Marcus Freeman said Notre Dame believed the hype

Can’t let a good win get to your head

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman told ESPN earlier this week that the Fighting Irish fell to Northern Illinois in a massive upset because his team believed the hype it generated after a tough win at Texas A&M.

This author had that same thought the instant NIU blocked a second Mitch Jeter field-goal attempt to seal the Huskies’ win.

After beating the Aggies in a hostile environment on the road in the season opener, Notre Dame was being penciled in for a home game in the first round of the College Football Playoff. College players are human and can’t fully isolate themselves from media, whether it’s the news media or social media.

Not only that, but this Notre Dame squad has some relatively inexperienced players at key positions. That’s a recipe for players to start believing that they’ll roll out of bed and win, especially against an unheralded team like NIU.

It’s also a recipe for the Irish to underestimate an opponent. The Huskies might be a contender for the MAC championship — they are now ranked in the AP Top 25 after beating Notre Dame.

“This is the first time in my three years as a head coach that we have won the big game early in the season,” Freeman said. “Two losses to Ohio State and then all of a sudden, we win and everybody says, ‘Hey, you’re going to the playoff. You’ve got an easy schedule.’ We all hear it, and I think we started to believe that.”

“There is a physical approach to preparing for a game, and I think physically we prepared the right way,” he said, “but there’s also a mental approach and a mindset that you have to have every single week, and I think that’s where we failed.”

It’s good that Freeman is aware of the problem and the part it played in one of the worst losses in program history. Now it has to get fixed — or Notre Dame will find itself outside the playoff looking in. And Freeman might find himself unemployed.

Instant reaction to Texas A&M football team win over McNeese on Saturday

The Texas A&M football gets back on track in dominate 52-10 win over McNeese at Kyle Field Saturday afternoon

Fans in Kyle Field had much to cheer for this weekend as they witnessed the Texas A&M football team putting McNeese away early with a lopsided victory.

The Aggies (1-1) got back on track in all aspects of the game, beating the Cowboys (1-2) by a final score of 52-10 on Saturday afternoon in Bryan-College Station. A&M moves to 2-0 in their match series and picks up their first win under new head coach Mike Elko.

As expected, A&M came out and dominated McNeese in all areas on the field. Overall, the offense looked efficient, and Conner Weigman’s accuracy was much better this weekend. There were a few opportunities to go deep that the coaching staff probably would have liked to see him take, but he made up for it with some head-up running.

Conner finished the day by halftime, going 11/14 for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns. Le’Von Moss and Amari Daniels did a lot of the heavy lifting, combining for 159 yards and 4 touchdowns behind a stout offensive line. True freshman Terry Bussy also scored his first collegiate touchdown with a 65-yard scamper.

The Aggies’ next game is against Florida at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainsville, FL, on ABC on Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Notre Dame’s Week 1 win makes believer out of pundit

Pundits and analysts believe Notre Dame’s victory against Texas A&M was no fluke.

It’s easy to overreact to the first game of the season, so most analysis should be consumed with that in mind. That said, Notre Dame did have to face a tough test early and the Fighting Irish’s 23-13 triumph over the Texas A&M Aggies has impressed more than a few observers.

On3Sports’ J.D. Pickell praised the Irish as a “Mature/salty team with zero flinch” and said that the win/the Irish are “gritty over pretty.”

He also said that we, as fans and observers, can trust that the Irish weren’t a fluke in Week 1 and will be in the playoff hunt all season.

He also added “I love everything about Notre Dame,” praising the maturity of the roster while noting seven defensive players are grad students.

Notre Dame is already creating playoff buzz.

Pickell did point out that Florida State and USC could give the Irish fits, but he also thinks that even if the Irish finish 10-2, they will be in the College Football Playoff.

Hotel pricing in South Bend skyrockets as Notre Dame playoff talk increases

Notre Dame has only played — and won — one game, but optimism is already spreading throughout South Bend, as evidenced by these hotel prices.

Hotels near the Notre Dame campus are already preparing for the Fighting Irish to host a game in the College Football Playoff.

Prices for the weekend of the scheduled first round are quite high, at least according to X.com (formerly Twitter) user College Football Watcher.

The first round of the CFP is set for December 20-21.

Notre Dame’s strong 23-13 win against Texas A&M on the road in a hostile environment and its two-place rise in the AP Top 25 are certainly playing a part, as are stumbles by other potential playoff teams like LSU and Florida State.

There’s a long way to go in the season, of course, so it might be too early for fans to be booking rooms in South Bend. Then again, most hotels won’t charge a credit card this far in advance, so perhaps some folks are just happy to stake a claim, just in case.

Does this College Football Playoff prediction have Notre Dame slotted correctly?

Notre Dame’s big win is leading analysts to suggest the Irish will have a good playoff seed.

Only one game has been played, but Notre Dame’s statement win at Texas A&M has the pundits and College Football Playoff bracketologists giving the Fighting Irish high marks.

On3 Sports’ Andy Staples has the Irish getting a five seed and playing UNLV in the CFP.

Notre Dame will never be able to get a better seed under this current format. Since the Irish are independent they can’t play in a conference championship game, and the top four seeds go to conference champions.

Staples believes that the growth shown by a young offensive line combined with a talented, experienced defense will set the Irish up for a shot at running the table.

The schedule certainly looks favorable right now, especially as Florida State struggles — the Seminoles were supposed to be the biggest challenge on the slate. That said, Louisville did beat the Irish last year and is currently in the top 25, and Georgia Tech, which beat Florida State, has snuck into the rankings. Long-time rival USC beat LSU this weekend and lurks just outside the top 10.

Florida State could rebound, too.

On the other hand, the Irish are home against Louisville and Florida State.

Things can — and will — change from week to week. But for now, at least one analyst is giving the Irish a good shot at the fifth seed.

Here’s how the Notre Dame defense held Texas A&M’s QB in check

Here’s what the Fighting Irish defense did to stifle Texas A&M’s quarterback.

Notre Dame won a defensive struggle against Texas A&M 23-13 on Saturday, and what the Fighting Irish defense did to Aggies’ quarterback Conner Weighman is a big part.

Pro Football Focus gave Weigman the worst passing grade in the nation, with a 28.0 mark.

The Aggies overall offensive grade wasn’t much better at 29.0

Give the credit to the Notre Dame defense, which despite self-destructing with some penalties that led to the Aggie’s game-tying touchdown, was stingy most of the night. The Irish D continued to bailout the offense, which was inconsistent early, until the offense was able to come up with the big plays needed to win.

Where did the Oklahoma Sooners land in Locked On SEC’s updated Power Rankings?

Where did the Oklahoma Sooners land in Locked On SEC’s conference power rankings for week 2?

The Oklahoma Sooners are coming off of a 48-point week one win over an overmatched Temple Owls team. Led by a dominant defensive effort, the Sooners earned a bump in both the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25.

But that isn’t the only place the Sooners saw a bump. Locked On SEC’s Chris Gordy has been covering the SEC for a long time and has a good feel for the conference as a whole. He has the Sooners ranked No. 7 in the conference.

The Sooners moved up one spot after LSU’s loss to the USC Trojans on Sunday night.

They’re right behind the Tennessee Volunteers, who the Sooners will see in the SEC debut on September 21. The following week, Oklahoma will go on the road to take on the Auburn Tigers for their much anticipated first-ever SEC road trip. Aside from Auburn, the only team the Sooners play this year that is ranked behind them is South Carolina.

The Gamecocks struggled with Old Dominion in week one. Even though they got the win, it was so unimpressive that they came in at No. 16 in Gordy’s power rankings.

No surprise who sits at the top of the SEC power rankings, with Georgia coming in at No. 1 in both of the major national polls. Texas is No. 2 in the conference. SEC and national analysts are very high on the Longhorns heading into the season. But given the turnover on offense, they still have a ton to prove, in my opinion.

https://twitter.com/LockedOnSEC/status/1831036984087007634

We’re higher on the Sooners in the SEC early in the season. Oklahoma is my No. 4 team in the conference behind Georgia, Alabama, and Ole Miss. Though there are a lot of OU doubters out there, this is a team with a defense to make a ton of noise in the SEC despite it being their first year in the league.

But the Sooners will get their opportunity to prove it in the coming weeks.
