Titans’ Mike Vrabel, Elijah Molden talk forced fumble vs. Jaguars

“I mean, I don’t even really know what happened,” Molden said of the play.

After not seeing a single snap defensively in the Week 4 loss to the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans cornerback Elijah Molden was back on the field in Week 5 versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The organization’s third-round pick in this year’s draft had the most impactful game of his young career, forcing a fumble just three plays into the game.

Titans safety Kevin Byard jumped on the ball, picked it up, and ran it back for a touchdown.

“I mean, I don’t even really know what happened,” Molden admitted after Sunday’s 37-19 victory. “Like, I tackled him (Jaguars tight end Dan Arnold), and then I got up, and the next thing you know [Byard] was in the end zone. It all happened in a flash. When it stood, I was just happy to help out the defense and help out the team and get the game started off on the right foot.”

Molden has been active for all five games this season and was in on 32 percent of the Titans’ defensive snaps on Sunday. The Washington product had three combined tackles on top of the forced fumble.

While he can play multiple positions, Molden primarily played slot corner in college, collecting a team-high four interceptions during his junior season.

In addition to having a nose for the ball, he’s been lauded for his physicality. Leading up the 2021 NFL Draft, scouts described the Titans draft pick as a physical defender with short-area quickness, which is exactly what he demonstrated on the forced fumble.

“It was cool to see him make a tackle and put his face right on the football and get it out of there and make a huge play for us in early in the game,” Titans’ head coach Mike Vrabel said on Monday.

Vrabel has been of the mantra that it doesn’t matter where you came from, but it matters what you do once you’re here. Molden’s strong play last Sunday is sure to earn him additional playing time. He also earned the top Pro Football Focus grade (92.6) among Titans defenders in Sunday’s win.

The Titans head coach has repeatedly stressed the importance of creating turnovers to give the offense a short field.

While the defense has been successful in creating pressure on opposing quarterbacks this season, they also have to create turnovers in the open field. That’s where Molden’s physicality can be a strength to this team.

“I take a lot of pride in it,” Molden said on being labeled a physical player. “Like, I don’t bang my head against the locker before the game. It just comes out whenever I play free, whenever I know what I’m doing, whenever I can digest the call and see the offense. After that, I can just kind of cut it loose. That’s when I make my best play. That’s when I’m stickiest in coverage and all that stuff.”

Molden and the Titans will host Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on “Monday Night Football” in Week 6.

Titans looking for first win vs. rookie QB in Mike Vrabel era in Week 5

The Titans are 0-4 versus rookie quarterbacks during the Mike Vrabel era.

Mike Vrabel has yet to experience a losing season since taking over as head coach of the Tennessee Titans before the 2018 season. He has a career 31-21 regular-season record entering Week 5 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Vrabel has also led the Titans to postseason berths in two out of three seasons, including a trip to the AFC Championship Game in 2019.

But since he’s been at the helm in Tennessee, Vrabel’s Titans have yet to beat a rookie quarterback.

In 2018, Tennessee lost 13-12 to the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen, the seventh overall pick in the NFL draft that year. In September of the following year, the Titans lost to a Gardner Minshew-led Jaguars team, 20-7.

And, perhaps the two worst losses in recent memory had rookie quarterbacks under center for Tennessee’s opponents — the Titans lost to Joe Burrow and a one-win Bengals team in 2020, and Zach Wilson and the winless Jets last week.

In all, the Titans are 0-4 versus rookie quarterbacks during the Vrabel era (H/T @league_winner on Twitter).

This stat is interesting to say the least, but it’s also relevant because the Titans are facing another rookie quarterback in Trevor Lawrence on Sunday, and could have as many as five more games against first-year signal-callers following Week 5.

Lawrence was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, but has been a mixed bag through the first four weeks. The Clemson product owns a 57 percent completion rate, 873 passing yards, and a 5-to-7 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Lawrence did a better job taking care of the football last week against the Cincinnati Bengals and posted a 70 percent completion rate, but he also posted lackluster production with 204 yards and no passing touchdowns.

Some of his damage came on the ground, though, as he finished with a career-high 36 rushing yards and one touchdown — and as we know, one of Tennessee’s biggest issues has been quarterbacks with mobility.

The Titans are 4.5-point favorites entering Sunday’s contest with the Jaguars. After losing to the winless Jets last week, there’s plenty of room for concern against Titans’ division rival, a team still looking for its first win.

But something has to give on Sunday — either Mike Vrabel notches his first win against a rookie quarterback, or the Jaguars tally their first win of the 2021 season.

7 burning questions for Titans ahead of Week 5 game vs. Jaguars

Can the Titans avoid a second straight letdown game?

A lot is at stake for the Tennessee Titans in their Week 5 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Titans will be facing a winless team in consecutive weeks, but they will look to achieve a better result on the road against the Jaguars.

Tennessee enters as 3.5-point favorites over the Jaguars. The Titans have won seven of the last eight against their divisional rival, and they’ll look to make it four straight on Sunday.

Here are seven questions to keep tabs on leading up to the first matchup with the Jaguars in 2021.

Prediction

Titans 27, Jaguars 20

Moneyline (?)

Despite Foles being back for his second straight game, the Titans are the better team. Led by QB Ryan Tannehill and RB Derrick Henry, Tennessee’s offense is more than capable of knocking off the Jaguars.

Bet the TITANS (-175) to win this game outright over the Jaguars. Jacksonville is allowing 134.6 rushing yards per game, which Tennessee will exploit.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Titans to win outright would return a profit of $5.68.

Against the Spread (?)

The Titans are 3.5-point home favorites over the Jaguars in this AFC South showdown. They’ve covered the spread in three of their last four games, and they’ll make it four of five Sunday.

Take the TITANS (-106) to cover the spread in this matchup, winning at home by a touchdown.

Over/Under (?)

The projected total is only 41.5 points in this game, which isn’t very high. The Titans have scored at least 23 points in each of their last four games and Jacksonville still has talent on offense with Foles, RB Leonard Fournette and WR DJ Chark, too.

Bet the OVER (-115) in this matchup.
