thought the same a little over a month ago when he was trying to evaluate a few Notre Dame players for the 2020 NFL Draft.

I don’t know where most experts have Koramoah slotted right now but if there is such a thing I’d like to get in now on his draft stock because a year from now I have a strong feeling it’s going to be a lot higher.
