Aggies top Horned Frogs to win regional championship

Aggies advance to Super Regionals with a wild win over TCU.

Texas A&M and TCU have had some wild post-season baseball matchups, and Sunday nights Regional final was no different.

A&M fielding issues were the story in the early innings, as three Aggie errors helped the Horned Frogs take a 3-0 lead after 4 innings.

The Aggies finally got on the board themselves after two walks and a Ryan Targac single pushed Dylan Rock across the plate, and Austin Bost scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-2 after 6.

And that’s when things got weird.

It was the 7th inning where the A&M bats really woke up, as they put together 5 hits in the inning, including a 3-run bomb by Rock, and went to the 8th inning up 7-3.

But the lead didn’t last long, as TCU answered with 4 runs of their own, with Brayden Taylor delivering the big blow, a 3-run home run that tied the game at 7.

A&M took the lead again in the top of the 8th, before TCU took it back again in bottom half on a two-run Tommy Sacco homerun.

But the A&M bats that have been so clutch so many times this season, struck again in the top of the 9th. The names are familiar by now, Austin Bost, Ryan Targac and Troy Claunch got the inning started, and by the time Dylan Rock hammered a two-run double to right-center field, and Bost knocked him in on his second hit of the inning, the Aggies had a 15-9 lead.

Brad Rudis was able to record the final three outs, and the Aggies are on to the Super Regionals!

Aggies baseball tops Louisiana, advance to Regional Final

Aggies beat Ragin Cajuns, 9-6 to advance to Regional Championship round.

The Aggies baseball team kicked off the College Station Regional on Friday afternoon with an 8-2 victory over Oral Roberts, and Saturday evening, they took the field for their second round matchup against Louisiana. The Ragin’ Cajuns reached the matchup with the Aggies after beating TCU Friday night.

The scoreboard operator got a workout early in the game, as the Aggies put up 4 runs in the first inning, as both Ryan Targac and Brett Minnich had two run singles off Cajun’s starter Jacob Schultz. But the Cajuns wouldn’t let the Aggies run away, as they scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Heath Hood double.

Aggies starter Nathan Dettmer gave up runs in teach of the first three innings, and in all gave up 6 runs on 9 hits in 4.1 innings, and left the game with his team behind 6-4.

But the Aggies bullpen was able to steady the ship, and at the plate, the usual suspects pushed the Aggies back out in front. It started in the top of the 7th, as Targac, Troy Claunch and Minnich strung together three hits in a row to tie the game, and in the 8th, Austin Bost homered in Jack Moss to put A&M up 8-6. Kole Kaler added some insurance with a solo homerun in the 9th, and Minnich made a diving catch in right field in the bottom of the inning to finish off the game.

The Aggies will face the winner of the Ragin Cajun’s rematch with the TCU Horned Frogs on Sunday evening, with two chances to punch their ticket to the Super Regional round.

Aggies baseball land #5 overall NCAA tournament seed

Aggies land #5 overall seed in NCAA baseball tournament

The Aggies baseball team had an incredible season, winning the SEC west regular season championship, and making a trip to the SEC tournament semifinals, where they lost to the Florida Gators.

With the semi-final loss, the Jim Schlossnagle and the fightin Texas Aggies baseball team turned their attention to the NCAA tournament. It was an almost certainty that the Aggies would be hosting a regional, but there was some uncertainty regarding exactly where their tournament seeding would fall.

On Monday, the NCAA released the tournament bracket, and the Aggies received the #5 overall seeding in the tournament.

The College Station Regional will feature the following teams:

  1. Texas A&M
  2. TCU
  3. Louisiana
  4. Oral Roberts

The Regionals will take place the weekend of June 3rd through June 6th.

Aggies fall to Florida in semi’s of SEC tourney

Texas A&M baseball’s run in the SEC tournament ended with a loss to the Gator’s on Saturday night.

The Texas A&M baseball team earned a trip to the SEC tournament semi-finals with a comeback win over the Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday night. That loss pushed Alabama to the losers bracket for a game against the Florida Gators on Saturday morning.

Florida powered past Alabama 11-6, to advance to the semi-finals where the Aggies awaited.

Unfortunately for A&M, the Gators Saturday scoring barrage continued into the evening.

It started in the top of the 2nd when Jud Fabian hit solo homerun off Aggie starter Robert Hagen, and continued with runs scored in six consecutive innings. Altogether, Aggie pitchers gave up nine runs, on nine hits, and walked six, while their defense committed two errors.

Offensively, for the first time in what feels like weeks, the A&M bats fell silent, only seven Aggies reached base, and only Ryan Targac managed an extra-base hit with his 9th inning double, after the game was out of reach.

The loss put an end to the Aggies SEC tournament run, and now Jim Schlossnagle’s team will wait to find out their NCAA tournament seeding.

Aggies roll, Tide blows lead in SEC tournament

The Texas A&M baseball team mounted a huge comeback in the third round of the SEC tournament to beat Alabama and advance to the semi-finals.

The Aggies baseball team put together a dominant performance against the Florida Gators in the second round of the SEC conference tournament on Thursday morning, advancing them to a third round tilt with the Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday evening.

After Micah Dallas put together a stellar pitching performance on Thursday, the Aggies turned to their ace Nathan Dettmer on Friday, but in unusual fashion the A&M defense gave Dettmer no help committing 4 errors leading to 4 runs in the first inning and a third before Dettmer was removed for Jacob Palisch.

Palisch lasted 2.2 innings and gave up 2 more runs as the Aggies fell into a 6-1 hole in the by the end of the fourth inning.

But that’s when the Aggie bats woke up, and you might say, the tide turned.

Dylan Rock got the Aggie comeback started with a three-run homer in the top of the fifth, to pull the Ags within two, and Kole Kaler singled in the top of the 6th to drive in two more and tie the game, and Jack Moss and Rock were both hit by pitches, driving in A&M’s 7th run, and giving them their first lead of the night.

Reliever Chris Cortez was able to keep the Bama bats grounded through the 5th and 6th innings allowing the A&M stampede the chance to pull in front, and in the top of the 7th, they blew the game open, on another RBI single from Kaler, and a three run bomb by Trevor Werner pushed the lead to 11-6.

The tide pulled to within 3 in the bottom of the inning, but it was too little too late, and the Aggies advanced to the Semi-finals, sending Alabama to the losers bracket.

A&M will await the winner of an elimination game between Alabama and Florida on Saturday morning, who they’ll face Saturday evening with a spot in the championship on the line.

Aggies baseball bests the Gators in SEC tournament opener

Aggies baseball bests the Gators in SEC tournament opener

The Aggies baseball team finally got to kickoff their Southeastern conference tournament journey on Thursday morning after weather delays pushed their game from the Wednesday evening slot.

The Florida Gators beat the South Carolina Gamecocks in the first round of the bracket on Tuesday, setting them up for a second round matchup with the Aggies.

Aggies starter Micah Dallas was very sharp on the mound, and reliever Joseph Menefee matched him, as the two combined to allow only one Gators basehit, while the Aggie bats flexed their muscles in the middle innings, capped by a seven run sixth inning featuring three A&M homeruns, on their way to a 10-0 win over the Gators.

The Aggies will matchup with the Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm on SEC Network.

Aggie baseball SEC tournament debut delayed

Rain delay forces A&M to wait one more day for their SEC tournament opener.

The Texas A&M baseball team clinched the SEC West regular season championship when they won two out of three against the Ole Miss Rebels. Their regular season performance earned them a first round bye in the Southeastern conference tournament, and when the Florida Gators beat the South Carolina Gamecocks 2-1 in the first round on Tuesday, it set up the Aggies matchup with the Gators in the second round.

The matchup was originally scheduled to take place Wednesday evening, but with inclement weather rolling through Hoover, Alabama, the site of the tournament, the game was delayed to Thursday morning at 9:30 am CT.

Micah Dallas is the likely starting pitcher for the Aggies as  he was scheduled to be the A&M starting pitcher for the original Wednesday night slot.

The game will be aired on SEC Network,

Aggies baseball completes sweep of Mississippi State

Aggies pull out the brooms, sweep Mississippi State

The Texas A&M baseball team came into their penultimate regular season SEC series on a roll. With five consecutive series wins under their belts, and the #10 slot in the national rankings, the Aggies had already announced their presence to the nation as a contender on the diamond.

But they saved their best performance for their home conference finale, a weekend tilt at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park with the defending national champion Mississippi State Bulldogs.

The weekend started with what has become the Aggies’ specialty of late, a comeback win capped off by a Troy Claunch bases loaded double  in the bottom of the 7th inning to put A&M out in front 8-7, a lead they wouldn’t squander.

On Saturday, the story was similar, A&M fell behind 4-0 in the top of the third, but Dylan Rock homered in the bottom half of the inning, and Trevor Warner hit a bob of his own in the 5th to bring the Aggies to within a run. A 7th inning double by Jack Moss put the Aggies up 6-5, and after the Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the 8th, Ryan Targac knocked a two-bagger of his own to give the home team a 7-6 lead, and the Aggies clinched the series with a 9-6 come from behind win.

And on Sunday, with a chance to clinch their first SEC series sweep since 2019, the Aggies put together the most complete performance of the weekend. Offensively, it was the usual suspects who put the Aggies out in front, as Claunch, Targac, and Werner, with some help from right fielder Brett Minnich, put together a 4th inning rally to put A&M ahead 3-1. By the 7th inning, it was 6-1 Aggies, but the Bulldogs strung together two hits, and a walk to make it 6-2 with two men on base with cleanup hitter Hunter Hines at the plate.

That was when coach Jim Schlossnagle called on sophomore Will Johnston out of the bullpen, and Johnston slammed the door shut on any hopes the Bulldogs had, striking out 5 of the 7 batters he faced without allowing a single baserunner to close the game out, and clinch the sweep.

The sweep moves the Aggies to 33-16 on the year, and 17-10 in conference play, and they will finish their regular season schedule with a three-game series against Ole Miss as the attempt to win the SEC West, and position themselves for a deep post-season run.

Aggie baseball wins 5th straight SEC series

Aggies baseball takes two of three from South Carolina, winning a 5th consecutive SEC series.

The Texas A&M baseball team hosted the Gamecocks of South Carolina for a weekend Southeastern Conference tilt at Blue Bell Park, and the fireworks ensued.

The Aggies, looking to extend their hot streak of four consecutive conference series wins, got off to a great start on Friday evening, scoring 16 runs, powered by five long balls. Sophomore Nathan Dettmer wasn’t as sharp on the mound, as in weeks past, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits in only 4.2 innings, but the A&M bats made sure it didn’t matter. Joseph Menefee earned the win, pitching 3.1 innings of 2 hit, 1 run ball, as the Aggies took Game 1 by a score of 16-4.

Saturday afternoon got off to a rougher start, as the Gamecocks jumped out to a 9-0 lead after 4 innings, but the Aggies came roaring back, scoring 5 in the 5th including a Ryan Targac grand slam. After scoring one more in the 7th, the Aggies plated 5 more in the 8th to take a 1 run lead going into the 9th.

A Braylon Wimmer home run and an Aggie throwing error put South Carolina back in front 12-11 going into the bottom half of the ninth, where it was Brett Minnich’s turn to play the hero, with his walk-off two-run homerun, giving the Aggies a 13-12 comeback win, and providing an opportunity to secure a sweep on Sunday afternoon.

The sweep effort came up short as the Gamecocks scored 9 runs on homeruns by 5 different players, and held the Aggies to only 4 runs to take the series finale and avoid being swept out of College Station. But the Aggies had clinched their 5th consecutive conference series win with only a matter of weeks until the end of the regular season.
