Tommy Fleetwood changed putters, then he tied the course record at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

“When you shoot a 62, obviously everything is going to have gone very, very well.”

The last time Tommy Fleetwood teed it up in a competitive round was a month ago at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, where he finished third.

However, when he got home for one of his first periods of rest in some time, he decided to start tinkering with his putting. He put a new TaylorMade putter in the bag, and on Wednesday in his pre-tournament press conference, he praised how he had practiced with it, but he was excited to put it to use in the heat of competition.

“To have that time at home to work on something that I’ve put a lot of effort into and something I’m really interested in; and like I said, TaylorMade have done an amazing job with it, and it’s felt good,” Fleetwood said.

After one round, it looks like a worthwhile equipment change.

Fleetwood shot 10-under 62, tying the course record at Yas Links to take the first-round lead at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the DP World Tour’s penultimate event on the schedule. He was the best putter in the field Thursday, needing only 26 putts, the lowest of any competitor in the field, and 1.5 putts per hole, which was second in the 70-player field. Fleetwood had eight birdies and an eagle en route to his record-tying round.

“Putted amazing,” he said. “Felt like I read the greens so well. Beautiful pace control and hit a lot of good putts and started holing them. I worked even all the way through to the last hole, I just hit perfect putts.

“When you shoot a 62, obviously everything is going to have gone very, very well. Just happy to have got off to a great start.”

Fleetwood said through the second half of 2024 he felt he wasn’t getting everything out of his putting as he would’ve liked. He’s a longtime pupil of Phil Kenyon, the putting coach who helped Scottie Scheffler drastically improve on the greens this year.

However, Fleetwood ran into Ken Brown and David Howell, former Scottish and English, respectively, professional golfers, who started to discuss putting with Fleetwood, sparking him to make the change

Early on, the results are paying off.

“I’ve worked with Phil Kenyon for a long time. He’s an unbelievably putting coach. You know, I always feel like I’m a good putter. It doesn’t always show,” Fleetwood said. “I happened to bump into Ken and Howler on the course and we were talking about a couple of things. Working on how I move my head in my stroke in a couple of practice drills and what happens there.

“And it’s always nice to have a good discussion. They are two of the best putters I’ve ever met and any time you’re talking to those guys, you’re always going to pick something up.”

And pick up the first-round lead, he did. Fleetwood is in front by a shot over Thorbjorn Olesen and Johannes Veerman. Tyrrell Hatton is a part of the group T-4 at 8 under. Rory McIlroy, fresh off a revamped swing, shot 5-under 67 and is T-18.

“It felt okay,” the world No. 3 said. “Sort of gotten comfortable with doing this little rehearsal before I take the club back. It felt fine. I probably wasn’t as imaginative out there or I was sort of hitting very straight shots and I hit a couple where I didn’t really see the picture of what I was trying to do with the ball flight because I was thinking too much on what I was doing with the swing.”

Tommy Fleetwood’s son, dressed as Spider-Man, meets Tom Holland, Marvel’s Spider-Man, at BMW PGA Championship

Heartwarming moment of the day.

Tommy Fleetwood is among the long list of the game’s biggest stars playing in this week’s 2024 BMW Championship at the Wentworth Club in England. However, it was his son, Frankie, that made a memory that will last a lifetime when he met Tom Holland, Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Holland was on site for Wednesday’s pro-am, which featured a star-studded lineup, and met Frankie, who was dressed up in his Spider-Man costume.

The famous actor bent down to ask Frankie some questions, including how his golf game was going. The DP World Tour’s social media team captured the heartwarming moment.

Tommy Fleetwood tied for lead, but playing at 2024 Olympics with heavy heart after senseless stabbing

“It’s very, very difficult and very, very raw at the moment,” said Fleetwood.

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France — British golfer Tommy Fleetwood is playing this Olympic tournament with a heavy heart while mourning a horrific tragedy in his hometown.

Fleetwood is from Southport, England, where three children were killed and 10 others injured in a stabbing attack Monday at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. A 17-year-old boy has been charged with the murders of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice Dasilva Aguiar and multiple counts of attempted murder, according to police.

“It’s very, very difficult and very, very raw at the moment,” said Fleetwood after Thursday’s opening round at Le Golf National.

Fleetwood entered Friday’s second round at the Paris Games four strokes off the lead after shooting a 4-under-par 67 on Thursday, but narrowed the margin with a 31 on the front nine during Friday’s second round to get within a shot of the lead. He stayed hot after the turn and if not for a bogey on No. 18, he’d be leading the event at the midway point.

Fleetwood’s 64 put him at 11 under after 36 holes, even with Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama. Jon Rahm, is two shots off the pace at 9 under.

Fleetwood posted on his Instagram account that he was “absolutely heartbroken” about the news and said “my heart will always be in Southport.”

His father and cousins still live in the town, he said.

“The majority of my family, actually, is still in Southport. Everybody feels the effects of something like that happening, and you kind of never expect it to happen, but especially in a little town like Southport. … All we can do now is try and move forward and make the best of it and do what we can for the ones that have been affected, really, because they are the ones that hurt the most.”

Ian Finnis, caddie for Tommy Fleetwood, recovering from open-heart surgery

The pair have worked together since 2016 and have won six times on the DP World Tour.

When Tommy Fleetwood announced earlier this month that his long-time caddie Ian Finnis was unable to loop for him at the 2024 Masters, he told reporters “He’s not been well all year,” but hoped his friend would be “back out sooner rather than later.”

On Tuesday, Finnis posted to his Instagram story to reveal he had undergone a successful open-heart surgery and that his “road to recovery has started.”

“Open heart surgery done!!” Finnis said on social media. “Massive thanks to all at the NHS staff. The road to recovery has started. Thanks for all the love.”

The duo began working together in 2016 and have won six times on the DP World Tour, most recently at January’s Dubai Invitational. In Finnis’ absence, Adrian Rietveld, a senior manager at TaylorMade, has caddied for Fleetwood in his last two starts on the PGA Tour.

Tommy Fleetwood traded his clubs for his stepson’s as a caddie at Challenge Tour event

No days off for Tommy Fleetwood.

No days off for Tommy Fleetwood.

After playing the last three weeks in the United States on the PGA Tour, including a T-3 finish at the 2024 Masters, Fleetwood is in United Arab Emirates this week at a Challenge Tour event. Not as a player, but as a caddie for his 17-year-old stepson Oscar Craig.

And it seems Fleetwood knows a thing or two about being a good looper. He has helped Craig, playing this week as an amateur at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabi, to a 3-under 69 start. Then, the duo continued on, making the cut and earning tee times on the weekend.

Not bad for a 17-year-old, and not bad for Fleetwood after his busy three-week stretch.

Craig earned his spot in the tournament by winning the Ras Al Khaimah Men’s Open in February. The family has a home in Dubai, so it’s not a far trip from home for them to tackle the links together this week.

Here’s a look at Fleetwood’s looping skills through photos:

For decades, golf equipment brands have made special bags, headcovers and accessories for staff players to use in major championships to serve two purposes. First, at the most prestigious events, the cool gear makes it easier for companies to showcase how many players use their equipment. Second, if they are creative and appealing enough, the limited-edition items can also be sold to fans online.

This week at Augusta National Golf Club, TaylorMade staff players will be using “Season Opener” bags, headcovers and accessories designed especially for the Masters, and fans can pick up the gear on TaylorMade’s website.

The Staff Bag ($599.99) is covered in symbols, some of which are subtle, like the three gold flags with a halo near the handle that pay homage to Amen Corner (the 11th, 12th and 13th holes), while others like the azalea-patterned TaylorMade logo are easy to understand. The lining of the pockets are covered in a peach pattern.

The headcovers for drivers, fairway woods and hybrids ($99.99) and both blade-style and mallet putters ($119.99) also have peach linings.

TaylorMade also designed special-edition TP5 and TP5x Pix balls for the 2024 Masters ($59.99) that are covered in peaches instead of the orange and black diamond pattern found on the standard 2024 version of the Pix balls. According to TaylorMade, Tommy Fleetwood, who uses a TP5x Pix in competition, plans to use the Season Opener edition during this season’s Masters.

Tommy Fleetwood made a 10 at Bay Hill’s famous par-5 sixth hole. Here’s how he did it

Somewhere, Arnold Palmer is smiling.

The par-5 sixth hole at Bay Hill Club & Lodge is one of the more famous par 5s in golf.

There’s only about 350 yards between the tee box and the green, but between that is a giant lake that snuggles the left side of the fairway from tee box to green. It’s an incredibly difficult tee shot and approach, but players can be rewarded with two strong shots.

The same can’t be said for Tommy Fleetwood, who carded a 10 on the hole Friday during the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Fleetwood’s tee shot found the fairway, but he hit not one, not two, but three approach shots into the lake before finally finding the putting surface with his eighth shot.

Two putts later, and Fleetwood walked away with a 10.

It was a struggle for Fleetwood on the opening nine, as he carded a 9-over 45. Even for the best players in the world, Bay Hill can be a beast.

The 10 isn’t even close to the highest score on the hole. John Daly famously had an 18 in 1998.

The field in Dubai is loaded.

The DP World Tour is in Dubai for the second week in a row, this time for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates GC. Defending champion Rory McIlroy headlines the stacked field, and he’ll be joined by Tommy Fleetwood, last week’s winner at the Dubai Invitational (McIlroy finished runner-up).

Other names in the field include Champion Golfer of the Year Brian Harman, Adam Scott, Nicolai Hojgaard, Cameron Young and LIV Golf’s Joaquin Niemann.

On the betting side, McIlroy is the favorite at +260, followed by Tyrrell Hatton at 10/1 and Tommy Fleetwood at 11/1.

Here are some of the best photos from the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Tommy Fleetwood tops Rory McIlroy with birdie-birdie finish to win 2024 Dubai Invitational

Fleetwood beat McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence by a shot at the DP World Tour’s 2024 opener.

What a way to start 2024 on the DP World Tour.

The European-based circuit was back in action this week at Dubai Creek Resort with the 2024 Dubai Invitational, a no-cut, 60-player field event that come Sunday featured a three-way fight for the win.

Thriston Lawrence took the clubhouse lead at 18 under with a bogey-free 7-under 64 in the final round, but it was Rory McIlroy (67) who had all the momentum on the back nine after five birdies over his final eight holes. The four-time major champion stood on the 18th tee with a one-shot lead over Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood (67) and proceeded to rinse his tee shot in the water left of the fairway, which led to a costly bogey that tied him with Lawrence at 18 under. Just as he did on the 17th, Fleetwood birdied the last to win the tournament by one at 19 under.

The victory is his seventh on the DP World Tour and first since the 2022 Nedbank Golf Challenge.

“It’s great, that winning feeling is amazing, and it’s been a really cool week. Felt like I played better and better throughout the week,” said Fleetwood. “Had a great day yesterday, and then today, playing with Rory and coming down the stretch in contention and trying to win a golf tournament was really, really cool.”

“It’s always very special when you play with one of your friends, one of the best players in the world. Challenging yourself against those guys, like I said just before, Rory’s been a very, very supportive influence on me over the past, since I’ve been him, really, but since we’ve been close,” he continued. “I’ve watched him do amazing things down the stretch in golf tournaments, and today was my turn.”

Despite the disappointing finish after starting the event with a 9-under 62 on Thursday, McIlroy said his first start of the year was “really positive.”

“I think first week back out, I think you’re going to expect some of those sloppy mistakes, and unfortunately for me, those mistakes came at the wrong time today,” said McIlroy, referencing his water ball on the 18th tee. “But you know, I’ll reflect on it and learn from today, and there’s still a lot of good stuff in there. But just need to tidy up some of the edges, and if I do that, I feel good going into next week.”

The DP World Tour will remain in the UAE for another week with the 2024 Hero Dubai Desert Classic at Emirates Golf Club, Jan. 18-21.
