Clemson vs. The Citadel game gets The CW network’s No. 1 broadcast crew

Here’s who will be on the call for The CW Saturday when the Clemson Tigers welcome The Citadel to Death Valley.

Clemson football is making its first television appearance of 2024 on a network that isn’t under the ESPN umbrella of channels this week. That means there will be a new set of announcers for the Tigers’ Week 13 matchup against The Citadel Saturday.

The CW, which began televising ACC football games in 2023, is sending it’s No. 1 broadcast team to Death Valley for the Tigers-Bulldogs matchup. Veteran play-by-play announcer Thom Brennaman will call Saturday’s game with analyst Max Browne. Treavor Scales will report from the sidelines.

It’s Clemson’s first time appearing on The CW this year and just the second time overall. Last year, the network televised the Tigers’ 24-17 loss to NC State at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

Radio coverage for Saturday’s Clemson game will be carried on SiriusXM Channel 193, featuring the Clemson Athletic Network crew of Don Munson, Tim Bourret and Reggie Merriweather.

Clemson (8-2, 7-1) stayed at No. 16 in this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll after wrapping up the ACC portion of its schedule with a 24-20 victory over Pitt last Saturday. The Citadel is 5-6 and coming off a 30-17 win over Wofford in the Southern Conference.

Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 3:30 p.m. ET. The Tigers won their last meeting against The Citadel, 49-0 in 2020. Dabo Swinney is 3-0 against the Bulldogs as Clemson’s coach.

Can Clemson still get to ACC Championship Game?

Yes, though the Tigers’ chances are slim. Clemson trails the No. 12 SMU Mustangs (9-1, 6-0) in the ACC standings. The No. 10 Miami Hurricanes (9-1, 5-1) are currently behind Clemson in the standings but only because the ‘Canes have two conference games still to play while Clemson is already finished with conference play.

To reach the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte on Dec. 7, the Tigers will need the Hurricanes to lose against either Wake Forest or Syracuse in their final two regular season games — or for SMU to drop both of its final regular season games against Virginia and California.

Clemson moved up three spots to No. 17 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, unveiled Tuesday night.

Clemson football vs. The Citadel: Kickoff time, TV info announced for Nov. 23 game

Kickoff time for Clemson vs. The Citadel has been announced. Here’s what time the Tigers and Bulldogs will meet in Week 13, and what channel the game will be on.

The ACC on Monday announced kickoff times and TV/broadcast information for its Week 13 games, including the Clemson Tigers’ Nov. 23 game against The Citadel in Death Valley.

The Tigers (7-2) and Bulldogs (4-6) will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on Senior Day at Clemson Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised on The CW.

It will mark Clemson’s first appearance of 2024 on the CW network. It’s the second time this season that Cade Klubnik and the Tigers will appear in the mid-afternoon 3:30 p.m. window.

Clemson beat Virginia Tech last Saturday, 24-14, in Blacksburg behind three second-half touchdowns from Klubnik and a stingy Tigers defense that held Virginia Tech to 228 yards of offense.

The Citadel is coming off a 31-7 home loss to Chattanooga last Saturday. The Bulldogs are 2-5 in league play as a member of the Southern Conference.

Clemson and The Citadel last met in September 2020, a 49-0 Tigers shutout victory in Death Valley. Clemson leads the all-time series against the Citadel, 33-5-1.

Dabo Swinney is 3-0 against the Bulldogs as Clemson’s head coach.

CW Network unveils broadcast team for 2024 ACC football games

A familiar name will be the new voice of ACC football, at least as far as games broadcast on The CW goes.

While “talking season” and annual media events like the ACC Football Kickoff and Big Ten Media Days are dominating the conversation this week in college football, fans of ACC schools have some new information about games that will be broadcast on The CW this fall.

On Monday, The CW announced broadcast teams and studio hosts ahead of the 2024 season. In its second season televising ACC games, a familiar name will be taking the reins as the new play-by-play voice for The CW’s coverage of ACC football: veteran broadcaster Thom Brennaman.

News of Brennaman’s return to a major broadcast booth was announced over the weekend. Brennaman will team up with Max Browne (color commentary) and Treavor Scales (sideline reporter) on The CW broadcasts of ACC games this fall.

Brennaman has a lot of experience calling college football. He served as the play-by-play voice for the BCS National Championship Game on Fox from 2006-08 and was heavily featured on the network’s weekly coverage of Sunday NFL games for over 20 years.

Brennaman also served as the play-by-play voice of the Cincinnati Reds and called postseason Major League Baseball games for Fox. In 2020, he was fired after being caught on a “hot mic” using a homophobic slur during a Reds game against the Kansas City Royals. While attempting to apologize for the remark, Brennaman suddenly interrupted himself to announce a home run by Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos, spawning a viral social media meme.

Last year, The CW acquired the rights to ACC games that had been televised by Raycom Sports. ACC football games on The CW were called by Tom Werme, who also held play-by-play duties for the network’s ACC basketball broadcasts. Clemson appeared on The CW once in 2023: the team’s 24-17 loss to NC State on Oct. 28.

In addition to the ACC, The CW has also added Pac-12 (“Pac-2”) contests to its slate this season with both Oregon State and Washington State set to make frequent appearances on the network. Mike Yam, who previously worked for the Pac-12 Network, will host the new “CW Football Saturday” studio show beginning Saturday, Aug. 31.

Thus far, only two ACC games have been announced as CW Network telecasts: Virginia Tech’s Week 2 contest against Marshall on Sept. 7 at Lane Stadium and Wake Forest’s Week 3 matchup vs. Ole Miss on Sept. 14 in Winston-Same.

TV info for Clemson’s first two games this season was announced earlier this summer. The Tigers will face Georgia in their season-opener August 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta at noon ET on ABC. Clemson’s home opener vs. Appalachian State (Sept. 7) will be broadcast on ACC Network at 7 p.m. ET.

Swinney on Clemson vs. NC State being televised on The CW Network

Clemson’s game versus NC State on Saturday will be televised on The CW Network.

Dabo Swinney has pretty much seen it all through his 15 full seasons as Clemson’s head coach. But on Saturday, Swinney will be a part of something new — a Clemson game being televised on The CW Network.

Set to take on NC State on Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT, the Tigers’ eighth game of the 2023 season won’t be on ESPN, ACC Network or one of the more traditional channels. Instead, Clemson (4-3, 2-3 ACC) will have its fans tune into The CW Network, where Tom Werme, Jason Bates and Treavor Scales will call the television broadcast.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Swinney had to ask the media what channel number The CW Network even is.

“I have no idea what it is. I don’t even know where it’s at. Where do I go to it?” Swinney said.

Swinney added that he doesn’t watch much TV in the first place and that the 2 p.m. start time is unusual.

The Atlantic Coast Conference and The CW Network agreed to a deal in July that gave The CW Network exclusive broadcast rights to 50 ACC college football and basketball games each season through 2026-27.

The first-ever ACC football game on The CW Network was Pittsburgh’s game against Cincinnati on Sept. 9.

“We are thrilled to be adding The CW to our weekly television lineup for ACC football and basketball games,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said in a press release in July. “The CW’s national distribution will directly benefit our student-athletes, teams, alumni and fans. We appreciate ESPN and Raycom working together and look forward to the partnership with The CW.”

LIV Golf League rosters for 2023 to be announced this week; CW broadcast schedule revealed

Opening rounds will only be available on the CW app, while the second and third rounds will air 1-6 p.m. ET.

Correction: A previous version of this article indicated every CW affiliate would air LIV Golf broadcasts. LIV will be broadcasted in every U.S. market, not necessarily on every network affiliate.

By the end of the week the full 2023 rosters for all 12 teams in the LIV Golf League will be revealed.

LIV officials will announce the rosters of four teams per day, Wednesday, Feb. 15 to Friday, Feb. 17, as momentum builds to the first event of the season at Mayakoba’s El Camaleón Golf Course in Mexico, Feb. 24-26.

After securing a TV deal with the CW Network earlier this year, LIV announced that CW affiliates, as well as Nexstar owned and operated stations, in the U.S. would air all 14 events of the re-branded league’s first season in every U.S. market. Second- and third-round coverage on Saturday and Sunday will be broadcasted from 1-6 p.m. ET for all 14 events. Opening rounds on Friday will only be available on the CW app. If fans want to watch the live action when LIV tees it up in time zones opposite the states – visits like Australia, Singapore or Saudi Arabia, for example – live coverage will be available on the app.

Details on LIV broadcasts in regions outside the U.S. will be announced at a later date.

The upstart circuit led by Greg Norman and financially backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund also launched a new campaign titled “12 Teams. You Choose.” That asks fans to pick their team to support for 2023.

“Our diversity in teams that feature elite skillsets and unique personalities will help build new rivalries and fresh ways to watch professional golf as the sport enters a new era,” said Norman.

LIV Golf makes more changes ahead of second season with 2023 schedule, new role for Greg Norman

The schedule is out and Greg Norman has more responsibilities.

LIV Golf is making some big changes in 2023.

In the wake of players like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy saying Greg Norman should lose his job as commissioner and CEO of the upstart circuit backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Norman will now have an elevated role in the company as LIV makes more leadership changes ahead of its second year.

Majed Al-Sorour, CEO of the Golf Saudi Federation, will leave his position as LIV Golf’s managing director but remain as one of seven LIV Golf board members. Sports Illustrated was first to report the news.

“Majed Al-Sorour has been and will continue to be an invaluable part of LIV Golf, as he continues in his Board of Directors capacity,” said LIV Golf via a statement to Golfweek. “Majed’s role was pivotal in supporting the launch of LIV Golf. As the business transitions into its first full season with a new broadcast partnership in place, the time is right for the Managing Director role to transition and for Majed to focus efforts and attention on other interests.

“We are grateful for Majed’s hard work, contributions and getting LIV to this new stage.”

The SI report also included the complete schedule as LIV Golf transitions to its league format in 2023. Seven of the 14 events were already announced, with the league set to resume play, Feb. 24-26, at Mayakoba in Mexico. The league will unexpectedly return to Saudi Arabia for its season-ending team championship and also end a month later than previously planned.

LIV Golf 2023 schedule

April 28-30 LIV Golf Singapore Sentosa Golf Club Sentosa, Singapore
May 12-14 LIV Golf Tulsa Cedar Ridge Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
May 26-28 LIV Golf Washington, D.C. Trump National Washington, D.C. Potomac Falls, Virginia
June 30-July 2 LIV Golf Valderrama Valderrama Sotogrande, Spain
July 7-9 LIV Golf London Centurion Club Hertfordshire, England
Aug. 4-6 LIV Golf Greenbrier The Greenbrier White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia
Aug. 11-13 LIV Golf Bedminster Trump National Bedminster Bedminster, New Jersey
Sept. 22-24 LIV Golf Chicago Rich Harvest Farms Sugar Grove, Illinois
Oct. 20-22 LIV Golf Miami Trump National Doral Doral, Florida
Nov. 3-5 LIV Golf Jeddah Royal Greens Golf & Country Club King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia

The event in Orlando at Orange County National did not appear on last year’s schedule, and will be held the week before the Masters. The stop at Trump National in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. is also new in 2023. Last year’s team championship was held at Trump National Doral, but this year’s event at the former president’s club near Miami will be a normal, regular-season tournament.

Last week it was announced that LIV Golf had come to an agreement on a tv deal with the CW Network.

Lynch: With LIV Golf’s new TV deal, the desperation is in the details

How does a competitive process among multiple parties result in giving away the product for free to the worst-case option?

Given his talent for recasting excruciating humiliations as bold victories, it’s surprising that Greg Norman doesn’t present himself annually at the gate of Augusta National wearing a green jacket and insisting that what happened in 1996 — or ’86, ’87, ’89 and ’99 — was actually a triumph worthy of a place setting at the Champions Dinner.

“A momentous day for LIV Golf,” is how Norman described his league’s just-announced broadcast deal with The CW, the nation’s 25th most-watched network, or 29th if you’re chasing the 18-49 demographic who might be drawn to “golf, but louder.” (To be fair, the CW’s average viewer is 58, so they watch every show louder).

Alert to an opportunity to impress his boss, LIV’s chief media officer, Will Staeger, conjured a version of events that would have even George Santos calling for narrative restraint.

“Following a competitive bidding window with multiple U.S. networks and streaming platforms, the sports story of 2022 has just moved into pole position for the top story of 2023,” he wrote in a social media post.

Staeger’s comment raises two questions for those among us predisposed to cynicism: did autocorrect change “begging” to “bidding,” and how does a competitive process among multiple parties result in giving away the product for free to the worst-case option?

Mute the marketing and the reality of this deal has to be dispiriting for LIV and its hookworm hangers-on. No money changed hands, no network (major or minor) was willing to pay a fee for the product, and not a single legitimate sponsor has been attached to it. And those are only the facts apparent right now.

The agreement has been described as a revenue-share, though LIV currently generates no revenue, at least not for itself (MBS’s checkbook has blessed many a washed-up player, executive and politician with revenue beyond their worth). It’s feasible that sympathetic sponsors might materialize, especially if the Saudi Public Investment Fund — which owns 93% of LIV and covers 100% of its costs, all while claiming it isn’t subject to U.S. laws as it does business here — puts a squeeze on its partners.

Advertising could eventually provide a pay-off for The CW, but it won’t cover LIV’s production costs, much less the premium it has already paid to own Bryson’s tantrums and Brooks’ melancholy. It bears noting that The CW doesn’t submit to the standard Nielsen viewer ratings outside of weekday prime time hours, so actual audience figures for LIV broadcasts will be unavailable, or at least unvouched for. Advertisers will demand reporting metrics based on something more credible than Greg’s guff.

It’s also unclear just how many people will actually have access to LIV broadcasts. Friday rounds will only be available streaming on the CW app, which the press release boasted has been downloaded 90 million times (a cursory scan of your smartphone will illustrate the difference between downloading an app and actually using it). Saturday and Sunday rounds will be aired on CW stations. Perhaps.

Nexstar Media Group is The CW’s parent company and owns roughly one-third of its TV stations. The rest are affiliates and can choose whether or not to clear scheduled programming — be it teen drama reruns or local sports — to broadcast LIV’s tournaments. The announcement omitted mention of how many stations have committed to airing LIV. Pity the factotum who might one day be called upon to explain to MBS why some markets preferred repeats of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” to his $2 billion folly.

Norman gamely pointed out that The CW is available in 120 million American households. YouTube streams of LIV events were available on every connected device globally, yet audience numbers were dismal, showing inexorable decline after the early curiosity sampling. There are many possible explanations for why LIV has failed to gain traction with fans — the format, the frat brats in the lineup, the insignificance of the competition, the garish theatrics, the source of the funding. Perhaps ease of access to tournament broadcasts was another factor, but it requires a grandiose optimism to believe that The CW will sustain better results than YouTube’s 2.6 billion active users.

For all the spin put forth by Norman and his team, LIV has simply found a lesser storefront for the very same product that was ignored when given the largest platform possible. What was announced this week is less a broadcast deal than a distress sale, which is not to imply that anyone was willing to pay for it.

‘We are deeply disappointed’: National Press Club issues statement after LIV Golf announces TV deal with The CW Network

The National Press Club is not happy.

It’s safe to say the National Press Club is not happy with Nexstar’s decision to partner with LIV Golf.

Founded in 1908, the National Press Club is the world’s leading professional organization for journalists. The Club has 3,000 members representing nearly every major news organization and is a leading voice for press freedom in the U.S. and worldwide.

On Friday, its president Jen Judson released a statement regarding LIV Golf’s multi-year TV deal to air its tournaments on The CW Network, which Nexstar Media Group owns.

The statement speaks for itself.

“We are deeply disappointed that a company that makes money from news like Nexstar would agree to participate in such a shameful PR stunt as LIV Golf, which is fundamentally designed to rehabilitate the Saudi reputation, tarnished irreparably by the state-ordered gruesome murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018. We are left to wonder what if anything Nexstar stands for. You cannot have a brand in news and act this way. Saudi Arabia murdered a Washington Post journalist and cut him up with a bone saw.

“Riyadh wants to use golf to get Americans to forget about murder. We must not let them get away with it. We call on Nexstar employees — many of whom are journalists — to demand management explain why they have partnered with the murderers of a journalist. We urge Nexstar to do the right thing and cancel their bloody golf show. And if they don’t drop the program here is what we can do: don’t watch it; and write each sponsor asking them not to sponsor.”

LIV’s 14-event sophomore season is slated to get underway next month in Mexico at Mayakoba.
