Trio of former Clemson players shine in Falcons-Ravens preseason game

Here’s how three former Clemson players fared in Saturday’s Atlanta Falcons-Baltimore Ravens preseason contest.

Three players from Clemson saw action in Saturday’s Atlanta Falcons-Baltimore Ravens NFL preseason game at M&T Bank Stadium.

Ruke Orhorhoro, the Falcons’ 2024 second-round draft pick (35th overall), picked up his first career NFL sack by dropping quarterback Josh Johnson on the Ravens’ first drive of the game. The play came less than three minutes into the contest and resulted in a 12-yard loss.

Orhorhoro’s sack came a week after he had two tackles (one solo) in Atlanta’s preseason opener against Miami on Aug. 9.

Two other former Dabo Swinney players made an impact for the Ravens. Trenton Simpson delivered a big hit on Falcons quarterback Taylor Heinicke in the first quarter. Simpson had two tackles, including one for loss when he dropped Falcons rookie running back Jase McClellan in the backfield. He also broke up a pass.

Simpson was a third-round pick (86th overall) by Atlanta in 2023 and figures to play an important role in the team’s linebacking corps this season after the departure of Patrick Queen in free agency. Simpson led the Ravens in tackling (11 total tackles, 5 solo) in the team’s preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Aug. 9.

Former Tigers cornerback Trayvon Mullen finished with two tackles and broke up a pass for the Ravens. Mullen is entering his sixth year in the league after being drafted by the Raiders in the second round (40th overall) in 2019. Mullen signed with the Ravens in 2023 but missed all of last season while recovering from a toe injury.

Nate Wiggins, the Ravens’ 2024 first-round pick (30th overall) did not play in Saturday’s game after suffering a shoulder injury in the team’s preseason opener. Wiggins returned to practice on Thursday and figures to be ready to play in Baltimore’s regular-season opener against Kansas City on Sept. 5.

Baltimore defeated Atlanta, 13-12, Saturday.

Ravens CB Trayvon Mullen to miss few weeks with shoulder injury

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Trayvon Mullen to miss few weeks with shoulder injury

Head coach John Harbaugh announced that reserve cornerback Trayvon Mullen will miss a few weeks after suffering a shoulder injury in Monday’s practice.

The former Clemson star is a former second-round pick who has battled injuries for the past few seasons.

The Ravens claimed Mullen off waivers last January and signed the talented cornerback to a reserve/futures deal after the regular season and playoffs concluded.

Baltimore also announced that Malik Hamm will miss the 2024 season with a torn ACL.

Ravens CB Trayvon Mullen exits training camp practice with a shoulder injury

The former Clemson star exited practice early with what was confirmed by head coach John Harbaugh to be a shoulder problem.

Trayvon Mullen faces an uphill battle to make the Baltimore Ravens roster, but there is a chance he could stick as a third-string cornerback.

Of course, he’ll have to stay fully healthy to accomplish that, as injuries have held him back in recent years. Saturday saw Mullen suffer yet another injury issue.

The former Clemson star exited practice early with what head coach John Harbaugh confirmed was a shoulder problem.

“He fell on it, his shoulder, so we’re going to have to see where we’re at when we get back in there (the training room).”

We should know more about his status by the end of the weekend.

Mullen, who has not played since 2022, was claimed off waivers by the Ravens in January 2023.

The club re-signed him that March but then released him due to a non-football injury designation in July. The Ravens then placed the five-year veteran on the non-football injury list.

He’s seen action with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, and Dallas Cowboys throughout his career.

Nate Wiggins to join former Tigers with the Ravens

Wiggins will join two former Tigers when he arrives in Baltimore.

Last night, Nate Wiggins was the first Clemson player to be selected in the 2024 NFL Draft. He was selected with the 30th pick of the first round and is heading to Baltimore to play with the Ravens.

Sports analysts, Clemson fans, and the Ravens’ faithful were fawning over the pick on social media, and luckily, Wiggins will have friendly faces to greet him when he arrives. The Ravens have two former Tigers on their roster.

His former teammate Trenton Simpson was selected by the Ravens with the 86th pick of the 2023 draft. At Clemson, Simpson had 166 tackles, 99 solo, 12.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and five pass deflections. Last season with Baltimore, he played in 15 games as a rookie and recorded 13 tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery.

However, the other player is more Wiggins’ speed (pun completely intended). Trayvon Mullen was picked up off waivers by Baltimore in 2023 but missed the season after having surgery on his toe.

Mullen was drafted by the Raiders in the second round of the 2019 draft, and in six seasons as a pro, he has recorded 150 tackles, 123 solo, 29 passes defended, and four interceptions.

At Clemson, Mullen was a part of the 2016-17 and 2018-19 National Championship squads. In his three years with Clemson, he accumulated 92 tackles, 67 solo, two sacks, seven pass deflections, and four interceptions.

While Wiggins might not be as familiar with Mullen, the veteran cornerback offers a great deal of experience that Wiggins could utilize.

Ravens release CB Trayvon Mullen with failure to disclose physical condition designation

TheRavens released cornerback Trayvon Mullen with a failure to disclose physical condition designation

The Baltimore Ravens are putting plenty of trust in the young cornerbacks on their roster in 2023. Outside of Marlon Humphrey, Rock Ya-Sin and Arthur Maulet, the team will be relying on players such as Jalyn Armour-Davis, Pepe Williams, Ar’Darius Washington and others.

One of the players that Baltimore was excited about was cornerback Trayvon Mullen, who the team signed after stints with the Las Vegas Raiders, Dallas Cowboys and others. However, on Friday the Ravens released Mullen with a non-football injury designation, something that was later clarified as an injury that was failed to be disclosed.

Ravens officially claim CB Trayvon Mullen off of waivers from Cowboys

The Ravens officially claimed cornerback Trayvon Mullen off of waivers from the Cowboys

When the Baltimore Ravens claimed cornerback Trayvon Mullen off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys, all parties involved knew that the move would only be finalized after the Super Bowl. Now, days after the big game, Mullen is officially a Raven.

Baltimore’s newest defender is a former second-round pick who played his college ball at Clemson before being drafted by the then-Oakland Raiders in 2019. At six-foot-two inches tall, he has the length to compete for contested balls on the boundary, and with his 4.46 40-yard dash time, can outrun a fair number of the league’s wide receivers.

Though he is far from a star at this point in his career, Mullen was a two-time champion during his time at Clemson, and even won the defensive MVP in the National Championship Game back in 2019. He has brought down four interceptions over the course of his NFL career and has played for the Arizona Cardinals as well as the Raiders and Cowboys since entering the league.

Mullen will need to show something special to cut it in Baltimore’s stacked secondary, but if he can, he could prove to be a valuable asset in the Ravens’ defensive backfield.

Ravens claim CB Trayvon Mullen off of waivers from Cowboys

The Ravens claimed cornerback Trayvon Mullen off of waivers from the Cowboys

The Baltimore Ravens are one week into their offseason, with plenty of question marks heading into the 2023 season.  The front office is currently requesting and conducting interviews for potential offensive coordinators and also need to work on a long-term deal with quarterback Lamar Jackson.

General manager Eric DeCosta is continuing to reshape the roster, especially in the secondary with more depth by claiming cornerback Trayvon Mullen off of waivers from the Dallas Cowboys. Mullen was a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft of the Las Vegas Raiders out of Clemson University.

In his three seasons in the NFL with the Raiders, Arizona Cardinals, and Cowboys, Mullen has a total of 150 tackles, four interceptions, and one forced fumble.  Another fact about Mullen is that he’s the cousin of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, something that potentially adds another piece to the move.

Cowboys claim former second-round CB off waivers

Trayvon Mullen was waived by the Cardinals on Tuesday; he had come to Arizona in a trade after three seasons with the Raiders. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys continue to add puzzle pieces late in the year, hoping they help contribute to a finished picture of a sixth Lombardi Trophy coming home to Dallas.

On Wednesday, the team claimed cornerback Trayvon Mullen off waivers. The Arizona Cardinals had released the 25-year-old on Tuesday.

Mullen was a second-round pick of the Raiders in 2019, selecting him 40th overall. A Clemson product, the Florida native played on two national championship Tigers squads and had been named Defensive MVP of the CFP National Championship Game in the school’s 44-16 win over Alabama just a few months prior to the NFL draft.

The Clemson quarterback Mullen faced that season was Trevor Lawrence; Dallas will face him this Sunday in Jacksonville.

With the Raiders in 2019, Mullen saw immediate action as a rookie, logging 50 tackles, 10 passes defensed, and an interception in his first season. He played in 36 consecutive games to open his Raiders career (and started in 30) until a foot injury put him on injured reserve in 2021. He came back for one game and suffered a toe injury that ended his season.

Mullen was traded to the Cardinals in late August, shortly before the start of the regular season, but has been inactive for five of the team’s 13 outings. Arizona waived him a day after their 27-13 to New England on Monday night; Mullen committed a costly facemask penalty during the game to put the Patriots offense at the Cardinals’ 14-yard-line, resulting in a touchdown.

Mullen is the second veteran cornerback the Cowboys have added to the roster in recent days. The team signed former Vikings second-round draft pick Mackensie Alexander on Dec. 7.

Both will bolster a young group in Dallas that features Kelvin Joseph, Nahshon Wright, and rookie DaRon Bland alongside Trevon Diggs. Veterans Jourdan Lewis and Anthony Brown had their seasons cut short by injury.

Cardinals cut CB Trayvon Mullen, sign QB to practice squad

Arizona makes a couple of roster moves on Tuesday.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a somewhat surprising roster move on Tuesday following the team’s 27-13 loss  to the New England Patriots. The team released cornerback Trayvon Mullen.

Mullen played a season-high 42 defensive snaps on Monday. He played 120 snaps in eight games.

In eight games, he had 13 tackles, a pass breakup, a quarterback hit and a forced fumble.

The Cardinals acquired Mullen in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders prior to the season.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, if Mullen plays in two more games, the Cardinals will give up a sixth-round pick. As of now, the compensation would only be a seventh-rounder.

This move might be simple roster manipulation.

Tight end Maxx Williams has been elevated to the 53-man roster three times from the practice squad using a standard elevation. He has no more standard elevations remaining. With only two tight ends on the active roster, Williams will likely be signed to it this week. Mullen could be re-signed to the practice squad and elevated for games moving forward.

The Cardinals’ other roster move was not announced by the team but reported by Garafolo. They are signing quarterback Carson Strong to the practice squad.

Strong was brought in for a tryout last week. He is an undrafted rookie who had a standout career at Nevada. He signed originally with the Eagles.

With Kyler Murray being out for the rest of the season, the Cardinals need a third quarterback on the team for practice. Strong will be that guy.

Trayvon Mullen cut by Cardinals, conditional draft pick traded to Raiders winds up 7th rounder

Conditional pick Raiders receive from Cardinals for Trayvon Mullen winds up being a 7th rounder as former 2nd rounder is cut

Two more games. That’s all the more games Trayvon Mullen needed to play for the Cardinals to turn the conditional pick they traded to the Raiders become a sixth round pick.

Today the Cardinals cut the former second round pick which means he won’t meet the minimum threshold and thus the pick the Raiders will receive will be a seventh round pick.

Mullen was traded before the season as the Raiders went with Rock Ya-Sin and Nate Hobbs as their primary starters with Anthony Averett as the third corner.

Meanwhile Mullen has appeared in eight games for Arizona, playing a total of 124 snaps on defense. The 42 snaps he saw last Sunday was a season high for him.

What’s interesting now is now on injured reserve for the second time this season and the Raiders have been digging into their depth chart and practice squad for snaps at cornerback. So, if they felt like bringing Mullen back, they may have a chance to do so.
