Virginia’s Ben James earns PGA Tour exemption with win at Valero Texas Collegiate

The win is the sixth of James’ college career.

It has been a stellar start to the season for Virginia.

First, the Cavaliers picked up a season-opening win at the Inverness Intercollegiate, topping defending national champion Auburn by four shots.

Then on Monday, junior Ben James picked up his first win of the season at the Valero Texas Collegiate, and it was a significant one. James, the 2023 Phil Mickelson Award winner, topped Auburn’s Josiah Gilbert in a playoff to nab medalist honors at TPC San Antonio’s Oak’s Course. The victory earned him an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Valero Texas Open, slated for next April at the same venue.

James shot 6-under 66 in the final round, making birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff with Gilbert. He then made birdie on the first extra hole to win, the sixth victory of his collegiate career.

After a five-win freshman season, James wasn’t able to win during what some would call a “sophomore slump.” Still, after two tournaments to begin his junior season, he has lost to only two golfers and earned a professional exemption thanks to his play. He’s also making an early statement for the Haskins Award.

On the team side of things, Virginia tied for third with Auburn, but it was Oklahoma taking the team title at 30 under, topping Ole Miss by six shots for the title.

The Sooners won for the 45th time under coach Ryan Hybl. The victory came in large part to junior Jase Summy’s school-record 10-under 62 in the opening round. He finished the week 11 under and solo third while senior Drew Goodman tied for eighth.

Watch: Jordan Spieth hit into a drain and then a gutter on the clubhouse roof at the Valero Texas Open

What a journey for Spieth.

SAN ANTONIO — For as much nervous energy as Jordan Spieth often appears to play with, he seems to have a calm about him as he saunters around the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course, a track record of success at the Valero Texas Open firmly in his back pocket.

Spieth won here in 2021, his second-most recent victory behind his 2022 RBC Heritage win, and he also has three top-10 finishes in the event.

But the final hole of Spieth’s third round on Saturday not only had the Texas legend displaying his normal jitters, it also gave him a tour of the course he may not have previously taken.

After pulling his drive left through the fairway on the 618-yard par 5, Spieth’s second shot ended up near a drainage ditch in an area few have found themselves.

But rather than take the conventional route back into the fairway, the former University of Texas star displayed the creativity that only he can, taking a full swing in the wrong direction. The ball ended up in the gutter atop the TPC San Antonio clubhouse, affording Spieth a drop that would give him a chance to salvage par.

Unfortunately for him, after putting the ball onto the front of the green, Spieth three-putted for the day’s only double-bogey on the 18th hole.

He finished the day at even par 72 and heads into the final round at 3 under.

2024 Valero Texas Open Saturday tee times, PGA Tour pairings and how to watch

The purse at the Valero is $9.2 million with $1.656 million going to the winner.

After 36 holes of the Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio in Texas, Akshay Bhatia holds a five-shot lead at 11 under after a second-round 2-under 70, a solid follow-up to his 63 on Thursday.

Brendon Todd, Russell Henley and Denny McCarthy are tied for second at 6 under, while Rory McIlroy is alone in fifth at 5 under.

Bhatia, who’s finished T-17 and T-11 in two starts since missing the cut at the Players Championship, has one PGA Tour win on his resume, the 2023 Barracuda Championship.

The purse at the Valero is $9.2 million with $1.656 million going to the winner. The winner will also receive 500 FedEx Cup points.

Watch: Jimmy Walker snaps putter with Rory McIlroy, Smylie Kaufman on the call – and their reaction was priceless

This was too good.

Jimmy Walker hit a nice third shot into the par-5 eighth at TPC San Antonio during the second round of the Valero Texas Open on Friday and left himself a seven-foot birdie putt.

When Golf Channel panned to Walker to show his attempt, Smylie Kaufman was hosting his ‘Happy Hour’ segment with Rory McIlroy in the guest chair. Walker took the putter back, made his stroke and was disappointed when his ball failed to fall right at the cup, leaving him a three-foot par putt behind the hole.

But then he did something Kaufman and McIlroy weren’t expecting.

After taking a step towards his ball, Walker snapped the putter head right off the shaft.

“We’ve all been there,” McIlroy said.

“I must say, of things I expected to happen just then, I don’t think I expected the club to snap in half,” Kaufman responded.

“I didn’t think Jimmy was that strong,” McIlroy joked.

Walker was 2-over after nine holes Friday, 4 over total.

2024 Valero Texas Open Friday tee times, PGA Tour pairings and how to watch

The purse at the Valero is $9.2 million with $1.656 million going to the winner.

On a windy Thursday in San Antonio, Akshay Bhatia got hot, going out in 32 and coming home in 31 to post a first-round 63, good for a three-shot lead after 18 holes at the 2024 Valero Texas Open.

This is the final PGA Tour stop before the Masters, the final chance for those not already in the field at Augusta National Golf Club to punch their ticket. Bhatia is among those not yet qualified, so a win this week would come with a nice addition prize.

There are two golfers three back in a tie for second at 6 under, Justin Lower and Brendon Todd. Lower shot a 66 and held the lead after the morning wave. Todd started on the 10th hole and closed with four birdies on his last five holes.

Jordan Spieth, meanwhile, managed just a 1-over 73 but had the highlight of the day with an ace on the 16th hole.

The purse at the Valero is $9.2 million with $1.656 million going to the winner. The winner will also receive 500 FedEx Cup points.

Watch: The always exciting Jordan Spieth made an ace at the Valero Texas Open

What a crowd reaction.

To say it was a rough day for Jordan Spieth may be an understatement.

The winner of the 2021 Valero Texas Open was 4 over when he stepped on the 15th tee, not a welcome sign after consecutive missed cuts in an event you’d like to see some signs of life heading into the Masters.

Well, one shot can certainly turn a round around. And Spieth is plenty capable of hitting that one shot.

On the par-3 16th hole at TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course, Spieth pulled a 7-iron from 199 yards. He smashed it and started walking to the green after a solid swing. The ball hopped a couple times and never left the flag.

Boom. An ace.

What a crowd reaction.

For Spieth, it’s the fourth ace of his Tour career and first since the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational. He followed with a birdie on the 17th hole and is still very much alive to make the weekend.

In final Masters tune-up, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth highlight field at 2024 Valero Texas Open

One final chance for someone to punch their Masters ticket.

With one event left before the first men’s major championship of the year, plenty of players are making the trek to San Antonio, Texas, to get their final preparations in or try to get in the field at Augusta National.

The field was announced Friday for the 2024 Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course, and the biggest name is World No. 2 Rory McIlroy. While No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is getting his tune-up in this week in Houston, McIlroy will do so next week in the heart of the Lone Star State.

Also in the field in San Antonio are 2021 winner Jordan Spieth, Brian Harman, Hideki Matsuyama, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg. Corey Conners is the defending champion. Both of his PGA Tour victories have come at the Valero Texas Open.

TPC San Antonio is a par-72 layout measuring 7,438 yards.

Here’s a look at the full field for the final event before the Masters, the Valero Texas Open:
