The novel coronavirus has already taken someone close to Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White.
After he admitted he was considering opting out of the 2020 season due to concerns about playing in the NFL during the pandemic, the Pro Bowl cornerback emphasized the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak, and explained how the disease has impacted his life. White, who still has not yet made the final decision about opting out with the deadline looming on Thursday at 4 p.m., explained on Twitter why he was considering skipping this season.
“Crazy that me choosing my family’s wellbeing over a game comes with so called fans attacking and questioning me and saying I’m selfish,” he wrote on Thursday morning. “No you guys are selfish for thinking that football is bigger than life. Oh by the way my girl’s grandfather passed from COVID. U understand now?”

White is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and is probably the most valuable defensive player on the Bills defense. It’s easy to see why fans and teammates may be sad to hear he might not play. But as White noted, that’s hardly what’s important right now. He has to make a decision that’s best for his family and himself. Surely, it’s a complicated one.
When he makes the final call, fans and teammates should respect and support that decision.
