Tre Herndon off to a strong start in 2023: ‘I feel good in the slot’

It seems like Tre Herndon has found a home in the slot.

Veteran cornerback Tre Herndon III briefly hit the free agency market earlier this year, but re-signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on a one-year deal. While it’s still early in the 2023 season, the Jaguars’ decision to bring back Herndon has looked like a wise one.

Through two games, Herndon’s 76.3 defensive grade from Pro Football Focus is easily the best of his career and fifth best on the Jaguars defense behind Andre Cisco, Josh Allen, Darious Williams, and Tyson Campbell.

Herndon, 27, first joined the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and has made 31 starts in his six-year career. But a recent move inside to the middle of the secondary has helped propel a recent surge.

“I feel good in the slot,” Herndon said after practice Thursday. “Coming in, I just wanted to make sure I could be as versatile as possible to help the team. So being able to play in the slot and be comfortable there is great, but if they need me to go outside, I like being able to do that, as well.”

With Campbell and Williams holding down the outside cornerback roles, Herndon has been freed up to do a little bit of everything at nickel. He’s found his way into the backfield on a couple blitzes, recording two quarterback pressures. Herndon also forced a fumble in Week 2 when he fought through blocks on a screen to hit the Kansas City Chiefs’ Kadarius Toney near the line of scrimmage.

Most importantly, he’s been reliable in coverage. On Thursday, Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell said Herndon was part of the reason Cisco was able to pull down an interception Sunday against Patrick Mahomes.

“If you look at the play, Tre Herndon was in great position, he was on top of the receiver,” Caldwell said. “He threw the ball to the opposite hash, we had a half-field safety over there which was Andre. He ended up where he was supposed to be and made a good play.”

“It’s going solid, man,” Herndon said of his season so far. “There’s a lot of things I could improve on, but it’s early in the season and I’m grateful to be healthy and be able to see those things to improve on, and build on as this long season proceeds.

“It’s been solid. I got my hands on the ball a couple times. I could fix some tackling, some reading keys a little faster, but it’s been good.”

5 Jaguars players to watch in preseason finale vs. Dolphins

Which Jaguars player will you be keeping a close eye on during the team’s preseason finale against the Dolphins?

The Jacksonville Jaguars will try to wrap up their preseason slate with an undefeated record on Saturday night when they host the Miami Dolphins.

While the Jaguars are suddenly dealing with a rash of injuries, head coach Doug Pederson is “still full steam ahead” on his plan to play the team’s starters for the entire first half.

With Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne Jr., Calvin Ridley, and co. getting a full half of play against the Dolphins, who should Jaguars fans be keeping a close eye on Saturday?

Here are five Jaguars players to watch closely against Miami:

Jaguars 2023 roster review: CB Tre Herndon III

Tre Herndon struggled at times during the 2022 season, but hit his stride when the Jaguars moved him into the slot.

The brunt of the offseason is in the books and training camp is still off on the horizon. Join us in the NFL’s dead zone with a player-by-player review of the Jaguars roster ahead of the 2023 season.

When Shaquill Griffin missed time during the 2022 season, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ first choice to replace him in the lineup was veteran cornerback Tre Herndon. It didn’t work out well, though.

The fifth-year veteran with 30 career starts struggled on the outside and the Jaguars cycled through other options before finding consistent play from Darious Williams. It wasn’t until he was moved to the slot late in the season that Jacksonville got quality play out of Herndon.

In the last three games of the regular season, Herndon earned a grade of at least 71 from PFF.

With few changes made in the secondary during the 2023 offseason, it appears Herndon is the favorite to begin next season as the Jaguars’ top option in the slot.

Contract (2023): $2.43 million base salary, $152,500 signing bonus, $1,232,500 cap hit.

Acquired: Jaguars signed Herndon as a rookie free agent on April 30, 2018.

Quote: “We have a guy that’s played at different spots on the field — corner, nickel, he could play safety for you — and we know where he’s going to be. As a coach and as an organization, when you have guys that you can count on, those are hard to get rid of.” – Jaguars passing game coordinator Deshea Townsend on Herndon
