49ers LT job changes in big way after trade, retirement

The 49ers trade for Trent Williams and Joe Staley announces his retirement.

Arizona Cardinals outside linebacker Chandler Jones has a new one-on-one opponent this coming season when the Cardinals take on the San Francisco 49ers twice this year. The 49ers had two big things happen at left tackle.

First, they made a deal with the Washington Redskins, trading for left tackle Trent Williams. They gave up a fifth-round pick in the 2020 draft and a third-round pick in 2021.

Williams has one year left on his contract and is 32 years old. He did not play in 2019 and has not played a full 16 games in a season since 2013. He was a Pro Bowler every year from 2012-2018.

Following the announcement of the trade to acquire Williams, longtime starting left tackle Joe Staley announced his retirement.

Injuries limited him to seven games in 2019 and he has a neck issue that continues to bother him.

He is nearly 36 years old. In 13 seasons with the 49ers, he was selected to six Pro Bowls.

The 49ers lose one of the greatest at his position but also acquire one who is his equal when healthy.

New 49er Trent Williams once smacked Richard Sherman in the face

Trent Williams and Richard Sherman are teammates now after they got into a scuffle after a playoff game.

Trent Williams and Richard Sherman are teammates after the 49ers acquired the left tackle in a deal for a pair of draft picks. Those two haven’t always gotten along.

After the Seahawks downed Washington 24-14 in the wild card round of the 2013 playoffs, Sherman and Williams got into a scuffle as the teams greeted each other for the typical post-game niceties.

The result of their heated verbal exchange was Williams throwing an open-handed blow to Sherman’s face.

It was customary for Sherman to get into it with opponents during the height of his powers. He was the best cornerback in the NFL on the best defense in the NFL, and he wasn’t afraid to let opponents –  or anyone else within earshot – know about it.

While the two didn’t have a very good interaction after that playoff game, they quickly made up, which is good news for tranquility in the 49ers’ locker room they’ll now share.

Sherman sent out a tweet after the game that Williams had reached out to him via text message:

In 2015, the two posed for a photo together at a Nike event. Williams posted the photo on Twitter along with the message, “No people we’re not beefing lol.”

Williams and Sherman will both play integral roles for the 49ers on and off the field next season as they aim to get back to the Super Bowl for a second consecutive season. The absence of beef between the two is good news for San Francisco.

Tackle Trent Williams’ agent denies that he objected to particular trades

Trent Williams’ agent, Vincent Taylor, said that Williams and him objecting to particular trades is false reporting.

Redskins tackle Trent Williams is headed to the 49ers in exchange for a fifth-round pick this year and a third-round pick next year, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported.

Williams ended up with the 49ers, and it came down to them and the Vikings in the Trent Williams trade, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport also reported that Williams didn’t want to do a deal with the Vikings. But Williams’ agent, Vincent Taylor, has come out and denied that his client and him objected to particular trades, saying that there has been false reporting on the subject.

“I wanted to respect all teams’ rights and the process and allowed the Redskins to negotiate directly with other teams,” Taylor said in a statement.

Taylor went on to say that he hoped negotiations would quickly lead to a trade that is beneficial for all parties involved. He later released a second statement in regards to Williams going to the 49ers.

“Trent Williams is ready to get back to competing in the NFL and is glad to be part of a great organization like the San Francisco 49ers,” Taylor said in a statement.

Trent Williams says he is ‘thankful this is over’ after being traded to 49ers

Trent Williams says he is thankful that the trade saga with Washington is over after being dealt to the 49ers.

I think we can all agree with former Washington Redskins LT Trent Williams here. We’re all happy this is over.

The Redskins traded Williams to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday right before Day 3 of the NFL Draft got underway, causing a bomb to go off on Redskins social media networks as the team prepared to make their fourth-round pick, where they selected LSU OT Saahdiq Charles, who will likely replace Trent.

Washington received a 5th-round pick in this years’ draft, as well as a 3rd-round pick in the 2021 draft.

It has been a whirlwind of news for the Redskins and Trent Williams over the past 48 hours, with trade speculation running rampant and reports being denied. In the end, Washington found a new home for Williams, and they got a little bit of draft capital in return, though it’s definitely not what they could have gotten if Trent was traded a year ago. Thank Bruce Allen for that one.

With this saga now in the rearview, we can all take a deep breath and focus on the draft. Trent Williams is gone, and we can all move on.

Twitter can’t believe how little Redskins got in return for Trent Williams

Twitter was stunned by Trent Williams going for two mid-round picks.

The Washington Redskins finally found a trade partner for Trent Williams, shipping him to the San Francisco 49ers during the draft on Saturday. It wasn’t the blockbuster trade everyone thought it’d be, though.

Washington got a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft and a third-rounder in 2021 for Williams, who’s a seven-time Pro Bowler.

Twitter couldn’t believe how low the return was for the Redskins, with most people reacting in utter disbelief.

Trent Williams being traded to 49ers is ironic in so many ways

Williams will reportedly play on his current contract in 2020, meaning his holdout in 2019 was all for nothing.

Trent Williams is gone, and the Washington Redskins are officially starting fresh going into the 2020 season.

It was a whirlwind of breaking news for the Redskins as Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Draft got underway, with reports coming out that the Redskins traded veteran LT Trent Williams at long last, sending him to the San Francisco 49ers for a 5th round pick in 2020, as well as a 3rd round pick in 2021. It may not have been what Washington initially wanted as far as compensation goes, but it was the best they could get at this point.

An interesting note on the trade is that Williams doesn’t have a contract extension in place with the 49ers as of yet, and he is currently slotted to play the 2020 season on his current deal. This means that all of that holding out he did in 2019? Yea, that was all for nothing.

Another interesting note is the landing spot, under former Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan in San Fran. The Redskins’ willingness to send Williams to the 49ers shows how much of a grown-up Ron Rivera is, not letting past grudges get the best of him. Bruce Allen could never.

In all of this craziness, it’s important to take a step back and remember two things. Bruce Allen is gone, and Trent Williams is gone. A fresh start is upon us. Take a deep breath and trust in Ron Rivera.

Updated 49ers picks after trade for Trent Williams

The Trent Williams trade was the third move the 49ers have made in the 2020 NFL draft, and leaves them with two Day 3 picks.

[jwplayer tifQDjSh-ThvAeFxT]

The 49ers made a huge splash Saturday when reports surfaced that they acquired left tackle Trent Williams in a trade with Washington. In exchange for the seven-time Pro Bowler, San Francisco sent Washington a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft, and a third-round selection in 2021.

This is the third trade the 49ers have made throughout the three-day draft. They also moved three picks across two trades to acquire Dee Ford last offseason and Emmanuel Sanders in the middle of last season.

Here’s an updated list of their Day 3 picks:

Round 6, Pick 210
Round 7, Pick 217 (via Detroit)

The 49ers since last offseason have traded their picks in Rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 in this year’s draft. They also moved the fourth-round selection they picked up when they slid back a spot in the first round to move back up from No. 31 to No. 25, and the Williams trade involved the fifth-round pick they recouped from the Broncos in the Sanders deal.

Barring a trade down from either of those spots, the 49ers will have a maximum of four players selected in the 2020 draft. They’re making a significant gamble that Williams will be back to Pro Bowl form after missing all of last season, and that first-round picks Javon Kinlaw and Brandon Aiyuk will step in and be contributors right away.

Oklahoma’s Trent Williams traded from Redskins to 49ers

Former Oklahoma tackle Trent Williams was traded from the Redskins to the 49ers.

Former Oklahoma tackle Trent Williams was traded from the Redskins to the 49ers in exchanged for a 2020 fifth round pick and a 2021 third round pick on Saturday.

Williams has played for the Redskins all nine years of his professional career, making the Pro Bowl in all but his freshman and sophomore season with the team.

Despite reports that Williams denied a trade request to the Vikings, Vincent Taylor, Williams’s agent, argued that in a statement Saturday morning.

“No, that’s not true,” Williams told ESPN’s John Keim and Courtney Cronin.

“There has been false reporting that Trent and I objected to particular trades,” Williams’s agent Vincent Taylor said in a statement Saturday morning. “I will continue to respect the Redskins right to negotiate a trade and hope that the negotiations quickly lead to a trade that is in the Redskins best interest, Trent’s best interest and the interest of the other team.” ESPN first reported the story.

Now 31-years-old, Williams is joining a 49ers team that made a Super Bowl appearance last season under Jimmy Garoppolo’s quarterback play.

Redskins trade OT Trent Williams to the 49ers for two mid-round picks

The Redskins have traded seven-time Pro Bowl tackle Trent Williams to the San Francisco 49ers.

The long national nightmare between offensive tackle Trent Williams, one of the best at his position in the NFL over the last decade, and the Washington Redskins, is over. As ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported, Washington has traded the disgruntled tackle to the 49ers for a fifth-round pick in 2020 and a third-round pick in 2021.

Williams and the Redskins have a negative recent history. In 2019, it was reported that Williams had a growth or tumor removed from his head that doctors worried at the time might be malignant. Williams was reportedly unhappy with the ways in which the team’s medical staff handled the potential seriousness of the growth or tumor, and that led to Williams sitting out for the 2019 season.

Other teams had been involved in trade talks with the Redskins — the Buccaneers, Browns, and Vikings had spoken with Washington about the seven-time Pro Bowler — but in the end, it was the 49ers — whose head coach, Kyle Shanahan, was the Redskins’ offensive coordinator in 2010 when the team selected Williams with the fourth overall pick out of Oklahoma — who were able to make the trade happen.

Shanahan has one of the most multiple and diverse offenses in the league, and there were rumors that left tackle Joe Staley might retire after San Francisco’s Super Bowl LIV loss to the Chiefs. 49ers general manager John Lynch said in February that he thought Staley might return. But according to Schefter, Staley will retire due to health concerns, which obviously makes the Williams trade of paramount importance.

If healthy, Williams provides a serious upgrade to San Francisco’s offensive line, though due to injuries, he hasn’t played a full 16-game season since 2013. Williams carries a $14.5 million cap hit for the 2020 season in the last year of the five year, $66 million contract extension he signed in 2015. So, the 49ers may be talking with Williams about a longer-term deal in the near future.

Soon after the trade news broke, the Redskins selected LSU tackle Saahdiq Charles with the 108th overall pick — the second selection in the fourth round. Charles has first- or second-round talent, though he’s had disciplinary issues in college, but he’s an estimable talent.

Report: Trent Williams said he didn’t want to do a deal with the Vikings

The Vikings felt like they were in a position to make a similar deal for Trent Williams that San Francisco did, but the tackle said he didn’t want to do it, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Redskins reportedly agreed to a deal with the 49ers, sending over Pro Bowl tackle Trent Williams for a fifth-round pick this year and a third-round pick next year, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported.

But what happened to the Vikings in the trade sweepstakes for Williams?

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, it came down to Minnesota and San Francisco. The Vikings felt like they were in a position to make a similar deal with Washington to the one that was worked out with San Francisco, per Rapoport.

Rapoport reported that Williams didn’t want to do a deal with the Vikings. Also according to Rapoport, if Minnesota had done the deal, Williams would have received an extension.

Williams would have been a big boost to the Vikings offensive line. However, the team drafted Boise State tackle Ezra Cleveland, who has a chance to come in and start right away. Cleveland will probably be a lot cheaper contract than Williams.
