Schlossnagle shares news about injured Texas A&M stars Shane Sdao and Braden Montgomery

“It changes a lot. (Sdao) had been as effective of a starting pitcher as anybody on our team. We will have to adjust a little bit,” he said.

After throwing only 11 pitches against Oregon on Sunday night during the Bryan-College Station Super Regional, Texas A&M sophomore left-handed pitcher Shane Sdao is out for the season according to coach Jim Schlossnagle.

“He won’t pitch again this year, but the prognosis was better than originally expected for next year. They have got to wait two weeks, let some swelling go down and then reevaluate him one more time to be sure. But it looks a lot better than expected for Shane next year,” Schlossnagle said. “It changes a lot. He had been as effective of a starting pitcher as anybody on our team. So we will have to adjust a little bit.

“Not ready to announce that yet. Justin obviously did not pitch – he just threw the one inning in the regional and did not pitch in the super regional. So he is ready to go. He had a couple good sessions this week.

“But the goal obviously is to stay in the winners’ bracket so we do not have to play as much. That would help. But we will have to have some other guys step to the forefront. That is one of the things I challenged the pitching staff about: who is going to be the Kaeden Kent or more of the pitching staff?

“Somebody that has not pitched as much is going to have to pitch a lot and pitch well for us to stay up there for a long time.”

Junior superstar Braden Montgomery suffered a season-ending injury on Friday afternoon against the Ducks. The highly touted outfielder and right-handed pitcher will be present to root on his teammates at the College World Series this weekend.

“He is going to join the team in Omaha probably within the next couple days,” Schlossnagle told the media Wednesday.

The No. 3 Aggies (49-13) face SEC rival Florida (34-28) on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. on ESPN.

University of Tulsa hires Justin Moore from Texas A&M as next athletic director

“I’m excited to join the University of Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane has a rich athletics history with competitive teams and bright athletes.”

The University of Tulsa has hired Justin Moore as it’s next director of athletics.

ESPN college football senior writer Pete Thamel broke the news on Tuesday night. Moore previously served as the executive deputy athletic director at Texas A&M.

“I am excited to join the University of Tulsa,” Moore said in a news release. “The Golden Hurricane has a rich athletics history with competitive teams and bright student-athletes. I believe in the direction of the university under president Carson’s leadership. I am eager to build relationships with so many great people – the coaching and administrative staffs, donors, fans, student-athletes, alumni and the Tulsa community – and get to work advancing this amazing program.

“I first came to admire the University of Tulsa when we played during my time with Houston. There is truly something special in Tulsa. I look forward to amplifying Rick Dickson’s success in the coming years.”

Moore became an Aggies alumnus in 2004 before starting his career as a Texas A&M special athletics assistant in 2006.

‘Take in the moment,’ Texas A&M 2B Kaeden Kent reflects on grand slam in win vs. Oregon

“I’ve never hit a baseball and been able to take in the moment. That was the first time I’ve ever been able to do that and it felt great.”

The Texas A&M baseball team trailed Oregon 8-4 entering the bottom of the seventh frame on Sunday evening during Game 2 of the Bryan-College Station Super Regional at Blue Bell Park.

The No. 3 Aggies scored 9 runs following the seventh-inning stretch. Texas A&M took the lead for good with an emphatic grand slam by sophomore second baseman Kaeden Kent.

“It was a 2-2 heater. I’ve never hit a baseball and been able to take in the moment. That was the first time I’ve ever been able to do that and it felt great,” Kent recalled. “Being on the field when (the 12th Man is) going crazy in the ninth inning when we’re down to our last out is the most insane feeling that I’ve ever experienced. In the seventh when we had our big inning, the Oregon pitchers were struggling a little bit out there, it plays a huge role into us winning that game.”

Kent fell a triple shy of the cycle and went 3-for-5 with a game-high 5 RBI and 2 runs.

‘Breaks your heart,’ Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski stays classy amid losses vs. Texas A&M

“First thing on my mind is Shane Sdao. Having watched young guys that are talented walk off the field with injuries is part of our lives.”

Despite losing back-to-back games during the Bryan-College Station Super Regional this past weekend, Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski remained extremely classy, beginning his postgame press conference Sunday night by sending good vibes to a Texas A&M sophomore left-handed pitcher.

“First thing on my mind is Shane Sdao. Having watched young guys that are super talented walk off the field with injuries is part of our lives now. We’ve got guys that have done that, walk off the field and have to overcome adversity. It breaks your heart as a coach to see someone go through that,” Wasikowski said. “You saw two very good players, future Major Leaguers, that happened to this weekend in this really competitive super regional. My heart goes out to those two young people and their families.

“A lot of guys on the senior class that is represented here have gone through similar struggles like that. It requires a lot of mental toughness, a lot of grit and determination. I really respect young people that have to go through that to be able to get to their dreams and goals.”

View some of the best photos from Texas A&M’s late rally victory to move on the College World Series!

The Texas A&M Aggie baseball team needed all nine innings to secure their spot in the College World Series. For a large portion of the game, it looked like we were headed for game three. Oregon took an 8-4 lead into A&M and had some work to do if they wanted to get back into the game.

It took a little Olsen magic and a historic meltdown by the Ducks pitchers, but the Aggies exploded for a nine-run seventh inning to take a 13-8 lead. Multiple walks and a hit batter led to five runs coming across the plate, tying the game at 8-8. With bases loaded and two outs, Kaeden Kent stepped into the batter’s box, and with a 2-2 count, he blew the game wide open with a grand slam over the right cent wall.

Up 13-8, A&M would go on to add two more insurance runs off a Hayden Schott home run in the top of the eighth. Oregon was able to put one more run on the board before it was all said and done, but it would be the end of the line for the Ducks, with the Aggies taking the series in Game Two with a 15-9 victory. Below are some of the best photos from the game.

The No. 3 Texas A&M baseball team beat Oregon by a final score of 10-6 on Saturday afternoon at Blue Bell Park to begin the Bryan-College Station Super Regional.

Sophomore left-handed pitcher Ryan Prager had a tough start. He pitched 1.2 frames and allowed 7 hits and 6 runs with 1 strikeout on 41 pitches.

Junior RHP Chris Cortez came in, was lights out and saved the day per usual to earn the win. Cortez (9-3) tossed 5.2 scoreless innings and gave up 3 walks and 2 hits with 10 Ks on 89 pitches.

With two runners on base in the top of the eighth, senior LHP Evan Aschenbeck took over for Cortez and got out of the jam. Aschenbeck recorded his eighth save by pitching 1.2 frames without allowing a hit on 22 pitches. He struck out 60% of batters faced.

Texas A&M junior pitcher Chris Cortez dominated in Super Regionals vs. Oregon

“I don’t try to come in and pitch to the scoreboard. Prager has been awesome all year. It was just an opportunity for me to go pick him up.”

The No. 3 Texas A&M baseball team beat Oregon by a final score of 10-6 on Saturday afternoon at Blue Bell Park to begin the Bryan-College Station Super Regional.

Junior RHP Chris Cortez came in, was lights out and saved the day per usual to earn the win. Cortez (9-3) tossed 5.2 scoreless innings and gave up 3 walks and 2 hits with 10 Ks on 89 pitches.

“I don’t try to come in and pitch to the scoreboard. My job is to get outs. Prager has been awesome all year. It was just an opportunity for me to go pick him up. I knew if I put up zeroes, the offense was going to score some runs. That’s my job is to go out there and put up zeroes,” Cortez said. “(My mindset was) to go in and fill it up. It doesn’t matter if I go in the second inning, third inning or the ninth inning, it’s the same thing. One pitch at a time, one inning save. My mentality doesn’t change if I go in earlier or late in the game.”

Game 2 at Olsen Field is Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

‘No panic button,’ Texas A&M senior catcher Jackson Appel reflects on beating Oregon

“We know that we’ve got guys like Chris that are going to come in and they’re gonna dominate. There was no panic button from the offense.”

The No. 3 Texas A&M baseball team beat Oregon by a final score of 10-6 on Saturday afternoon at Blue Bell Park to begin the Bryan-College Station Super Regional.

“We know that we’ve got guys like Chris that are going to come in and they’re gonna dominate. No worries, like that game could easily stay at six the rest of the game for Oregon,” explained senior catcher Jackson Appel. “There was no panic button from the offense. We’ve done it before. We had like Georgia down 9-0 in the first inning earlier in the year and I think we run-ruled them that game. Just not hitting the panic button, staying good, that’s why we wear these shirts. Just finding a way and never hitting the panic button offensively.”

Appel was 3-for-5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored against the Ducks. Game 2 at Olsen Field is on Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

‘Not sure I’ve ever been more proud,’ Schlossnagle recaps Texas A&M win vs. Oregon

“I’m not sure I’ve ever been more proud of a team,” he said. “You know, emotionally, Prager goes out and didn’t have a great first inning.”

Murphy’s Law appeared to be taking place early at the Bryan-College Station Super Regional on Saturday afternoon as the Texas A&M baseball team trailed Oregon 6-3 after two innings.

On top of that, junior outfielder Braden Montgomery suffered a season-ending right leg injury in the bottom of the first frame, deflating the crowd at Blue Bell Park. Despite that, the No. 3 Aggies prevailed 10-6, much to the joy of coach Jim Schlossnagle.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever been more proud of a team. You know, emotionally, Prager goes out and didn’t have a great first inning. Then we battle back into it and then the injury,” Schlossnagle said. “To get down 6-3, the emotions of that, I think a lot of teams fold. Chris gave us a big lift. I thought Hayden Schott had a lot of great at-bats, and obviously, Jackson. Super proud of our club. All we’ve done is won a game, nothing more than that. We’ve gotta be ready to go tomorrow. I think Oregon has a good team and we’re going to face some good lefties tomorrow.”

Game 2 at Olsen Field is Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

‘He’s out for the year,’ Texas A&M coach Schlossnagle shares Braden Montgomery’s status

“It’s the third time this has happened to me in my career where right at the tail end of a season where we lost one of our best players.”

The Texas A&M baseball team defeated Oregon, 10-6, to begin the Bryan-College Station Super Regional at Blue Bell Park.

However, the mood in Aggieland is somber following a right leg injury to junior outfielder Braden Montgomery in the bottom of the first inning on Saturday.

“I was telling these guys that it’s the third time this has happened to me in my career where right at the tail end of a season or in the postseason where we lost one of our best players. It happened at Tulane and TCU,” Aggies coach Jim Schlossnagle said postgame. “I don’t think he’ll be back. I don’t know the injury exactly. I haven’t talked to the doctors but yeah, I think he’s out for the year.”

Sentiments were the same from Ducks coach Mark Wasikowski.

“First thing on my mind is for Braden Montgomery. I hope the kid’s OK,” Wasikowski emphasized. “That’s a guy that we recruited, we saw quite a bit first hand and up front at Stanford. He’s obviously a very talented player and a great person. I hope he’s OK.”
