DeSoto football petitions to stay in Texas’ 6A

DeSoto is looking to stay at the 6A level for football.

DeSoto High School is petitioning the University Interscholastic League to stay in the 6A designation. This, despite the school qualifying to play in 5A due to its size.

It is noteworthy since DeSoto has won the 6A Division II in consecutive years.

Thursday’s tentative football district assignments, as released by the UIL,has some programs seeking to move districts.

One of those is DeSoto (DeSoto, Texas), which has seen its enrollment decline and would now fit into the 5A category. Presumably, it would be an easier path towards a state title, given that 6A is generally considered the deepest and most difficult classification in Texas high school football.

Last year, DeSoto won the state title with a 15-0 record out of the 6A Division II Region 11. Twelve of their wins last year were by greater than 20 points.

The enrollment for 6A status is for schools with a student body population of 2,275 students or above. There are 249 schools in Texas that qualify outright based on the size of their student bodies. Six programs have requested to be elevated to 6A status (of which DeSoto is one of the six schools).

The 5A designation is for schools that range in size from 1,315-2,274.

In the previous cycle, the 6A schools were for a student population of 2,225 and up.

Schools have until Feb. 12 to file an appeal with the UIL. All appeals are scheduled to be decided on Feb. 20 during a hearing.

Dallas Morning News’ Greg Riddle expects the DeSoto appeal to stay at the 6A level to be granted.

How Longhorn commits fared at the 2022 Texas state championships

Five Texas commits won state championships over the weekend.

The 2022 UIL Texas state championships wrapped up over the weekend after some exciting games.

Texas was well represented with five commits participating in the action.

  • 2023 CB Malik Muhammad (South Oak Cliff)
  • 2023 LB Billy Walton (South Oak Cliff)
  • 2023 WR Johntay Cook (DeSoto)
  • 2023 RB Tre Wisner (DeSoto)
  • 2024 DB Jaden Allen (Aledo)

Muhammad and Walton anchored a strong defensive performance to guide South Oak Cliff to its second straight state title. Muhammad took home defensive MVP after hauling in a crucial pick-six to ice the game.

Aledo continued its run of dominance with a 52-14 victory over College Station. Allen had four tackles and a pass breakup in the win.

DeSoto capped off the weekend with a 42-17 win over Austin Vandergrift. The dynamic duo of Johntay Cook and Tre Wisner was a force from start to finish.

Here is a look at some of the highlights from the future Longhorns in the Texas state titles games.

Texas UIL announces schedule for high school football

Texas UIL has announced a scheduled kickoff for Texas fall sports. Lower levels to kick off in late August while the others in September.

While we await word from the Big 12 Conference and commissioner Bob Bowlsby on the non-conference schedule, the Texas UIL has made a decision on high school football. For most of the Big 12 and conferences around the country, the state of Texas is a hot spot for talent. Schools such as Alabama and Ohio State have done a good job in creating a pipeline in the Lone Star State.

Much like some college football players need the 2020 season to help their draft stock heading into the 2021 NFL Draft, high school players are in the same boat. Not all high school football players are at the caliber of a Tommy Brockermeyer or Ja’Tavian Sanders. Those players need the extra season of tape and discussions with schools to earn their scholarship offers. The state of California has already postponed their season but it doesn’t appear that Texas will follow suit.

The Texas UIL has announced that they will plan on starting the season on time for some. Classes 1A-4A are set to start practice on August 3rd while 5A-6A are starting September 7th.

The lower level high schools could have their season start date pushed back as well but right now they are on schedule for a late August kick off. If high schools are preparing to have a football season at this point, it is hard to imagine that the college level won’t.

Bob Bowlsby and the Big 12 Conference should have their finalized ruling in the next week as the month of July comes to a close.
