Texas A&M vs Mississippi State Game Preview

Why Texas A&M Will Win

It certainly isn’t pretty, but it’s working.

Is A&M getting good quarterback play? No. Does it have enough offensive weapons? No, and things didn’t get any better after losing star WR Ainais Smith to a leg injury.

But it still works.

It all collapsed against Appalachian State, but the defense held up time and again in the win over Miami, and it held on and survived everything Arkansas was able to do.

There’s no Mississippi State running game to worry about, and the A&M pass defense is strong enough to hold up. It’ll give up the mid-range plays, but it’ll make the tackle.

The Aggie D has been able to keep the game low scoring and in range against the Bulldogs over the last two years, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Mississippi State Will Win

The Texas A&M offense really, really isn’t working.

It’s good at scoring when it gets the chance, but it’s not getting enough out of the running game, and worst of all for the team that’s last in the SEC in total O, it’s not controlling the clock.

Mississippi State isn’t controlling the time of possession like it normally does, but Texas A&M really isn’t doing much to hold on to the ball. If you can’t keep the chains moving, the Mike Leach offense will be happy to keep its offense on the field for 40 minutes.

What’s Going To Happen

How did LSU pull off the win over the Bulldogs? It rallied in the fourth quarter with 21 points on a great finish from Jayden Daniels, and it held the ball for close to 33 minutes.

LSU stopped the Mississippi State offense on third downs. Texas A&M can do that. LSU then used those stops late – and was helped by a fumble recovery – to pull it off. A&M might be able to come up with the takeaways, too.

The offense, though, won’t be able to do enough to overcome a strong day from the D.

It won’t be pretty, but the Mississippi State defense will rise up on two late A&M drives.

Mississippi State vs Texas A&M Game Preview

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Things are starting to work, even with two straight losses.

The defense hasn’t been a problem since Mike Leach took over. The Bulldogs continue to be fantastic against the run, they’re great at getting the D off the field, and they have yet to allow over 370 yards in a game.

The offensive side might not be doing a thing down the field, and there’s no running game, but the passing attack is putting up close to 350 yards per game and it’s able to control the clock and the tempo.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M has zero offensive spark.

It’s one thing to play a deliberate, controlled style, but the results have to be there for all the work. The O couldn’t do much of anything against Colorado, and with the Arkansas game there for the taking, the Aggies managed just 272 yards in the 20-10 loss.

Get up early on A&M and it might not have the ability to bounce back.

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas A&M Will Win

No, really. Mississippi State can’t do anything downfield with its midrange passing attack.

A&M’s defense continues to be everything it was supposed to be. Arkansas was able to come up with a few big plays with a day full of offensive balance, but it didn’t get a whole lot of help from the offensive side. At home, the D will do its part, and now it’s time for the other side of the ball to pound away.

NC State has a decent running game against the mediocre, and the same goes for Memphis – albeit with a difference style – but Mississippi State has yet to face anyone who can line up and blast away.

The offensive line has been a sore spot for A&M, but even with the overall struggles the ground game hasn’t been that bad. It’s averaging over five yards per carry and was effective against Arkansas, but there just weren’t enough carries.

In this, A&M has to hold the ball enough to stop the Mississippi State time of possession stranglehold, and it has to run the ball at least 30 times.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect fireworks in what should be a tough, intense game between two teams desperate to come up with a bounce back win.

Considering what’s coming up soon for each side, this is a big deal.

At home, A&M will get a huge day out of the D. Mississippi State will dink and dunk, but they passes won’t go anywhere with the Aggies getting physical enough to hold serve on third downs.

It’ll be slow and go for the A&M offense, but the running game will be okay and the field position battle will tilt its way. It won’t be what Aggie fans are hoping for in terms of dominance, but after the loss to the Hogs, just getting the W will be enough.

Why Texas A&M Will Win

There doesn’t seem to be an interception that Mississippi State isn’t happy to throw.

The Mike Leach passing game works, but the offense has lost three fumbles and aa interceptions in the first three games, giving away six interceptions in the 24-2 clunker to Kentucky.

That’s one more turnover than Mississippi State gave up in all of 2018.

But can the Texas A&M defense handle the quick-hitting midrange timing offense? Short answer, sort of, but the real key to this game is on the other side of the ball.

For all of Mississippi State’s issues, it’s hanging on to the ball for forever – almost 34 minutes per game. Texas A&M is keeping it for almost 33 minutes a game because it’s hitting on third down play after third down play.

Miss State can’t win this thing without offensive control, and it probably won’t have it.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Mississippi State Will Win

This thing is going to work … eventually.

It was amazing that the Mike Leach offense had the timing and effectiveness it did against LSU to open up the season. With no spring ball and a modified offseason, it was supposed to take a while to get everything in place. Eventually, everyone will get it and it’ll all just click.

Lost in the all of the issue on offense is a Bulldog defense that’s been terrific at getting into the backfield and strong at hitting the quarterback, and the run defense – partly because everyone is throwing to try to keep up – has been outstanding.

The A&M pass defense has been lit up over the last two weeks by Alabama and Florida, allowing the two to complete 73% of their throws for close to 750 yards and eight touchdowns. As long as KJ Costello can do everything possible to not throw a ton of picks, everything changes.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not just that the Mississippi State passing game isn’t clicking, it’s not clicking down the field to make big plays.

Both lines will play well, but the Aggies and QB Kellen Mond will be far more careful with the ball. They’ll do enough to keep the Bulldogs from controlling the clock, but it’ll be a close fight throughout.

Mississippi State won’t be that bad again.
