Eagles’ regular season countdown: Every player to wear No. 93 for Philadelphia

With Eagles training camp quickly approaching, we’re looking at every player to wear the No. 95 for Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Eagles will kick off their 2023 regular season against the New England Patriots on Sept. 10, now 77 days away.

From now until the start of the season, we’ll be counting down each day by revisiting the players who have worn that specific jersey number.

No. 93 is worn by third-year defensive tackle Milton Williams, who’ll look for double-digit sacks for the second straight year.

With less than 90 days until kickoff, here’s a look at every player to ever wear No. 93 for the Eagles (via Pro Football Reference):

Report: Ravens DL coach Joe Cullen top target for Jaguars defensive coordinator job

The Jaguars are starting to build their staff out after hiring Urban Meyer and Ravens’ Joe Cullen could be their defensive coordinator

The Jacksonville Jaguars finished their coaching search, bringing in former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer to right the franchise. But just because either Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman or defensive coordinator Don Martindale wasn’t chosen for the coaching vacancy doesn’t mean Baltimore’s staff isn’t still in the crosshairs.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Ravens defensive line coach Joe Cullen is a top target for the defensive coordinator job on Meyer’s staff.

Cullen has been with Baltimore for the last five seasons, joining the team in 2016 after a two-season stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s primarily been a defensive line coach throughout his career, both in the NFL and in the college ranks.

If Cullen does leave for Jacksonville’s defensive coordinator job, he’ll be missed in Baltimore. Cullen has helped develop players like Michael Pierce, Brandon Williams, and Timmy Jernigan; while keeping the Ravens’ defense among the best against the run over that time.

Jags will look to undrafted rookie Doug Costin, Daniel Ekuale for ‘flexibility’ at DT

After Timmy Jernigan wasn’t able to get going, the Jags are hoping for a spark from Doug Costin and Daniel Ekuale at DT Week 4.

The Jacksonville Jaguars started the week off by making adjustments to the interior of their defensive line, parting ways with veteran Timmy Jernigan. With him no longer on the team, coach Doug Marrone expects undrafted rookie Doug Costin to get more reps while Daniel Ekuale was also promoted off the practice squad to help out, too. In return, the Jags are hoping for more versatility in the interior as they’ve struggled to be effective at the defensive tackle position.

The Jags signed Jernigan on Aug. 17 in hopes that he could provide a spark for the team in the interior. Unfortunately, he could never get going for them, garnering just one tackle in three games and 54 snaps. That led to him ultimately ending his Jags tenure with a Pro Football Focus grade of 44.1.

Costin was a player who impressed in training camp and he’s seemingly put together some good regular season practices together. After coming from the University of Miami (Ohio) as an undrafted rookie this April, Costin was one of four undrafted free-agents to make the Jags’ final roster and Sunday will mark his first snaps.

Ekuale, on the other hand, is a player who does have some regular season experience after making the Cleveland Browns’ final 53-man roster last season. He played in seven games and registered four tackles, one of which were for a loss.

Jags promote DT Daniel Ekuale to active roster, release DT Timmy Jernigan

The Jags made a roster transaction on defense by releasing Timmy Jernigan and signing Daniel Ekuale off their practice squad.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made some transactions on the defensive side Monday by promoting defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale to the active roster and releasing veteran defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan. Jernigan’s release was initially reported by SB Nation’s Demetrius Harvey and later the Jags confirmed it alongside the additions of kickers Steven Hauschka (to the active roster) and Aldrick Rosas (to their practice squad).

Jernigan’s release is one many weren’t expecting after the team just signed the Lake City native back in mid August, however, he never really found a groove with the team. In 54 snaps and three games, he only managed to register one tackle, which came Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans.

Jernigan previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles before signing with the Jags, however, the team didn’t resign him this offseason making him a free agent.

As for Ekuale, he joined the Jags after final cuts through their practice squad. He entered the league in 2018 and was on the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad for most of his rookie season. Last season, however, he made their final-53 man roster but had to be placed on injured reserve in November due to a calf injury. Ultimately, he was able to garner four tackles, one of which was registered as a tackle for loss.

Dawuane Smoot enjoying Timmy Jernigan’s infectious energy so far

Timmy Jernigan is already impacting his teammates despite being with the Jags for just over a week.

The Jacksonville Jaguars lost a lot this offseason, however, many would argue the biggest loss was that of Calais Campbell, who was a superb leader. Of course, when he was traded to the Baltimore Ravens, the Jags’ defense was put in a position where there was the uncertainty of who would replace his presence, especially in the locker room.

Now, with under three weeks left before the season, many players have stepped up to the plate for the defensive line like Josh Allen, Abry Jones, and Dawuane Smoot, all of whom were on the roster last year. Additionally, despite being on the team for just under 10 days, Timmy Jernigan has also made his presence felt as a leader, bringing an infectious energy to the team.

In his recent meeting with the media, Smoot discussed how Jernigan pushed him through Tuesday’s practice, which came after the Jags had a maintenance day on Monday.

“He’s a dog. He’s out there with all the energy and he brings it. Like today, I was down. We just came off a little vet day or whatever we just had, but like I was down, and he just came out there like, ‘What? What?’,” said Smoot.

“He was out there singing and everything. He really got my hyped up and I ended up having a good practice right off his shoulders. Hey man, I love him. He’s definitely somebody I want on the team for a long time.”

Sounds like the type of guy every workplace could use, right?

Smoot’s praise towards Jernigan isn’t shocking because many raved about his energy while with the Philadelphia Eagles. While there, he was able to win a Super Bowl ring, which is even better for the Jags because it means they not only got an energetic leader but one who has championship experience.

If I had to guess, Jernigan’s energy is a result of being able to return to the football field after going through the offseason unsigned. Additionally, he’s basically playing for his hometown team as a Lake City, Fla. native, something he expressed his happiness about in his first presser.

While many have concerns for Jernigan’s availability when looking at how many games he’s missed in the past couple of seasons (19), he does offer a high reward when healthy. If his luck can change this year, the Jags could very well have another free-agent gem on their hands, which is something they’ve had success with under general manager Dave Caldwell.

Takeaways from Jags’ Saturday scrimmage: Timmy Jernigan, Luq Barcoo have strong showings

The Jags’ defense had themselves a day in Saturday’s scrimmage with new additions like Timmy Jernigan and Luq Barcoo standing out.

The Jacksonville Jaguars took the field for their fifth padded practice Saturday, which doubled as a scrimmage (minus the fans). With the offense having a good week heading into this point, the defensive unit was the better of the two Saturday as Friday’s maintenance day seemingly helped them.

Here are some takeaways we gathered from Saturday’s session which proved to be another productive day for the Jags:

Timmy Jernigan begins to make noise for DL

The signing of Timmy Jernigan on Monday was the news of the week for the Jags and he’s beginning to find his footing it appears. His name was one mentioned by several in attendance Saturday as he gave the offensive line issues in the trenches and found himself disrupting plays on several occasions.

John Reid of The Florida Times-Unionnoted that Jernigan’s presence was felt during the Jags’ 19-play scrimmage. In particular, he had a play during a goal-line snap where he shot the gap and overpowered offensive lineman Blake Hance. Had it been in a game, the play would’ve been a sack for Jernigan on rookie quarterback Jake Luton.

Young secondary members step up

Thursday we noted that the Jags’ young secondary members struggled against Keenan McCardell’s receivers group Thursday as they were without starters Ronnie Harrison (concussion protocol) and C.J. Henderson (non-coronavirus related). Since, Harrison has returned but Henderson remains out, which has given the staff a chance to look at other young players in his spot.

One player in particular who was mentioned frequently was undrafted rookie Luq Barcoo, a player who’ve we told our readers to be mindful of in the past. During Saturday’s scrimmage, Reid noted that Barcoo stepped up to break up a 20-yard post pattern to camp star D.J. Chark Jr. This just adds to many noteworthy plays he’s made over the last few days as he pushes for a roster spot in what is a crowded group of corners.

Speaking of the cornerback group being crowded, fourth-round draft pick Josiah Scott has been active, too. He’s done it all from acquiring multiple picks, to causing pass breakups, and has been near the ball frequently. Those all are good signs for a player who the Jags probably believe is their nickelback of the future.

First Coast News’ Mia O’Brien also singled out seventh-round rookie Chris Claybrooks for making a play on receiver Michael Walker as he ran a curl route. Claybrooks was able to make a full extension breakup on the pass (by Luton).

O’Brien also singled out second-year safety Andrew Wingard, who is being viewed as a special teams leader by the staff. During Saturday’s practice, he was calling out checks and commands for the unit as they are looking for a new leader with players like Lerentee McCray and Cody Davis gone.

LB Myles Jack and RB Leonard Fournette go back and forth

Two of the team’s leaders, Myles Jack and Leonard Fournette, exchanged blows in 1-on-1s with Jack striking first in a blitz pickup drill. Jack was able to catch Fournette with a swim move as the fourth-year running back dipped his head and lost track of him. When it came to coverage, however, Fournette proved to give Jack issues who struggled with his footing on multiple occasions.

Other notes and tidbits

  • Tre Herndon spoke with the media Saturday to discuss this offseason and how he’s helped his fellow defensive backs.

  • Secondary coach Tim Walton also met with the media before Saturday’s practice. He discussed the growth of C.J. Henderson, the personalities within his group, and more.

  • The Jags made a signing after their scrimmage, adding tight end Matt Flanagan. They waived/injured second-year tight end Charles Jones to make room for the transaction.

Watch: Newly acquired DT Timmy Jernigan takes practice field with Jags

Timmy Jernigan wasted no time hitting the practice field with the Jags after the team made his signing official Monday morning.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made the signing of Timmy Jernigan official Monday morning after the word broke last week that he met with the team. In the process of the wait, the Jags seemingly addressed all the COVID-19 protocols, which allowed him to take the field immediately Monday morning.

Below several Jags media members caught him in action during the Jags’ first padded practice as the veteran has seemingly chosen to wear No. 98.

Jernigan, 27, previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles but was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens who traded him in 2017. In his first year with the Eagles, Jernigan was able to aid the team to a Super Bowl LI victory over the New England Patriots and remained with the Eagles until 2019.

Jernigan, a native of nearby Lake City, Fla., will enter his career with the Jags with 51 starts, 132 tackles, and 17.5 sacks on his career.

Jags officially sign former Eagles DT Timmy Jernigan

The Jags have made it official with Lake City native Timmy Jernigan.

After meeting with him last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars have officially signed former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan. To make room for his addition, they placed defensive lineman Rodney Gunter on the reserve/retired list after he announced that he’d be stepping away from football with a heart condition.

Jernigan, 27, grew up just outside of Jacksonville in Lake City, Fla. and attended high school there (Columbia High). After graduating, Jernigan played collegiate football at Florida State University where he helped the team win a BCS Championship in 2014 and was a standout on defense. As a result, he was drafted in the second-round by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015, but was eventually traded to the Eagles in 2017.

While with the Eagles, Jernigan once again found success as a player, aiding the defense and team during their Super Bowl LI a few season ago. However, since that moment he’s struggled to stay healthy, only playing in 13 games in the last two seasons. Still, with the loss of Gunter, this felt like a gamble the Jags needed to make.

Jernigan’s addition also comes as the Jags have lost other pieces on the defensive line this month. Al Woods and Lerentee McCray both decided to opt-out due to concerns for the coronavirus, while Brian Price (knee) and Dontavius Russell (hip) were placed on injured reserve.

Jernigan will enter this season with 51 starts, 132 tackles, and 17.5 sacks on his career. He’ll be combining his skill with the likes of a Jags defensive line that already looks respectable on paper and consists of Josh Allen, Taven Bryan, Abry Jones, and Davon Hamilton among notables.

Report: Jaguars expected to sign former Eagles DT Timmy Jernigan

The Jags have been looking for help along their defensive line on the free-agent market and plans to sign former Eagles DT Timmy Jernigan.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been looking for help off the free-agent market to bolster their defensive line and that has seemingly sent them in the direction of a star player who grew up just outside of the city. Per NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the team plans to sign former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan after the veteran recently had a visit with them.

Jernigan, 27, is a native of Lake City, Fla., which is about 70 miles out of Jacksonville. Before being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the second-round of the 2014 NFL Draft, he played collegiately at Florida State University where he was a standout and a BCS National Champion (2014).

After three seasons with the Ravens, he was traded to the Eagles in April of 2017 and remained there for three seasons. Of course, while there he helped the team win Super Bowl LII.

The Jags interest in Jernigan comes after defensive tackle Al Woods opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns for the coronavirus and both Brian Price and Dontavius Russell had to be placed on injured reserve this past weekend. That said, the Jags have reached out to Jernigan who seemingly doesn’t mind playing close to home.

Jernigan will enter 2020 with 51 starts, 132 tackles, and 17.5 sacks on his career. He was also able to register a Pro Football Focus grade of 65.9 in 2019. If/when the Jags make his signing official, he’ll join a unit that consists of Pro Bowler Josh Allen, longtime veteran Abry Jones, first-round pick K’Lavon Chaisson, and maybe Yannick Ngakoue if he decides to return.

Report: Texans to not finalize deal with DT Timmy Jernigan

The Houston Texans decided to not finalize a deal with defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan due to injury concerns.

[jwplayer 4LoBRv6v]

The Houston Texans have decided to not add defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan to their roster.

According to a report from the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, the Texans feel comfortable with their depth at defensive tackle and uncomfortable with Jernigan’s injury history. Thus, the AFC South champions will not make official a one-year, $3.75 million contract that had $1.25 million guaranteed.

The report stated that Dr. Robert Watkins cleared Jernigan. However, the former Baltimore Raven and Philadelphia Eagle missed six games in 2019 due to injury and then 13 the year prior.

On April 16, coach and general manager Bill O’Brien referred to Jernigan as a “big get” in the club’s free agency haul.

“That was a big get for us to be able to bring Timmy Jernigan onto our roster, which is somebody I didn’t mention earlier but I should have,” said O’Brien.” I still think we’ve got to add depth there.”

With the Texans’ 40th overall pick in Round 2 of the NFL Draft, Houston added Ross Blacklock out of TCU, who has the ability to play defensive tackle but also kick outside, similar to Jernigan’s skillset.
