Texas Tech at Texas odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Texas Tech Red Raiders at Texas Longhorns odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets in a Big 12 battle.

The No. 11 Texas Tech Red Raiders (20-6, 9-4 Big 12) visit the Frank Erwin Center Saturday to take on the No. 20 Texas Longhorns (19-7, 8-5). Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Texas Tech vs. Texas odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

This has all the makings of a massive, thrilling Big 12 battle.

Texas is 15-1 at home this season, including wins against Kansas and Tennessee. The Longhorns’ lone loss was by 1 point (66-65) to Kansas State.

Texas might be dominant at home, but it is just 9-7 against the spread (ATS) there this season. The Longhorns have covered 3 of their last 4 but only 4 of their last 10. They have the No. 2-ranked defense in the nation, allowing just 57.6 points per game.

As for Texas Tech, it already took down Texas 77-64 this season, covering as a 4-point home favorite. The Red Raiders have covered 8 of their last 9.

Texas Tech is 4-3 ATS on the road. It ranks 105th in scoring (74.2 PPG) and 20th in opponents’ scoring (61.3 PPG).

Texas Tech at Texas odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas 64, Texas Tech 61

Money line

LEAN to TEXAS (-180).

I know it’s more expensive, but this has all the makings of a close, hard-fought game. It’s more comfortable laying the worse odds here than banking on a team winning by more than one possession.

Texas has been almost impossible to beat at home.

Just because it has won at home doesn’t mean it has covered, beating Kansas by 3 (79-76), Tennessee by 1 (52-51), and Oklahoma State by 5 (56-51) within their last 4 home games, failing to cover 2 of those.

It’s difficult to beat a team twice, especially one that has the second-best defense in the country and should have a raucous crowd backing it.

I’ll take TEXAS (-180) for a small wager to win outright here.

Against the spread

LEAN to TEXAS TECH +3.5 (-110).

I like the money line more in this one considering how close of a battle it projects to be, but Texas Tech, unlike Texas, has been a covering machine as of late.

I already mentioned the Red Raiders are 8-1 ATS over their last 9. They’re also 18-8 ATS overall. They’re the best-covering team in the Big 12 and are 8-1 ATS against ranked opponents.

Having already beaten Texas handily at home, this should be a close game. A 3.5-point spread is a bit too much not to consider with how good Texas Tech has played this season.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 125.5 (-107).

With an O/U of 123.5 in their first meeting of the season, the rivals combined for 141 points, well surpassing the projected total.

This time around, the O/U is 2 points higher. The trend points to this being a low-scoring game.

Texas owns the best Under home record in the conference at 11-5, while Texas Tech has the best Under road mark in the Big 12 at 5-2.

Both teams rank outside the top 150 (TTU 161st and Texas 342nd of just 358 teams) in possessions per game.

With Texas ranked 2nd in opponents’ points per game and Texas Tech 15th in opponents’ field-goal percentage, this has “gritty, slow-paced, defensive battle” written all over it.

Texas Tech at Texas odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Texas Tech at Texas odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-0) travel to the state capital Saturday for a noon ET kickoff against the Texas Longhorns (2-1) at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Below, we look at the Texas Tech vs. Texas odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Texas Tech bounced back from a lackluster 28-22 Week 2 win over Stephen F. Austin as a 31.5-point favorite to easily handle Florida International 54-21 last week as a 20.5-point favorite.

Texas destroyed Rice 58-0 Saturday as a 26-point home favorite after being upset the week prior by Arkansas 40-21 as a 5.5-point road favorite. The Longhorns prevailed over the Red Raiders in last year’s meeting 63-56 in overtime.

Texas Tech at Texas odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Texas Tech 34, Texas 28

Money line

I like the Red Raiders plus points so much in this spot that I almost have to SPRINKLE on TEXAS TECH (+260). Texas has played a tougher schedule through three games, but Texas Tech has a much better EPA, success rate, points per play and yards per play differentials.

Furthermore, there’s just too much unconditional love in the market for a Texas football program that’s one of the most high-profile in the nation. Everyone is excited about first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian after what he did as the Alabama Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator in recent seasons.

However, ESPN college football guru ranked Texas 95th in returning production and the Longhorns have fewer returning starters than the Red Raiders. Also, Texas Tech junior transfer QB Tyler Shough has been awesome so far in Lubbock. Shough leads the Big 12 in passing yards and is second in passer efficiency rating.

Against the spread

Definitely BET TEXAS TECH +0.5 (-110) heavier than or instead of the money line. Texas failed to cover last season vs. Texas Tech as a 17.5-point road favorite in a 63-56 overtime victory.

The Longhorns had a former three-year starter in QB Sam Ehlinger under center who was a preseason Heisman Trophy contender and still Texas Tech almost pulled off an outright upset.

There’s flummox in Texas’s quarterback room this time around. Sarkisian benched QB Hudson Card for QB Casey Thompson during the Longhorns’ 40-21 loss to Arkansas. Thompson has better numbers thus far but the point is Texas shouldn’t be laying more than a touchdown when it’s unsettled at quarterback.

We are getting significant “reverse line movement” in the betting market. For instance, nearly 60% of the action is on Texas according to Pregame.com at the time of writing, but the Longhorns have been steamed down from a 10-point favorite on the opener. It’s a red flag whenever sportsbooks make the more popular side cheaper especially when it’s a program as popular as Texas.

Over/Under

PASS because my predicted score is nearly aligned with the market’s projection so there isn’t much value in be betting the total.

For what’s it worth, the last three Texas Tech-Texas meetings have gone Over the total with last year’s game soaring Over by nearly seven touchdowns. Additionally, Texas Tech is 1-2 O/U and Texas is 2-1 O/U.

Texas Tech at Texas odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Texas Tech Red Raiders at Texas Longhorns sports betting odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The No. 15 Texas Tech Red Raiders (10-3, 3-2 Big 12) travel in-state for a conference showdown with No. 4 Texas Longhorns (10-1, 4-0) at Frank C. Erwin Jr. Center for a 9 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Texas Tech-Texas college basketball betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

  • Money line: Texas Tech +115 (bet $100 to win $115) | Texas -140 (bet $140 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Texas Tech +2.5 (-120) | Texas -2.5 (+100)
  • Over/Under: 131.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Texas Tech at Texas: Three things to know

  1. Texas Tech won four of its last five games, including a 27-point romping over Iowa State its last time out but, it was Texas Tech’s first time covering the spread in eight games. The Red Raiders are one of the best defensive teams in the nation; Texas Tech ranks seventh in points per game allowed (58.0) and is holding opponents to just 39.0% shooting.
  2. Texas has rattled off six straight wins after being defeated by one of the three teams ahead of it in the coaches poll (a 68-64 loss to Villanova Dec. 6) but, the Longhorns covered the spread in only three of those wins. Texas went into Morgantown and beat a then-No. 16 West Virginia team 72-70 as s 1.5-point underdog this past Saturday.
  3. Texas Tech-Texas split last year’s season series 1-1 straight up and against the spread. The Longhorns’ 68-58 win in their last meeting in February snapped a five-game losing skid to the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech at Texas: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Texas Tech 64, Texas 60

Money line (ML)

I’ll sprinkle on TEXAS TECH (+115) for a half-unit. Texas has been flying a little too close to the sun with some of its wins and is due to regress in the Big 12 standings. The Red Raiders know how to go into Austin and beat their conference rival, as Texas Tech has won its last two visits to Texas.

Against the spread (ATS)

GIMME TEXAS TECH +2.5 (-120) for 1 unit. It’s hard to poke holes in Texas’ 2020-21 resume but there are a couple of troubling matchup stats coming into this game. Texas averages more turnovers than assists and Texas Tech’s defense has the seventh-highest turnover percentage in the nation.

The Longhorns have coasted too easily with sloppy ball movement and it’ll catch up to them against a Red Raiders team that forces opposing offenses to make mistakes.

Over/Under (O/U)

Each team has played in four consecutive games that have gone Over the total so this is a good time to buy stock in the UNDER 131.5 (-105). Both teams are also below-average in pace of play.

I’d only place a tiny wager on the Under though because it’s a small total that could go Over at the foul line with both teams below-average in opponent’s free throw rate. You’d think this would be a hotly contested conference battle so we could see some time spent at the charity stripe.
