Former Sooner Alondes Williams throws down monster dunk in Summer League

Williams spent two seasons in Norman before transferring to Wake Forest.

Former Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball player [autotag]Alondes Williams[/autotag] is making quite the impression on the NBA this summer.

The former OU guard is taking part in the NBA2K Summer League as a member of the Miami Heat. He threw down perhaps the dunk of the summer in Las Vegas on Wednesday night against the Dallas Mavericks.

10/10, no notes.

Williams played two seasons for the Sooners from 2019 to 2021. He was a member of the last OU men’s basketball team to win a game in the [autotag]NCAA tournament,[/autotag] as Oklahoma made it to the second round in 2021, [autotag]Lon Kruger[/autotag]’s final season.

The combo guard transferred to Wake Forest for his final season of college basketball before going undrafted in 2022. He signed with the Brooklyn Nets before being traded to the Miami Heat. Plays like that could help him catch on in the league.

Williams is trying to become the fourth active Sooner in the NBA after [autotag]Blake Griffin[/autotag]’s retirement earlier this year. [autotag]Buddy Hield[/autotag] (Warriors), [autotag]Trae Young[/autotag] (Hawks) and [autotag]Austin Reaves[/autotag] (Lakers) are the other three.

Reed Sheppard focused on growth, teammates with summer Rockets

“Keep getting in the gym and keep building relationships with your teammates,” Rockets rookie Reed Sheppard says of his summer-league priorities.

Two games into the NBA’s 2024 summer league in Las Vegas, Rockets rookie Reed Sheppard is already showing why he’s a vital piece of Houston’s new formula for returning to the postseason.

At the moment, Sheppard is averaging 22.5 points per game, which ties 2023 summer-league MVP Cam Whitmore for Houston’s lead.

In that case, he can not only help the team reach its short-term goal of winning a summer-league title, but he may also give head coach Ime Udoka a better feel for where he fits in the rotation.

Sheppard, the Rockets’ No. 3 overall selection in this year’s draft, is taking it all in — one day at a time. He knows that the process will take time, so as of now, he is just taking it slowly and getting acclimated to playing against the NBA-level competition.

“At the end of the day, it’s basketball,” Sheppard said after helping his team improve to 2-0 by defeating Washington. “You get to go and play the game you love with really good players and teammates, and I am super pumped to get out there and play the game I love.”

One promising sign is the chemistry that Sheppard and Whitmore have established. Throughout Sunday’s game, the former Kentucky standout found Whitmore slashing to the basket for multiple dunks that brought the crowd to their feet. That included regular-season teammates Jabari Smith Jr. and Amen Thompson, seated baseline.

“It’s very exciting playing with Reed,” Whitmore told reporters after the 18-point victory. “He can do everything, even on the defensive end. Even though he is not the tallest, he still has skills; he can get in the gaps and can get in the passing lane. He can finish, play-make, he can shoot. He can do everything on the floor.”

The rookie’s performance is not going unnoticed on social media, with esteemed NBA veterans like Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks and Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies among those acknowledging Sheppard’s game on their social media platforms. Even with that type of attention, Sheppard remains focused on improving.

“Keep getting in the gym and keep building relationships with your teammates,” Sheppard said when asked about that praise. “Just stick to yourself. Don’t try to be anyone else or anyone.”

Trae Young, Ja Morant impressed by summer brilliance of Rockets’ Reed Sheppard

Grizzlies star Ja Morant and Hawks star Trae Young are among those taking notice of Reed Sheppard’s brilliant summer play for the Rockets.

Through two NBA summer-league games, rookie guard Reed Sheppard has been sensational for the Houston Rockets.

After being drafted at No. 3 in the 2024 first round in June, Sheppard is currently averaging 22.5 points, 6.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals, and 2.0 blocks in 31.0 minutes per game — all while shooting better than 55% from the field and 45% on 3-pointers.

Most importantly, the numbers have contributed to winning for the Rockets, who are 2-0 with a pair of dominant 18-point victories.

Beyond earning praise from media members and fans, Sheppard also appears to be turning heads from players within the league.

Trae Young and Ja Morant — recent All-Star guards with the Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies, respectively — addressed Sheppard’s play with social media posts on X during Sunday’s game.

Young posted: “Reed Sheppard nice, y’all!”

Morant then quoted Young’s post with multiple exclamation points.

Complete highlights of Sheppard’s latest showing are available below. As for the summer Rockets, they will look to continue their unbeaten run when they face the Detroit Pistons on Monday afternoon.

Lakers haven’t shown much interest recently in Trae Young

The Lakers may not exactly be smitten with the idea of trading for three-time All-Star guard Trae Young.

Five full days have passed since NBA teams were allowed to officially start talking to free agents from other teams, and the Los Angeles Lakers have done nothing to add any outside free agents. So far, their only signings have been Max Christie, a guard who was already on their roster, and 2024 draft picks Bronny James and Dalton Knecht.

The Lakers have watched men such as Klay Thompson and Buddy Hield go off the free agency board, and now DeMar DeRozan, another free agent they have reportedly had interest in, could be headed to the Sacramento Kings.

The only option for L.A. could now be some sort of needle-moving trade. While he’s a polarizing option, Trae Young is a star some fans want the team to trade for.

But according to Zach Lowe, the Lakers haven’t shown much interest in the three-time All-Star guard.

Via ESPN:

“The Lakers, too, have shown little recent interest in Young, sources said,” wrote Lowe. “That could change if the price drops to L.A.’s liking. But the market for Young is as chilly as it has ever been.”

Young averaged 25.7 points and 10.8 assists a game this past season, but he shot just 43% from the field and turned the ball over 4.4 times a contest. In addition, he will make $43 million this coming season, which means his price tag would likely be extremely steep for Los Angeles.

Former Sooner Buddy Hield joining Golden State Warriors

Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball legend Buddy Hield is now a Golden State Warrior.

Former Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball star [autotag]Buddy Hield[/autotag] has found his new team for the 2024-2025 NBA season.

The OU legend will be joining the Golden State Warriors on a sign-and-trade deal with his former team, the Philadelphia 76ers. ESPN NBA analyst Adrian Wojnarowski took to social media on Thursday to announce the news.

Hield’s new contract in the Bay Area is a guaranteed two years and $21 million. He will get $18 million in first two years, a $3 million partial guarantee in the third year and player option on a non-guaranteed fourth year. The Sixers will receive a 2031 second round pick.

“Buddy Love” led the Sooners all the way to the Final Four in 2016, headlining [autotag]Lon Kruger[/autotag]’s best team in Norman. In that storied senior season, Hield averaged 25 points per game on better than 50% shooting. His run in the NCAA Tournament is the lasting image of OU hoops in the 2010s.

Hield was a consensus All-American in 2016, winning the Wooden Award and the Naismith Award. He was also the [autotag]Big 12[/autotag] Player of the Year. He led the Sooners to their fifth and most recent trip to the Final Four. Oklahoma also made the Final Four in 1939, 1947, 1988 and 2002.

Hield is one of the faces of Oklahoma basketball in the modern era, along with recently retired [autotag]Blake Griffin[/autotag] (2007-2009) and Atlanta Hawks star [autotag]Trae Young[/autotag] (2017-2018). He’ll join Golden State as a three-point shooting replacement for Klay Thompson, whom the Warriors lost in free agency earlier this offseason.

Lakers trading for Trae Young would be Russell Westbrook part two

If the Lakers traded for Hawks star Trae Young, it would likely be a repeat of the disaster that was Russell Westbrook’s tenure with them.

Draft day 2024 in the NBA, or at least the first day of the draft, is finally here, and it could be a pivotal day for the Los Angeles Lakers. They will be able to offer up to three first-round draft picks in a potential trade in order to try to land a star or borderline star player.

Several possible targets have been mentioned, and one of the biggest names mentioned has been Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks. He has made the All-Star team three times in his six seasons and has career averages of 25.5 points and 9.5 assists a game.

That would make it seem on the surface that Young, who is only 25 years of age, would be an ideal third star to place alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Those numbers would make it seem like he could also take Los Angeles into the post-James era and ensure a smoother transition toward whatever would come next.

But a slightly closer look tells a different story.

Yes, Young is a legitimate scoring threat who drops dimes as regularly as a leaking Coinstar machine. Yes, he’s a pretty good 3-point shooter, at least for stretches. But overall, he shoots a low percentage from the field, has questionable shot selection, is a questionable decision-maker, turns the ball over a lot and is viewed as a defensive liability.

Sound familiar?

In 2021, the Lakers failed to defend their NBA championship and lost in the first round of the playoffs. Thus, they looked to reload in a big way. They had interest in veteran playmaking wing DeMar DeRozan and sharpshooter Buddy Hield, but they swung a trade for Russell Westbrook instead.

For whatever reason, Westbrook failed to fit in. He had some good moments, but his shot selection and decision-making drew the ire of Lakers fans, as did his defensive deficiencies and poor outside shooting. He also couldn’t find a way to be productive without the basketball.

He quickly became a scapegoat for all that went wrong for the Lakers during the 2021-22 season. Some of it was hyperbolic, but everyone quickly realized that trading for him was a big mistake.

Even worse, the Lakers gave up a lot in that trade to get Westbrook — they jettisoned guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and forward Kyle Kuzma, two key contributors on their 2020 title-winning team. They also parted ways with forward Montrezl Harrell, the 2019-20 Sixth Man of the Year, as well as guard Isaiah Jackson, whom they took with the No. 22 pick in the 2021 draft.

Many have felt that in doing so, L.A. essentially dismantled a championship team and wasted perfectly good assets. The entire city seemed to rejoice when Westbrook, an L.A.-area native, was finally dealt last February for D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt and Malik Beasley. After that deal, the team instantly went from mediocrity to a Western Conference finals appearance.

Young will make $43 million next season (Westbrook made $44.2 million during the 2021-22 campaign), so acquiring him would be extremely expensive for the Purple and Gold, just as acquiring Westbrook was. The team would have to give up multiple good and useful players, as well as plenty of draft capital, and perhaps they would end up giving up more than they did to get Westbrook in 2021.

It would take them all that to get a player who has shot just 43.6% from the field and averaged 4.2 turnovers a game for his career. Oh, and the Hawks’ defensive rating was 3.8 points better without Young than it was with him this season.

If the Lakers end up trading for Young, it would likely torpedo whatever may be remaining of the James era in L.A. It would also handicap their efforts to rebuild and retool once he leaves.

Memo to the Lakers: Don’t do it. Please, just don’t do it.

Report: Lakers are a destination that would appeal to Trae Young

It’s unclear how much the Lakers want to acquire Trae Young, but it looks like he would welcome a trade to the Lakers.

The 2024 NBA Draft is almost here, and many will be paying attention to what the Los Angeles Lakers may or may not do during the draft.

There have been plenty of rumors that the Lakers will at least try to execute a big trade that could catapult them back into championship contention. Many of those rumors have centered around a star or borderline star guard, and Donovan Mitchell, Dejounte Murray, Darius Garland and Collin Sexton are targets that have been mentioned.

Another big potential trade target for Los Angeles is the Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young. According to league sources, the Purple and Gold would be an appealing destination for the three-time All-Star.

Via Yahoo Sports:

“The Hawks, of course, are expected to engage rival teams on trade scenarios for both Trae Young and Dejounte Murray throughout this offseason,” wrote Jake Fischer. “The Lakers, [New Orleans] Pelicans and [San Antonio] Spurs remain three destinations that would be appealing to Young, league sources told Yahoo Sports, and teams in the lottery are not discounting the possibility the Spurs could engineer a move up to the top slot, which could open the door for Atlanta possibly selecting [Donovan] Clingan at No. 4.”

Young seems to be a polarizing prospect among Lakers fans because of his low shooting percentages and high turnover rate. But he is a big-time scoring threat who has a career average of 25.5 points a game, and this season he also dished off 10.8 assists per game.

Several weeks ago, it was reported that internally, the Lakers “could be split” on whether to go after him via trade.

Trae Young’s cryptic social media post after Lakers hired JJ Redick

What did the hourglass emoji that Trae Young posted on social media mean?

Just five days from now, the 2024 NBA Draft will commence. On that day, the Los Angeles Lakers may make their first real attempt to upgrade a roster that is playoff-caliber but not championship-caliber right now.

In terms of assets aside from superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, they have two legitimate starter-level players in D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves, two borderline starters or sixth-man-level players in Rui Hachimura and Jarred Vanderbilt and a potential bench contributor in Gabe Vincent.

The Lakers will also be able to offer up to three first-round draft picks on draft day in order to secure a third star or difference-maker.

One star who has been linked to them is the Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young. Shortly after Los Angeles officially hired JJ Redick to be its head coach on Thursday, Young posted an emoji of an hourglass on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Fans seem divided on whether Young would be the man for the Lakers to pursue.

On one hand, he is a legitimate big-time scoring threat who averaged 10.8 assists a game this season and is relatively quick in the open court. At the same time, he is a high-usage, low-efficiency player who has a career average of 4.2 turnovers a game.

Young also struggles on the defensive end, partly due to his modest stature at 6-foot-1 and 164 pounds.

Whether he would be the right man or not for the Lakers to go after, his price tag is likely going to be very hefty, especially since he will be owed $43 million next season.

Could the Nets be interested in trading for Trae Young?

If Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young is available for trade this offseason, would the Brooklyn Nets be interested in trading for him?

The Brooklyn Nets are at a point of their franchise where they have to find a way to set themselves up for the future, one way or another. How Brooklyn moves forward is the most important question for them this summer and one of their avenues could be trading for a star.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported earlier this month that the Atlanta Hawks could be entering some “very real” trade talks regarding their star point guard in Trae Young after winning the first overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft after the conclusion of the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery. While the Hawks have been trying to find a way to get back to the playoffs, they have shown that they are willing to make major changes to their roster in the process.

Earlier in the 2023-24 season, Atlanta had trade talks with several teams as they were looking to switch up their backcourt by dealing Dejounte Murray. The Hawks were unable to get what they wanted for Murray, the Nets were one of the teams to lose interest in trading for Murray after learning Atlanta’s price point, so it makes sense for them to pivot to Young.

This relates to Brooklyn in the sense that they are in a position to make some moves in the trade market thanks to some of the veterans on the team along with their draft capital. After that, it begs the question of whether the Nets should be interested in Young if he is indeed available for a trade.

Young, 25, is coming off a 2023-24 season in which he averaged 25.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 10.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 43.0% from the field and 37.3% from three-point land in 54 games played. Young has done wonders for Atlanta’s offense since coming to the team in a trade on the day of the 2018 NBA Draft after being taken by the Dallas Mavericks with the fifth overall pick.

Ever since Brooklyn traded Kyrie Irving in the middle of the 2022-23 season, the Nets has been looking for their point guard of the future. Young could be that if Brooklyn decides to shake things up in a major way this offseason.
