Texas Football Recruiting: Garfield Lawrence releases top two schools

Texas and Houston are the two schools left in Garfield Lawrence’s recruitment.

When Texas extended an offer to Garfield Lawrence on Jan. 19, it was an instant gamechanger in his recruitment. The three-star outside linebacker/defensive end made a trip to Austin four days later to get a feel for the school.

Lawrence is currently committed to play for Les Miles and Kansas. That verbally came in on Nov. 30 and despite no announcement of a decommitment, the Jayhawks are no longer in the running for the Tyler Legacy product.

According to his Twitter, Texas and Houston are the two schools remaining in Lawrence’s recruitment. Lawrence was able to take another road trip over the weekend to see what the Cougars had to offer. There has been no timeline set for when he is expected to commit.

On the 247Sports composite, Lawrence is the No. 770 player and No. 49 strong-side defensive end in the country. Within the state of Texas, he sits just outside the top 100 at No. 106.

With a commitment to Texas, Steve Sarkisian would land his first recruit on the defensive side out of the 2021 class. The Longhorns currently lead on the 247Sports crystal ball, with all four predictions having Lawrence ending up in Austin.

New defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski would likely place Lawrence as an outside linebacker who is mostly playing up on the line of scrimmage. Measuring at 6-foot-4 and 240-pound, he would not be big enough to play interior defensive line. Lawrence would be better suited as a designated pass rusher.

National signing day for the 2021 class is set to take place on Feb. 3.

Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns offer current Kansas commit Garfield Lawrence

Texas recently offered three-star defensive end Garfield Lawrence, who originally committed to Kansas on Nov. 30.

Texas has recently sent an offer to Garfield Lawrence, a 2021 defensive end out of Tyler, Texas. The three-star prospect committed to Kansas on Nov. 30 but decided not to sign during early signing day. The Longhorns will be pushing hard to flip Lawrence before the Feb. 3 signing date.

Lawrence had an impressive senior season for Tyler Legacy High School and has garnered more attention because of it. He finished with 48 tackles, 12.0 tackles for a loss, seven sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

Flipping the defensive end would not be the first 2021 prospect Texas has taken from a Big 12 opponent. Three-star quarterback Charles Wright was once committed to Iowa State and three-star defensive tackle Byron Murphy flipped from Baylor.

New defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski and reported defensive line coach Bo Davis have just under a month to change Lawrence’s mind.
