WWE Backlash 2023: Date, start time, match card

We get you set for the first WWE premium live event in Puerto Rico in nearly 20 years.

When WrestleMania is in the rear view mirror, it can only be time for the Backlash.

It makes sense that WWE follows its biggest event of every calendar year with a show that deals with its repercussions, and even though the company has moved away from branding it that way directly in 2023 — the show was actually called WrestleMania Backlash the last few years — there’s no question that the fingerprints of the Show of Shows are on this event as usual.

What’s new and exciting for this year is the locale: San Juan, Puerto Rico, which hasn’t hosted a WWE premium live event in 18 years. Music superstar Bad Bunny, one of Puerto Rico’s favorite sons, had been advertised as the host of the event, but as you’ll see below, he’s since abandoned that position in favor of a more active role, to say the least.

The card will also be boosted by some returning talent. Matt Riddle has been back on TV after missing several months due to a reported suspension (and entering rehab), and got thrown right into the fire. He’ll join tag team champs/best buddies Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn to even the odds against the Bloodline side of The Usos and Solo Sikoa.

Speaking of the Bloodline, Roman Reigns looks to be sitting Backlash out, but that’s because he has someone else handling his top challenger. Cody Rhodes wanted a rematch for Reigns’ Undisputed WWE Universal Championship but instead got ambushed by Brock Lesnar on Raw. Those two men will now do battle in San Juan in an encounter that could serve as the main event.

The crowd is almost guaranteed to be super hot after not hosting an event of this magnitude for so long. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for Backlash.

WWE SmackDown results: The Usos can’t win their rematch against Sami Zayn, KO

The Usos let the Tribal Chief down in their tag team title rematch.

Paul Heyman tells The Usos before they head for the ring that he and Solo Sikoa are staying behind because the Tribal Chief wants the spotlight on Jey and Jimmy. But he also has Solo tape up his Samoan Spike thumb, so … that’s worth filing away.

The Usos certainly look extremely motivated, simply overwhelming the champs and dropping Kevin Owens with superkicks before covering him for two. After a commercial break, the challengers continue to work over KO’s left knee, which Sikoa weakened last week.

Sami Zayn still hasn’t been the legal man and is anxious to receive a tag, and Owens manages to drag Jimmy into the post and leap to make that tag. Zayn and Jey take each other down with elbow shots before both Usos are sent to the floor. Sami wants to fly and does it with a tope con hilo.

A sunset flip powerbomb on Jey gets Sami a two count, and another follows after a Blue Thunder Bomb.

Owens tags back in after commercials and hits the cannonball on Jimmy. They fight up to the top turnbuckle, where KO delivers a fisherman’s buster. He hops to the other top rope and hits the Swanton Bomb, but Jimmy manages to kick out.

Heyman is shown getting a call from Roman Reigns and tells Solo “that was the call, tonight is your night.”

Meanwhile, Zayn slingshots himself to the floor and right into a Jey superkick. Owens stuns Jimmy but can only get two as the pace stays high.

Sikoa makes his way out but is neutralized by Matt Riddle. Owens is barely able to kick out as he absorbs more offense from Jey. The Usos have KO lined up for a double superkick, and Zayn is blasted off the apron as well. Jimmy covers but Owens manages to kick out yet again.

Another superkick leads to another near fall, yet Owens is able to keep fighting through it. The Usos signal for the 1-D, but Zayn pops back up to take care of Jey while Jimmy eats a Stunner. Sami follows with a Helluva Kick and the champs retain.

WWE SmackDown results: WWE Draft begins, The Usos come up short

Yes, the WWE Draft begins tonight, but there’s also a huge tag team title rematch in store in Corpus Christi.

It’s time to get those picks in. WWE SmackDown is hitting Corpus Christi tonight, and it’s bringing the 2023 WWE Draft with it.

Triple H has promised that this year’s draft will truly “change the game,” and assuming he wasn’t just trying to get in one more pun involving his nickname from his wrestling days, we’re looking forward to how things will get shaken up.

That’s far from the only big thing happening during this week’s SmackDown, however. There’s also the not so little matter of a rematch for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship, one now held by Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn following their dramatic victory at WrestleMania 39 earlier this month.

The Usos have a chance to get their gold back, but what happens if they fail? Jey and Jimmy dedicated the match to their Tribal Chief, but if they come up short, they’re likely to face his wrath — especially since Paul Heyman has let them know Roman Reigns is already losing patience with them.

(As an aside, The Usos can also be drafted separately from Reigns and Solo Sikoa, which is something to keep an eye on over the next few days.)

The other notable match promoted ahead of tonight’s show will see Zelina Vega take on Sonya Deville. Vega bravely called for a title shot against Rhea Ripley at Backlash and got what she asked for, but now the hard work begins. She’ll be looking to get a dub against Deville to make sure she heads to Puerto Rico with some momentum.

What else do you need to get psyched for this Friday’s show? Probably not much, we’d wager.

  • The Usos double down on dedicating their championship rematch to Reigns, but are joined on stage by Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn and everyone agrees the time for talking is over
  • LA Knight def. Butch by pinfall

  • Rob Van Dam (Raw) and Michael Hayes (SmackDown) come out to the podiums to read the next two rounds of WWE Draft picks
  • The Street Profits (who are headed to SmackDown) still want the smoke

  • Teddy Long (Raw) and JBL (SmackDown) come out to announce the Round 3 draft picks

  • Zelina gets props from Santos Escobar and Rey Mysterio, with Rey telling her not to worry about what anyone else thinks of her chances at Backlash
  • The O.C. heads to the ring, including the returning AJ Styles, are confronted by the Viking Raiders and Valhalla, and Styles ducks out of the way so there’s an even six-person brawl, and The O.C. quickly wins it … and Styles delivers a Phenomenal Forearm for good measure
  • Road Dogg (Raw) and Shawn Michaels (SmackDown) hit the stage to make the fourth and final round of WWE Draft picks for the night
  • Isla Dawn and Alba Fyre are interviewed after being selected for SmackDown but get challenged for their titles before they leave NXT

WWE SmackDown preview: WWE Draft Night One, tag team title rematch

The WWE Draft begins, and a big rematch sees The Usos try to win back the tag team titles.

It feels like everyone’s talking about the draft: who got picked, Will Levis sitting in the green room all night, and … What’s that? You say that was the NFL Draft? Oh dear.

Well good news, everyone! The WWE Draft is actually getting underway tonight on SmackDown. And just like its football counterpart, the pro wrestling version is set to have its fair share of intrigue thanks to the draft lists released for each night.

There will be other things tonight on SmackDown as well, so let’s look at the top three reasons to watch the show from Corpus Christi, Texas.

Where will Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns go on Night One of the WWE Draft?

This stands out as the biggest question from the first night. Cody Rhodes is slated to face Brock Lesnar in less than two weeks at Backlash, but his real goal is to “finish the story” and defeat Roman Reigns. For the best storytelling possibilities, they need to end up on the same show. Since both are on the draft list for SmackDown, we’ll see if that ends up the case tonight.

The Usos get their rematch against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

The Usos won’t learn their WWE Draft fate until Raw. But it’s possible they won’t want to go to the same show as their Bloodline brethren if they fail to reclaim the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship from Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn on Friday night. They dedicated their match to the Tribal Chief, and as Zayn reminded them, if they don’t win … oh boy.

With Rhea Ripley looming, Zelina Vega takes on Sonya Deville

Zelina Vega is shooting her shot at Backlash, taking on the toughest possible challenge by trying to dethrone SmackDown Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley. She might want to have the LWO on standby to watch her back tonight, because Sonya Deville is likely to have tag team partner Chelsea Green watching hers.

WWE SmackDown airs at 8 p.m. ET tonight on Fox, and we’ll have live results for both the show and the WWE Draft here on Wrestling Junkie.

WWE SmackDown results: Matt Riddle falls to Bloodline numbers game

Two title matches, plus Matt Riddle vs. Solo Sikoa in a No DQ match, highlight this week’s SmackDown from Columbus. We give you live updates.

The WWE SmackDown show rolls into Columbus tonight, and what it’s bringing with it is gold. Championship gold, to be precise, with a pair of title matches headlining the card.

Gunther has been dismissive of the threat to his Intercontinental Championship reign that Xavier Woods poses, to say the least. Can the lone currently healthy member of The New Day forcefully make him change his mind, or will the Ring General be proven correct?

In contrast to Gunther, Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez have only just begun (shout out to the Carpenters) their run as Women’s Tag Team Champions. Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville would love to end things just as they’re getting started, and if they fail, they’re sure to let us all hear about it later.

Also poor Adam Pearce, naturally.

The other match WWE has promoted for tonight has no belts on the line, but it might be even more contentious. Braun Strowman and Ricochet have had a bit of a rivalry going the past few weeks with the Viking Raiders, but it got ratcheted up several notches last week when the Raiders jumped them on SmackDown. Payback time? One would think.

Those bouts won’t be enough to fill two full hours, so there’s going to be more. WWE recently said we can expect a tag team match pitting The LWO’s Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar against The Judgment Day’s Damian Priest and Finn Balor. And there will be a No DQ match between Matt Riddle and Solo Sikoa that could possibly be the main event, even with two title matches on the show.

WWE SmackDown results from Columbus:

(click on match links for more details)

  • Damian Priest and Finn Balor def. Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar by pinfall
  • Solo Sikoa and The Usos are shown entering the arena
  • Zelina Vega tells Adam Pearce she wants to challenge Rhea Ripley for her SmackDown Women’s Championship at Backlash, and he seems agreeable

  • A video promotes Shinsuke Nakamura as the King of Strong Style, followed by a warning to him from Karrion Kross, who claims he will take away Shinsuke’s honor
  • Braun Strowman and Ricochet def. Viking Raiders by pinfall thanks to the fan favorite Swanton Bomb by Ricochet off Strowman’s shoulders
  • Raquel Rodriguez has to calm down Liv Morgan before their title defense
  • Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez def. Chelsea Green and Sonya Deville by pinfall to retain the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, giving the heels a taste of their own medicine in the process
  • Matt Riddle promises to leave Solo Sikoa buried tonight
  • Gunther def. Xavier Woods by submission to retain the WWE Intercontinental Championship
  • A video package shows once again how Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn became tag team champions
  • The Usos cut a promo about their rematch against KO and Sami next week and say they’re going to dedicate their victory to the Tribal Chief, which … they better hope they win
  • Solo Sikoa def. Matt Riddle by pinfall in a No Disqualification match with some help from The Usos, who give Riddle a 1-D through a table after the bell

WWE Backlash 2023: Here’s what the rumored card looks like 3 weeks out

No matches are official yet for WWE Backlash in Puerto Rico, but here are a few said to be taking shape.

After the long road to WrestleMania, it’s always kind of a shock when WWE Backlash, the next premium live event, comes up so suddenly. It’s like the ultimate proof that the show just keeps rolling on in WWE.

We’re now just about three weeks away from this year’s show, which will take place at the the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Locally it will be a huge deal as it’s the first WWE show on the island in more than a decade.

Adding to the big time feel will be the presence of Bad Bunny, one of the most popular recording artists in the world and a Puerto Rican native, as host of the event. It also looks increasingly possible that he’ll be on the card as well, which would be his first WWE match in more than a year.

We don’t know yet because to date there have been zero matches officially announced for Backlash. That should change quickly over the next week or so, but thanks to Dave Meltzer in his latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), there’s a good idea of what will eventually be promoted for the event.

Let’s take a quick spin through the rumored card.

Brock Lesnar vs. Cody Rhodes

This is almost certain to be the main event, with Cody Rhodes laying down the challenge this week on Raw. The question is whether Brock Lesnar will simply steamroll him, which is what some seem to think will happen as WWE plays up the adversity angle for Rhodes, or if he will bounce back from his WrestleMania disappointment.

Bad Bunny and Rey Mysterio vs. Damian Priest and Dominik Mysterio

We had really hoped the storyline between Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio would have ended after their match at WrestleMania since, you know, that’s usually where long-running programs end. Alas, Dom went right back to calling Rey a deadbeat dad again, and here we are. Bad Bunny got involved in that match by preventing Dominik from using a steel chair, and Damian Priest has come to Dom’s aid. There’s an extra twist in that Priest was Bunny’s partner for his first ever WWE match, long before Damian joined The Judgment Day.

Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn and Matt Riddle vs. The Usos and Solo Sikoa

It’s possible that without the flight delays that forced a rewrite of this week’s Raw that this matchup would be even further along toward being finalized. Matt Riddle has immediately become an ally to the tag team champions against the Bloodline since his return, so this is a logical showdown for all involved. On top of that, it allows Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn to face The Usos again without having the tag team titles at stake so soon after their dramatic championship bout at WrestleMania.

Bianca Belair vs. IYO SKY – WWE Raw Women’s Championship match

IYO SKY won a triple threat match to earn a shot at this title, potentially sowing the seeds for a Damage CTRL breakup as Bayley gave up the spot for her and might have regrets about doing so. Meltzer says this could also be on Raw and not at Backlash, but it would be great to see SKY get a solo spotlight on a bigger card.

Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus

It’s more a matter of when rather than if Becky Lynch will get her chance for some payback after Trish Stratus first cost her the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship then attacked her from behind after the match. While their program could run all the way to SummerSlam, Meltzer suggests there could be an initial bout between them in San Juan.

WWE Raw results: Cody challenges Brock, KO fights on one leg but not alone

Live WWE Raw results for April 10, 2023 in Seattle, with Cody Rhodes addressing the fallout from his assault by Brock Lesnar last week.

Poor Cody Rhodes. All he wanted to do was to keep fighting those mean jerks in the Bloodline, and it seemed like he even had a strong new friend to help him do it last week on Raw.

Then Brock Lesnar viciously attacked him, proving that even though there was a happy go lucky Cowboy Brock under his mean jerk exterior, there was, in fact, another mean jerk underneath Cowboy Brock. Who knew?

Since Roman Reigns doesn’t seem inclined to give Rhodes the rematch he wants, Cody now has to probably do a program with Brock. The good news is that Lesnar doesn’t work every week. The bad news is that, well, when you get in the ring with Lesnar, you have to get in the ring with Lesnar. Suplex City and all that.

Anyway, the fallout from that attack is supposed to go down tonight in Seattle, whatever that turns out to be.

You may also be interested to know that there’s a tag team title match slated for this episode of Raw. Becky Lynch and Lita were two-thirds of a winning team at WrestleMania 39, but now they’ve got to settle in and start defending their championship. They’ll take the first stab at that tonight against Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez, who should at the very least compete against them in a straightforward and respectful manner.

Earlier today, WWE also promoted this episode as the in-ring return of Matt Riddle against The Miz, but that match is no longer mentioned in the preview on the company’s website, so we’re assuming it got scrapped for some reason.

That leaves a lot of time to fill with other stuff, so we’ll just have to wait and see what else is in store. Tune in to USA at 8 p.m. ET to watch, or pop back in here as we Wrestle Junkies keep you up to date with the latest WWE Raw results as they take place.

WWE Raw results in 90 seconds:

  • Rey Mysterio gets into another argument with Dominik, who declines a WrestleMania rematch in favor of watching Finn Balor battle his dad

  • Cathy Kelley is talking to Alpha Academy backstage when the scene shifts to Lita, who has been attacked by someone
  • Video is played of Brock Lesnar’s attack on Cody Rhodes last week on Raw
  • Becky Lynch says she has her suspicions about who may have attacked Lita and will slap the head off them when she finds out for sure; she’s also drafting Trish Stratus to help defend the tag team titles tonight
  • Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez def. Becky Lynch and Trish Stratus by pinfall to become the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, and Stratus attacks Lynch after the match
  • Paul Heyman doesn’t want to talk about Lesnar, but would like to discuss Kevin Owens and how he’s in trouble against Solo Sikoa tonight with no allies or friends
  • Stratus refuses a question backstage from Byron Saxton about her actions

  • Cody Rhodes addresses the Brock Lesnar situation by challenging him to a match at Backlash

WWE Raw After WrestleMania results: One Beast of a surprise for Cody Rhodes

What surprises are in store after WrestleMania 39? Get live Raw After WrestleMania results here.

If there’s ever an episode of its flagship show that WWE wants to play close to the vest, the Raw After WrestleMania is it. On the heels of an eventful and emotional two-night WrestleMania at SoFi Stadium, the scene shifts to Crypto.com Arena for tonight’s show.

And it promises to be more packed than usual, because WWE announced that the first hour will be commercial-free. Will we see NXT promotions? Stars returning after long absences? A certain Catalyst, perhaps? We’ll have to wait and see.

WWE has literally said nothing else about what to expect, so let’s do some speculation. First and foremost, there’s the matter of Cody Rhodes. The American Nightmare went into WrestleMania confident and with the vast majority of the WWE Universe behind him to achieve his destiny … and lost.

Since it took the entire Bloodline to defeat him, maybe Rhodes isn’t completely crestfallen. But he’ll have to pick himself up and try to move forward, and that likely starts tonight.

Bianca Belair had a more successful outing on Sunday night, turning away a tough challenge from Asuka to remain the Raw Women’s Champion. We could learn what’s next for The EST of WWE in L.A. as well.

Plus we know Bad Bunny will be on hand tonight. The music superstar played a small but pivotal role on night 1 of WrestleMania, preventing Dominik Mysterio from using a chain on his father. Bad Bunny will be the host of Backlash, the next WWE premium live event, but perhaps there’s even more in store for him on Raw.

There’s bound to be much more, but just like you, we’re going to have to watch to see exactly what it is. That means tuning to USA at 8 p.m. ET (and getting all your bathroom breaks in ahead of time, thanks to the no commercials) or keeping it locked here at Wrestling Junkie for us to hit you with live Raw After WrestleMania results all evening.

WWE Raw After WrestleMania results in 90 seconds:

  • Triple H takes a WrestleMania 39 victory lap and assures everyone that the sale to Endeavor changes nothing
  • He then brings out Roman Reigns, quickly joined by Cody Rhodes; Cody wants a rematch, but instead ends up with a tag team match — with Brock Lesnar as his partner
  • Omos def. Elias by pinfall
  • The Usos stop by to see Reigns, but Heyman says he’s stepped out and that Jimmy and Jey can hit the jet for seafood; Paul can be heard saying “I took care of it” as he returns to the locker room
  • A video package shows highlights from the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony Friday night
  • Bad Bunny promotes Backlash in Puerto Rico and says he’s happy to be enjoying tonight’s show as a fan … hmm …
  • Rey Mysterio wants to take time to thank the WWE Universe, but he’s interrupted by Austin Theory, who’s feeling good about his victory over John Cena and wants a piece of another legend
  • Austin Theory def. Rey Mysterio by pinfall after interference by Dominik Mysterio, who teams with Damian Priest to attack Rey and send Bad Bunny through the announce table after the match
  • Adam Pearce is going after Priest, who asks why AP didn’t have the same energy when Bad Bunny interfered at Mania
  • The new champs are here, and while Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens deserve the love they’re getting, the Street Profits still want to fight them
  • Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens def. Street Profits by pinfall
  • Seth Rollins brags about sending Logan Paul and KSI back to the cesspool of social media, and he’s ready to hear the people sing his song … so he does, and then leaves
  • Bobby Lashley says he has a lot of pent-up frustration, and the taunting he’s getting from Bronson Reed isn’t going to help; this probably isn’t the best time for Mustafa Ali to put his two cents in …
  • Bobby Lashley def. Mustafa Ali by submission
  • Reigns asks Heyman if he knew Lesnar would be here, and is not happy that it happened, but he’s determined to prevail tonight
  • What’s next for Bianca Belair? Not Rhea Ripley, not yet, though the two champs tease a match to see who’s the best of the best somewhere down the line
  • Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez def. Damage CTRL (Dakota Kai and IYO SKY) by pinfall to earn a WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship match
  • The Miz opens his mouth unwisely again, gets beaten up by a returning Matt Riddle
  • Becky Lynch, Lita and Trish Stratus are still riding the high from their WrestleMania victory and are glad to have Damage CTRL behind them … but is there something off with Trish?
  • There is no main event, just an ass kicking, as Lesnar assaults Rhodes right after the teams are announced

Kevin Owens was the opposite of subtle trying to sneakily eat a Snickers after his tag-team win

It’s impossible to hide when on camera, and the wrapper makes a noise!

The main event of the first night of Wrestlemania 39 didn’t disappoint. (Nor did awesome earlier cameo appearances.)

A tag-team match featuring Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn squaring off against The Usos for the Tag Team Championship lived up to the hype and then some. Ultimately, Owens and Zayn would prevail after one heck of a show.

When the pair sat down to discuss their victory and its significance in the aftermath, they were surrounded by a sponsored item: various Snickers bars.

As Zayn tried to add color to the win and add additional meaning, Owens couldn’t resist. He helped himself to a Snickers right in front of his microphone. But Owens clearly didn’t want to interrupt Zayn.

So, he opened the wrapper slowly (while looking around to see who, if anyone, noticed) and took a quiet chomp while Zayn spoke.

Let’s just say everyone noticed:

Incredible. No notes. We might do the same if a candy bar just sat in front of us after an exhausting match.
