Tom Brady could care less about his legacy

Bucs QB Tom Brady spoke on “The Howard Stern Show” this week about his decision to leave the Patriots and why legacy doesn’t matter to him.

Watching NFL players on Sundays, we tend to forget that they are people just like you and me. Sure, they may be more famous and make more money, but at the end of the day, they have family, friends and real-life obligations like the rest of us.

Even so, it’s still hard to view a guy like Tom Brady as just your average Joe. Brady, the six-time Super Bowl champion and arguably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, left the New England Patriots this offseason after a 20-year run that produced nine Super Bowl appearances and three regular season MVPs. Now in Tampa Bay, Brady is looking to continue his streak of success and help return the Buccaneers to the postseason for the first time since 2007.

But, if you think Brady is concerned at all about his legacy and how leaving New England may affect it, think again. Appearing on The Howard Stern Show this week, Brady spoke about his departure from the Patriots, and said he’s never cared about what his legacy is, or will be, when it’s all said and done.

Per Brady:

“I never cared about legacy. I could give a s—- about (legacy). I never once when I was in high school did I think ‘Man, I can’t wait for what my football legacy looks like.’ That’s not me, that’s not my personality.”

As for why Brady decided to leave New England? Well, according to him, it was just time for a change.

“Why would I choose a different place? It’s because it was just time. I don’t know what to say other than that. I accomplished everything I could in two decades with an incredible organization, an incredible group of people, and that will never change. No one can ever take that away from me. No one can take those experiences or Super Bowl championships away from us.”

This line is probably the most telling: “I don’t know what to say other than that.” Again, Brady is human just like the rest of us. 20 years is a long time to be at one job. It was just time for a new challenge. Simple as that. Nobody can fault Brady for wanting to try something new, not even Patriots fans.

Tom Brady claims he holds no resentment towards Bill Belichick

Bucs QB Tom Brady appeared on “The Howard Stern Show” Wednesday and talked about his relationship with former coach Bill Belichick.

When you talk about the New England Patriots’ success over the last 20 years, there are only two names that matter: Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. The player and coach have been joined at the hip, for better or worse, during the franchise’s dynastic run.

But, after Brady shocked the NFL world this offseason by announcing his plans to leave New England for a new team, people began to speculate as to whether the future Hall of Fame quarterback had finally had enough of Belichick. Now, the debate about who the true mastermind was behind the Patriots’ six Super Bowl titles rages on more than ever.

Yet, if you ask Brady, he holds no ill will towards his former head coach, and also thinks it’s an unfair argument to ask who was the more successful person. Speaking on The Howard Stern Show today, Brady tried to put things to rest.

(via ESPN):

“I think it’s a pretty s—ty argument actually that people would say that, because again, I can’t do [Bill’s] job, and he can’t do mine. So the fact you could say, ‘Would I be successful without him, the same level of success?’ I don’t believe I would have been. But I feel the same vice versa, as well. To have him allowed me to be the best I can be, so I’m grateful for that. I very much believe that he feels the same way about me, because we’ve expressed that to each other.”

Look, 20 years is a long time for a player and coach to be together. The fact that the pair were able to make it work for so long, and have the sustained level success that they did, shows that they both worked well off each other.

For Brady, it was just time for a change and a new chapter in his life. His departure from New England doesn’t negate the 20-year run he had. Plus, if there is any ill will between the player and coach, time heals all wounds. Brady and Belichick will always be mentioned together, and I’m sure both are perfectly all right with that.

Tom Brady says he knew he wanted to leave the Pats before the start of last season

New Bucs quarterback Tom Brady revealed on “The Howard Stern Show” that he knew his time in New England was done before the 2019 season.

When Tom Brady revealed last month that he was leaving the New England Patriots after an illustrious 20-year career that included nine Super Bowl appearances, six championships and three regular season MVP awards, many people were shocked by the news. Fans in New England fully expected their Golden Boy to return in 2020 and ultimately end his career where it started.

But, it seems the one person who wasn’t all that surprised was Brady, himself. The future Hall of Famer, appearing on The Howard Stern Show today, revealed that he knew it was time to move on way before anyone else seemed to.

Brady’s appearance on Stern’s show is definitely worth a listen. It reveals some very interesting stuff football-wise, including his lack of trust in receivers last year.

It’s no secret that the Pats offense struggled last year, especially in the absence of tight end Rob Gronkowski, who retired last offseason. Brady never had the connection with receivers we’ve seen in years past.

Fortunately for Brady, now that he’s in Tampa Bay, he’ll have Pro Bowl receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to work with, as well as tight end O.J. Howard, who the Patriots actually inquired about at last year’s trade deadline.
