Former Bengals WR lands with new team after release

A player the Bengals let go has a new home in the NFC.

Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Trenton Irwin didn’t need long to find a new home after his release.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Irwin inked a deal with the Carolina Panthers to join their practice squad, with a quick activation to the 53-man roster planned.

Irwin was a mainstay over the last few years in Cincinnati. This one is notable for multiple reasons, though.

For one, Irwin had a pretty interesting comment about his release. And two, the Bengals opted to go another direction after recently putting in a waiver claim on Isaiah Williams.

Before Williams, names like Charlie Jones will still get the looks on special teams and as deep depth when healthy.

Panthers officially announce 2 additions on Tuesday

The Panthers officially announced their signings of WR/RB Velus Jones Jr. and WR Trenton Irwin.

The Carolina Panthers officially added a couple of wide receivers on Tuesday. (Well, maybe one wide receiver and one wide receiver/running back/return specialist.)

As announced this afternoon, the team has signed Velus Jones Jr. to their active roster and Trenton Irwin to their practice squad. Jones’ signing was first reported on by Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports while Irwin’s dropped via Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Jones, a former third-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2022, comes over from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ practice squad. In his three seasons and 27 appearances for the Bears, the 27-year-old speedster amassed 135 receiving yards and 165 rushing yards while averaging 26.7 yards per kick return (39 attempts) and 7.0 yards per punt return (five attempts).

He now fills the roster spot left vacant by rookie running back Jonathon Brooks, who has been placed on injured reserve with his ACL tear.

Irwin, who previously crossed paths with current Panthers offensive coordinator Brad Idzik during their time at Stanford University, has spent each of his six pro campaigns with the Cincinnati Bengals. He has recorded 46 receptions for 601 yards and five touchdowns.

To make room for Irwin on the practice squad, the Panthers released fellow wide receiver Dax Milne.

Carolina also signed defensive tackle Sam Roberts from their practice squad to the active roster. Defensive end DeShawn Williams, who appeared in 26 games for the team over the last two seasons, was waived to clear a spot for Roberts.

Panthers reportedly set to sign former Bengals WR

The Panthers are reportedly signing former Bengals WR Trenton Irwin.

The Carolina Panthers are about to reunite offensive coordinator Brad Idzik with a former pupil of his.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are signing wide receiver Trenton Irwin to their practice squad. Rapoport also notes that the team plans on quickly promoting the 29-year-old pass catcher to the active roster.

Irwin played his collegiate ball at nearby Stanford University—where he’d cross paths with Idzik, a graduate assistant at the time. In his four years there, from 2015 to 2018, he’d total 152 receptions for 1,738 yards and five touchdowns.

After spending his first NFL offseason as an undrafted free agent for the Miami Dolphins, Irwin eventually stuck on with the Cincinnati Bengals beginning in 2019. He’d appear in 41 games for the Bengals over his six-year pro career, recording 601 yards and five scores on 46 catches.

Irwin is set to become one of at least two additions on Tuesday for the Panthers, who are also expected to sign former Chicago Bears wide receiver/running back/return specialist Velus Jones Jr.

Joe Mixon has interesting comment for player just waived by Bengals

Joe Mixon is back (sort of) talking about the Bengals again.

When the Cincinnati Bengals waived wideout Trenton Irwin this week, the veteran had some pretty interesting things to say in his goodbye message to fans.

Below that message on social media, former Bengals running back Joe Mixon had some things to say, too.

Mixon wrote the following on the post: “Nahhhh that’s real tho TI you gone land on yo feet bro it only gets better I promise you”

Plenty of players past and present commented on the post.

Mixon is more notable than most, though. He just got done sharing some not-so-nice thoughts about the Bengals in a big interview and it’s not the first time he’s had some eyebrow-raising things to say about the team.

Among former Bengals, Mixon has by far been the most vocal since leaving in recent years. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, as it gives fans a look at how those around the team are feeling as things unfold, for better or worse.

Bengals waive player who immediately posts interesting comment about team

A player who just left the Bengals had some things to say.

The Cincinnati Bengals let wideout Trenton Irwin go on ahead of Week 14, waiving him and subjecting him to the wire.

After the news went live, Irwin took to Instagram with a pretty interesting comment.

Near the end of said comment, Irwin wrote this: “When people no longer see you the way you see yourself it’s a clear sign that it’s time to go. Excited to create my legacy elsewhere and keep chasing perfection like a shadow.”

That was a pretty clear sign that Irwin wouldn’t be signing back with the Bengals’ practice squad.

While it isn’t necessarily a sign of players wanting to leave the Bengals or anything so dramatic, it does come at an interesting time for the team. Andrei Iosivas hasn’t emerged as the reliable No. 3 and rookie Jermaine Burton hasn’t lived up to his draft billing.

Perhaps the team is ready to get Charlie Jones back and more heavily involve him. But letting go of a wideout who has been with the team for five-plus  years while letting recent waiver claim Isaiah Williams act as the sixth wideout is an odd move at this point.

Bengals make roster moves after loss to Steelers

The Bengals are starting to make moves after the loss.

Those expecting the Cincinnati Bengals to make big roster moves or coaching changes after what was effectively a season-ending loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers will have to wait.

But the Bengals did make roster moves on the day after the loss.

There, the team waived wideout Trenton Irwin and signed linebacker Shaka Heyward off the practice squad to the active roster.

This one could signal an alarm bell around the Logan Wilson knee injury. That, or the team is about to bench somebody from the current linebacker unit after two surprising lineup changes against the Steelers.

Either way, this probably won’t be the only roster moves news of the week for the Bengals.

ESPN names surprising Bengals nonstarter to know for 2024

ESPN brings up a Bengals player flying under the radar.

The Cincinnati Bengals don’t have many players flying under the proverbial radar.

That’s what happens when a roster contends, gets national hype, and doesn’t have much in the way of turnover on an annual basis.

Still, when one thinks of underrated players to know, one thinks of the running back rotation, an efficient pass-rusher like Joseph Ossai, or even a rookie defender such as cornerback Josh Newton.

ESPN’s Aaron Schatz, though, went a different direction and found a name to focus on at wideout:

Nonstarter to know: Receiver Trenton Irwin. It’s hard to tell who’s going to be the third receiver behind Chase and Higgins, but Irwin actually scored higher than Higgins in ESPN’s receiver tracking metrics last season and had a receiving DVOA of 20.8%, which ranked 10th among receivers with 10-49 pass targets.

And it’s a good name, too. Irwin just played a career-high 429 snaps last year and was indeed efficient and reliable.

The wrinkle for Iwin within the base offense is how much he can actually see the field with Tyler Boyd gone. New tight end Mike Gesicki gets a lot of work from the slot as a third “receiver” and the running backs can work from there if necessary, too.

Then there’s breakout candidate and rookie Jermaine Burton, who might be impossible to hold off the field as the season continues.

But even if Irwin can’t get in the offense much, he’s been able to help in meaningful ways through special teams, too, and that certainly won’t change in 2024.

Bengals bring back WR Trenton Irwin in free agency

Trenton Irwin returns for the Bengals.

After re-signing tight end Tanner Hudson, the Cincinnati Bengals kept the retention theme going with wideout Trenton Irwin.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Irwin returns on a one-year deal worth $2 million.

Like Hudson, Irwin returns as key depth after carving out a nice niche for himself as a situational receiver and a returner on special teams.

Irwin, 28, joins sophomores Andre Iosivas and Charlie Jones as key depth behind the big names on the depth chart.

Bengals coaches figure to want more speed in the base offense from the slot when new arrival Mike Gesicki doesn’t line up there, so Irwin’s return doesn’t alter any possible free agency or draft plans when it comes to the position.

Watch: Joe Burrow hits Trenton Irwin for fifth-consecutive opening-drive TD

A big opening touchdown for the Bengals.

The fast starts continue for the Cincinnati Bengals.

This time, it’s Joe Burrow hitting Trenton Irwin with a touchdown strike to take an early lead over the Houston Texans in Week 10.

That connection makes it five games in a row that the Bengals have hit on opening-drive touchdowns, with Cincinnati going on to win the last four as Burrow looks all the way back from his calf injury.

More impressive? Tee Higgins was inactive on the day and Ja’Marr Chase, after entering the game as questionable, was simply a decoy in the slot for this touchdown connection to Irwin.

A look at the play and funny Burrow celebration:

Watch: Trenton Irwin posts one of the top highlights of Bengals training camp

A huge play from T.I. at Bengals camp.

Trenton Irwin is one of those handful of wideouts scrapping and fighting for a roster spot this summer with the Cincinnati Bengals.

And putting up one of the best highlights of training camp certainly helps.

Late in practice on Thursday, Irwin extended and made a wicked catch while draped by a defender, getting the highlight-reel treatment from multiple angles.

It’s one of the best highlights a player will put up all camp and a good example of what Irwin can do as a depth piece when he’s not helping out on special teams.

Irwin faces more pressure than usual this summer behind the big three thanks to veterans like Stanley Morgan and Trent Taylor, plus the team drafting rookies Charlie Jones (who was carted off on Thursday) and Andrei Iosivas. But if he keeps doing things like this, he might as well be a lock:
