Former NFL quarterback: Drake Maye is as good as any quarterback he’s ever evaluated

Hasselbeck believes Maye is as good of a prospect as Matthew Stafford and Andrew Luck was.

It seems like every day, someone comes up with a reason why North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye is behind Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels ahead of the 2024 NFL draft.

Is it prospect fatigue? If you watch Maye, you can clearly see the tools, such as his size, arm strength, and athleticism. You can also see the areas that need some work, such as his mechanics and footwork. But fortunately for whoever drafts Maye, those are the easiest things to fix.

The Minnesota Vikings are believed to covet Maye. However, they have no shot at him at No. 11. The Vikings did acquire another first-round pick in hopes of moving up to land a franchise quarterback, be it Maye or someone else.

The truth about Maye is this: He will go no lower than No. 3 overall to the New England Patriots in next month’s draft. And there’s a good chance he goes No. 2 to the Washington Commanders.

Speaking of Washington, Tim Hasselbeck, who works as an ESPN analyst, spent two seasons with the then-Redskins in the early 2000s. He was a guest on “The Gresh and Fauria Show” on WEEI, where he discussed Maye.

“[I’ve] been at ESPN for 15 years evaluating quarterbacks as they come out for the draft,” Hasselbeck said via Mike Kadlick of Audacy. “I think he’s as good of a prospect as I have evaluated in this entire time. So, you know, from the Matthew Staffords to the Matt Ryans to you name ’em over that stretch—Andrew Luck … I think that he’s that good of a prospect.”

That’s a pretty high bar.

Hasselbeck wasn’t finished heaping praise on Maye.

“I think when people go through the process with Drake Maye,” Hasselbeck said. “There is almost nothing to not like about him. Now, he’s a really big guy, so if you’ve got really picky, could you say, ‘Hey, I’d like his delivery to be a little more compact’? Yeah, absolutely, you could say that… I think that when I look at him, I think he’s going to be a better pro than college player; I think athletically, physically, mentally — like athletically he’s going to be on par with the best.”

Opinions have been all over the place on Maye. But there is always one prospect — usually a quarterback — who deals with this overanalysis every year. Last year, it was Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud. How did Stroud turn out?

No one is saying Maye will replicate Stroud’s success, but some of the talk about Maye being overrated just needs to stop. He’s an elite prospect. If Caleb Williams wasn’t in this draft, Maye — not Jayden Daniels — would be the consensus favorite to go No. 1 overall.

Tim Hasselbeck thinks Russell Wilson could be out of football

Seems like an extremely harsh statement from Tim Hasselbeck. Russell Wilson might be done in Denver, but he’s not done in the NFL.

Could Russell Wilson potentially be out of football? It sounds farfetched, but former fellow NFL quarterback Tim Hasslebeck appears to think so.

Speaking on ESPN’s “Get Up” program earlier this week, Hasslebeck gave reasons why the Denver Broncos quarterback could be very well on his way out of the league.

Hasslebeck also chimed in on how Wilson’s age, diminished play, and supposed lack of leadership would make it hard for the QB to land a spot next year.

Wilson experienced somewhat of a career revival under first-year Broncos head coach Sean Payton in 2023. He completed 66 percent of his passes for 3,070 yards, to add along with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also added 341 yards on the ground with three scores through 15 games. Are they classic Wilson numbers? No. But they are also his highest since his 2020 NFL season.

So even if the Broncos move on from him, Wilson may have stated his case as a player who deserves a third chance from an NFL franchise.

Colin Cowherd believes Russell Wilson will not finish his career in Seattle

While we still believe that Wilson isn’t going anywhere, it’s hard to ignore all the chatter out there about Wilson potentially leaving.

Seahawks fans who want to see the team move on from Russell Wilson and find a new franchise quarterback should take notice of all the other fanbases around the league that would be thrilled to see Wilson suiting up for their team in 2022.

While we still believe that Wilson isn’t going anywhere, it’s hard to ignore all of the chatter out there about Wilson potentially leaving for another club. For what it’s worth, ESPN analyst Tim Hasselbeck is predicting that Wilson will be starting for the Steelers come Week 1. Meanwhile, Colin Cowherd doesn’t think Wilson will finish his career in Seattle.

There’s still no definitive reporting about Wilson truly wanting a change of scenery. At best, there’s only rumored interest from a couple of AFC teams who are expected to make a change at QB this offseason.

Jordan Schultz says Colts owner Jim Irsay would love to deal for Wilson.

Also, Ben Allbright says the Broncos would explore acquiring Wilson if he becomes available and Aaron Rodgers stays with the Packers.

If the organization changes course and does decide to trade Wilson, they probably wouldn’t want to see him playing for a conference rival. That makes Denver and Indianapolis the most likely candidates to make a deal. The trouble is neither team has a suitable starting quarterback to offer in exchange and the same goes for the Steelers.

There is only a handful of quarterbacks around the league who we would rather have than Wilson. That list consists of Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson. At the moment, none of them are available.

Truth is, there’s really only one logical partner for the Seahawks if Wilson winds up on the trade block. If they don’t mind dealing him to an NFC team, the Eagles have three first-round picks, several quality pass rushers and two intruiging young quarterbacks on rookie contracts. Until Philadelphia gets on the phone with an offer that’s too good to refuse, Wilson is staying put.

Tim Hasselbeck predicts Russell Wilson will be starting for Steelers in Week 1

If you’re already tired of hearing about potential Russell Wilson trade scenarios, it’s going to be a very long offseason.

If you’re already tired of hearing about potential Russell Wilson trade scenarios it’s going to be a very long offseason. Even though the Seahawks say they have no intention of trading Wilson and their franchise QB says he wants to stay and win more Super Bowls in Seattle, several teams around the NFL will be in the market for a new starter this year, so the speculation won’t stop until training camp.

The latest idea comes from former Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s brother Tim, an ESPN analyst who is predicting that Wilson will be starting for the Steelers in Week 1.

Following Clemson’s 30-24 win over Louisville on Saturday night at Cardinal Stadium, former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck gave his takeaways from the ACC Atlantic Division contest.

Hasselbeck was the color analyst for the ACC Network’s television broadcast and provided further commentary on the network after the game, which saw the Tigers’ defense muster a goal-line stand in the waning moments of the fourth quarter to escape Louisville with a victory.

“Dabo Swinney had talked to us about yes, they’ve been struggling offensively, but their defense has been playing at a championship level,” Hasselbeck said. “They needed them to play at a championship level (Saturday night) because they came up with a goal-line stand.”

Louisville rushed for 223 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns against Clemson, with quarterback Malik Cunningham accounting for 134 yards on the ground and two of the rushing touchdowns.

However, Clemson’s defense stiffened up at the goal line when it had to, preventing the Cardinals from punching the ball into the end zone on four tries.

Earlier in the fourth quarter, D.J. Uiagalelei scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 8-yard run with 4:12 remaining after returning from a knee injury he suffered in the first half.

“Four plays from the 2-yard line. It was an outstanding effort by all 11 guys,” Hasselbeck said. “And to think that Louisville had been running the football fairly well on them all night long, just not able to get it done. It was kind of the grit and determination of the group on the defensive side that got it done, and then along with, to be fair, the job that D.J. Uiagalelei did coming back from his own injury.”

With the win, Clemson is still alive in the Atlantic Division race. And while the Tigers will certainly need some help along the way, they still have hope of making it back to Charlotte for a seventh straight appearance in the ACC Championship game.

“Probably too early to count Clemson out at this point,” Hasselbeck said.

Former NFL QB gives his takeaways from Clemson’s win over BC

Following Clemson’s 19-13 win over Boston College on Saturday night at Death Valley, a former NFL quarterback gave his takeaways from the ACC Atlantic Division contest.

Tim Hasselbeck, who played at Boston College, was the color analyst for the ACC Network’s television broadcast and provided further commentary on the network after the game.

“It was a remarkable game,” Hasselbeck said. “Not necessarily the offensive fireworks that you’re accustomed to seeing when Clemson is typically on the field. So, it was a great effort by the Clemson defense to come up with the turnovers. It was a great performance by Boston College.”

Clemson’s defense came up with three turnovers, including the game-sealing fumble recovery by defensive end K.J. Henry after BC quarterback Dennis Grosel mishandled the snap with less than a minute left.

Clemson’s offense, though, was only able to get six points on a pair of field goals after BC’s other two turnovers — a couple of interceptions from Grosel.

Offensively, while the Tigers didn’t turn the ball over and totaled 438 yards — their second-most this season behind their 504 yards against South Carolina State — they couldn’t get in the end zone again after the 59-yard touchdown run by Kobe Pace in the first quarter.

D.J. Uiagalelei completed 13-of-28 passes for 207 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

“I think just going forward, the thing that we’re going to continue to talk about is when will this Clemson offense get back on track?” Hasselbeck said. “With all of the talent that they have at wide receiver, with the ability that their quarterback has, still yet another performance where they are just off. Seemed like they’re just off.

“So, not being able to score 20 points in a game at home, when your defense is creating the turnovers that they created tonight, I think certainly is going to still be something that they need to work on going forward.”

All in all, Hasselbeck believes it was a solid win for the Tigers (3-2, 2-1 ACC) over a BC team that came into the game undefeated at 4-0.

“That is a good football team, and it’s a football team that came into Death Valley with a lot of confidence,” Hasselbeck said. “And with the way Clemson started, they let them build on that confidence. But it was that grit and determination and the toughness of their football team, especially on the defensive side, that kept them in it. They were able to make a play at the end, and I think that’s why Dabo was happy with the fight he saw in his football team.”
