49ers 1st Week 12 practice report littered with injured stars

The 49ers practice report to open Week 12 is rough:

The San Francisco 49ers can’t seem to escape the injury bug in the 2024 season.

Their first practice participation report of Week 12 featured nine players either out or limited due to injury. Of those nine, five are starters who were either All-Pros or Pro Bowlers just last season.

Most teams by this point of the season have multiple players banged up and dealing with injuries, but for the 49ers it seems as though all of their most important players have dealt with injuries of varying degrees of severity at some point during the year.

With another huge game coming up and their playoff hopes potentially on the line, the 49ers need to hope their injury luck turns around quickly in the lead up to Sunday’s showdown with the Green Bay Packers.

Here’s Wednesday’s participation report:

Did not participate

LB Tatum Bethune (knee)
DE Nick Bosa (hip, oblique)
DT Kevin Givens (groin)
RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles, rest)
LT Trent Williams (ankle)

Bethune sprained his MCL in Week 11 and figures to miss multiple weeks. Bosa played through his hip injury two weeks ago and now appears to have caused additional damage that puts his chances to play against the Packers in jeopardy. Givens was seen getting work in on a side field late last week, which gives some optimism of an eventual return. A non-participation for him isn’t a great sign for his chances to play this week. McCaffrey will likely be out or limited of every practice as part of the team’s management of his Achilles injury, while Williams is nursing an ankle issue he played through last week.

Limited participation

WR Jacob Cowing (concussion)
C Jon Feliciano (knee)
TE George Kittle (hamstring)
QB Brock Purdy (right shoulder)
CB Charvarius Ward (not injury related – personal matter)

Cowing sustained a concussion on a punt return last week. He’ll need to clear concussion protocol to suit up in Green Bay. Feliciano may be an answer for the 49ers on the offensive line, but he’s yet to be activated off IR. Kittle told reporters he’s confident he’ll play in Week 12, but they may still limit him during the week as a precaution. Purdy sustained a shoulder injury in Week 11 that will require some management during the week by San Francisco. That he was limited is a good sign. Ward was also back on the practice field after time away from the team to work through a personal tragedy.

49ers injury update: George Kittle inactive vs. Seahawks

No George Kittle for the 49ers today.

The San Francisco 49ers have officially ruled out tight end George Kittle for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Kittle suffered a hamstring injury in Week 10 that head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t seem concerned about when he spoke with media Monday. Shanahan said Kittle would miss Wednesday’s practice as part of the management of that injury. Kittle returned to action Thursday and Friday, but isn’t able to play Sunday.

His absence will be welcome news for the Seahawks after he got them for a pair of touchdowns in the 49ers’ win over Seattle back in Week 6.

Here are the 49ers Week 11 inactives:

QB Josh Dobbs (QB3)
CB Charvarius Ward (Personal)
TE George Kittle (hamstring)
DL Kevin Givens (groin)
OL Ben Bartch
DL Khalil Davis
WR Ronnie Bell

Not among the inactives are defensive end Nick Bosa and left tackle Trent Williams. Bosa is working through a hip injury, while Williams missed the entire week of practice because of an ankle issue.

Bosa told reporters his hip injury bothered him a lot in the team’s Week 10 victory in Tampa Bay. He had a light week of practice that allowed him to be ready for Sunday. Don’t be surprised if he winds up on a shorter rotation than normal while he manages his injury.

49ers vs. Seahawks injury report: Latest updates, news for Week 11

All the latest updates and news on 49ers’ injury report ahead of a Week 11 game vs. Seahawks.

The San Francisco 49ers need a win in Week 11 over the Seattle Seahawks. Their injury situation may make it a significant uphill climb to a victory.

With the Arizona Cardinals on a Bye, the 49ers could finish Week 11 in a tie for first place in the NFC. They’ll be in second because of head-to-head tiebreakers, but they’ll also be just a half game out of the No. 7 seed in the NFC. San Francisco needs to start stacking some wins against NFC and NFC West opponents to give themselves a little breathing room in their hunt for a postseason berth.

Seattle, on the other hand, is trying to climb out of the NFC West basement after their Bye. A loss puts them further behind the curve to compete in the NFC West. A win puts them in position to fight for the division crown.

There’s a ton at stake in Sunday’s game, and the 49ers may be missing some key players. Here’s what their Week 11 injury report looks like:

49ers injury report

Out
CB Charvarius Ward (personal)
DT Kevin Givens (groin)
P Mitch Wishnowsky (back)

Doubtful
CB Darrell Luter Jr. (pelvis)

Questionable
TE George Kittle (hamstring)
DE Nick Bosa (hip)
LT Trent Williams (ankle)
DL Yetur Gross-Matos (knee)
C Jon Feliciano (knee)
LG Aaron Banks (thigh)

CB Charvarius Ward injury update

Ward remains out to deal with a personal matter. Head coach Kyle Shanahan intimated Ward could be nearing a return, but the team won’t put a date on when he comes back due to the nature of his absence.

DT Kevin Givens injury update

Givens was seen working on a side field Friday according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. That’s a good sign for the 49ers’ DT who has become an integral part of their defensive line rotation.

P Mitch Wishnowsky injury update

A back injury cropped up for Wishnowsky during training camp and flared up in Week 10. He may be out significant time to get his back right. The 49ers signed P Pat O’Donnell to their practice squad as a potential replacement if Wishnowsky is out long-term. Shanahan told reporters the team plans on placing Wishnowsky on IR.

CB Darrell Luter Jr. injury update

Luter showed up on Friday’s participation report with a pelvis injury. It’s unclear when he sustained the injury, but he didn’t participate Friday.

TE George Kittle injury update

A hamstring injury cropped up for Kittle after Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Shanahan indicated early in the week he was optimistic Kittle would be available Sunday. He missed Wednesday’s practice, but returned for Thursday and Friday’s sessions.

DE Nick Bosa injury update

Bosa played through a hip injury in Week 10, and told reporters after Wednesday’s practice he would rest during the week to try and get ready for Sunday. He wound up returning Friday for a limited practice. Shanahan seemed optimistic about Bosa’s chances, but he’ll be a game time decision.

LT Trent Williams injury update

An ankle injury accompanied Williams’s usual veteran rest day Wednesday. He was out of Thursday’s practice as well, putting a significant question mark over his status for Sunday.

DL Yetur Gross-Matos injury update

The 49ers haven’t activated Gross-Matos off IR after opening his practice window before Week 10. Here’s in line to turn this week and provide a significant boost to the 49ers’ defensive line.

C Jon Feliciano injury update

Feliciano is in the same boat as Gross-Matos as someone with their practice window opened. It sounds like the 49ers may be awaiting a chance to open a roster spot before bringing him back.

LG Aaron Banks injury update

This is a new one. Banks didn’t appear on either Wednesday or Thursday practice reports, and then landed as questionable with a thigh issue after a limited practice Friday. His status may determine whether Feliciano is activated.

New 49ers Week 11 practice report features more bad news than good

Woof … Thursday’s practice report isn’t great.

The San Francisco 49ers are teetering on the brink of potential disaster on the injury front as they prepare for their Week 11 showdown against the Seattle Seahawks.

Thursday’s practice participation report was even more crowded than Wednesday’s, and it featured more bad news than good.

The good news is that tight end George Kittle returned to action after missing Wednesday’s session. He was limited Thursday, as anticipated by head coach Kyle Shanahan who told reporters he wasn’t too worried about Kittle’s status for Sunday.

In some less-than-good news, left tackle Trent Williams was absent again with an ankle issue. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings also showed up as a limited participant with an ankle injury.

Williams was classified as a non-participant for rest Wednesday, but he also had an ankle injury listed. That ankle kept him out of another practice Thursday, putting his status for Sunday in doubt. If he can’t go, Jaylon Moore would be next in line to step in at left tackle. This will be worth monitoring closely.

Jennings wasn’t on the Wednesday report which makes his appearance Thursday even more concerning. It’s unclear the severity of the issue and when he sustained the injury. Shanahan will speak with reporters Friday and give a better idea of what the 49ers’ leading wide receiver is dealing with.

Defensive end Nick Bosa remained out of practice with a hip injury. He intimated to reporters Wednesday that he’d likely miss the entire week in hopes of getting ready to play Sunday. He’s also a question mark for Sunday in a key matchup with the Seahawks.

Here’s the full Thursday participation report:

49ers star receives hefty fine for penalty vs. Chiefs

Trent Williams’ punch got him ejected and fined a hefty amount.

The final nail in the San Francisco 49ers’ Week 7 coffin was the ejection of left tackle Trent Williams.

Williams was penalized 15 yards and ejected near the end of the 49ers’ 28-18 loss to the Chiefs for punching Kansas City defensive back Bryan Cook. The NFL has fined Williams $11,817 for his action, per NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Cook actually swung and hit Williams first while Williams was getting up after a play, but the officials only saw Williams’ reactionary punch. The NFL also fined Cook $8,442.64.

It was a clear sign of the frustration San Francisco was feeling in their fifth loss to Kansas City since the 2018 season. The Chiefs mostly dominated the game and held San Francisco to a season-worst 310 yards of total offense. It was also a sign that the 49ers weren’t dictating the game’s physicality and getting under an opponent’s skin the way we’ve seen them do in the past.

Williams also played his worst game of the year. Pro Football Focus gave him a below-average 55.4 overall grade. He didn’t allow a pressure, but he was hit with a pair of penalties, including the personal foul that got him ejected.

The punch from Williams was understandable given the circumstances, but ideally the team’s veteran leader won’t succumb to that kind of bait from an opponent in the future.

Mixed injury news for 49ers on updated Week 4 practice report

Deebo Samuel’s return headlined a ton of injury news for the 49ers from Thursday’s practice.

The San Francisco 49ers’ practice report from Thursday came with a mixed bag of injury news.

On the good side, wide receiver Deebo Samuel was back in action while recovering from a calf strain he suffered in Week 3. Linebacker Dee Winters was back as well after sitting out Wednesday’s session because of an ankle issue. Left tackle Trent Williams also participated after missing Wednesday with an illness.

On the bad side, two players were carted off during Thursday’s session according to the Bay Area News Group’s Cam Inman. in Santa Clara. Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott and linebacker Curtis Robinson both exited the session. Elliott was listed as limited with an ankle injury, while Robinson was limited with a knee injury. The extent of their ailments is unknown.

Here’s the full practice report from Thursday:

Did not participate

WR Jacob Cowing (illness)
DT Javon Hargrave (triceps)

It wouldn’t be ideal if there was an illness running through the 49ers’ locker room. Cowing is also not going to rise up the wide receiver depth chart any faster by missing a practice.

Limited participation

DT Jordan Elliott (foot)
TE George Kittle (hamstring)
LB Curtis Robinson (knee)
WR Deebo Samuel (calf)
LB Dee Winters (ankle)

Head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak with reporters Friday and should have more details on the extent of Elliott and Robinson’s injuries. Samuel and Winters returning after their absences Wednesday could give them a chance to play Sunday. George Kittle also participated for a second day in a row. Friday’s injury report will tell us their official statuses.

Full participation

QB Brock Purdy (back)
LT Trent Williams (illness)

No setbacks for Purdy and Williams’s illness didn’t knock him out for more than one practice. Good signs here.

49ers 1st Week 4 practice report highlights depth of injury woes

The 49ers practice participation report for Wednesday isn’t super fun.

The San Francisco 49ers’ injury situation isn’t getting better as the club prepares to face the New England Patriots in Week 4.

Their practice participation report featured a host of big-time names on top of the key players who are already slated to miss the contest.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel was among the non-participants. He’s on track to miss a second consecutive game because of a calf injury. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave was also a non-participant after suffering a partial triceps tear against the Rams. He’s expected to go on season-ending IR soon.

The good news is quarterback Brock Purdy was a full go after dealing with back soreness following Week 3. Cornerback Charvarius Ward, who was questionable against the Los Angeles Rams with knee and hamstring injuries, wasn’t present on the report.

Here’s what Wednesday’s practice participation looked like:

Did not participate

DT Javon Hargrave (triceps)
WR Deebo Samuel (calf)
LT Trent Williams (illness)
LB Dee Winters (ankle)

Any time Williams is out it’s worth taking note of. Ideally his illness won’t hold him out of Sunday’s game. The other news here is that Winters is out. He returned in Week 3 from a preseason ankle injury, then quickly re-aggravated that ankle on the Rams’ fake punt. Winters could have a key role in the 49ers’ defense once he’s healthy.

Limited participation

TE George Kittle (hamstring)

A limited session is better than nothing for the All-Pro tight end. He was initially doubtful for Week 3 before getting ruled out Saturday. That the team didn’t immediately rule him out on Friday’s injury report is a good sign for his availability this week, but his status the rest of the week will give us a clearer picture.

Full participation

QB Brock Purdy (back)

It didn’t sound like this would be a huge issue when Shanahan announced it during Monday’s conference call. However, back injuries can be tricky so getting confirmation that Purdy was a full go is a good sign.

49ers injury news: Trent Williams exits vs. Rams

The 49ers star left tackle exited the game in the second quarter against the Rams.

With injuries piling up, including multiple All-Pros like Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle sidelined, the injury bug struck again on Sunday in Los Angeles.

During the second quarter of their Week 3 contest against the Los Angeles Rams, San Fransisco 49ers star left tackle Trent Williams exited the game. Williams appeared to get up slow with late in the second quarter. With only a minute left in the first half, Williams exited the game and into the locker room early at SoFi Stadium.

According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, Williams left the game with cramps. Williams had to exit the game in Week 1 against the New York Jets to receive an IV. With Williams out, Jaylon Moore will slide in at offensive tackle.

49ers roster moves include addition of All-Pro OT ahead of season opener

The 49ers added OT Trent Williams to their roster and elevated a pair of defenders from the practice squad.

The San Francisco 49ers announced a handful of roster moves before their season opener against the New York Jets.

All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams was officially added to the 49ers’ roster after spending the entire preseason on the reserve/did not report list. Veteran offensive tackle Brandon Parker was released to clear a roster spot for Williams.

Parker’s time with the 49ers was a whirlwind since his signing leading up to Week 1 indicated that Williams’s contract negotiations may bleed into the regular season. Now that Williams is back, Parker’s services are no longer required and he was let go. Jaylon Moore will serve as the team’s backup OT.

San Francisco also elevated two players from the practice squad.

Defensive end Sam Okuayinonu is up for Week 1 to help out with DE depth while Yetur Gross-Matos nurses a knee sprain. Okuayinonu spent the preseason with San Francisco and made the initial 53-man roster before getting waived. He re-signed with the 49ers practice squad after clearing waivers.

Veteran safety Tracy Walker was a late add to the 49ers’ preseason roster, and he’ll be up for the season opener. He’ll provide safety depth with Talanoa Hufanga officially listed as doubtful while he finishes up his rehab from an ACL tear he suffered last year. Walker will likely contribute on special teams while Ji’Ayir Brown and veteran George Odom hold down the starting safety roles.

The 49ers and Jets are slated to kick off at 5:15pm Pacific Time at Levi’s Stadium.

Legendary NFL coach likes 49ers offense and ‘great’ coach Kyle Shanahan

Bill Belichick is a big fan of the 49ers’ offense and head coach Kyle Shanahan.

There aren’t many stamps of approval more valuable for an NFL team than one given by legendary coach Bill Belichick.

The San Francisco 49ers received that very stamp ahead of their Monday night showdown against the New York Jets.

Belichick didn’t accept a job offer from 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, but he did appear on the ‘Pat McAfee Show’ and expanded on the difficulties of facing Aaron Rodgers before heaping praise on the 49ers and their head coach.

“The 49ers have really good skill players,” Belichick said. “You can’t let (Christian) McCaffrey get going if you’re the Jets. That guy’s a game wrecker. (Brandon) Aiyuk on third-down situations. (George) Kittle is one of, if not the best, tight end end in the league. He’s a tremendous player. Those guys are all really hard to tackle. They’ll all block. They’re a tough matchup. They’re a really tough matchup. With Trent (Williams) back there they’re solid at left tackle, so the blind side is good. And Kyle’s a great offensive coach. He’s a scheme coach. So, I’m sure he’ll challenge the Jets with some good looking plays and some tough schemes.”

Belichick isn’t familiar with facing the current iteration of the 49ers since he last faced them with the New England Patriots in 2020. San Francisco dominated that game in New England and won 33-6.

This version of the 49ers is even tougher with McCaffrey in the backfield and Brock Purdy under center. Belichick also didn’t mention wide receiver Deebo Samuel who is perhaps the most unique offensive weapon in the league.

Getting that co-sign from Belichick is just another signal that San Francisco’s offense has the potential to be the NFL’s best in 2024. Week 1 will give us a good picture of what’s to come against Jets head coach Robert Saleh and their very good defensive unit.
