WATCH: New Ohio State basketball assistant Tony Skinn discusses what he brings

Watch the first remarks from new OSU assistant Tony Skinn. Hear why he wanted the Ohio State job.

It was a bit surprising when news broke that Chris Holtmann and the Ohio State basketball team lost long-time assistant Terry Johnson to Matt Painter and Purdue. It left a big hole on the coaching staff with plenty of interest from the outside.

Holtmann tapped into Ohio roots in hiring Jake Diebler for one spot on the coaching staff, but this time he went from outside the program and the state when he tapped Tony Skinn to come to the banks of the Olentangy. Skinn comes from the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) area and played his college ball for George Mason before heading overseas for his professional career.

Skinn has a very solid reputation across the college game, and hiring him will bring an outside perspective and unique outlook on things that could result in a new set of data points and schematics.

With all of that in mind, Skinn had his first media availability today when he took some time to field questions and provide a little background to who and what he is as a person and a coach. If you missed any of his comments, we’re repurposing the presser and remarks for you.

Ohio State officially announces addition of Tony Skinn

Chris Holtmann and the Ohio State basketball program officially announced the addition of Tony Skinn as an assistant coach Thursday.

The reports were already out there, but now we have official word from Ohio State that the basketball program has hired Tony Skinn as its third assistant coach. The vacancy came when former assistant Terry Johnson left the program to become an assistant at Purdue under Matt Painter.

“We are really excited about the addition of Tony Skinn as an assistant coach,” head coach Chris Holtmann said. “Tony comes highly recommended from every level – NBA, college, AAU and high school. Tony was an outstanding player on a Final Four team, and as a professional. He has developed a reputation in his coaching career as being a tremendous worker, he’s detailed oriented, builds excellent relationships with players and is an outstanding recruiter. He has strong ties in the DC Metro area and has worked with some highly successful high school, AAU and college programs. We can’t wait for him to get started. A big welcome to Tony, Weyni, Isaiah, Liam and Noelle to our program and The Ohio State University.”

For Skinn’s part, he seemed excited and grateful for the chance to be a part of the OSU program.

“The opportunity to come to a program like Ohio State is very unique, and I’m grateful that Coach Holtmann has given me this opportunity,” said Skinn. “As a fan of basketball, the Ohio State brand is second to none and I’m excited to get to work. This is a very good team and program, and I hope with the experiences that I had as a player and now as a coach, that I can make a big impact. I’m not too far removed from the process of being a player. I know the culture and the mentality of the day-to-day grind, and I can put myself in their shoes and help them become a better basketball player.”

Skinn has been with Seton Hall as an assistant developing some good guards. He also was a part of the George Mason Final Four squad from 2006 and played professionally overseas.

Holtmann said there was significant interest when the position became available, and from all indications, OSU got a good one with the hire of Skinn.

Ohio State basketball hires Tony Skinn to fill assistant role

According to reports, Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann will be tapping Seton Hall assistant Tony Skinn to fill the assistant coach vacancy.

The Ohio State basketball team will be hiring Tony Skinn as its third assistant according to news first reported by Jerry Carino of the Asbury Park Press and Gannett New Jersey.

Skinn, 38, has been with Seton Hall under head coach Kevin Willard for the past three seasons. He played his college basketball at George Mason from 2003 to 2006 after transferring from Blinn College. You may remember him as a key member of the surprising Final Four squad from 2006.

His college coaching background started at Louisiana Tech from 2015 to 2018 as an assistant before joining the Seton Hall staff. Skinn will join Jake Diebler and Ryan Pedon as assistant coaches. He fills the position left when Chris Holtmann’s assistant Terry Johnson left to become an assistant under Matt Painter at Purdue.

As we get any official word or statements from Ohio State, we’ll have it for you.
