Watch: Rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis swats clutch block against Jaylen Brown in OT vs. Celtics

The rookie came up clutch in overtime against the Celtics.

While overtime between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics will be remembered by Steph Curry’s dagger 3-pointer in the final seconds, rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis made a clutch play on the defensive end of the floor that’s worthy of a highlight reel.

After an emphatic slam dunk to give the Warriors a four-point lead in overtime, Jackson-Davis impacted defense against the Celtics.

When Celtics wing Jaylen Brown flew to the bucket to throw down a dunk of his own, Golden State’s rookie big man met him at the rim. Jackson-Davis sent away Brown with a powerful block at the rim to deny the Celtics.

Steve Kerr believes Warriors rookies can provide a consistent spark

The Golden State Warriors rookies are earning their minutes courtesy of the energy they provide off the bench.

The Golden State Warriors suffered their third straight defeat when they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday.

The Warriors have multiple players struggling to make an impact to begin the season, hurting the roster’s overall energy levels throughout games. That lack of energy has meant Steve Kerr has been relying on Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis to change the tempo of games.

When speaking to the media following his team’s latest loss, Kerr noted how both rookies can consistently affect the floor for the Warriors. However, with so much talent, Kerr is cautious about changing the rotation. However, he noted that if the roster continues to struggle, Podziemski and Jackson-Davis could find themselves being part of the rotation more frequently.

“We’ve seen that Brandin and Trayce are ready to contribute. We saw it in training camp,” Kerr said. “These guys, they’re ready. We have to make the decision if we want to get them out there more. I’d love to. It’s tricky because we’re already playing 10, even without those guys. And I like everybody I’m playing. But if we struggle, we gotta get guys out there that give us a spark, and we know they’re both capable.”

Golden State’s rotation has looked devoid of energy for most of the opening few weeks. Outside of Steph Curry, very few players have impressed consistently. If bringing Jackson-Davis and Podziemski into the full-time rotation gives the team the boost it needs, it will not be long until Kerr makes that change.

[Slater] Steve Kerr: “No question. We need some scoring and playmaking from elsewhere (besides Steph Curry).”

It’s unlikely Kerr will make a change to the rotation in the immediate future. Yet, if the energy levels and production don’t start to trend in the right direction, Podziemski and Jackson-Davis could see their minutes take a sharp upturn.

Nikola Jokic provides glowing praise on Trayce Jackson-Davis

The championship-winning big man was impressed with the Golden State Warriors rookie’s performance.

Nikola Jokic was impressed by Golden State Warriors rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis. The first-year center earned his first taste of guarding Jokic when the two teams faced off on Nov. 8. The Denver Nuggets won the game 105-108. Jackson-Davis played a bigger role than usual due to the absence of Draymond Green, who missed the game due to an injury.

When speaking to the media after the game, Jokic had glowing praise for the Warriors rookie. The veteran big man noted how Jackson-Davis played at such a level that he didn’t appear to be a rookie talent. The first-year big has been impressive to begin his debut season in the league.

To be honest, he didn’t look like a rookie — maybe in some situations — (but) he doesn’t look like a rookie,” Jokic said. “They put him in a system, and he accepted the system. And he didn’t feel like he was like a rookie. Besides, maybe some situations”

Jackson-Davis has participated in six games so far, averaging 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds while shooting 60% from the field. He has impressed with his positioning and defensive IQ. He makes the right reads, knows when to rotate over as a help defender, and when to stick with his man.

As a four-year college player, Jackson-Davis entered the NBA a more polished talent than a one-and-done prospect. The polish has allowed the rookie to hit the ground running. It will be interesting to see how his game evolves as the season progresses. Furthermore, getting praise from arguably the best player in the world will be a huge confidence boost for Jackson-Davis, which will aid his development.

Steph Curry praises rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis performance vs. Nuggets, Nikola Jokic

Steph Curry praised rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis after his solid performance against two-time MVP Nikola Jokic.

Without Draymond Green on Wednesday, the Golden State Warriors had to lean on rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis in the front court against the defending champion Denver Nuggets.

After a solid start to his rookie campaign, the former Indiana Hoosier was tasked with one of the toughest challenges in the association: defending two-time Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic.

In 18 minutes off the bench, Jackson-Davis recorded eight points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field to go along with two rebounds and an assist. Jackson Davis finished with plus-4 against the Nuggets on Wednesday.

Guarding Jokic, Jackson-Davis was active, showing good hands, athleticism and a fresh motor. Following the rookie’s impressive effort against one of the league’s best players, Steph Curry praised his young teammate.

He did great. Jokic is a beast. He averages whatever he averages across the whole league. It’s tough to stop him. You just try to make him work. I think after the first possession where he spun baseline and they called a foul. I think he kind of understood angles and just being ready to play — and then making him guard him on the other end, too.

That’s what Trayce can bring to us on both ends of the floor. Lob and-one, got to free throw line a couple times in the second half, made a transition layup where he’s putting pressure on their entire team at the rim. He plays with confidence and he’ll understand the nuances of arguably the best center in the league right now, arguably him and Joel. Its a tall task and I think he did a great job.

Via @NBCSWarriors on Twitter:

In the Warriors one-point loss, Jokic did what he does, scoring 35 points on 14-of-25 shooting with 13 rebounds, five assists, three steals and a block in 37 minutes.

With another solid performance under his belt against one of the best players in the league, Jackson-Davis is clearly earning more playing time in Steve Kerr’s rotation, regardless of injuries to players higher on the depth chart. Jackson-Davis will have the chance to keep his fast start going against Evan Mobley, Jarret Allen and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday.

Steph Curry praises Warriors rookies effort and impact

Steph Curry has been impressed with the Golden State Warriors two rookie talents during the opening weeks of the new season.

The Golden State Warriors recalled Trayce Jackson-Davis and Brandin Podziemski from the Santa Cruz Warriors a day earlier than scheduled. The rookies were then featured in their team’s 114-104 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. Despite the loss, both rookies gave a good account of themselves, as they brought energy to the rotation and impressed with their decision-making.

Speaking after the game, Steph Curry praised Jackson-Davis and Podziemski for the great job they’ve been doing since being drafted by Golden State in the summer. Curry’s comments follow similar praise from Draymond Green after the Warriors’ win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday, when the rookies were absent from the rotation.

“They bring great energy,” Curry said. “They approach the game the right way. That’s why we love having them around. You can throw them in there and they look like they belong. So, it’s nice to see them play with confidence, play with energy, and give us a huge bump…They’re doing a great job.”

Last season, the Warriors had an unbalanced roster, with multiple developmental talents in the locker room. This season, Mike Dunleavy Jr. has targeted veteran additions to give the Warriors more balance. As such, Jackson-Davis and Podziemski are in an environment built to develop character and skill level.

The two rookies can look toward Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody‘s start to the season as proof the franchise’s talent development system can pay dividends. Nevertheless, both rookies have impressed to start the season and will likely feature throughout their team’s run toward the playoffs. Both have the talent to be in the NBA for a long time.

Draymond Green admits Warriors missed rookies’ energy against Thunder

Draymond Green believes the Warriors sending their rookies to the G-League hurt the team’s overall energy against the Oklahoma City Thunder

The Golden State Warriors assigned Trayce Jackson-Davis and Brandin Podziemski to the Santa Cruz Warriors ahead of their game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Golden State won the Nov. 3 contest but struggled to match their opponent’s energy for stretches of the game.

According to Draymond Green, the Warriors needed their rookies to provide some “juice” off the bench. The veteran forward told the media he hopes the Warriors have Jackson-Davis and Podziemski on their bench for their next in-season tournament game. Both rookies have had a strong start to life in the NBA and have proven capable of making an impact when called upon.

“I thought our energy wasn’t there. That could have been a lot better. I also think our young fellas not being here, Trayce, BP, and Lester, and the energy that they bring to this team, we missed that. So, next time we have an in-season tournament game, we need those guys here.

They bring a lot of juice for us. You always talk about young guys bringing energy, that’s their job, we don’t have to tell those guys to bring energy, they do it every day…They’re a big part of the fabric of this team, we missed them tonight.”

The Warriors’ front office has done a great job of balancing veteran leadership and young talent. The blend is giving the bench rotation a new dimension and allowing Steve Kerr to cycle through lineup combinations to begin the season.

Following Green’s postgame comments, it will be interesting to see if Jackson-Davis and Podziemski are part of their team’s rotation when they play the Minnesota Timberwolves on Nov. 14 in what will be their next in-season tournament game.

Warriors’ Draymond Green on Podziemski, Jackson-Davis: ‘We need them here’

Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis weren’t on hand Friday for the Warriors, and Draymond Green could feel their absence.

Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis weren’t on hand Friday when the Golden State Warriors played the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Draymond Green could feel their absence.

The Warriors announced prior to the contest that they had assigned Podziemski and Jackson-Davis to their G League affiliate in Santa Cruz. Steve Kerr had hinted they could spend time in the G League to get consistent practice and game time.

Without them, though, Green believed the team’s energy was lacking.

Stephen Curry led the way with 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as the Warriors pulled out the win, 141-139, to start the in-season tournament. Jonathan Kuminga scored 19 points off the bench, Klay Thompson had 18 points and Green added 15 points.

“The energy that they bring to this team, we missed that,” Green said. “Next time we have an in-season tournament game, we need those guys here because they bring a lot of juice for us. You always talk about young guys bringing energy, and that’s their job. We don’t have to tell those guys to bring energy; they do it every single day. I wasn’t overly shocked that our energy wasn’t there because they are the guys that lift our energy level, and they weren’t here.”

The two first-year players have three appearances between them this season, but they played a key role in helping the Warriors defeat New Orleans on Monday.

Without Thompson and Kuminga, Kerr called upon them. Jackson-Davis responded with 13 points and nine rebounds, and Podziemski added five points, eight rebounds and two assists in the 130-102 victory.

They found out that morning that they’d likely log significant playing time with Thompson and Kuminga out of the lineup. They impressed the team throughout training camp and were ready when their numbers were called.

Podziemski and Jackson-Davis will likely stay in the G League. Santa Cruz is holding training camp ahead of its season opener on Friday. But Green is hopeful they will be recalled before their next in-season tournament game on Nov. 14.

“We need them here,” Green said. “They’re a big part of the fabric of this team. We missed them tonight.”
