Texas Bowl odds shift to Kansas State’s favor after Max Johnson transfer

Kansas State is now the favorite per Tipico Sportsbook.

The final game of the 2021 season will come on Jan. 4, 2022, when the LSU Tigers and Kansas State Wildcats meet in Houston, Texas. The annual Texas Bowl features a Big 12 team and an SEC team, in which both wear purple.

Kansas State opted to replace their offensive coordinator after the season. When the Wildcats face the Tigers for the bowl matchup, Collin Klein will take on the role of interim offensive coordinator. This isn’t the first time that the 2012 Big 12 Player of the Year has worked as an OC in some capacity. Klein was the co-offensive coordinator in 2019 before Chris Kleiman took over.

While the Wildcats will have a new play-caller, the Tigers will roll into Houston with an interim head coach with Brad Davis. He will return to his role as offensive line coach under Brian Kelly following the bowl game. LSU will also have a new quarterback under center for the postseason game after Max Johnson put his name in the transfer portal. Just who that quarterback it that will start remains to be seen.

Following the announcement, the odds changed to favor Kansas State.

Report: LSU to the Texas Bowl to face off with Kansas State

Looks like we have our bowl matchup.

The LSU Tigers will take on the Kansas State Wildcats in the Texas Bowl according to Brett McMurphy of Action Network.  The Bowl will be held in NRG Stadium Houston, Texas.

It will be the second time that LSU has played in Texas Bowl. In 2015 the Tigers beat Patrick Mahomes and Texas Tech 56-27.

The Tigers finished the season 6-6 and will be making their 53rd bowl appearance and has a 28-23-1 record in bowl games. A few weeks ago, a bowl game was in jeopardy when LSU was 4-6. However, the Tigers won their last two games against UL-Monroe and Texas A&M to become bowl eligible.

Offensive line coach Brad Davis will serve as the interim head coach for the bowl game, while new Head coach Brian Kelly will look on and evaluate the roster.

LSU will take on a Kansas State team that went 7-5 during the regular season, and it will be only the second time the two teams have played each other. In 1980 the Tigers beat the Wildcats 21-0.

Are LSU and Texas still on a collision course in bowl season?

Could we still see the LSU-Texas game we missed out on in 2020?

Two programs that had high aspirations going into the season are both in similar situations. Both teams are 4-5 after nine games and both are sitting in the bottom half of their conference standings with two wins in conference play. Both schools are in a bit of a conundrum when it comes to their quarterback situation.

Head coach Ed Orgeron stated this week they would go with a two-quarterback system as they opened up the positional competition this week. Both Max Johnson and Garrett Nussmeier will play this week against Arkansas and whoever plays better will stay in the game.

The Texas Longhorns on the other hand released their two-deep depth chart with the starter at quarterback listed as Casey Thompson or Hudson Card. Both teams haven’t performed at the level they expected and both need two wins over the final three games of the year. The difference being head coach Steve Sarkisian is in his first year and Orgeron is on his way out, still they could meet during the postseason.

Texas has matchups against Kansas, West Virginia, and Kansas State left on the docket. All three are very winnable games, according to the FPI they are favored in terms of win probability. That would give them a 7-5 record on the year.

LSU on the other hand has games against Arkansas, ULM, and Texas A&M. They are projected to win two of the final three games. The FPI has the Aggies with a 41.6% win probability in the season finale. That would give them a 6-6 record and that would avoid the first losing season in Baton Rouge since 1999.

Still, these teams seem poised for a postseason battle in the Lone Star State. According to the latest bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports, they could find themselves on the field in Houston, Texas, on Jan. 4 in the Texas Bowl.

The last time a Sarkisian offense faced off with an Orgeron defense, they dropped 55 points on the Tigers. This is a completely different team but you can bet he would attack them in a similar fashion with Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy.

Bowl Projections: LSU, Texas slated to face off

LSU could be facing Texas in the postseason, according to USA TODAY Sports.

LSU’s chances of sniffing the postseason have grown slim as of late, but the Tigers aren’t completely out of the conversation just yet.

LSU is projected to face Texas in the Texas Bowl on January 4th, 2022. Texas is currently 4-3 in their first year under former Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.

This projection is assuming 4-4 LSU can get past Arkansas in a couple of weeks, which seems like the most likely upset LSU could spring over the last few games of this season according to ESPN’s FPI. A win over ULM late in the season would get the Tigers to the six wins needed to become bowl eligible.

If LSU didn’t beat Arkansas, they would have to defeat either Alabama or Texas A&M… which does not seem like it’s going to happen given the way those two teams are playing right now.

Texas leads the all-time series with LSU 9-8-1, but the Tigers won the most recent matchup in a 45-38 top-ten showdown back in 2019. These two teams have not played on a neutral site since 2003 (Cotton Bowl).

Which matchup would you prefer to see?

While some goals are now out of reach for Texas this season, there is still a slight chance that they can appear in the Big 12 championship game and/or receive a berth to a decent bowl game. Continue reading “Where Texas football lands in the latest bowl projections after Week 8”

Bowl Projections: Ed Orgeron vs Steve Sarkisian in a Texas sized showdown

Would you like to see the Texas Longhorns and LSU Tigers do battle this bowl season?

How about this for a bowl game storyline, the LSU Tigers battle the Texas Longhorns in the postseason. Their 2020 game was wiped off the schedule due to the SEC’s conference-only schedule during the pandemic. Essentially getting to play that game one year later?

How about this for another storyline. Ed Orgeron against the man who took the USC job over him after being named the interim coach for the Trojans to finish out the 2013 season? That is how Kyle Bonagura sees the bowl season going with Orgeron’s team taking on Steve Sarkisian and Texas.

As USC begins its search for a new head coach, the idea of seeing Ed Orgeron (LSU) and Steve Sarkisian (Texas) on opposite sidelines would be appealing. Considering what both coaches have been through since, it’s hard to believe it was only seven years ago when USC passed over Orgeron to hire Sarkisian as Lane Kiffin’s replacement.

While the matchup itself would be highly entertaining, it would also be a preview of future matchups between the Bayou Bengals and the Burnt Orange when the Horns join the SEC in the coming years. Mark Schlabach has it a bit different with TCU facing LSU in Houston for the Texas Bowl instead.

Not near the level of an epic showdown with the Horned Frogs taking on the Tigers, but the schools do have history. TCU and LSU have met on the football field nine times, after going 0-2-1 in the first three, LSU has won six straight. The last bowl game came in 1936 in the Sugar Bowl, the Frogs won a thrilling 3-2 game.

Let’s go bowling: Latest bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports

The latest bowl projections have the LSU Tigers projected into two different bowl games.

Time to go bowling. Three different media outlets project two different bowl games. Both of which would be lower-tier games, can the Tigers start trending upwards?

Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports is back with his weekly bowl game projections. The LSU Tigers were recently projected to the Outback Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines but after week two’s slate of games that has changed. The Bayou Bengals are projected to go to the Music City Bowl game against a Michigan foe.

These two teams met once before in bowl season, a 1995 matchup in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Tigers won that game 45-26. LSU could look to make it 2-0 this season if the projection holds true.

Indiana Hoosiers vs LSU Tigers

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

This would be the first postseason game in the series history between these two schools. The last game was played in Baton Rouge, back in 1978. The Tigers won 24-17. The other two games took place in Indiana. Once in Indianapolis in 1924, LSU won that game 20-14. They wouldn’t play for another 50 years when the Hoosiers won 24-21 in Bloomington during the 1977 season.

LSU holds the series lead 2-1

ESPN projects a Lone Star Bowl Game

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach have their weekly projections (subscription required) and both have the Tigers playing in Houston. The Bowl tie-in has the Big 12 vs the SEC. LSU played Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl in 2015.

Bonagura: Baylor vs LSU

This would be an interesting game for a couple of reasons. Former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is the head coach of Baylor. Plus a former player, Siaki Ika transferred to play for his former defensive coordinator. LSU leads the all-time series 8-3. They haven’t met since 1985 when the Bears defeated the Tigers 21-7 in the Liberty Bowl.

Schlabach: Oklahoma State vs LSU

The battle of the “State’s” so to speak. Oklahoma State and LSU have met just once in their history. That game was a 13-0 shutout for the Tigers in Death Valley in 1956. There is a connection for this game as well. The Tigers hired Les Miles to be the head coach in 2005, his top assistant Mike Gundy was elevated to head coach of the Cowboys and has remained in that post ever since.

Latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections have the Longhorns Houston bound

USA TODAY Sports latest bowl projections have the Longhorns heading to Houston for the Texas Bowl. Their opponent being LSU.

With just two games remaining until the end of the 2020 college football season. Had the Texas Longhorns defeated Iowa State, their bowl projections could have been anywhere from the Cotton Bowl to the Cheez-It Bowl or anywhere in between. Since they failed to convert the 58-yard field goal attempt to tie the game, they appear to be Houston bound this bowl season.

It would be funny and somewhat ironic that they are destined to play in the same bowl game as they did to start the Tom Herman era in Austin. A trip to Houston to take on an SEC foe in the Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium. With so much turmoil and outside noise surrounding the future of the head coach, it would be somewhat poetic if the tenure of Herman ends how it started.

According to USA TODAY Sports bowl projections, the Longhorns will indeed head to Houston.

This is a matchup that many thought we would see until the COVID-19 pandemic caused plans to be altered. It would appear that it would be a favorable matchup for the Longhorns and a great way to send senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger out with a 4-0 bowl record.
