OKC Thunder news: Darius Bazley, Tre Mann out of health and safety protocols

The Thunder welcome back Darius Bazley and Tre Mann from health and safety protocols, leaving Jeremiah Robinson-Earl as the only player left yet to return.

In a post-practice media availability on Tuesday, Oklahoma City Thunder interim head coach Mike Wilks announced that Darius Bazley and Tre Mann have exited health and safety protocols and were back in practice. The only player left in health and safety protocols is Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault has also been in it for a week now.

Bazley and Mann both had extended stays in health and safety protocols. Both of them entered on Dec. 26 and spent nine days in it.

Wilks also said that Lu Dort, who has been dealing with a sore knee, was limited in practice again and will meet with the medical staff to see how he feels. Dort missed Sunday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks due to knee soreness.

The Thunder’s next game is against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, Jan. 5.

OKC Thunder news: Thunder sign Rob Edwards, Scotty Hopson and Olivier Sarr to 10-day hardship deals

The Thunder have announced three 10-day hardship deal signings with Rob Edwards, Scotty Hopson and Olivier Sarr.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Monday that they have signed Rob Edwards, Scotty Hopson and Olivier Sarr to 10-day hardship deals.

The Thunder currently have four players in health and safety protocols — Darius Bazley, Tre Mann, Aleksej Pokusevski and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl — which means that the team had three temporary roster spots to fill as all four will be out until Sunday at the earliest.

Bazley and Mann entered protocols on Sunday while Pokusevski and Robinson-Earl entered on Monday. The Thunder played a game on Sunday against the New Orleans Pelicans with Mann, Pokusevski and Robinson-Earl all in the building with the latter two actually playing the game.

Edwards averaged 12.3 points while making a team-high 2.3 threes in 15 games this season. Hopson has averaged 6.4 points in 11 games this season, Sarr has averaged 7.1 points and 4.8 rebounds in 14 games this season.

The Blue has now had four players plucked from NBA teams with the hardship deal as D.J. Wilson was signed by the Toronto Raptors last week.

This news isn’t surprising. The Blue run the same offensive and use the same jargon as its superior along with playing in the same arena for home games, so a G League to NBA jump would be as seamless as possible. Logistically speaking, signing internal guys onto the hardship deals made a ton more sense than signing outside free agents.

The Thunder are scheduled to play at least three games with Edwards, Hopson and Sarr with the first game coming on Tuesday against the Sacramento Kings.

OKC Thunder news: Aleksej Pokusevski, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Aaron Wiggins enter health and safety protocols

The Thunder have finally been hit hard by COVID-19 as five players enter health and safety protocols in the same 24 hour span

A day after the Oklahoma City Thunder had its first two cases of a player missing time due to entering health and safety protocols in Darius Bazley and Tre Mann, the team announced that three additional players have entered protocols in Aleksej Pokusevski, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Aaron Wiggins.

With five players under protocols, the Thunder are allowed to sign four replacement players on hardship deals on temporary 10-day contracts. The Thunder’s G League affiliate — the Oklahoma City Blue — run the same offenses and use the same jargon as its superior along with playing in the same arena for home games. So a transition from the Blue to the Thunder would be rather seamless if the franchise opts to call up players from the Blue as their replacements.

The trio of Pokusevski, Robinson-Earl and Wiggins played in Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans with Mann also being in the building.

Pokusevski, who turned 20 years old on Sunday, played eight minutes. Robinson-Earl played 26 minutes. Wiggins played 32 minutes. Mann participated in warmups before being ruled out during the game.

With five players heading into protocols, it is fair to say that the Thunder are having a COVID-19 outbreak and join the long list of NBA teams with similar struggles in recent weeks. It is now a wait-and-see game for the Thunder to see if they have any additional cases before Tuesday’s game against the Sacramento Kings.

OKC Thunder news: Tre Mann becomes second player to enter health and safety protocol

Tre Mann becomes the second Thunder player in mere hours to enter health and safety protocols.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced during the New Orleans Pelicans’ win that rookie guard Tre Mann had entered health and safety protocols.

This comes mere hours after teammate Darius Bazley became the first player on the Thunder to enter the protocols this season.

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault mentioned after the game that Mann tested positive Sunday morning but started showing symptoms as the day progresses and would re-test again. Mann was a pregame warmup participant before being ruled out.

With COVID-19 plaguing the NBA in recent weeks, the league created a hardship exception rule where a team can sign a player on a 10-day deal if two players are in health and safety protocols. The Thunder meets this threshold for the first time this season so it is going to be interesting to see who they sign to replace Bazley and Mann.

The franchise’s G League affiliate — the Oklahoma City Blue — have plenty of options to choose from. Blue player D.J. Wilson was recently signed from the Toronto Raptors on a 10-day deal due to the amount of players they had in health and safety protocols.

It’s unsure just how many more Thunder players will enter health and safety protocols but time will tell since the team has a day off until its next game against the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Tre Mann was a late scratch on Sunday after entering COVID protocols

Mann on Sunday was placed into the NBA’s health and safety protocols and was a last-minute scratch versus the Pelicans.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Tre Mann on Sunday was placed into the NBA’s health and safety protocols and was a last-minute scratch from the lineup versus the New Orleans Pelicans.

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault explained after the 117-112 victory that Mann initially tested negative on Sunday morning. However, he reported symptoms later in the day and was eventually re-tested and placed into the health and safety protocol.

Mann had been with the Thunder prior to the start of the game going through warmups on the court. He was eventually pulled from the lineup in the first quarter and did not play after leaving the team.

Players and coaches entered into the health and safety protocol are required to spend a minimum of 10 days in isolation. However, they can be cleared to play sooner if they return two consecutive negative PCR tests taken at least 24 hours apart.

The Thunder have mostly avoided issues regarding the coronavirus to this point. Mann joined Darius Bazley as the only two players on the roster in the health and safety protocol. The team was re-tested after the game with Mann leaving during the first quarter.

The NBA is in the middle of its most challenging stretch of the season as players and teams alike battle the latest wave within the coronavirus pandemic. During the month of December, more than 100 players have entered the health and safety protocol.

OKC Thunder quotes: Mark Daigneault and Tre Mann sound off ahead of Grizzlies matchup

Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault and guard Tre Mann met with the media after Sunday’s practice. Here’s what each had to say.

Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault and Tre Mann met with the media after practice on Sunday, a day after the team’s close, one-point win over the LA Clippers that included a Shai Gilgeous-Alexander buzzer-beater.

The Thunder will now head to Memphis to play the Grizzlies, who are on the second night of a back-to-back after falling 105-100 at home to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Let’s take a look at some of the more noteworthy quotes that Daigneault and Mann provided as the Thunder prepare to play the Grizzlies on Monday for the first time since their historic 73-point loss to them.

OKC Thunder news: Pokusevski, Mann and Jerome back to G League’s Blue

The Blue play on Friday and the Thunder play on Saturday, It only makes sense for the franchise to take advantage of that schedule by giving some guys some minutes.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Thursday that they have assigned Aleksej Pokusevski, Tre Mann and Ty Jerome to their G League affiliate — the Oklahoma City Blue.

With the Thunder’s next home game not played until Saturday and the Blue’s next home game played on Friday, there could definitely be a scenario where all three play the Blue game on Friday and get recalled in time for the Thunder’s game against the LA Clippers.

This is now Pokusevski’s second G League assignment in three days. The 19-year-old ended up playing in the Blue’s previous game and was subsequently recalled back with the Thunder.

Despite his recent success, Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault mentioned that Mann was due for a G League trip, so his assignment should not be that shocking.

Jerome has struggled to get consistent minutes with the Thunder all season, so this trip is likely to give him some extra practice time and maybe some game time where he plays a lot more.

OKC Thunder player grades: Thunder lose to red-hot shooting Lakers, 116-95

The Oklahoma City Thunder finally drop a game to the Los Angeles Lakers as LeBron James’ 33 points led the way.

After blowing two massive leads in their previous two matchups, the Los Angeles Lakers finally defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder on their third try. Missing the previous two games, LeBron James suited up tonight against the Thunder for the first time this season and dominated his way to an X-point win.

After the 6:48 mark of the first quarter, the Lakers took a lead that they never lost grip of for the rest of the game.

Friday’s game was what fans thought would have happened in the first two meetings more or less. Instead, the Lakers went up big both times and the young Thunder eventually chipped away huge leads in wins.

That was not really the case in tonight’s contest — sure, there were moments in the second and fourth quarters that created some interest. But it never really felt like the Lakers were in danger of blowing another 20+ point lead. Lakers eventually got things back on track after a little bit of discombobulation during the second quarter and ballooned their lead to an insurmountable amount.

With all that said, let’s take a look at some player grades for the Thunder side no matter how scarce it is in games like tonight.

Thunder view it as a priority to get Tre Mann more playing time

Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault said the team is intentionally trying to get Mann more playing time in the near future.

Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault on Monday said the team is intentionally trying to get rookie Tre Mann additional playing time in the near future.

Mann has spent time in the NBA G League this season with the OKC Blue as playing time has come at a premium with the Thunder. He has responded by averaging 15.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in six appearances with the Blue.

The Thunder have given Mann a larger role as of late to see what kind of progress he has made after playing with the Blue. The additional playing time resulted in a career performance on Monday in a loss to the Houston Rockets.

Mann recorded 17 points, seven rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot in a season-high 30 minutes of work. Daigneault can see improvement from Mann.

He is coming along, gaining confidence. We have shuttled him back and forth between the Blue — it is by design. But it doesn’t make it any easier for him with the change of scenery, change of role. Like I said the other night, we’re going to give him a little bit of a sustained look here because we kinda what to check in with him and see where he’s at. Obviously tonight, he got it going scoring-wise but he also was on the glass and defended well. His closeouts were strong.

The Thunder have asked Mann to focus on making high-effort plays, such as rebounding, chasing loose balls and doing the dirty work. He ultimately knows that is how he can stay in games longer and has committed to doing that on the court.

Mann is viewed by the Thunder as a scoring threat given his ability to create for himself and others. However, the offense hasn’t shown yet given such a limited role but Mann believes that can change with additional playing time.

Playing more, getting up more shots, my shots are starting to fall and playing with more rhythm and things like that but it’s really the defensive end for me. That’s what I’m trying to do – play hard on defense, get loose balls, get rebounds. I feel like that is going to keep me on the floor longer and as I’m on the floor, shots will fall and I’ll start to do more offense.

The assignment with the Blue in G League appears to be paying off as Mann looks to be more comfortable on the court. He has watched plenty of film throughout the season to see how he can get better shots, and that was on display on Monday.

The organization certainly has to like the progress Mann has made to this point of the season as it only looks to be the beginning of a bright future for him.

Tre Mann dropped a career-high 30 points in G League assignment

Mann became the 31st different player in the G League this season to score at least 30 points in a game.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Tre Mann on Tuesday became the 31st different player in the NBA G League this season to score at least 30 points in a game on assignment with OKC Blue.

Mann finished with a career-high 30 points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals during a 123-111 win over the Agua Caliente Clippers. He went 12-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range, in 34 minutes of work.

The assignment was his sixth appearance with the Blue. He had each element of his offensive game working, from finishing inside to shooting from beyond the arc. He used his athleticism and speed to create open looks for himself and had a number of easy drives into the paint.

With playing time, potentially, limited with the Thunder, the organization outlined a plan for Mann ahead of the season. He will spend portions of the season with the OKC Blue, a plan designed to maximize his development, head coach Mark Daigneault said.

The opportunity to play with the Blue will give him a great chance to continue his development and fine-tune aspects of his game with playing time limited in OKC.

He is averaging 13 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists with the Blue.
