Texas training staff was key in injury prevention this offseason

Torre Becton and company kept Texas largely injury-free this offseason according to Steve Sarkisian.

Texas exited camp without any significant injuries. According to head coach Steve Sarkisian, the training staff played a huge role in the team’s injury prevention. There’s a great chance that he’s right.

I have been critical of Becton’s initial strength and conditioning program in 2021, but the results in the way of injury prevention are undeniable. Becton has helped facilitate strong-jointed players who have thrived on the field.

Strength and conditioning programs can often do more harm than good. Albeit unlike many training programs, Becton’s program is keeping players fresh and healthy. It’s worth acknowledging as the team approaches the season.

Texas enters the season at full strength in a year where it could afford to suffer an injury or two. In doing so, Becton and company are maximizing the impact that the Longhorns’ depth can make in 2023. They will look to continue close to full strength when the season kicks off on Sept. 2.

Texas players are back on campus for the start of summer workouts. The Longhorns are gearing up for an important year three under Steve Sarkisian.

The expectation is for Texas to compete for a Big 12 title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. Steve Sarkisian has assembled a roster full of NFL talent and quality depth. The Texas staff has the next few months leading up to the season to mold them into a championship-caliber team.

Strength and conditioning coach Torre Becton has a couple of months to get the team into playing shape before turning the players over to the rest of the staff for fall camp.

Texas has some new faces to work with, as 11 members of the 2023 signing class have made it to campus to start their college careers.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers and the Longhorns are seen here on the first day of summer workouts.

WATCH: Texas freshmen discuss winter workouts, praise Torre Becton

Arch Manning, Anthony Hill, Cedric Baxter and others discuss their transition to the college level.

The Texas football social media account released a short video of the freshmen faces on campus discussing their transition to college and experiencing the winter workout program.

Torre Becton, Texas’ strength and conditioning coach, received high praise from several of the early enrollees. Former five-star quarterback Arch Manning specifically mentioned the physical progress he’s noticed since arriving in Austin.

Graduating early, it’s definitely been a great head start for me. Coach Becton and his staff have been very helpful. I’ve gotten bigger, faster, and stronger. He’s going to push you, and he wants what’s best for you. He asks you the first day you’re here, what do you want to do and what are your goals? He’s going to help you get there. That’s his job. He’s the best.

WATCH: Torre Becton implements ‘All Gas no Brakes’ culture during workout

There’s a new culture in Austin and success starts in the offseason.

The Longhorns are in dire need of a hot start in the upcoming 2021 season, especially given the fact 247Sports declared Texas as having the ninth toughest schedule in the nation.

One slip-up can change the trajectory of the whole season and starting off with what could be back-to-back trap games will be an indicator of where the program stands. The Longhorns take on a very well coached and deep Louisiana team, and follow that up with a matchup against SEC school  Arkansas, who had shown improvements under Sam Pittman.

A change of culture was needed after the Tom Herman era displayed constant disappointment and looked as if the program had never felt success. Steve Sarkisian had just the guy that would be able to implement his desired culture that emphasizes improvement and simply just having a swagger that shows the program fears none, in Torre Becton.

Becton can be heard emphasizing that nothing they have done in the past matters, because the program is all about moving forward. Something that Longhorn fans are hoping happens, as the team has fallen short of expectations for the past four years.

Texas needs Sarkisian and staff to get the program to a point where the whole world can tell they are back, rather than having to say it.

WATCH: Strength coach Torre Becton pushes the Longhorns to excel

Up close view of one of Torre Becton’s grueling workouts that will help the Longhorns thrive this season.

There is a change of culture in Austin and that starts from the bottom up.

Last season and even years prior, the amount of “stingers” players suffered and infinite times of players looking outmatched strength wise against opponents was utterly embarrassing.

Steve Sarkisian is bringing in a culture that focuses on attention to detail regardless of whether it is a walk through or in a lifting session.

The hiring of Torre Becton as the strength and conditioning coach is one that will set the tone of attention to detail across the program.

Take a look at one of their most recent workouts.

It is evident that even in this short time, there has been a physical and mental transformation across the program, and that is something that will help in taking the Longhorns to the next step.
