Jake Paul to face Hasim Rahman Jr. after Tommy Fury drops out

Jake Paul will fight Hasim Rahman Jr. as a replacement for Tommy Fury on Aug. 6 in New York.

Now it’s Jake Paul vs. Hasim Rahman Jr. on Aug. 6.

Paul, the YouTuber-turned-boxer, lost opponent Tommy Fury this week because the Briton couldn’t get into the United States. Instead, Paul will face the son of the former heavyweight in a 200-pound bout at Madison Square Garden, Paul told ESPN.

Rahman (12-1, 6 KOs) will be the most-experienced boxer Paul (5-0, 4 KOs) will have faced. Rahman has been fighting as a heavyweight.

Paul believes he faces a tougher challenge against Rahman than he would’ve against Fury, the half brother of heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Some have criticized Paul’s opposition.

“I’m literally crazy,” Paul told ESPN. “There’s no reason why I should be taking this fight. … I want to prove to the boxing world that I’m a real dog, which I am. And I’m gonna go in there against this 12-1 kid who is bigger than Tommy Fury, faster than Tommy Fury, all of these things.

“And I’m gonna put on the performance of a lifetime and just shut everyone up.”

Paul’s partner in his promotional firm, Nakisa Bidarian, reportedly advised his client not to fight Rahman.

“I don’t see the benefit of doing the fight at this stage, given all the other opportunities that are there for Jake,” Bidarian said. “He can prove himself against a 6-0 boxer or a 5-0 boxer, someone who is just there to build their record to lose to someone like Jake. That’s not what he wanted; he wanted to truly challenge himself.

“Him and his coaching team believe that they can beat Hasim Rahman Jr. They believe they can finish Hasim Rahman Jr.”

Rahman’s father, Hasim Rahman Sr., is best known for knocking out Lennix Lewis to win the heavyweight championship in 2001. He was stopped by Lewis in an immediate rematch.

The younger Rahman, who is 31, turned pro in 2017. He suffered his lone loss in April, a fifth-round knockout against unbeaten James McKenzie Morrison.

Jake Paul announces Tommy Fury fight off for second time, teases new opponent for Aug. 6

Jake Paul is moving on from Tommy Fury once again.

An Aug. 6 boxing match between Paul and Fury at famed Madison Square Garden had been on the books since late June, but Paul revealed Wednesday on Twitter that a new opponent soon will be announced.

Paul was highly critical of Fury for pulling out of the fight.

Fury’s received a termination notice. MVP did everything it could 2 help him & team. He wasn’t interested & he literally went into hiding.

2nd time in a row he has pulled out.

2nd time in a row I’m going to step up & take on a new opponent on short notice. AUG 6. MSG.

Paul didn’t mention who he’d be fighting Aug. 6, but Sports Illustrated reports that he’s finalizing a deal to take on Hasim Rahman Jr., the son of former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman.

Rahman Jr. is 31 years old with a 12-1 professional record. Paul, 25, is 5-0 with three of his wins over former MMA champions Tyron Woodley (twice) and Ben Askren.

Fury’s withdrawal comes in the wake of recently being denied entry into the U.S. Last week, Fury was held up at Heathrow Airport in London as he tried to depart for New York to attend a press conference with Paul. However, he was denied due to his family’s ties with Irish crime boss Daniel Kinahan, who is wanted by the U.S. government.

Fury said he was taken aback after the incident transpired.

“I can stand here, and I say I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong, and I have no clue why I’m not allowed to travel to the USA,” Fury said.

This marks Fury’s second time withdrawing from a fight with Paul after he pulled out of their scheduled meeting last December. Woodley replaced Fury on just two weeks’ notice and was knocked out in the rematch with Paul.

Tommy Fury: Denial of entry into U.S. a ‘massive shock’

Tommy Fury: Denial of entry into the U.S. was a “massive shock.”

Editor’s note: This article was originally published at MMAJunkie.com.

Tommy Fury is in disbelief over the recent troubles he’s experienced trying to get to the U.S.

Fury, the half-brother of heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, was denied entry to the U.S. on Tuesday as he tried to fly out from London to attend a Wednesday press conference to promote his upcoming fight with Jake Paul. Homeland security told Fury he wasn’t allowed to travel. A report by TMZ indicates it’s due to his family’s ties with Irish crime boss Daniel Kinahan, who is wanted by the U.S. government.

Shortly after the incident, Fury went on Instagram to give his side of the story.

“I wanted to come on here and set the record straight before anybody else tries to,” Fury explained. “Me and my team this morning arrived at Heathrow Airport ready for the press conference, ready to fly out, and as soon as I entered the airport, I got pulled to one side, and I was told by the Homeland Security officer that was there that my ESTA had been denied, and I wasn’t able to travel to the USA for a reason that I apparently know.

“I can stand here, and I say I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong, and I have no clue why I’m not allowed to travel to the USA.

“I’ve been training for the fight and like I said, that’s all I’ve been doing. I have no clue why they didn’t allow me to travel today, and neither any of my team nor my lawyers. So now I’m having to go to the embassies and all this sort of stuff trying to resolve it, and I’m in the middle of training. I don’t know why this has happened today. It’s a massive shock to me and my whole team. Obviously, it’s a matter that needs to be resolved. These government issues are a lot bigger than the fight right now, and I’m just trying to get it sorted.”

Fury wasn’t the only one who reacted to the news. His opponent, Paul, also had a few things to say as he took to Twitter to blast Fury and accused him of trying to back out of the fight.

“Tommy, no matter how hard you try to get out of this fight, I’m going to do everything in my power to not let you weasel your way out.

“My team and my partners have made it clear the steps you need to take to solve your latest excuse. Take them, or admit you’re a scared little b—h.”

Report: Tommy Fury denied entry to U.S. over ties with wanted crime boss Daniel Kinahan

Jake Paul’s opponent, Tommy Fury, has been denied entry to the U.S. over ties with a wanted Irish mobster.

[autotag]Tommy Fury[/autotag] won’t be able to step on U.S. soil, at least for now.

Fury, the half-brother to boxing heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, was denied entry to the U.S. upon trying to fly out of Heathrow airport in London on Tuesday. The news was reported by TMZ, which cited law enforcement sources.

Tommy Fury looked to travel to the U.S. for a Wednesday press conference to promote his Aug. 6 boxing match with YouTube star Jake Paul at Madison Square Garden in New York.

According to TMZ, the travel ban was due to the Fury family’s ties with alleged Irish crime boss Daniel Kinahan, who’s wanted by the U.S. government over a series of alleged crimes, including cocaine drug dealing, among others.

Tyson Fury also reportedly was denied U.S. entry earlier this month by officials.

It’s uncertain if these travel bans to the U.S. on the Tyson family will affect Tommy’s fight against Paul.

Kinahan was a founder of MTK Global, a management company that promoted and managed both boxing and MMA fighters. The company closed in April following sanctions on Kinahan by the U.S. government.

Jake Paul vs. Tommy Fury set for Aug 6. at Madison Square Garden

Jake Paul vs. Tommy Fury is set for Aug 6. at Madison Square Garden in New York on pay-per-view.

Jake Paul vs. Tommy Fury is official.

The social media stars will meet in an eight-round cruiserweight bout on Aug. 6 at Madison Square Garden in New York on pay-per-view, it was announced Thursday. A news conference to kick off the promotion is set for Wednesday at the arena.

Paul (5-0, 4 KOs) and Fury (8-0, 4 KOs) were scheduled to fight in December but the half-brother of Tyson Fury pulled out because of an injury and illness.

“I wasn’t sure I was going to say yes to another potential matchup against Tommy after he pulled out of our matchup last year,” Paul said. “But ultimately, knocking out a Fury was too appealing to pass up. I’ve proven I am dedicated to boxing in and out of the ring, from promoting fights, championing fighters and fighter pay, to knocking out my opponents.

“The Furys cannot say the same. They are selfish tossers. On August 6, at the mecca, Madison Square Garden, the world will see why I am on my way to being a world champion. I’m honored to fight under the same lights as some of the greatest professional boxers in history.”

Fury doesn’t think much of Jake Paul or his brother, Logan, who also has fought professionally.

“The Paul brothers’ boxing charade is about to come to an end once and for all. I am a boxer. My opponent plays boxing. Jake Paul has been dressed up to look like a boxer against retirees from other sports. On August 6, I will show the world that he does not belong in the ring.

“Thank you to my promoter Frank Warren, Most Valuable Promotions and Showtime for letting me permanently shut up Jake Paul. I look forward to headlining Madison Square Garden and knocking out this clown.”

Also on the card, unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano (42-2-1, 30 KOs) will defend her titles against Branda Carbajal of Argentina, according to the announcement.
