Observations from Monday’s ‘Detroit Lions Training Camp LIVE’

On Monday, the Detroit Lions put pads on for the field time in 2020 training camp and broadcast a portion of practice via the team’s “Training Camp LIVE” show.

If you missed the show, here are our observations from the broadcast (or you can skip to the end for the full video).

The Lions set up a makeshift outdoor studio in front of the Lions practice fields and for the first half-hour — while the team went through stretches — the team’s multi-media journalist Tori Petry and senior writer Tim Twentyman previewed what has been happening in camp so far and some of the interesting storylines in this years camp.

There were some behind the scenes clips from the previous week when the team was transitioning between Phase 1 and Phase 2’s non-padded practices. Including having offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell mic’d up during one of the indoor practices.

After the clip, the broadcast swapped out Twentyman for former Lions left tackle Lomas Brown. Fro the next half-hour, Petry and Brown discussed the focus of this week’s episode: quarterbacks and running backs.

Petry and Brown would discuss the two position groups in a similar way they approach their weekly Lions’ podcast, all while moving between clips of the on-field action.

The majority of the time, the camera’s featured tight shots of players, but they did shift out to a wide camera angle when specific position drills picked up. The constant shifting of camera angles made it difficult to compare players in drills but there were some cool looks you don’t get while attending camp during a typical practice.

This was the first of six broadcasts the Lions will put on during this year’s training camp with the next episode coming on Friday when they will shift the focus to the offensive line.

Mike O’Hara says the Lions have legitimate interest in drafting a QB

Will the Detroit Lions consider selecting a quarterback in the upcoming NFL draft? Lions reporter Mike O’Hara believes they absolutely could.

Detroit Lions in-house multi-media reporter, Tori Petry met with Lions writer, Mike O’Hara at the NFL Combine to discuss the options that the Lions have in the upcoming draft, and if the team is interested in drafting a quarterback.

“Absolutely,” O’Hara said, “they have it for a lot of reasons, maybe not at the number three spot, but maybe a trade down into the later rounds, I could see as high as second round, third, fourth, or fifth. They’ve got to fill out the depth at that position, we saw that last year in the final eight games after Matthew Stafford went out. If you’re not ready at that position, you have no chance of winning in the National Football League, and clearly they have more to do.”

Of course, general manager Bob Quinn has been very adamant about the Lions having absolutely no trade talks regarding Matthew Stafford. O’Hara believes the same remains true saying, “I don’t think they are actively shopping [Matthew] Stafford, they don’t have to. With who is going to be on the board, teams are going to come to them. A deal will make itself if the Lions are interested in trading down.”

O’Hara speaks about the possibility of Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa going third overall in the draft saying, “this is a special player, a special athlete, and he brings an awful lot to you.” Of course, going down with the hip injury late in the season, Tagovailoa comes with some extra baggage, although Ian Rapoport has reported that Tagovailoa’s hip has received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

You can hear the extent of Petry and O’Hara’s conversation in the video below.

Bob Quinn anticipating more roster moves over the next few weeks

Over the last 72 hours, the Detroit Lions have been connected to a few roster moves, but more moves are expected to happen over the next few weeks.

So far this offseason, it’s been relatively quiet in Allen Park when it comes to negotiating with players on expired contracts. But over the last 72 hours, we’ve started to see some movement.

On Thursday, it was reported that Damon Harrison and the Lions will mutually part ways, as it was announced that Harrison would not be back, and yesterday, it was reported that the Lions would be re-signing WR Danny Amendola to a one-year deal.

The Lions have yet to announce either move, but the players and their agents have confirmed these decisions.

As it stands right now, the Lions have 66 players on their roster, but over the next two months — after free agency and the draft — the roster will contain 90 players entering Spring mini-camp.

“We are talking to a lot of agents of our current guys, but I think there’s a little bit of a stall because of the uncertainty of the CBA,” Lions general manager Bob Quinn replied to Tori Petry when asked about contract negotiations with players that are about to hit free agency. “With a new CBA, a lot of things can change in terms of how you can structure things.”

Quinn assured the Lions fans that while the franchise may seem quiet, that is certainly not the case behind the scenes, saying “we are having a lot of good conversations, but nothing has really passed the finish line yet, but we are hoping to get a few things done in the next week or so.”

As par for the course, there is as a level of uncertainty when it comes to negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement as owners and players must both agree to terms. Devon Kennard is the player rep for the Detroit Lions and recently spoke about wanting more discussion.

To watch Quinn answer directly about contractual negotiations, start the video below at the 3:22 mark.

Bob Quinn, again, confirms Matthew Stafford trade rumors are 100% false

In an interview with Detroit Lions reporter Tori Petry, general manager Bob Quinn, once again, confirms Matthew Stafford trade rumors are 100% false.

Ahead of the upcoming NFL Combine, Detroit Lions general manager, Bob Quinn sat down with the Lions in-house multi-media reporter Tori Petry and among other topics, discussed the trade rumors surrounding the organization’s franchise quarterback, Matthew Stafford.

Somehow, somewhere, someone speculated that the Lions were looking at trading away the best quarterback that has ever donned the Honolulu Blue and Silver, adding fuel to the fire in Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft with the Lions taking Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Quinn has denied the rumors from the onset, and during his interview with Petry, he seemed to have put his final stamp on those rumors saying, “He’s here. He’s our quarterback. And all those rumors, not sure exactly where they came from, but like I said before, they’re 100% false.”

At the 1:36 mark of the video you can watch Quinn deny– for hopefully, the last time– the Stafford trade rumors.
