Jim Schlossnagle is reportedly leaving Texas A&M to become Texas Longhorns head coach

According to Chip Brown of 247Sports, Jim Schlossnagle is departing Aggieland with his coaching staff to become the new Longhorns coach.

Well, they often say, “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” and that certainly looks to be the case when it comes to Texas A&M baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle, who is reportedly leaving College Station.

According to Chip Brown of 247Sports, Schlossnagle is departing from Aggieland to become the new Texas Longhorns coach. Per Brown’s report, Schlossnagle intends to take his coaching staff with him to Austin.

Less than 24 hours ago, the No. 3 Aggies lost the College World Series finals to No. 1 Tennessee. Postgame, Schlossnagle was asked about his future.

“I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again. That hasn’t changed in my mind,” Schlossnagle proclaimed Monday night. “I have poured every ounce of my soul into this job. I have given this job every single ounce I could possibly give it.”

If the Horns247 report is true, Schlossnagle clearly dissembled through his teeth and pulled on the 12th Man’s heartstrings in the process.

Jim Schlossnagle’s coaching future with Texas A&M is reportedly in question

According to a new report, Texas A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle is set to make a decision regarding his future with the program

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Just minutes after Texas A&M’s (53-15) College World Series Finals loss to Tennessee in the decisive Game 3 on Monday night, Aggies head coach Jim Schlossnagle became the talk of the college baseball world.

Schlossnagle has led the program to two CWS appearances in his first three seasons. But during the past week in Omaha, rumors spread throughout social media regarding his coaching future.

On the surface, the rumors and their timing seemed extremely confusing, coming as they did during A&M’s run to the championship round. Then the Texas Longhorns announced the dismissal of longtime baseball head coach David Pierce on the day Schlossnagle and Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello, another hot coaching target, were playing for the title.

After the game, while Vitello crowd surfed with the Volunteer faithful, Schlossnagle was asked by TexAg’s Richard Zane if he could answer the “circulating rumors” regarding the Texas opening. Here is how he answered, minus several omissions:

“I left my family to be the coach at Texas A&M. I took the job at Texas A&M to never take another job again. That hasn’t changed in my mind.”

“I have poured every ounce of my soul into this job. I have given this job every single once I could possibly give it.”

Some may view his answer as an emphatic defense of what he built in just three seasons and read into it a future commitment to the program. After all the Aggies are doing everything to keep him, including the school’s recent $80 million commitment to renovating Blue Bell Park.

However, that smoke has become a raging fire. On Tuesday afternoon, Houston Chronicle writers Kirk Bohls and Brent Zwerneman revealed Schlossnagle is weighing his options between staying with the Aggies and leaving for the Texas job. His ties to Longhorns athletic director Chris Del Conte go back to their time together at TCU.

With a decision reportedly set to be made Tuesday night, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts has his work cut out for him. For what it’s worth, here is how the financials weigh out:

’50 people in the stands,’ Evan Aschenbeck gushes about 12th Man after Longhorns win

“Coming from Blinn where I had 50 people in the stands to having who knows how many we had. It was the best atmosphere and best fan base.”

Going from a junior college to an SEC university like Texas A&M is a massive difference as senior left-handed pitcher Evan Aschenbeck learned on Saturday night during a 4-2 win in extra frames against Texas during the Bryan-College Station Regional.

“It was probably the best atmosphere that I’ve ever been in pitching wise. I mean, coming from Blinn where I had 50 people in the stands to having who knows how many we had. It was the best atmosphere and the best fan base that I’ve ever been a part of,” Aschenbeck said. “I know that they’re going to pack it again (Sunday) night with whoever who we play. I know it’s just a game at the end of the day, we just try to go out there, execute pitches and play to the standard and not the scoreboard. Just trying to be the best version of ourselves.

“I just try to be myself, it doesn’t matter what the outing is going to be like because you don’t really know what the next pitch holds. So you have to worry about where your feet are and where your mind is at that point, going pitch by pitch.”

Aschenbeck (6-1) earned the win in relief of sophomore LHP Ryan Prager. He pitched 4.2 scoreless innings without allowing a hit, recording 1 walk with 1 K on 62 pitches.

‘Best college baseball atmosphere,’ Texas A&M LHP Ryan Prager recaps win vs. Longhorns

“That’s the best college baseball atmosphere, one, I’ve been in in-person and two, I’ve seen even looking at videos from the past,” he said.

Texas A&M sophomore left-handed pitcher Ryan Prager had a strong performance Saturday night at Blue Bell Park during a 4-2 win in 11 innings against Texas in the Bryan-College Station Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

“I thought the atmosphere of the crowd was outstanding! That’s the best college baseball atmosphere, one, I’ve been in in-person and two, I’ve seen even looking at videos from the past, what other places have done. That was the best I’ve ever seen,” Prager proclaimed. “I think the rivalry is what it is, that’s more so for the fans and for the university.

“For us, we’re just playing baseball. Yes, the opponent is who it is, but for us, it’s the same game that we played against Grambling, it’s the same against Texas. It was great for the fans to get to experience the rivalry in this setting but for us we’re just playing the game.

“We’re going to come back tomorrow and play the game against somebody.”

Prager was given a no decision after tossing 6.1 frames and allowing 4 hits, 4 walks and 2 runs with 7 strikeouts on 87 pitches.

Texas A&M senior 1B Ted Burton reflects on go-ahead hit in ‘electric’ extra innings win

“Walking into that stadium today, it was electric. The 12th Man showed up as they always do. I think it definitely plays a role,” he said.

According to Texas A&M senior first baseman Ted Burton, the 12th Man played a large role in Saturday night’s 4-2 victory in 11 innings against Texas.

“It played like a big league park today, that’s for sure. It went both ways and just trying to stick to the game plan. We had a lot of guys hit balls hard at people. Our pitchers did their job. When it came our time, we loaded the bases up and I was just trying to do my part to help the team out,” Burton recalled. “Just walking into that stadium today, it was electric. The 12th Man showed up as they always do, a little bit more today. I think it definitely plays a role in the game being the opponent, it’s tough to walk into that ballpark.

“We’re just playing to a standard here. It was a rivalry game but ultimately we’re just trying to win a ballgame and play our best baseball at all times.”

Burton went 1-for-5 with 1 RBI and 1 walk versus the Longhorns.

‘7,600 is a joke,’ Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle reacts to 11-inning win vs. Longhorns

“I thought both teams played great. I hope whoever’s in charge of the attendance numbers can do my taxes because 7,600 is a joke,” he said.

The No. 3 Texas A&M baseball team earned a 4-2 victory in 11 innings versus Texas on Saturday night at Blue Bell Park to advance to the Bryan-College Station Regional Final on Sunday evening.

After the game, coach Jim Schlossnagle spoke to the media.

“It was just an incredible ballgame. I thought that Lebarron Johnson and Gage Bane were awesome! And Prager was outstanding, Aschenbeck was great,” Schlossnagle said. “I thought that we got a lot of really good swings on them. Teddy in particular, it’s crazy to see how dumb baseball is. The guy destroys two balls to center field and then the one that gives us the lead is a swinging bunt that hits the base. I thought both teams played great.

“And I hope whoever’s in charge of the attendance numbers can do my taxes because 7,600 is a joke.”

Based on Schlossnagle’s recent interview with ESPN, Saturday’s attendance is likely a sign of what’s to come in Aggieland.

No. 3 Texas A&M to play No. 23 Louisiana in NCAA Regional Final after another Longhorns L

Instead of getting a much-anticipated rematch in the College Station Regional, the Aggies will face the only team that they’ve yet to play.

Instead of getting a much-anticipated rematch on Sunday night at Blue Bell Park between Texas A&M and Texas in the Bryan-College Station Regional, the Aggies will have to face the only team that they have yet to play thus far in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

After shutting out Grambling on Friday to begin the weekend, No. 3 Texas A&M beat the Longhorns 4-2 in an extra inning thriller to advance to the regional final. The Aggies will play No. 23 Louisiana after a dominant 10-2 victory by the Ragin’ Cajuns against Texas on Sunday afternoon.

Louisiana was knocked into the loser’s bracket Friday evening following a 12-5 loss to the Longhorns. The Ragin’ Cajuns got revenge and eliminated Texas with two 3-run homers in a 7-run top of the eighth inning to seize control following a 2-2 tie.

Two years ago, Louisiana’s season came to an end at Olsen Field on Sunday, June 5 during the 2022 regional. Texas A&M will attempt to make history repeat itself tonight at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.

Here are the best photos from Texas A&M’s 4-2 regional win over the Texas Longhorns

Texas A&M’s (46-13) exciting extra-inning victory over rival Texas inched the Aggies a game closer to winning the College Station regional and moving on to the Super Regional round for the first time since the 2022 season.

Under the masterful guidance of head coach Jim Schlossnagle and pitching coach Max Weiner, ace pitcher Ryan Prager delivered a stellar performance, striking out seven batters on just 87 pitches over six solid innings.

The reliable closer, Evan Aschenbeck, sealed the deal with a four-inning relief, allowing only one walk and resulting in a shutout. This strategic pitching plan has left the bullpen fresh and ready for Sunday night’s game.

Set to make his second start on the mound, sophomore lefty Shane Sdao has continued to show his immense potential after just two seasons with the program. He was named Co-SEC Player of the Week after a late regular season win over Ole Miss, recording seven strikeouts on the day.

While A&M’s offense relied on three Texas errors to earn the win, the hope is that things start to turn around, starting on Sunday night. After the game, here are the best photos from the rousing 4-2 win.

Texas A&M (46-13) defeated rival Texas (36-23) in an extra-inning thriller on Saturday night. The Aggies stay undefeated in the regional heading into Sunday’s final, while the Longhorns will now play Louisiana with a chance for a rematch.

Following the game, head coach Jim Schlossnagle made an exciting announcement. Sophomore lefty Shane Sdao, who was named Co-SEC Player of the Week after a stellar performance against Ole Miss, will be taking the mound on Sunday night. This will be his second start of the year, and fans are eagerly awaiting to see if he can replicate his success.

While the Aggies’ offensive woes hindered their chances at building a sizable lead, three Texas errors led to three Aggie runs, as Ted Burton’s memorable single in the top of the 11th led to a 3-2 and eventually final 4-2 lead as the Texas A&M finally took advantage runners in scoring position.

How to watch Texas A&M vs. Texas in the College Station Regional

Texas A&M vs. Texas will be broadcast in prime time on Saturday night

Texas A&M (45-13) will face the Texas Longhorns (36-22) in the second round of the College Station Regional, looking to move on to the Super Regional round for the first time in two seasons and stay in the winners’ bracket.

On Friday, both programs impressively rolled past their first-round opponents. The Aggies blanked Grambling 8-0, while the Longhorns exploded at the plate against Louisiana for an impressive 12-5 victory. After defeating Texas 9-2 on the road back on March 5, expect a heated contest with plenty on the line this time around.

While Texas A&M’s regular season may have had its ups and downs, the team’s final game against SEC play vs. Arkansas was a testament to their potential. They re-established their offensive dominance with a 14-4 blowout win. The team’s approach in Friday’s game was a stark contrast, with the Aggies amassing ten hits, led by Ted Burton’s impressive 3-4 performance, and Braden Montgomery contributing three hits.

Initially scheduled to stream only on ESPN+, the game will now be broadcast on ESPN and have a streaming option. Texas A&M vs. Texas will begin at 8:00 p.m. CT.
