Several players remain out, as expected. Those include QB Tyler Van Dyke, DL James Thompson Jr. and WR Joseph Griffin Jr.

The one notable update from the injury report: standout true freshman outside linebacker Thomas Heiberger has been upgraded to ‘questionable.’ Heiberger suffered a knee injury during training camp in August and has yet to be active for a game this season.

The four-star recruit in the class of 2024 has turned heads from the moment he arrived on campus this offseason. He’s only a true freshman, but he was already competing for a spot in the team’s two-deep at outside linebacker.

Heiberger’s status will be worth monitoring as kickoff time approaches. Wisconsin badly needs a boost at the position.

On the other side, USC key defensive starter Akili Arnold is listed as ‘questionable’ entering pregame warmups. An earlier report listed him as doubtful to suit up and play.

Wisconsin and USC will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET, 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on CBS and Paramount+.

247Sports names Wisconsin’s most impactful true freshmen entering 2024 season

Wisconsin’s most impactful true freshmen entering 2024 season:

Wisconsin boasts two players on 247Sports’ recent list of the 100 first-year players who will influence the 2024 college football season.

Those two Badgers are linebacker Thomas Heiberger and offensive tackle Kevin Heywood.

Heywood is the headliner of a Wisconsin class of 2024 that finished No. 23 in the national ranking and No. 7 in the new Big Ten landscape. The four-star tackle finished the recruiting cycle as 247Sports’ No. 50 player in the class and No. 4 offensive tackle.

Heiberger also finished with four-star status and was ranked as the No. 462 overall player in the class and the No. 40 linebacker.

Both project to play sizable roles for the Badgers in 2024 relative to their nonexistent collegiate experience. Heywood could be one of Wisconsin’s primary depth options at tackle along with Barrett Nelson, while Heiberger could immediately start on special teams.

Wisconsin enters 2024 with veteran starters at both tackle positions: Jack Nelson and Riley Mahlman. Rumor is Heywood has already made a significant early impression and could open the season as the Badgers’ second-team left tackle.

The Badgers also enter with a significant talent base at both linebacker positions. But Heiberger’s athleticism has reportedly stuck out throughout the offseason and should give him Day 1 snaps on special teams.

Importantly, both players project to be impact starters in the years to come. But it’s rare that true freshmen see the field and contribute immediately. If things hold, Wisconsin could have multiple do so in 2024.

It already appears that Luke Fickell found a few gems in the 2024 cycle, with more players sure to emerge as the 2024 season gets underway.

Wisconsin’s class of 2025, meanwhile, ranks No. 13 in the nation and No. 5 in the Big Ten after landing Wilnerson Telemaque on Tuesday. The class is a terrific follow-up to Fickell’s record-breaking 2024 cycle. Both mark a bright future for the Badgers.

Wisconsin’s class of 2024 as a whole ranks No. 23 nationally and No. 7 in the new Big Ten.

Heiberger is among eight Wisconsin signees who enrolled early and are on campus for the offseason program. It appears he’s already making a positive impact.

Badgers offer three-star defensive lineman committed to Pitt

Wisconsin offered Francis Brewu, a three-star class of 2024 defensive tackle from Columbus, Ohio on Thursday.

Wisconsin offered Francis Brewu, a three-star class of 2024 defensive tackle from Columbus, Ohio on Thursday. The 6-foot-2, 270-pound athlete committed to Pittsburgh in March, but considering he’s only a junior at Thomas Worthington High School, he could choose to go elsewhere.

Overall, Brewu now has 19 Division 1 offers, including three from within the Big Ten. With Luke Fickell at the helm, the Badgers have expanded their recruiting scope to be more of a national effort, though the head coach is an Ohio native and could sway the defensive lineman to stay in the Midwest.

To this point, the Badger have gotten three defensive commitments for the class of 2024, reeling in three-star linebackers Landon Gauthier (Green Bay, WI) and Thomas Heiberger (Sioux Falls, SD) as well as three-star safety Kahmir Prescott (Philadelphia, PA).

The Badgers offered Sean Sevillano Jr., a three-star defensive lineman from Clearwater, Florida on Saturday. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound athlete is a junior at Clearwater Academy International and will be a member of the class of 2024 recruiting class wherever he ends up.

Sevillano Jr. has now received 27 Division 1 offers, while Ohio State and Notre Dame have established themselves as early favorites according to 247Sports. With Luke Fickell and the rest of the new staff at the helm in 2023, athletes like Sevillano Jr. could be realistic options for Wisconsin moving forward.

The upcoming campaign could put the Badgers on the map as a top program in the nation, elevating them from being one of the top programs in the Big Ten.

So far for the class of 2024, Wisconsin has gotten three commitments from three-star defensive athletes. To this point, linebackers Thomas Heiberger (Sioux Falls, SD) and Landon Gauthier (Green Bay, WI) as well as safety Kahmir Prescott (Philadelphia, PA) have picked Madison as their college destinations.

Wisconsin offered Kian Payne, a class of 2024 defensive lineman from Overland Park, Kansas on Sunday. He still has one more season of high school football at St. Thomas Aquinas before he’d make the leap to the collegiate level.

Although he doesn’t carry an official rating, Payne has now received eight Division 1 offers, with the Badgers being the first Power Five school to offer him. With it being late in the recruiting cycle, Wisconsin as high of a chance as any to reel him in for 2024.

So far for the class of 2024, head coach Luke Fickell and defensive coordinator Mike Tressel have already brought in three-star linebackers Thomas Heiberger (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) and Landon Gauthier (Green Bay, Wisconsin).

Badgers offer four-star safety from Ohio

Wisconsin offered Koy Beasley, a four-star class of 2024 safety from Cincinnati, Ohio on Wednesday.

Wisconsin offered Koy Beasley, a four-star safety from Cincinnati, Ohio on Wednesday. The 6-foot-0, 180 pound athlete still has one more season of high school football at LaSalle before he’d potentially join a collegiate program as a member of their class of 2024.

As of now, Beasley has received 12 Division 1 offers, with powerhouses like Georgia and USC already having extended offers to him. Considering he’s from Cincy, he’ll likely hear from Cincinnati and Ohio State at some point, but Luke Fickell’s name certainly carries value in his community.

The safety could wait a number of months to decide where he wants to end up, but if he chooses Wisconsin he’ll become their first commitment in the secondary. Three-star linebackers Landon Gauthier (Green Bay, Wisconsin) and Thomas Heiberger (Sioux Falls, South Dakota) already choosing Mike Tressel’s defense and the Badgers in the class of 2024.

Wisconsin offers linebacker from South Dakota after junior day

The Badgers offered Thomas Heiberger, a 6-foot-4 class of 2024 linebacker from South Dakota this weekend.

The Badgers offered Thomas Heiberger, a class of 2024 linebacker from Jefferson, South Dakota this weekend. The 6-foot-4, 205 pound athlete was visiting Wisconsin as a part of the team’s junior day event and was officially offered by the team.

Heiberger is now up to five Division 1 offers, with Wisconsin and Texas Tech being his only offers from Power-5 schools. Considering the Badgers’ track record at the linebacker position, Heiberger could certainly benefit from joining the program that has pumped out NFL talent like Leo Chenal, Jack Sanborn and Nick Herbig over the past couple seasons.

Currently, Wisconsin has secured the commitments of two athletes from the class of 2024, four-star quarterback Mabrey Mettauer (The Woodlands, Texas) and cornerback Austin Alexander (Chicago Heights, Illinois).
