How to watch Tiger Woods, Charlie Woods and the 2022 PNC Championship

The 2022 edition of the event features golfers who have claimed 73 major titles.

It seems like it’s getting bigger every year.

The PNC Championship started in 1995 with ten major championship winners teaming up with their sons.

Now, the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando, Grande Lakes will host 20 teams. Eligibility qualifications are steep: Players must have a major championship or a Players Championship title on their resume, while their partner must not hold a PGA or LPGA Tour card.

The 2022 edition of the event has golfers who have won a major dating back to 1959. In all, the field has golfers who claimed 73 major titles.

Jordan Spieth plans on playing in the PNC Championship in December with dad, Shawn

This would mark the first time Spieth plays in the PNC.

Jordan Spieth is winding down for the year. He had a great week at Quail Hollow Club for the Presidents Cup, going 5-0-0 including a Sunday singles win over Cam Davis.

Now, with no big events for the next few months, time will tell how often we see Spieth on the course before 2023. However, he did reveal part of his plan to Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz on SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio Tuesday.

The 29-year-old said he’s planning on playing in the PNC Championship in December with his dad, Shawn. It would be his first appearance in the family affair.

The PNC is scheduled for December 17-18 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida.

The full field has yet to be announced, but it’s expected to include Justin Thomas and his dad, Mike; John Daly and his son, John II; and Tiger Woods and his son, Charlie. The Dalys won last year.

For a player to be eligible for the field, they have to be a major champion.

PNC Championship: Tiger Woods, son Charlie wow the crowd, but John Daly, son John II win

And you thought Tiger Woods’ son Charlie stole the show at last year’s PNC Championship.

And you thought Charlie Woods stole the show a year ago at the PNC Championship.

Believe it or not, he did himself one better this time around, much to the delight of his teammate and dad Tiger Woods.

Team Woods sported the Sunday red at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando for the final round. Did we expect anything else?

Then Tiger and Charlie went out and joined in the Sunday birdie-fest at the silly season, hit-n-giggle event.

The Woods opened birdie-birdie-eagle and then put together a remarkable run of 11 straight birdies starting on No. 7. The shot of the day came off the tee shot by Charlie on the par-3 17th, a tricky hole with water down the left side. Charlie stuffed it to about six feet, much to the delight of the fans and commentators alike.

Charlie then drained the putt to get the team to 25 under and a tie for the lead. The 11 birdies in a row was a tournament record.

But moments later, John Daly stuffed his approach shot to about three feet on the 16th hole. He then made the birdie putt to nudge back his team ahead by a shot at 26 under. John was playing with his son John Daly II, who plays college golf at Arkansas and sported the Razorbacks logo on his shirt and hat Sunday.

On 18, needing an eagle, Charlie went into a bunker and Tiger rolled off the green to the right. They went with Tiger’s lie and each chipped aggressively, trying for eagle, but each missed and then they each missed their birdie tries. A closing par gave them a 57 and left them at 25 under, a shot back.

“What a blast,” Tiger told Golf Channel after the round. “We had a blast all day.”

Tiger said Team Woods had a goal of no bogeys this year and the team accomplished that goal.

“We got on a run, which was great, and Charlie was making some putts.”

[vertical-gallery id=778191616]

Team Daly made par on the 17th to keep a one-shot lead. On 18, John and John II closed it out with a birdie to win by two. The 27-under finish is a tournament record.

John won five times on the PGA Tour and his last win anywhere was at the 2017 Insperity Invitational on the PGA Tour Champions.

Stewart Cink and son Reagan were right with Tiger and Charlie throughout the day but like the Woods, couldn’t quite close the gap on the Dalys. The Cinks finished 24 under. Defending champs Justin Thomas and father Mike shot a 60 and also finished 24 under.

Nelly Korda, the top-ranked women’s golfer in the world, teamed up with her father Petr to shoot 63-64 to post 17 under and finish 12th.

Watch: John Daly as Santa Claus at the PNC Championship banquet is both festive and hilarious

‘Twas the night before the PNC Championship and all through an Orlando-area banquet hall …

‘Twas the night before the PNC Championship and all through an Orlando-area banquet hall … not a golfer, family member or staffer was able to keep a straight face when Long John arrived.

John Daly stole the show at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Grande Lakes in Orlando on Friday night, using his snow-white facial hair and ample belly to produce a spot-on St. Nicholas that spread holiday cheer as well as a few adult beverages.

Daly is part of what’s certain to be an entertaining field at this weekend’s event, one which was originally called the Father-Son Challenge. It has since expanded to include pro golfers and a parent or child. One prerequisite is that each group has a major championship winner.

PNC: Saturday tee times | How to watch

When he’s not playing Santa Claus, Daly can proudly boast two — the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open — and he’ll be paired with his son, budding golfer John Daly II. If the elder Daly had any ill effects after Friday’s festivities, he’s had plenty of time to sleep them off — he’s not due on the first tee until 12:06.

Here’s a look at Daly’s fun Friday:

Tiger Woods tees it up publicly for first time since car crash: ‘I think he’s got alien DNA’

This day was about Tiger Woods playing in public for the first time since he nearly lost his life in a single-car crash.

[mm-video type=video id=01fq326pfm7yra2v2t6q playlist_id=01es6rjnsp3c84zkm6 player_id=01evcfxp4q8949fs1e image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fq326pfm7yra2v2t6q/01fq326pfm7yra2v2t6q-5e46ba306c38efaf87082c9a05039c82.jpg]

ORLANDO – When Bubba Watson was announced at the first tee of pro-am day at the PNC Championship, he stepped up and said, “I know you’re all here to see Matt Kuchar.”

In a 20-person field of major championship winners, Hall of Famers and some of the all-time greats, this day was about Tiger Woods playing in public for the first time since he nearly lost his life in a single-car crash in February. The image of his flipped vehicle was chilling, but here he was, playing in front of cameras with his 12-year-old son Charlie and loyal bagman Joe LaCava by his side.

Laughter ensued and when it died down, Tiger was ready with his riposte: “Are you going to hit a cut…or a cut?” Woods asked.

“I’ll tell you in a second,” Bubba said as he hit one of his patented left-to-right benders.

With the sun bursting bright and not a cloud in the sky above the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Tiger soon put tee in ground and began the latest chapter in a career with more comebacks than a professional boxer.

PNC: How to watch | Saturday tee times | The teams

“I think he’s got alien DNA,” said Notah Begay III, Tiger’s college teammate at Stanford and a member of the Golf Channel/NBC broadcast team. “His ability to repair not just physically, but mentally and emotionally is second to none. I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like this in sports.”

Tiger was back playing the game he’s made look easy en route to winning 15 major titles and a spot in the World Golf Hall of Fame next March. After all he’s been through, Tiger’s smile as he engaged with his son had to be the highlight of the day.

“It was an awesome day,” Tiger said. “It was just awesome to be back out here playing and being out there with my son, and we just had an absolute blast.”

There was a bit of a hitch in the old war horse’s giddy-up. Somewhere between a limp and a hobble, but Tiger, who turns 46 on Dec. 30, got around well enough with use of a golf cart, bending over with one leg to pick up his tee and fetch his ball from the hole, and even that of his pro-am partners. He said this was only the second or third round of golf he’s been able to play so he lacks the endurance he needs to consider a return to PGA Tour events, and reiterated that he was a long way off from returning to competitive golf. To conserve energy for the next few days, Tiger shut it down early, hitting his last tee shot at 13, second shot at 14, and simply hitting pitches, chips and putts over the final few holes.

[vertical-gallery id=778191616]

“It’s almost like he’s on a pitch count,” Begay said. “He’s got only so many swings in him each day. He knows that.”

But overall, Tiger’s performance was encouraging. When asked what his swing speed with driver was in a recent interview with Golf Digest, Tiger had cracked that it was less than Charlie’s. It may not be up to his standards, but Tiger still ripped a few drives in the neighborhood of 300 yards. He knows he can still get it around.

“You saw it out there,” Woods said. “I can hit around here, drop a ball here, hit a few wedges, do that. But to go out there and have 220 yards and know that you have to hit a 3- or 4-iron and miss the ball in the correct spot, and then hit certain shots and one stroke determines whether you win or lose, that’s a totally different mindset than what we have out here this week. I’m not there yet.”

Asked if he is amazed that he’s even playing this week, Tiger answered, “Yes and no. If you would have asked me after those three months in the bed, if I would be here, I would have given you a different answer.

“But there are no days off. We worked every day. Even days where I didn’t feel very good, we still worked on something. So every day, there was never a day off the entire, other than those three months in bed, I haven’t taken a day off.”

Watching him drain a 15-foot birdie putt at the first hole felt like old times. He still flighted wedges that made the ball stop on a dime and chipped to inches from about 100 feet on the fifth hole. Fans took turns yelling, “welcome back, Tiger,” “we missed you, Tiger,” “let’s go, Tiger.”

He wasn’t the only one given a warm welcome back.

“It’s good to be outside,” LaCava said, adding, “Hope it’s not just once a year.”

Truer words may have never been spoken.

Justin Thomas on dad, Mike, wanting to play in the PNC Championship: ‘I’m not getting any younger’

Team Thomas is paired with Tiger Woods and son Charlie in the opening round on Saturday.

ORLANDO – Justin Thomas and father Mike took a trip down memory lane, viewing a collection of old photos of Justin’s swing from as young as 1-year-old to more recent times, which were loaded on to an iPad.

Justin, who grew up to win the 2017 PGA Championship among 13 PGA Tour titles, smiled at the sight of himself whacking a golf ball with a plastic club.

“Not much has changed there,” he said.

And then there was the photo at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, which Mike identified as Justin’s 13th birthday. It had become a family tradition to play at a nine-hole course to celebrate Justin’s big day. This time, he was told that the family had to stop at Valhalla so his mother, Jani, could drop off some catalogs. When they arrived, Justin got quite the surprise with a round of golf at the home of past PGA Championships and the 2008 Ryder Cup.

“He was pretty fired up,” Mike said.

That would sum up Justin’s reaction to teaming with his father this week in the PNC Championship, a 20-team scramble competition among major champions and winners of the Players alongside a family member at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Grande Lakes Resort.

PNC ChampionshipThe field, tee times, TV times, format

The tournament, which dates to 1995, historically paired a major winner with his son or daughter. It was 2017 when Justin Leonard became the first major champion to play with his father, Larry, 76, opening the door for Thomas, and potentially the likes of Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth in the future, to play in the event formerly known as the Father-Son. Last year, Thomas played in the Presidents Cup in Australia the week before the 36-hole exhibition, so passed on the invite, but when he heard that Tiger Woods and son Charlie were considering playing, Team Thomas jumped at the opportunity.

“My dad’s exact quote was ‘I’m not getting any younger,’” said Justin, whose father is 61. “We figured let’s give it a shot and have some fun.”

Mike Thomas is pro emeritus at Harmony Landing Country Club in Goshen, Kentucky, and competed on mini tours before settling into teaching. He’s got some game, Justin says, though it may be a bit rusty.

“The biggest challenge for him is length. His game is respectable. He just doesn’t play anymore,” Justin said. “He’s going to be plenty helpful. I hope he tries to have as much fun as I do.”

Team Thomas is paired with Tiger Woods and his 11-year-old son Charlie in Saturday’s opening round. When Justin was 7 years old, he watched the final round of Tiger’s playoff victory over Bob May from the clubhouse at Valhalla at the 2000 PGA Championship. It was a moment that spurred Justin to pursue a career as a Tour pro. Justin and Tiger have formed a close friendship and teamed up at that Presidents Cup a year ago.

Among Mike Thomas’s most promising junior golfers? None other than Charlie Woods.

“Mike’s been impactful in him enjoying the sport and it’s so much fun for me to see Mike share a lot of his ways that he was able to spend with his son and we’re enjoying that,” Tiger said, noting that Mike’s been involved in Charlie’s development as a golfer “from the word go.”

For Team Thomas, it doesn’t really matter how they play this week in their tournament debut, it’s about quality father and son time competing on the golf course, just as they have done all the way back to Justin whacking balls with a plastic club.

“I don’t think I can put into words how cool Saturday is going to be,” Justin said. “This is going to be a great memory for me.”

Tiger Woods, son Charlie to make debut: ‘He has this opportunity to enjoy and he’s doing that’

Father and son warmed up for Thursday’s pro-am side by side and it was like viewing a mirror image, down to the club twirl.

ORLANDO – Alastair Johnston, the longtime IMG executive, has been waiting for this day for a long time.

Just days after Woods won the 1997 Masters at the age of 21, his first of 15 major championships, Johnston congratulated Woods, his next door neighbor at Isleworth Country Club, on his achievement and added, “Good news is you’ve now qualified for the Father-Son.”

Woods shot him a quizzical look, unaware that one of the perks of joining the major-winner club was a potential spot in what is now known as the PNC Championship, a two-person best-ball event pairing 20 major winners (or Players Championship winners) with a father (or father-in-law in the case of Bubba Watson), son or daughter.

“You’ll find out one day,” Johnston said.

That day has arrived as Woods is the headliner of an event that features the likes of World Golf Hall of Famers Gary Player, Lee Trevino and Annika Sorenstam. Woods is making his tournament debut with 11-year-old son, Charlie, who has taken to the sport, winning junior tournaments throughout Florida often with his famous dad lugging his bag.

PNC ChampionshipThe field, tee times, TV times, format

Father and son warmed up for Thursday’s pro-am round at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Grande Lakes Resort side by side and it was like viewing a mirror image, down to the club twirl.

“I don’t know if his swing is any different than mine, but his feels are very similar in creating shots,” Tiger said. “He has this opportunity to enjoy and he’s doing that.”

For Tiger, it’s all about the bonding experience with his son this weekend. This tournament isn’t really so much about a trophy – or in this case, a belt in homage to the original prize at the British Open – as it is about a celebration of family. Adding to the family affair this week for Team Woods is Joe LaCava Jr., the son of Tiger’s caddie, is on the bag for Charlie.

Charlie’s best shot of the day arguably was his approach at the par-4 12th, which he parked 3 feet from the hole. At every tee, Charlie buried his head in his yardage book and plotted strategy. One hole later, Tiger drew up the play, saying, “I’ll get it in play, then you can be aggressive.” Charlie’s eyes lit up at the possibilities.

While Charlie may be short in stature, Mike Thomas, father of World No. 3 Justin Thomas, said he’s about the same size as Justin at that age.

“Except he didn’t have speed,” Mike Thomas said. “Charlie’s got speed.”

Indeed, when he bashed driver at the third hole, Joe LaCava exclaimed, “That’s money.”

[vertical-gallery id=778080827]

Team Thomas is paired with Team Woods during Saturday’s opening round, which is fitting as Justin has become one of Tiger’s closest friends on Tour and a big brother of sorts to Charlie, who shares his father’s competitive spirit.

“He always talks about how he’s going to beat me,” Justin said of Charlie. “He’s never done that but he sure talks like he has.”

As further proof that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree, Justin recounted one heated nine-hole putting contest in 2018 when Thomas was World No. 1 at the time between he and Charlie and Tiger and the kid held a one-stroke lead with one hole to go. Charlie chirped, “Here I am, I’m nine years old and I’m beating the No. 1 player in the world and supposedly the best golfer of all time,” Thomas recalled. “He three-putted and I made it, so I shut him up pretty quick.”

Tiger famously made his first public appearance with a golf club on the Mike Douglas Show at age 2. For Charlie, this 36-hole televised competition represents his coming out party as a golfer and it comes with all the incumbent pressure of being the son of arguably the greatest of all-time.

“People at home will get pretty good entertainment out of watching him twirl the club, walk putts in and fist pump,” Thomas said. “He’s 11 years old. He’s allowed to do that.”

Joe LaCava’s son to caddie for Tiger Woods’ son at PNC Championship

Joe LaCava’s son will caddie for Tiger Woods’ son this weekend at the PNC Championship.

If you follow golf, you know the name Joe LaCava.

He’s the caddie for Tiger Woods, and has been on the 15-time major champion’s bag for almost a decade. Apparently looping runs in the LaCava bloodline.

This week when Tiger and his 11-year-old son, Charlie, tee it up at the PNC Championship at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Orlando, LaCava’s son, Joe Jr., will also there. On the bag for Charlie.

“There is one fun nugget that Tiger mentioned to me a number of months ago when he was kind of debating whether or not they would play in the PNC this year,” said VP of TGR Ventures Rob McNamara to Golf Digest. “He said, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if I had Joe LaCava Jr. caddie for Charlie?’”
