Aguero gets into scuffle as TST 2024 gets spicy

Things got heated on the first day of TST 2024

It is day one at the 2024 edition of The Soccer Tournament (TST), and things are already getting spicy.

Manchester City legend Sergio Agüero had to be separated from an opponent in a Wednesday match between Agüero Team and Say Word FC.

Agüero took exception to a heavy tackle from Say Word defender Brandon Rothfuss, who initially won the ball from the former Argentina forward before following through.

The play seemed designed to send a message, and Agüero took exception. After briefly looking to the referee for a call, the Miami resident found Rothfuss, who seemed disinterested in a chat.

Agüero delivered a chest bump, to which Rothfuss replied with a shove before the two squared up.

Say Word goalkeeper Ramius Stiehler — whose career has taken him from the U.S., to England, Spain, indoor soccer, and one cap with the American Virgin Islands — arrived as a peacemaker, while Agüero Team’s Lucas Fernandez offered the “help” of a hard shove towards Rothfuss.

While TST is not engineered to create shoving matches and an exchange of colorful language — it is, in fact, a seven-on-seven soccer tournament with a $1 million prize for the winner — this kind of moment will pretty much only ever happen at the TST.

Where else would a player for the Memphis Americans (an on-hiatus pro indoor soccer team playing in the National Indoor Soccer League) end up in a heated argument with the scorer of one of the most famous goals in modern soccer, on a major streaming platform?

And where else would a team comprised largely of ex-college players take down a team featuring literally Sergio Agüero? Once the scuffle was halted, Say Word got the last laugh, knocking off Agüero Team 6-3.

Pat McAfee and the incredibly named The Concafa SC are in for TST 2024

The ESPN host said he’s calling in some old friends to build his roster, which will be “stacked”

Pat McAfee has confirmed he is joining the growing field at the 2024 edition of The Soccer Tournament (TST).

The ESPN media personality announced the move on his show Wednesday during a segment with JJ Watt, who had only just confirmed his participation earlier in the day.

McAfee said he had “made some calls to some old friends” in building his team, which would be “stacked,” and that he’d be releasing the roster next week.

The ESPN host did confirm his team’s coach, which will be U.S. men’s national team legend Tony Meola.

And the name of that team? “The Concafa Soccer Club.”

The moniker originates from McAfee’s interview with Thierry Henry in February, during which the former NFL punter (deliberately?) butchers the name of Concacaf.

TST, a 7v7 tournament with a $1 million winner-take-all prize, will be held for the second time in 2024. Unlike last year, there will be separate tournaments for men and women, with each winning team taking home $1 million.

TST will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC from June 5-10, with ESPN broadcasting select matches.

Burnley’s high-profile co-owners are ready to test themselves on the field.

JJ and Kealia Watt will both play for Burnley in the 2024 edition of The Soccer Tournament (TST), a 7v7 event with a $1 million winner-take-all prize.

Burnley will enter a team in both the men’s and women’s division of the tournament, with the NFL legend and the ex-NWSL star set to captain their respective sides.

“It’s really exciting for both Kealia and I to headline Burnley FC’s men’s and women’s teams at TST,” JJ Watt said in a statement. “We’ve called some friends and are planning on bringing the best teams we can to compete. We are both highly competitive individuals, so we’ll be giving it our all in claret and blue!”

The couple announced last May that they had become investors in Burnley.

Kealia Watt added: “We’re delighted to announce our involvement in TST. Having the opportunity to represent Burnley on the pitch and compete against clubs from around the globe will be incredibly special.

“I’m also looking forward to making history with the inaugural women’s Tournament. This is an important addition and I’m pleased to see TST’s commitment to an equal prize for the winning men’s and women’s teams. I’m looking forward to playing in the Burnley shirt and reuniting with some of my former teammates.”

This year’s TST will feature an eight-team women’s tournament and a 48-team men’s tournament, with the winner of each competition taking home $1 million.

Other notable figures confirmed to be involved in this year’s tournament include Sergio Agüero, Nani, Mario Balotelli, Ali Krieger, Heather O’Reilly and more.

Man City legend Aguero set to play in TST 2024

Man City’s all-time leading scorer will lead Agüero Team at the 7v7 tournament

Sergio Agüero is coming out of retirement — sort of.

The Manchester City and Argentina legend has announced he will play in the 2024 edition of The Soccer Tournament (TST), a 7v7 event with a $1 million winner-take-all prize.

The 35-year-old will lead Agüero Team, which will be debuting Man City’s new 2024-25 kit during the event in Cary, North Carolina.

“We are ecstatic to welcome Sergio and his team to this year’s field,” said TST founder and CEO Jon Mugar. “Not only is he one of the best players of all time, but he’s also one of the fiercest competitors ever. He’s coming to Cary to have fun and compete, which is exactly what TST is all about.”

This year’s TST will feature an eight-team women’s tournament and a 48-team men’s tournament, with the winner of each competition taking home $1 million.

In addition to Agüero, Nani and Mario Balotelli have also both confirmed their participation in this year’s TST, with the pair set to play for Nani FC. The women’s event will again feature US Women, which will be led by former U.S. women’s national team star Heather O’Reilly.

On Thursday, USWNT legend Ali Krieger also announced she will be joining US Women.

“I told [O’Reilly] that I’m only signing up if we win,” Krieger said on ESPN’s Fútbol Americas. “I’m very happy to be playing in front of the fans, supporters, and some family members again. It should be really fun!”

The tournament will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park from June 5-10, with ESPN broadcasting select matches.

Newtown Pride FC wins The Soccer Tournament, $1 million prize

The amateur side from Connecticut defeated SLC FC in the winner-take-all final

Newtown Pride FC has won the inaugural edition of The Soccer Tournament, defeating SLC FC 2-0 in the $1 million winner-take-all final.

The 7v7 tournament featured 32 teams from eight different countries, with plenty of big names involved.

But it was Newtown Pride, an amateur club based in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, who took home the title featuring a team filled predominantly with players from the Major Arena Soccer League.

Newtown lost its first game of the tournament before bouncing back to win its final two group games. In the knockout phase the team got past the DMV Diplomats, Hapoel Tel Aviv, and Sneaky Fox FC before its victory in the final.

SLC FC, filled with players from the Canadian Futsal National Team and League1 Ontario, opted to sit back and absorb pressure in the final, looking to hit Newtown on the break.

But Newtown grew increasingly threatening in the second half. With five minutes left to play, the pressure finally told. Gabriel Costa worked his way into prime shooting range and riffled a low drive to make it 1-0.

The game entered Target Score Time at 1-0, with Newtown needing one goal to win and SLC needing two.

Newtown continued to pressure and Kelvin Nunes would eventually score the $1 million goal after some intricate passing in the box.

Dallas United player denies racism charges after TST incident vs. West Ham

“I did not use a racist slur towards anyone,” said David Ortiz

A Dallas United player has denied using a racial slur in a match against West Ham at The Soccer Tournament.

A match between the two teams on the first day of the competition was suspended amid allegations of a player directing a racial slur at a West Ham player.

An investigation by tournament organizers concluded that Dallas United violated TST’s code of conduct. After speaking to representatives from both teams, the decision was taken for Dallas United to withdraw from the tournament.

The Dallas United player who was alleged to have used the slur was not named, but now David Ortiz has made a statement on Instagram confirming he is the player in question and denying the charges.

“Racism has never been condoned in my household and it goes without saying that I stand against racism in any shape or form,” Ortiz said on his Instagram story. “I did not use a racist slur towards anyone, and it pains me to have my legacy tarnished in this way.”

Ortiz, 22, came up through the FC Dallas academy before playing professionally in Spain and Colombia. Most recently he’s played in the MASL indoor league and with the U.S. futsal national team.

TST game involving West Ham suspended amid racial slur allegations

Organizers halted play after allegations that a Dallas United player used a slur

The first day of The Soccer Tournament was marred by allegations that a player used a racial slur.

A match in Group D between Dallas United and a team representing West Ham was halted, with the latter side walking off over the alleged racial slur. The game was suspended pending an investigation from tournament organizers.

“The match between West Ham United and Dallas United has been suspended pending an investigation into allegations of use or intent to use a racial slur,” said a statement from TST. “TST has zero tolerance towards racial abuse, and take these allegations very seriously. After speaking with players and coaches from both teams, officials, and consulting audio from our production team, TST will issue the results of its investigation.”

TST’s roster page for Dallas United bills the team as “a unique partnership” between Twitch streamer Castro_1021 and Dallas Soccer Alliance, an adult soccer league in the greater Dallas area.

West Ham’s team is comprised almost entirely of ex-pros who played for West Ham at some point in their careers, including Luis Boa Morte, Carlton Cole, Marlon Harewood, and Tyrone Mears.

It was not immediately clear what sanctions TST would pose should the investigation confirm the use of racist language

Edit note: Dallas United has since withdrawn from the tournament.

Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Heather O’Reilly and plenty more will play in the 7v7 event

The Soccer Tournament has unveiled its official 32-team field and group pairings, with several big names from the game’s past and present set to take part.

The $1 million winner-take-all event will take place from June 1-4 in Cary, North Carolina, and will feature teams from all over the world competing in 7v7 matches.

TST is based off The Basketball Tournament, a similar event that has featured ex-pros and celebrities.

The field will be split into eight groups of four teams each, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage. The groups are as follows:

Group A: Borussia Dortmund, Hoosiers Army (Indiana Alumni), Kingdom FC, Newtown Pride FC

Group B: Wolverhampton, Blade & Grass FC, Villita FC, DMV Diplomats

Group C: Club Necaxa, Hapoel Tel Aviv, SLC FC, Virginia Dream

Group D: West Ham, Dallas United, Culture by Mo Ali FC, Far East United

Borussia Dortmund

The German giants are in Group A and will feature club legends like goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller as well as social media influencer Noah Beck.

Blade & Grass FC

The Group B side will include the ex-USMNT duo of Geoff Cameron and Brek Shea, as well as other players with Premier League experience yet to be announced.

West Ham

The Hammers are placed in Group D and will bring a roster with some of the club’s past greats, including Carlton Cole, Marlon Harewood and Matt Jarvis.

Wrexham Red Dragons

The newly minted League Two side owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will field a team full of names that viewers of “Welcome to Wrexham” will recognize.

Como 1907

Joining Wrexham in Group E will be the Serie B side whose ownership group includes Cesc Fabregas and Thierry Henry. Fabregas will participate in TST as a player-coach.

US Women

One of the most prominent teams in the tournament will be US Women, which will be led by ex-USWNT stars Heather O’Reilly, Lori Lindsey, Kristine Lilly, and Cat Whitehill. The team’s coaching staff will include Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers, and Heather Mitts.

Conrad & Beasley United

Conrad & Beasley United will be led by, you guessed it, Jimmy Conrad and DaMarcus Beasley. The former will participate in a player-assistant coach role while the latter will be general manager. Their roster also features MLS legend Dwayne De Rosario.

Team Dempsey

Clint Dempsey will serve as coach of Team Dempsey, which will feature two of his former USMNT teammates in Eddie Johnson and Jermaine Jones.

Clint Dempsey, Chris Paul back new winner-take-all soccer tournament with $1 million prize

The Soccer Tournament hopes to mimic the success of its basketball counterpart

North Carolina will play host to a new, winner-take-all soccer tournament featuring a $1 million prize and some big-name backers.

U.S. men’s national team legend Clint Dempsey and NBA star Chris Paul are among the group behind what will be called The Soccer Tournament. The event — set to take place in June 2023 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC — will be run by TBT Enterprises, the founders of a very similar concept called The Basketball Tournament.

“TST is an opportunity for players to show what they’ve got,” said Dempsey, who will coach a team, in a press release. “I came from the pickup culture, and we’ll be on the search for unproven talent that may have been overlooked by the American soccer system. Don’t sleep on Team Dempsey, we’re coming to win.”

Don’t expect a traditional game

Dempsey’s team will be one of 32 entrants, with a familiar group-stage format coming first. 16 teams will advance to a knockout round. Games will be played on a seven-on-seven format with field dimensions no larger than 65 yards by 45 yards, and with slightly smaller (18.5′ x 6.5′) goals.

“They wanted something that was going to be exciting, something that was going to be a lot of action that was going to be a lot of goals, exciting for people to watch,” said Dempsey on the tight confines. “By being closer to goal, it allows for more opportunities to get a shot. I like that aspect of it. You still have to defend, and you’ve still got to work on being tight with your touches.”

One innovation from The Basketball Tournament that will be ported over for soccer is what on the hoops side is called the Elam Ending. In that format, the traditional fourth quarter is played without a clock, and seven points are added to the leading team’s score. Whichever side gets to that point total wins the game, with no possibility of overtime.

In The Soccer Tournament, games will be played in two 20-minute halves, and at the end of regulation the clock will turn off, and what is being called “Target Score Time” will begin.

For the team in the lead, it’s effectively a next goal wins scenario, while the trailing team has a chance to mount a comeback by scoring enough goals to make up their deficit, plus one more to get to the target score. If no one scores in the first five minutes of “Target Score Time,” the game will become six-on-six, and so on until someone bags the goal that gets their team to the, you guessed it, target score.

Dempsey’s team — which will hold tryouts in multiple states, and could even include Dempsey as a player-coach — will be joined by Hashtag United, a semi-professional club that plays traditional soccer in the eighth tier of the English pyramid. Entry fees will range from $10,000 to $20,000, depending on when a team applies, and will also be subject to a tournament selection committee process.

“Ultimately, we want to pick the field that people most want to see,” TBT founder Jon Mugar said. “As we look at all the teams that will apply for a 32-team, million-dollar tournament, we’re definitely going to prioritize those that represent a wide cross-section of the soccer world. And I think that with basketball, we’ve seen that it’s mainly a product for USA players, but with soccer we anticipate a worldwide player pool.”

The Basketball Tournament eventually worked its way to ESPN broadcasts, and included a range of teams including NCAA alumni teams from top programs, groups coached by Paul and fellow NBA star DeMarcus Cousins, as well as an appearance from the Pistol Shrimps, a women’s rec league team made up of actresses (including Aubrey Plaza for a spell), models, and other Hollywood-oriented professions. What began as a 32-team competition for a $500,000 prize has become an annual 64-team tournament with, like the soccer version, a $1 million award for the champions.
