Texans run game will be a storyline in training camp

The Houston Texans’ rushing attack will be one of the storylines worth watching throughout training camp.

While the performance of second-year quarterback Davis Mills and the evolution of Smith’s patented Tampa 2 defense will be storylines fans will be following throughout camp, there is another thread to follow that is also integral to the Texans’ success in 2022.

According to Eric Edholm from NFL.com, one of the storylines worth watching in Texans training camp is the progression of the team’s rushing attack.

The Texans’ ground game was a disaster last season, ranking dead last in rushing yards, yards per carry and rushing scores. Rex Burkhead is back after leading a late-season upset over the Los Angeles Chargers, but he’ll be pushed for the starting role by injury-prone ex-Colt Marlon Mack and fourth-rounder Dameon Pierce. Offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton has said he wants balance on offense to help Mills and Co., but we likely must wait for camp and the preseason to figure out who will emerge in the backfield.

Burkhead had the only 100-yard rushing performance for the Texans last year in Houston’s 41-29 win over the Chargers at NRG Stadium in Week 16. Yet it wasn’t enough for general manager to be satisfied with the state of the run game, which necessitated the drafting of Pierce.

Pierce, who scored nine rushing touchdowns and generated 5.7 yards per carry last season, figures to take over as the feature back in Houston’s running back stable. The question comes down to when Pierce will supplant Burkhead and Mack. Will the rookie have a convincing enough camp to take over by September? Will it take the slough of the regular season for offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton to load up the former Florida product?

If the Texans are able to emerge from camp with a more effective run game, it will make Mills’ job easier as he grasps the reins of the offense.

QB Deshaun Watson to report to Texans training camp to avoid $50K per day fine

Quarterback Deshaun Watson will reportedly show up to Houston Texans training camp just to avoid the $50K per day fine.

One of the first big training camp storylines is starting to get more pages written in the script.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson will report to the Houston Texans for training camp. In doing so, Watson avoids the $50,000 per day fine for missing camp. However, the former 2017 first-round pick is still adamant with his trade demand, which was requested in early January.

The ball is also now in the court of the NFL as they have Watson under investigation regarding his involvement as a defendant in a lawsuit alleging he sexually assaulted 22 women.

On June 14 in an interview with “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM], general manager Nick Caserio said the club would make decisions with regards to Watson as they got more information on the situation.

“I don’t really have any additional comments about anything,” said Caserio. “I think we’re respectful of what’s happening. We’re respectful of the process and everybody that’s involved. So, again, the most important thing is for all of us — coaches, players, myself included is to focus on the things that we can control, and as we get more information, as we get closer to training camp, then we’ll try to make the best decision for the Houston Texans, whatever that entails.”

Watson reporting for camp is a big piece of information for the Texans. The onus is now on Caserio and first-year coach David Culley to make the best decision for the team.

Is running back the Texans’ most important position battle to start training camp?

The Houston Texans have a plethora of positions up for grabs in training camp. However, running back may be the biggest battle.

The Houston Texans have a bevy of positions they need to square away during training camp. The most visible position Houston has to figure out where to go is at quarterback, what with the situation surrounding Deshaun Watson.

However, that may not be the biggest position battle on the roster.

According to Tom Blair of NFL.com, the most important position battle going on with the Texans to start camp is running back where Houston has three Pro Bowlers vying for the starting job.

The Texans’ apparent general offseason strategy of just signing a whole bunch of guys is perhaps best illustrated by the running back room. Houston added not one but two former 1,000-yard rushers (Mark Ingram and Phillip Lindsay), along with a player who has averaged 88 touches over the past five seasons (Rex Burkhead), to a ground attack that already featured theoretical do-everything back David Johnson. Loading up on bodies is not a bad way to try to quickly improve (or at least patch up) a talent-poor roster, especially for a team dealing with an extreme dearth of draft capital. There’s probably even room for at least three of these backs to contribute this season — but the process of allocating snaps will begin in camp. Of the options, the 26-year-old Lindsay would seem to offer the most juice. Though the team is not committed to him beyond this year, Lindsay has a chance to establish himself as a part of whatever core the new Houston regime ends up trying to build.

The expectation is Ingram will have the first crack at the starting job due to his familiarity with new coach David Culley. However, football is a young man’s game, and Lindsay could have the talent and youth necessary to take the lead role at running back by the end of camp.

Reid was very impressed with the locker room upon entering, calling it “cold.”

The lockers were filled with Texans jerseys and uniforms, prompting Reid to say that they could play a game tomorrow.

“I’m all ready to go,” Reid said.

“I love new things,” defensive end Jonathan Greenard said. “Who doesn’t love new things? So when I came out here and it wasn’t the same locker room, I’m shocked. I’m excited just to get started. We definitely have a long way to go, but this is definitely a great start.”
