‘Conner’s going to go into the spring as the number one’ HC Mike Elko appears on the Paul Finebaum Show

Aggies head coach Mike Elko provides an update on QB Conner Weigman’s injury recovery

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, who established himself as a favorite among the fan base even before coaching his first game with the program, has made the media rounds during the A&M’s spring practice period, which officially began late last week.

While the roster as a whole, which is filled with blue-chip talent at every level, will continue to create multiple storylines this offseason, incoming redshirt sophomore starting quarterback Conner Weigman’s injury recovery after missing eight games during the 2023 season is under the microscope once again.

On Monday, during an interview with Paul Finebaum on the SEC Network, Elko expanded on the talent of the Aggie’s quarterback room while providing a straightforward update on Weigman’s injury progression:

“Connor’s going to go into the spring as the number one, and I think everyone’s aware of that,” Elko said. “Like everthing, you want competition and competition within your program.”

In terms of how he’s working through the everyday practice-related tasks, Elko expanded on the level of intensity that Weigman can take on during the early portion of the spring period:

“He’ll be able to work efficiently as a pocket passer. I don’t know how well he’ll be able to truly run around yet,” Elko stated. “He still hasn’t quite been fully out there doing agility work and those types of things. It’s important for us to get him out there and get him integrated in the system.”

Regarding the options behind Conner Weigman, senior Jaylen Henderson, and sophomore Marcel Reed are about as good as backup security.

“You have two quarterbacks who filled in and had some very succesful moments, as Jaylen Henderson on the backend of the year had a great game against Mississippi State. Jaylen wound up getting hurt on the first series of the bowl game, and Marcel Reed, as a true freshman steps in and throws for over 370 yards in the bowl game.”

Right now, nothing on the injury front has changed outside of the already known players who will miss spring as they continue to recover, including offensive linemen Kam Dewberry and Aki Ogunbiyi, defensive ends Shemar Turner and Enai White, and tight end Donovan Green, who missed the entire 2023 season due to an ACL tear.

For Conner Weigman, slow and steady wins the race, and a full recovery should be the only thing on his mind. Texas A&M’s annual Maroon & White Spring Game will take place on Saturday, April 20.

Report: Texas A&M WR Evan Stewart has returned to spring football practice

Texas A&M wide receiver Evan Stewart has reportedly returned to spring football practice from his brief absence after a mild ankle injury last month

Texas A&M and head coach Jimbo Fisher received some fantastic news on Monday, as star wide receiver Evan Stewart has reportedly returned to practice in the final week of spring football after sustaining a mild ankle injury last month, just five days before the Aggies’ Maroon and White Spring Game on Saturday, April 15.

Stewart was pictured with a walking boot on a mutual friend’s post on social media in March, leading to questions regarding just how serious the image was, until Jimbo Fisher finally put the issue to bed, stating that Stewart’s injury was simply nothing to worry about going forward.

Just how quickly Stewart will assimilate himself into the offense the rest of the week is up to the coaching staff, but the hope is that he’s healthy enough to take part in the spring game due to the value of pre-season snaps with presumed starting quarterback Conner Weigman, who are both entering their sophomore campaigns while already developing notable chemistry late last season.

In 2022, Evan Stewart accumulated 53 receptions for 549 yards and 2 receiving touchdowns in 10 games.

On3 Sports ranks Texas in Top 10 of most intriguing spring games Saturday

The Texas spring game is perhaps the most interesting scrimmage of the weekend.

It’s game week. The Texas Longhorns football program will give an early look at their 2023 squad on Saturday afternoon. Continue reading “On3 Sports ranks Texas in Top 10 of most intriguing spring games Saturday”

Alabama source: Former Texas commit Jalen Milroe looks “1,000 times better”

Alabama thinks Jalen Milroe is “1,000 times better” than he was last season.

Former Texas quarterback commit Jalen Milroe is reportedly looking vastly improved this offseason. According to an onlooker at Alabama spring sessions, Milroe looks “1,000 times better.”

Tide Illustrated editor Tony Tsoukalas shared the following of the Alabama quarterback.

He looked 1,000 times better than last year. If he would have played the way he did today against Texas A&M, we’d have beat those guys by 80 points.

A couple thoughts come to mind from the above quote. First, the report is pouring on the hyperbole a little too thick. I wonder if the comment is defensive or if he is truly that greatly improved. He will need to be that improved.

The A&M game is mentioned for a reason here and not just because Milroe played in that game. The veteran quarterback played against Arkansas last season, too. The Aggies finished 5-7 last season and should have finished worse. The team was completely inept offensively. Poor offense from the Tide was the only way the Aggies could stay in the game. That’s exactly what the Aggies got from the Crimson Tide offense.

From what little we’ve seen from Milroe, he does appear to be a better player for Alabama this spring. How much better he is could determine the Week 2 matchup against Texas.

Texas A&M Spring Football: Changes to the offensive line may be on the horizon

With two full weeks of spring football in the books for Texas A&M, potential changes to the offensive line may be coming soon

It’s not so often that big-time depth chart changes occur during spring football for any FBS programs, especially for teams as veteran-led as Texas A&M. However, one of the primary weaknesses during the disappointing 2022 5-7 campaign for the maroon and white can be blamed on the inept and disjointed play of the offensive line.

The Aggies concluded their second full week of spring football practices this weekend, and aside from a couple of notable 2024 recruiting that took place in the process, senior right guard Layden Robinson’s press conference gave an insight on potential changes to the offensive line this spring, and possibly the start of the 2023 season. When discussing junior starting right tackle Reuben Fatheree, Robinson revealed the intriguing change in practice:

“Reuben Fatheree is making transitions. He is playing left too. All of us are playing different positions. We are getting better in every aspect.”

Now that’s an interesting change because solidifying the left side with one of the more proven tackle options on the roster could make way for freshman tackle Chase Bisontis to receiver reps at right tackle this spring. During Thursday’s practice, the dream scenario became reality as offensive line coach Steve Addazio is shifting things around to yield the best possible outcome this spring.

Reuben Fatheree’s ability at left tackle will obviously need more reps to determine his overall comfort level at the spot, but if it sticks, Chase Bisontis will become the preferred option at right tackle and would follow in the footsteps of Fatheree and starting center Bryce Foster who both entered A&M as four-star recruits who earned starting positions in year 1.

Any offensive success during the 2023 season will depend on the offensive line play because if consistency isn’t established through the first four or so games, solid quarterback play in a broken pocket can only help this team so much to reach its lofty goals. Either way, this is very encouraging news moving forward. On to Week 3 of spring football, we go. Gig ‘Em.

Texas A&M Spring Football: Jimbo Fisher and players speak during the second week of spring practice

Hear what Aggies Head coach Jimbo Fisher, DL McKinnley Jackson, and OL Layden Robinson had to say during Thursday’s Press Conference

Texas A&M is off to a great start during the second full week of spring football practice, and the best part of all is that aside from the low-hanging fruit that is the playcalling “controversy” between Fisher and new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, all is quiet on the maroon and white front, for now.

On Thursday afternoon, Jimbo Fisher, senior defensive lineman McKinnley Jackson, and senior offensive lineman Layden Robinson sat down to take questions for the local media regarding the progress the team has made during spring ball, potential postion changes on the O-line, and of course, how well Bobby Petrino’s has adjusted to his new gig after a couple of months on the job.

Aside from the playcalling dispute that will hopefully be put to bed once and for all, star sophomore wide receiver Evan Stewart’s ankle injury that was revealed through a social media post (to be public) last weekend finally received some clarity, as Fisher states that he is currently “day to day”. Here is what all three had to say in the afternoon.

Texas A&M Spring Football: How did the Aggies depth chart shake out after practice No. 5?

After the Aggie’s fifth spring practice on Monday, how did the depth chart shake out?

Texas A&M finished their fifth spring practice on Monday at the start of their second full week within the 15-practice limit, and after spending two days in just helmets and shorts, and two days with shoulder pads while abiding by NCAA mandates, the Aggies were allowed to practice in full pads for the first time this spring.

After head coach Jimbo Fisher made it clear that every position (for the most part) was in play during his press conference last week, Texas A&M’s 1st and 2nd team offenses looked very similar to what we at Aggies Wire projected they could look like in the beginning stages of spring practice, especially after the injury news regarding wide receiver Evan Stewart. Here’s how they lined up:

1st-team offense:

  • Quarterback: Conner Weigman
  • Running back: Amari Daniels
  • Wide Receiver: Ainias Smith, Moose Muhammad III, Noah Thomas
  • Tight End: Donovan Green, Theo Melin-Ohrstrom (12 personel)
  • Left tackle: Dametrious Crownover
  • Left guard: Kam Dewberry
  • Center: Mark Nabou
  • Right guard: Layden Robinson
  • Right tackle: Reuben Fatheree

2nd-team offense:

  • Quarterback: Max Johnson
  • Running back: Le’Veon Moss, Reuben Owens
  • Wide reicever: Jalen Preston, Micah Tease, Raymond Cottrell
  • Tight end: Jake Johnson, Fernando Garza
  • Left tackle: Colton Thomasson
  • Left guard: Ak Ogunbiyi
  • Center: Remington Strickland
  • Right guard: John Sabra
  • Right tackle: Chase Bisontis

1st-team defense:

  • Defensive tackle: McKinnley Jackson, Walter Nolen
  • Defensive end: Fadil Diggs, Shemar Turner
  • Linebacker: Edgerrin Cooper, Chris Russell
  • Cornerback: Kent Robinson, Tony Grimes
  • Nickel: Bryce Anderson
  • Safety: Demani Richardson, Jardin Gilbert

Due to multiple preseason injuries and excused absences, the starting offense and defense are missing multiple starters such as center, Bryce Foster, left tackle, Trey Zuhn, and right guard, Layden Robinson, while starting cornerback Tyreek Chappell is also unavailable.

Report: Aggies WR Evan Stewart has sustained an ankle injury during spring practice

It was reported that Aggies star sophomore wide receiver Evan Stewart sustained an ankle injury during spring practice

Texas A&M started spring football off on a good start last Monday. The pivotal 2023 season starts and ends with roster construction and implementing the newest recruiting class to blend with the current veterans leading the program into the season.

However, injuries in spring practice, especially to some of the more vital members of the roster, can hinder development opportunities. Yet, the positive news is that the regular season is still five months away so the healing process can complete its process before wins and losses come into play.

According to a source and a post on social media, Aggies starting wide receiver Evan Stewart, who is entering his sophomore season, has reportedly sustained an ankle injury during spring practice, likely ending his spring football season.

Without knowing the severity of the injury, assumption or speculation is inappropriate, and we’re wishing Stewart a speedy recovery in the coming months ahead of what should be a monster 2023 season for the ascending superstar talent.
