Mick Cronin sends message to Trent Perry on NBA hopes

Trent Perry can certainly develop at UCLA.

The UCLA Bruins men’s basketball program got a massive commitment from Trent Perry after he decommitted from USC.

Perry’s arrival in Westwood is expected to be a big one, although it remains to be seen what his role will look like in his freshman campaign.

Nonetheless, Mick Cronin revealed the message he delivered to Perry to land him in Westwood, and he used NBA players that went to UCLA as an example, per Ben Bolch of The Los Angeles Times.

Cronin’s message to Perry was that he was a winner who could help the Bruins raise their first national title banner in 30 years and enhance his NBA stock even if he didn’t start immediately, just like former first-round picks Russell Westbrook, Zach LaVine and Peyton Watson before him.

“It’s just a fallacy that you have to come in and play 35 minutes with the ball in your hands to make it in the NBA; it’s just not true,” Cronin said. “I mean, all you’ve got to do is look at Reed Sheppard, who didn’t start at Kentucky [except five games] this year and he’s going to go third or fourth according to every mock draft.”

That is a valid point from Cronin, and perhaps Perry made the right choice.

UCLA basketball make jump in 247 Sports recruiting rankings

UCLA just keeps moving up.

With the latest addition of Trent Perry, the UCLA men’s basketball team jumped up in the latest recruiting rankings. Mike Regalado tweeted out that 247Sports listed the Bruins 36th in the latest rankings:

The Bruins now have two commits with the addition of Perry. Eric Freeny from Corona California signed, and will fill the shooting guard need Perrt was ranked 33rd in the country, and fourth best at the point guard position. Freeny is 66th overall and was listed as the 13th-best shooting guard.

The Bruins also have done well with the transfer portal, with the 9th best ranking, as they have six fresh faces coming in and eligible:

Dominick Harris from Loyola Marymount, William Kyle III of South Dakota State, Tyler Bilodeau of Oregon State, Eric Dailey from Oklahoma State, Kobe Johnson from USC and Skyy Clark out of Louisville are all immediately eligible to join Mick Cronin’s 2024-2025 squad.

Cronin seems to be pleased with his addition and had great things to say about the addition of Perry, and the roster is loaded for next season.

Jrue Holiday welcomes Trent Perry to UCLA

Classy move by Jrue.

There are a handful of former UCLA Bruins basketball players in the NBA playoffs still. One of them is Boston Celtics guard Jrue Holiday, who has been a big part of the roster after coming over in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Bruins made more headlines recently by striking a commitment from McDonald’s All-American and former USC commit Trent Perry in what has been a massive offseason for Mick Cronin’s program.

Well, Holiday took to X and made sure to congratulate Perry for his decision, quoting UCLA’s signing notice with a welcome message: “Welcome to the @UCLAMBB family!! @trent_perry0″

Perry is a massive addition to the roster and makes the 2024-2025 group even more talented. Add in the six transfer portal players Cronin has landed this offseason, and there are a lot of reasons why UCLA is in the way-too-early top-25 rankings.

It’s a huge success so far for UCLA as they make the move to the Big Ten Conference.

USC fans hope Trent Perry and Kobe Johnson do not thrive at UCLA

It will be a nightmare if Trent Perry and Kobe Johnson both have breakout seasons under Mick Cronin.

USC basketball has a new sheriff in town. Eric Musselman has remade a roster which is not yet 100-percent finished. That roster could turn out to be very good, and if it does, Trojan fans will be happy. However, while seeing USC improve is priority number one, there is a concern among Trojan fans that UCLA might soar with its own remade roster. Trent Perry, a former USC commit, joined Mick Cronin and the Bruins on Wednesday. We now have a situation in which a former USC commit and a former USC player will be Bruins next season. Kobe Johnson transferred from USC to UCLA. He and Perry will be hard to ignore on the Los Angeles college basketball scene.

UCLA Wire wrote about Perry after his commitment:

“The UCLA Bruins basketball program landed a massive commitment from McDonald’s All-American Trent Perry on Wednesday.

“Previously, Perry had received a crystal ball projection to go to Virginia before it changed and became favored for UCLA. On Wednesday, it was made official as the former USC commit now will head to Westwood.

“It is another huge recruiting win for Mick Cronin in what has been a terrific offseason after a disappointing 2023-2024 campaign.”

If Trent Perry and Kobe Johnson flourish at UCLA, it will be a throbbing headache for USC fans. The Trojan family simply has to hope that Eric Musselman will be so good that UCLA’s success becomes less of a storyline in L.A. college hoops.

UCLA basketball commit Trent Perry through the lens

The UCLA Bruins basketball program landed Trent Perry in a huge commitment. Here are some photos from his high school days.

The UCLA Bruins men’s basketball program landed a massive commitment on Wednesday. McDonald’s All-American Trent Perry decided to come to Westwood after backing out of his USC commitment following Andy Enfield’s departure to SMU.

He was given a crystal ball to UCLA and it became a reality, which is another big boost for Mick Cronin’s team. On the flip side, Virginia fans weren’t happy once things appeared to change.

The Harvard-Westlake point guard is a four-star recruit and adds even more talent to an already-loaded UCLA 2024-2025 roster. Here are some photos from Perry during his high school days and his McDonald’s All-American game performance.

Mick Cronin reacts to Trent Perry commitment

Mick Cronin is thrilled to bring on Trent Perry.

The UCLA Bruins basketball program and its fanbase started to get excited after a crystal ball projection hinted at Trent Perry coming to Westwood.

On Wednesday, it was made official and Perry put pen to paper to become a Bruin. He originally was slated to go to USC before decommitting following Andy Enfield’s departure to SMU.

He had plenty of interest and at one point was expected to go to Virginia. Nonetheless, he is joining a loaded UCLA roster, and Mick Cronin spoke about adding Perry to the team, per the official release:

“We are thrilled that Trent Perry has chosen to become a Bruin,” Cronin said. “He has had a very successful high school career at Harvard-Westlake, where he was extremely well-coached by Dave Rebibo. Time after time, he stepped up in big moments and led his team to victory. He’ll graduate as a back-to-back California state champion and the Gatorade California Basketball Player of the Year, along with a host of other impressive individual accolades. Trent has established himself as a dynamic playmaker, and we believe that he has a very high ceiling as his game continues to develop. We’re looking forward to having him in Westwood.”

Perry is a local product from Harrvard-Westlake and a McDonald’s All-American, so there is a lot to like about this addition.

Bruins target and All-American Trent Perry to announce decision

Trent Perry’s decision is coming tonight.

The UCLA Bruins are on the cusp of potentially landing a huge commitment. Trent Perry, a four-start McDonald’s All-American point guard from Studio City, California, is tapped to make his commitment tonight.

According to the 247 Sports Crystal Ball, the Bruins are the favorite to land the talented guard in what could prove to be a program-altering move. Given the Bruins’ recent struggles, they opted for the transfer portal to add talent, including Skyy Clark from Louisville, Kobe Johnson from USC, and Eric Dailey Jr. from Oklahoma State.

Despite the Bruins 16-17 record in 2023-2024, there is hope that the new addition of Perry and Co. could be the start of something new in Westwood.

With Perry making his decision at 6:00 p.m., UCLA could infuse a lot of young talent into their lineup and see improvements to the team as soon as the first game’s tip-off at the start of next season.

Stay tuned.

Alabama Basketball reaches out to former USC commit, 2024 4-star PG Trent Perry

The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball program has reportedly reached out to 2024 point guard Trent Perry, who recently de-committed from USC.

The Alabama Crimson Tide basketball team is currently in the thick of March Madness, preparing for the Final Four, however, it has not stopped the coaching staff from expressing interest in prospects on the recruiting trail.

Recently, several schools reached out to 2024 four-star point guard Trent Perry following his decision to de-commit from the USC Trojans. One of the programs that reportedly made contact was head coach Nate Oats the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Perry had been committed to the Trojans since October of 2023. The product of Harvard Westlake High School in Studio City, California de-committed from USC on April 2. Since then, he has re-opened his recruitment and is exploring his options.

He is listed at 6-foot-4 and 175 pounds. Typically, Alabama head coach Nate Oats will utilize players with that stature at multiple positions. With the Crimson Tide likely losing multiple guards in the upcoming offseason, it would make sense to bring in a player of Perry’s caliber.

His recruitment will be one that Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor for the foreseeable future.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama men’s basketball program and its involvement on the recruiting trail.

UCLA reaches out to USC de-commit Trent Perry

UCLA in touch with Trent Perry following USC de-commitment.

The UCLA Bruins men’s basketball program has been active in gauging the interest of players in the transfer portal.

That continued on Tuesday as talented USC Trojans recruit Trent Perry decided to de-commit from the program with Andy Enfield leaving to take the SMU head coaching job.

Not even a day later, Perry revealed a number of schools had been in touch with him, including the UCLA Bruins (h/t Paul Biancardi of ESPN).

“I chose to de-commit from USC due to Andy Enfield leaving. I believe that was the best decision for me so that I can weigh all my options and decide what is best. Some schools that have already reached out are Alabama, Gonzaga, Virginia, UCLA, Nebraska, Stanford and others. Of course I’m eager to see who the next coach at USC will be.”

If UCLA can find a way to steal Perry away from the Trojans, it would be a massive boost and a monumental addition to Mick Cronin’s team. Perry was named a McDonald’s All-American, and stealing away a Trojn to come to Westwood would be amazing for the program,.

Four-star guard, top-30 recruit Trent Perry decommits from USC basketball after Andy Enfield leaves

Trent Perry was unwilling to wait out USC’s coaching search. That stings.

The effects of Andy Enfield’s move from USC to SMU are beginning to emerge. USC fans will tell you the Trojans needed Enfield to leave so that the program could start fresh and find an upgrade at the head coaching position. This is true. This is necessary. However, in the short run, USC could lose recruits Enfield brought into the program. This is why the Trojans have to move quickly to replace Enfield and get a coach in place. Obviously, the Trojans can’t settle for mediocrity. They have to get the hire done right. Yet, they also are fighting the clock, and costs could mount with each passing day. Trent Perry proves the point.

Perry, a top-30 recruit and a four-star guard, just decommitted from USC on Tuesday morning, one day after Enfield’s move to SMU became official. Enfield struggled to develop Isaiah Collier, so it’s not as though USC needed Enfield to stay. However, Perry’s decommitment before the announcement of a new coach still stings. There had been a hope that Perry could wait out the coaching search for at least a few days. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Be sure to read our USC coaching search primer.
