Lakers ‘could be split’ on whether to pursue Trae Young

The Lakers organization may not be unified in its desire to land Trae Young via trade this summer.

For the Los Angeles Lakers, this offseason will likely determine whether they will have a real shot at competing for the NBA championship next season or go years or perhaps even decades without doing so.

The big rumor, which has been talked about across the league for months, is that they will try to trade for a third star this summer. It is a questionable approach for multiple reasons, one of which is the challenge of landing the right third star and making him fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

It has been reported that Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young will be one of L.A.’s top trade targets. However, according to Shams Charania, Jovan Buha and Sam Amick, some within the organization may not be on board with going after Young.

Via The Athletic:

“The Lakers are expected to be aggressive in the market, with Atlanta’s Trae Young one of the more intriguing names out there. The Lakers’ room could be split on him as they try to make the most of this precious time in which James and Davis are still playing at an elite level. He’ll be one of many names that is expected to be discussed.

“The team needs backcourt help, particularly after (D’Angelo) Russell’s up-and-down play against the (Denver) Nuggets for a second consecutive season.”

Young averaged 25.7 points and 10.8 assists a game this season for a Hawks team that didn’t make the playoffs. However, he shot just 43% from the field and turned the ball over a whopping 4.4 times a contest. At 6-foot-1 and 164 pounds, he’s also considered a defensive liability.

He will also make about $43 million next season, which would make him a very expensive option for a Lakers team that will already owe Davis over $43 million next season and could bring back James for over $50 million per year.

Is Trae Young a trade target for the San Antonio Spurs?

Do the Spurs really prefer Dejounte Murray?

If you want to call Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz a doubter for his skepticism of the possibility of veteran point guard Chris Paul joining the San Antonio Spurs in free agency, we doubt he will mind too much. But Spurs fans may also be interested to hear that Swartz has more doubts about San Antonio’s coming offseason.

There have been plenty of rumbles about potential Spurs interest in a potential trade for Atlanta Hawks star point guard Trae Young. And even more rumbles about San Antonio not being interested in such a deal, whether as smokescreen or as fact. And once again, Swartz isn’t buying it.

“If Young doesn’t fit with perhaps the greatest defensive talent the NBA has seen since Bill Russell, who does he fit with exactly?” asks the B/R analyst. “Young and Wembanyama would complement each other’s games perfectly.”

“Young is one of the best passers in the NBA who would allow Wembanyama to feast off lobs and no-look cuts to the basket,” adds Swartz. “The Spurs should have at least exploratory interest in the price of a Young trade.”

But perhaps San Antonio has other reasons for not wanting to burn assets to land a player who has won little and ruffled plenty of feathers in the process of doing so.

How true is rumor that Spurs don’t want to trade for Trae Young?

How true is the rumor that the San Antonio Spurs don’t see Trae Young as a fit?

Trae Young and the San Antonio Spurs were connected via trade rumors throughout portions of this past season. However, a recent report indicated that the Spurs don’t see it as a good fit. Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report recently wrote an article “buying or selling” rumors, and he doesn’t believe that San Antonio dislikes the Young fit.

“The question now becomes: If Young doesn’t fit with perhaps the greatest defensive talent the NBA has seen since Bill Russell, who does he fit with exactly?” Swartz wrote. “Young and Wembanyama would complement each other’s games perfectly. Young is one of the best passers in the NBA who would allow Wembanyama to feast off lobs and no-look cuts to the basket.

“On the other end, the 7’4” center would cover up Young’s defensive deficiencies perhaps better than anyone after already leading the NBA in blocked shots per game as a rookie (3.6). Young’s unlimited shooting range would make it tougher for defenses to double-team Wembanyama as he only gets stronger and adds to his offensive game. The Spurs should have at least exploratory interest in the price of a Young trade. Buy or Sell: Sell the Spurs not seeing Young and Wembanyama as fits. This would be an ideal pairing for the next 10-plus years.”

Should the San Antonio Spurs look to add Trae Young or Dejounte Murray?

Should San Antonio’s front office make a bold move to accelerate the team’s current rebuild?

But Atlanta is reportedly listening to offers from both with the partnership clearly not working out. Should San Antonio’s front office make a bold move to accelerate the team’s current rebuild around Victor Wembanyama? or is a patient approach the wiser path for longer-term, sustained success with Wemby?

The host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, sits down with KENS 5’s Casey Viera stops by to talk about the new rumor that the Spurs are not trying to add Young but are instead after Murray.

Report: Spurs don’t see Trae Young as fit next to Victor Wembanyama

The San Antonio Spurs reportedly don’t see Trae Young as a fit next to Victor Wembanyama.

As the San Antonio Spurs look to improve their roster around Victor Wembanyama this summer, adding a top-tier playmaker should be one of their top priorities. Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young has been rumored as a potential target, but according to Kurt Helin of NBC Sports, San Antonio may not be in on that idea anymore.

“One other note. Spurs fans have been buzzing about the team getting in the mix for a Trae Young trade this summer, as he is the most acclaimed point guard likely to be available,” Helin wrote. “League sources have told NBC Sports not to bet on that happening, as San Antonio doesn’t see Young as a fit with Wembanyama going forward. The Spurs might be more interested in the Hawks’ Dejounte Murray if he is available.”

Young’s massive contract and lack of presence on the defensive end could be potential factors why the Spurs would rather go after Dejounte Murray or completely pivot away from a deal with the Hawks.

Lakers to have ‘serious interest’ in Trae Young if Hawks move him

It’s looking more and more like the Lakers will try to go after Trae Young this summer.

The Los Angeles Lakers begin the NBA playoffs today against the defending world champion Denver Nuggets, the team that swept them in last year’s Western Conference Finals and has won eight straight against them. But some are still looking ahead and talking about what this summer may have in store for them.

Assuming the Lakers lose again to Denver, it will be clear that they’re still one or two pieces short of being a championship team. Since LeBron James is 39 years of age, he can’t and shouldn’t carry the load as much as he has in the past.

To that end, L.A. is rumored to be in the market for a third star this offseason. Reportedly, Trae Young is their biggest target, and they will be one team with serious interest in him if the Atlanta Hawks decide to get rid of him.

Via Bleacher Report:

“If the Hawks decide Young is the guard to move, the Lakers are believed to be one of the teams with serious interest,” wrote Eric Pincus. “Whether he’s the right fit is debatable (he doesn’t play well off the ball, and LeBron James usually has it in his hands to end games), but the Lakers have been known to chase players that may or may not fit (Russell Westbrook).”

After losing in the play-in tournament, the Hawks will not be participating in this year’s playoffs. There has been speculation for a while that they want to break up their starting backcourt of Young and Dejounte Murray.

A strong argument could be made that Murray would be a much better fit for the Lakers. He is a more efficient shooter, a much better defender and a better decision-maker, not to mention less expensive.

The Lakers, of course, were seriously in pursuit of Murray prior to the trade deadline this year.

Doubt cast on potential Spurs-Trae Young trade this offseason

Is a Trae Young trade actually realistic for the San Antonio Spurs?

As the San Antonio Spurs look to build around Victor Wembanyama adding talent around him that fits will be crucial. They were linked to Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young in potential trade talks throughout the season, and those rumors will almost certainly bleed into the summer. However, Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News thinks San Antonio will hold off on taking a big swing.

“The 25-year-old Young, who has averaged at least 25 points for five consecutive seasons, would certainly give the Spurs an elite scorer to pair with Wembanyama,” McDonald wrote. “The cost of acquiring Young might prove too steep, especially considering the Spurs would need to re-sign him to a maximum contract in 2026 to make the deal worth anyone’s while.

“The Spurs would then be locked into the Wembanyama-Young pairing for years, without the wherewithal to add to it. The Spurs haven’t ruled out engaging in discussions about Young or another star this summer, but it is more likely their biggest swing comes later.”

Young is great, and he would be a solid pairing next to Wembanyama, but is it worth the price?

NBA Twitter reacts to Trae Young struggling in play-in game vs. Bulls: ‘He’s a Spur’

Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to Trae Young’s performance against the Chicago Bulls in the play-in game.

Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks have been eliminated from the NBA’s playoff contention after losing to the Chicago Bulls 131-116 in the play-in game.

Despite finishing the game with a double-double (22 points, 10 assists), Trae Young struggled from the field, shooting 4/12, while he also turned the ball over six times.

Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to Young and the Hawks missing out on the playoffs.

Would a Trae Young trade be perfect or disastrous for Spurs?

Should the San Antonio Spurs trade for Trae Young?

When the San Antonio Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama, they embarked on a quest to build the perfect team around him. He was one of the most hyped-up prospects in recent memory, and yet somehow, he’s managed to outperform many of the expectations placed upon him. But what’s next? How can the Spurs improve the team around him?

One idea that was reportedly explored was a potential trade for Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young. Pairing Young’s elite offensive game with Wembanyama could be a great combination, but there are an equal number of concerns that should be acknowledged with a potential Young trade. Most notably, his subpar play on the defensive end.

The NBA Swish YouTube channel recently discussed whether a Spurs trade for Young would be great or a disaster.

San Antonio will likely explore potential moves this summer, but is a trade for Young the right direction to go in?

Should the San Antonio Spurs pursue Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young?

The basic framework takes the Hawks and Chicago Bulls as partners for San Antonio.

Should the San Antonio Spurs pursue Atlanta Hawks star point guard Trae Young to pair with French rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama? Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus recently put together a hypothetical three-team deal to explore what such a pursuit might look like for all parties, and it is no minor trade for any of the three teams he envisions in the deal.

The basic framework takes the Hawks and Chicago Bulls as partners for San Antonio, and has the Spurs send Tre Jones, Devonte’ Graham, and five first round picks to Atlanta, and Sidy Cissoko from the Bulls. Chicago gets the Hawks’ De’Andre Hunter, and the Spurs Young, Jevon Carter (from the Bulls), and a first round pick from Atlanta.

In a sense, this deal could be seen as a delayed Trae Young swap for Dejounte Murray, according to Pincus.

The deal would also help, in theory, give a spark to a Hawks rebuild that has started to sputter.

It would also give the Bulls a way to shuffle the deck without starting a major rebuild, which may be exactly what all three parties are after.
