UNC secondary continues with inconsistent play despite win over Florida A&M

The UNC football secondary continued its inconsistent play from a year ago on Saturday and despite the win over Florida A&M, has to improve.

The UNC football program got its 2022 season off on the right note with a 56-24 win over Florida A&M on Saturday night, but it didn’t come without any concern.

Coming into the season, the UNC secondary was a question mark. Not due to the talent level, but due to the injury concerns and the inconsistent play that has plagued that unit for much of the past few years.

Add on top of that a new defensive coordinator and a new defensive backs coach. On Saturday, it definitely showed.

Florida A&M’s quarterback Jeremy Moussa threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns. While the Tar Heels’ secondary did pick off Moussa once, it also gave up a 73.7 completion rate.

While one of the touchdowns from Moussa came on a wheel route to running back AJ Davis — defended by linebacker [autotag]Chris Collins[/autotag] — the other came against defensive back [autotag]Dontae Balfour[/autotag]. It was a 22-yard strike where wideout Trevonte Davis got behind Balfour and Moussa placed a perfect ball.

The Tar Heels finished with three sacks, but overall the defensive pressure wasn’t there much of the night. It was a problem the Tar Heels struggled with last season and thus, contributed to the inconsistent play of the secondary. That and a lack of consistent tackling was something that stood out to UNC head coach Mack Brown.

“We didn’t tackle well early, which is usually the case in your opening ballgame because you have trouble tackling a lot in preseason,” Brown said postgame. “… they were 3-for-3 (in the redzone for touchdowns). So we’ve got to do a better job defensively in the red zone situations.”

Part of the lackluster effort could’ve been contributed to the early exit of talented junior cornerback [autotag]Tony Grimes[/autotag]. Grimes left early in the game with an ‘upper body’ injury and didn’t return.

Balfour led the defensive backs with six tackles while [autotag]Storm Duck[/autotag] had the lone interception on the night. Sophomore [autotag]DeAndre Boykins[/autotag] flashed his potential with four tackles and a fumble recovery.

Overall, regardless of the moving pieces, the secondary definitely delivered a lackluster performance. Moving forward it’s something that needs to be cleaned up and should.

“If you look at it, Storm Duck hadn’t played in a long time. Dontae Balfour hadn’t played. So there are a lot of guys out there that hadn’t played,” Brown said. “Noah Taylor we’d never seen. So three sacks is good. We expect more. And I do think that we’ve got some work to do. But defensive staffs never had a game together. Coaches that hadn’t called defenses for five years. So I will I think we’ll all see a tremendous amount of improvement in a short time. Because I knew they weren’t very happy there in that late second quarter either.”

North Carolina gets another crack to take a step forward with its defensive performance next weekend against a talented Appalachian State team on the road.

UNC loses starting DB Tony Grimes early in Week 0

UNC football defensive back Tony Grimes will miss the rest of Saturday’s game against Florida A&M with an upper body injury.

As North Carolina’s offense is off to a fast start with two touchdowns in three possessions, the defense is struggling a bit. And early on they lost a key player in their secondary.

Starting defensive back [autotag]Tony Grimes[/autotag] had to leave Saturday’s game early suffering what appears to be a head injury. Grimes went in to make a tackle early in the first quarter and stayed on the ground after. He then went back to the locker room to be evaluated.

Per multiple reports, Grimes has been ruled out for the rest of the game with an upper-body which is a tough loss for UNC’s defense:

Dontae Balfour has taken over for Grimes in the game as Storm Duck is the other starting defensive back. This is something to monitor moving forward not only for this game but for next week with a trip to Appalachian State ahead.

UNC defensive keys to the game against Florida A&M

A look at the defensive keys to the game for UNC football when it takes on Florida A&M in its season opener on Saturday.

The UNC football program gets its 2022 season underway on Saturday as it welcomes Florida A&M into Kenan Stadium.

After a 2021 season that failed to meet expectations, 2022 rolls around with a different level of expectations.

While the offensive unit has a lot of new faces and new roles for returning players, the defensive unit returns a lot of experienced players looking to bounce back from a 2021 season un which that unit struggled.

Gene Chizik and Charlton Warren come to Chapel Hill as the new faces of the defense and both look to improve a defensive unit that did not play up to its potential last season.

Watch and stream the game live on ESPN+

UNC dropped from 68th to 99th overall in defensive efficiency in the last three years under former coordinator Jay Bateman, so formulating a defensive unit that can be effective and live up to its potential will be key.

So, here are the keys on the defensive end for UNC’s game against Florida A&M.

Tony Grimes ready to see secondary make more plays in 2022

UNC football defensive back Tony Grimes is hoping the Tar Heels’ secondary can make more spectacular plays.

While North Carolina has some questions going into this 2022 season, the Tar Heels’ secondary will be in the spotlight on the defensive side of the ball.

UNC returns a few key players and among them is defensive back [autotag]Tony Grimes[/autotag] who is going into year three after enrolling early as a five-star recruit a few years back. Grimes is ready to hold down his side of the field and is hoping for a bounce-back season here in 2022, however, he does want to see one thing change here for the upcoming campaign.

Spectacular plays.

Grimes told the media on Wednesday that he is expecting more big plays from the secondary, as Tar Heels Illustrated notes:

“I’m excited, I’m really excited,” Grimes said via THI. “We’re definitely doing a lot of stuff from last year. More big plays from the secondary this year, so I’m definitely excited to see what we’re going to put on tape.”

The Tar Heels secondary will be headlined by Grimes, Dontae Balfour, and Storm Duck. It’s a talented secondary that has promise but they do need a bounce-back campaign.

And that can get started here with a good performance in Week 0 against Florida A&M.

Two Tar Heels crack ESPN’s Top 100 list for 2022 college football season

UNC football wide receiver Josh Downs and defensive back Tony Grimes earn recognition from ESPN ahead of the 2022 season.

The UNC football program enters the 2022 season with a lot of question marks following a disappointing 2021 campaign. It’s safe to say that there are questions about the roster and even the talent in some areas.

But even with that, UNC does have some playmakers on this roster on both sides of the ball.

Ahead of the 2022 campaign, ESPN released their annual list of the Top 100 players in college football. This year, two Tar Heels made the list and for one player, it’s his first time on the list.

Wide receiver [autotag]Josh Downs[/autotag] checked in at No. 26 on the list after being unranked a year ago. Downs is coming off a record-setting 2021 campaign and is expected to be the lead man in UNC’s offense again this season:

For the bulk of the 2021 season, every defense the Tar Heels played knew where the ball was going. Downs was not just the No. 1 target, but often the only reliable pass catcher. And even with all that attention from defenders, he still caught 101 balls for 1,335 yards. While UNC will have a new QB for 2022, it also expects to have a better supporting cast for its star receiver, which could make Downs an even bigger weapon this year.

While Downs represented the offense, his teammate [autotag]Tony Grimes[/autotag] checked in at No. 72 overall, up 8 spots from last year’s ranking of No. 80.

Grimes is going into his third season after enrolling early at UNC as a five-star prospect:

Grimes was supposed to still be in high school when he first stepped onto the field for North Carolina in 2020. After reclassifying during the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down high school football in his home state of Virginia, Grimes quickly developed into one of the ACC’s most gifted corners as a true freshman. The 2021 season saw some regression — no TDs allowed in 2020, four in 2021 — but he still held opposing QBs to less than 50% completions while breaking up nine passes.

The duo are the only UNC players on the list this season as they had two last year as well.

UNC will kickoff their 2022 season on August 27th, as they host Florida A&M in Kenan Memorial Stadium.

Tony Grimes named a breakout cornerback ahead of 2022 season

UNC football defensive back Tony Grimes was named a breakout cornerback ahead of the 2022 season by Pro Football Focus.

UNC football defensive back [autotag]Tony Grimes[/autotag] enters his third season in Chapel Hill, one with high expectations for the former five-star prospect.

Grimes, who reclassified up a year and played right away as a true freshman for UNC, is coming off of an All-ACC Honorable Mention sophomore season. He tied for fifth in the conference with nine pass breakups.

Now, he’s named a breakout candidate ahead of the 2022 season, per Pro Football Focus.

“Grimes is a 2022 breakout candidate who has a sky-high ceiling. The former five-star recruit has been volatile in two years in Chapel Hill. In 2021, Grimes allowed 15 yards or less in eight of 13 games, but he surrendered 60 or more yards in the other five outings. He was also called for nine penalties on the season.”

Grimes, a breakout candidate, is also ranked the No. 24 cornerback in college football heading into the season.

He has totaled 61 tackles, 13 pass breakups and one interception in his two seasons at UNC.

Grimes was also named a fourth-team All-ACC defender on the Athlon preseason All-ACC teams.

After two successful seasons for Grimes, not only are the expectations high on the inside of the locker room but also from a national perspective.

Josh Downs headlines Athlon Sports’ All-ACC Preseason team

UNC football wide receiver Josh Downs headlines one of ten selections to the Athlon Sports All-ACC preseason team.

The UNC football program has landed ten players on Athlon Sports’ All-ACC preseason team for the 2022 season.

The publication released their annual preseason team for the conference, and headlining it for the Tar Heels is junior [autotag]Josh Downs[/autotag]. The wide receiver was one of four UNC players on the list but the only to make the first team in the selections.

Downs had a breakout year in 2021, catching 101 passes for 1,335 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging 13.2 yards per catch. He was Sam Howell’s go-to guy in UNC’s offense and that should be the case going into this season but with a different quarterback at the helm.

Joining Downs on the team are DL [autotag]Myles Murphy[/autotag] (second team), RB [autotag]British Brooks[/autotag] (fourth team), OL [autotag]Asim Richards[/autotag] (fourth team), DL [autotag]Ray Vohasek[/autotag] (fourth team), LB [autotag]Noah Taylor[/autotag] (fourth team), LB [autotag]Cedric Gray[/autotag] (fourth team), DB [autotag]Tony Grimes[/autotag] (fourth team), S [autotag]Cam’Ron Kelly[/autotag] (fourth team), punt returner Josh Downs (fourth team).

Let’s hope there are more on this list at season’s end and they appear on the first team.

This UNC DB named a player to watch for early 2023 NFL draft rankings

UNC football defensive back Tony Grimes is a player that this draft analyst is watching in his very early 2023 NFL draft scouting.

The UNC football program had four players drafted in the 2022 NFL draft a few weeks ago and as teams go into rookie minicamps, draft analysts are looking ahead to 2023 already.

For the Tar Heels, they will have some interesting prospects to follow this season both on offense and defense. Among those prospects to watch is defensive back [autotag]Tony Grimes[/autotag]. The early-enrollee has had a solid career at UNC so far and he’s a player that Pro Football Focus’ draft analyst Mike Renner is keeping an eye on this Summer and into the Fall in terms of evaluations for prospects.

Renner listed Grimes in his latest article for PFF:

Grimes was the former No. 1 cornerback recruit before he reclassified because of the coronavirus and came to North Carolina early. In his two seasons for the Tar Heels, he’s allowed only 40 catches on 80 targets for 524 yards.

Grimes has flashed his potential a few times at UNC but he’s also had his struggles too. He was just 18 when he arrived and earned early playing time for the Tar Heels a few seasons ago.

Now, he enters a big junior season where he has the chance to be one of the top defensive backs in next year’s draft class.

Two Tar Heels land in first round of first ESPN NFL mock draft

UNC football players Tony Grimes and Josh Downs were named as first-round picks in this early 2023 mock draft by Todd McShay.

The NFL offseason has shifted to rookie minicamps beginning last week and before we know it. training camp will be here in July. While the 2022 NFL draft was completed but it’s never too early to look ahead to 2023.

And yes, the first mock drafts are already out.

ESPN’s Todd McShay wasted no time releasing his first mock draft for the 2023 cycle, putting out all 32 first-round picks. Among the 32 picks in that first round, McShay has two Tar Heels listed just a year after not having a first rounder selected.

McShay has UNC defensive back [autotag]Tony Grimes[/autotag] going No. 28 overall to the Detroit Lions with a pick they have from Los Angeles in the Matthew Stafford trade:

Grimes has 6-foot-1 size and good speed, and he broke up seven passes last season. A duo of Grimes and Jeff Okudah should help turn things around for Detroit’s lackluster pass defense.

It doesn’t take long to find the other UNC player either.

At No. 31 overall, McShay as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers taking wide receiver [autotag]Josh Downs[/autotag]:

Downs is an explosive route runner who caught 101 passes for 1,335 yards last season and excelled after the catch. He’d be dangerous in Tampa Bay’s offense. Also keep an eye on the QB situation here; the Buccaneers could potentially turn to Kyle Trask or sign a free agent if Tom Brady retires after the 2022 season, but they could also focus on the draft class for a replacement.

That could be an ideal landing spot for Downs as he would be able to come in and learn from Chris Godwin and Mike Evans right away. He could also be playing with Tom Brady if he decides to return for another year.

Obviously, there is a long ways to go and a full season ahead, so both players could improve their stock or potentially hurt it.
