Texas rekindles two old rivalries in 247Sports’ dream nonconference matchups

Many college football fans would love to see these programs go at it on the field again.

Even though Texas has not lived up to the standards that their fan base, one thing they do well is schedule nonconference games against intriguing opponents.

In the past few seasons the Longhorns have played iconic programs or old rivals such as USC, LSU, and most recently Arkansas. They also have a date with Alabama in 2022, but there are still some teams that the Longhorns used to play that many fans wish they would rekindle.

In fact, two of those matchups made 247Sports’ 10 future nonconference matchups they want to see.

Starting with the first matchup, a clash between old Big 12 rivals, Nebraska and Texas. A series that Texas leads 10-4 and won the last meeting when they faced off in 2010. Here is why 247Sports wants to see these two blue bloods square off again.

Well, we’re going to get this matchup soon when the Longhorns eventually join the SEC, along with Oklahoma. But for now, it’s an in-state matchup that is there for the taking. Why wait on this until the SEC? Make this a great non-conference game against two heated rivals. Heck, the Aggies and Longhorns recruit the same areas, so why can’t they battle it out on the field. Jimbo Fisher and Steve Sarkisian could become bitter rivals at some point, as long as both are still at their respective schools when the conference additions happen.
Playing these matchups yearly would surely rekindle the hatred that has not been lost by any means, but at the moment Texas has a tough enough schedule without having to worry about programs that would only look forward to beating them. Maybe one day Texas and Nebraska will cross paths down the line.
