Texans TE Brevin Jordan took more fourth quarter snaps than Dalton Schultz

The snap counts indicate that Brevin Jordan saw more playing time with the Houston Texans in the fourth quarter of Week 12 than did Dalton Schultz.

The unique self-centeredness of fantasy football can still be beneficial to the framework of rooting for any one of the NFL’s 32 teams. With the amount of stats that fantasy managers track, they are bound to find trends that could help fans.

According to Nathan Jahnke from Pro Football Focus, one trend that seems to be developing on the Houston Texans is third-year Brevin Jordan getting snaps over six-year veteran Dalton Schultz, who signed a one-year contract in free agency.

Jordan had 16-of-20 tight end snaps, and just one short of Schultz’ 22 snaps in 11 personnel. The former Dallas Cowboys 2018 fourth-rounder was playing over 10 times more snaps in 11 personnel than Jordan over the previous 11 weeks, according to Jahnke.

Fantasy managers would no doubt want to keep tabs on the situation. However, it would be a fascinating position battle for Texans fans to watch to see if one of their younger players can solidify a starting spot. Jordan caught one pass for nine yards on two targets compared to Schultz’s one for two on two targets.

WATCH: Texans QB C.J. Stroud hits TE Brevin Jordan for touchdown against the Jaguars

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud connected with tight end Brevin Jordan for a 4-yard touchdown in Week 3 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In order for the Houston Texans to complete the rebuild, it will have to be a youth movement.

Clutch City sports fans saw more of the young leading the way as rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud connected with third-year tight end Brevin Jordan — still on his rookie contract — for a 4-yard touchdown Sunday afternoon at TIAA Bank Field.

The Texans struck first in Week 3 as Dameon Pierce scored a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Houston added to their lead as Stroud executed a perfect scoring throw.

Jordan adds to his touchdown total, as it was his fourth of his career. The former 2021 fifth-round pick had scored a touchdown since his rookie season.

Texans work out TE Anthony Firkser, RB Darrel Williams among others

The Houston Texans worked out former Tennessee Titans tight end Anthony Firksey among others as Week 2 kicks off.

With a commitment to constant improvement comes continuous pursuit of bettering the roster. One of the ways the Houston Texans can upgrade their roster and practice squad is by taking a look at available talent not currently with any NFL team.

The Texans held workouts for six players Friday. There was a theme of skill positions involved as the Texans worked out two tight ends, two running backs, a receiver, and a quarterback.

Here is a look at the six veterans the Texans took a look at as part of their workouts.

Texans add former Ohio State TE Nick Vannett, release DE Demone Harris

The Houston Texans have signed former Ohio State tight end Nick Vannett and released defensive end Demone Harris.

The Houston Texans have added a veteran tight end to the roster after all.

As the club works through second-year Teagan Quitoriano coming off the physically unable to perform list and third-year Brevin Jordan battling a hamstring injury, the Texans signed Nick Vannett Wednesday.

Vannett, 30, is on his sixth NFL team after the Seattle Seahawks drafted him in Round 3 in 2016. The former Ohio State product stayed with the NFC West club three games into the 2019 season before playing the last 13 with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 2020, Vannett played for the Denver Broncos before spending the next two seasons with the New Orleans Saints through three games. The rest of Vannett’s 2022 season was spent with the New York Giants where he played six games.

The Texans also released defensive end Demone Harris, who had played four games for Houston since 2021.

Report: Texans to work out former Jaguars TE James O’Shaughnessy

The Houston Texans are set to work out former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end James O’Shaughnessy.

The Houston Texans are looking to possible veteran help to bolster their thinning tight end group after five training camp practices.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans are set to work out former Jacksonville Jaguars tight end James O’Shaughnessy.

The 31-year-old was not on an NFL roster last season, albeit O’Shaughnessy spent all of 2022 with the Chicago Bears’ offseason program through the end of preseason. The Minnesota Vikings signed O’Shaughnessy to the practice squad in mid-November.

The former Illinois State product played 57 games for the Jaguars from 2017-21. O’Shaughnessy caught 104 passes for 1,022 yards and three touchdowns.

Dalton Schultz is recovering from a collision with safety Jimmie Ward on July 29. Third-year Brevin Jordan is working through a hamstring problem, and second-year Teagan Quitoriano remains on the physically unable to perform list.

Texans’ Dalton Schultz considered a top-10 tight end

Houston Texans tight end Dalton Schultz made CBS Sports’ top-10 list of tight ends entering the 2023 season.

The Houston Texans did not simply sign a tight end to fill a roster spot.

When the Texans signed former Dallas Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz in free agency, the expectation was to add a quality starter to give their starting quarterback a safety blanket and also help with the run blocking in offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik’s scheme.

According to Tyler Sullivan from CBS Sports, Schultz ranks as the ninth-best tight end in the NFL entering the 2023 season.

Dalton Schultz is still in Texas, but no longer has the Cowboys star on the side of his helmet after inking a deal with the Texans in free agency. While his final season in Dallas wasn’t as productive as his prior two campaigns, he’s still among the top pass-catching tight ends in the league and should be a solid outlet for No. 2 overall pick C.J. Stroud. He also is an underrated blocker, grading as the fifth-best run-blocking tight end in the league in 2022, per Pro Football Focus. One thing that was a bit concerning about Schultz last season was his decrease in efficiency. After a 2021 season where quarterbacks had a 118.6 passer rating when targeting him, it dropped to 77.8 in 2022. Schultz also had a career-high six drops last season.

New coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters on June 6 at organized team activities that he was pleased to have Schultz in the mix.

“He’s a big target and he’s very quarterback friendly,” said Ryans. “So that’s one thing playing against Dalton a lot in the NFC, he made a lot of big plays. So, I’m excited to see what he can do for us here.”

Schultz generated 57 catches for 577 yards and five touchdowns for Dallas through 15 games last season.

Dalton Schultz sets tone in the Texans’ tight end room

Dalton Schultz may be new to the Houston Texans, but he is already setting the tone inside the tight end room.

The Houston Texans could use a consistent, veteran presence at tight end.

Houston signed former 2018 fourth-round pick Dalton Schultz to a one-year contract in March. After being Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott’s security blanket, Schultz picked the Texans to continue his NFL career.

Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik told reporters May 31 that Schultz has been “just a professional” inside the tight end room.

“All the vets we’ve brought in have really helped a lot in bringing their position group along and kind of bringing the young guys with them, showing them what it’s like to work, to be a professional as far as what you’ve got to do every day, mentally, physically, on the field, how you work, how you go about your business, and he’s been awesome in that regard,” Slowik said.

Schultz’s on-field work also suggests an on-field upgrade. The former Stanford product generated 135 catches for 1,385 yards and 13 touchdowns through 32 games over the past two years. The 6-5, 244-pounder solidified the position in a way that had been lacking since Jason Witten left in 2019.

Schultz may not be comparable to a possible Hall-of-Famer, but he is definitely TE1 material.

“Then you just see a guy who knows how to run routes,” said Slowik. “He’s got a big frame. He knows how to catch. He’s fully invested in the run game. He’s been doing a great job.”

TE Dalton Schultz picked the Texans due to offensive scheme

TE Dalton Schultz picked the Houston Texans due to his familiarity with the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive scheme and what it could do for him.

Dalton Schultz had seen what the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive scheme had done for others, and he wanted a shot to be blessed, too.

The 49ers had knocked Schultz’s team out of the playoffs the past two seasons. Tight end George Kittle caught five passes for 95 yards as San Francisco moved on to the NFC Championship Game for the second straight season. Kittle has also notched four Pro Bowls and a first-team All-Pro from playing in the 49ers’ scheme.

When the Houston Texans hired the 49ers’ defensive coordinator, Schultz took note as DeMeco Ryans was a key part of why Schultz’s team was bounced from the playoffs the past two years.

“First and foremost, I am just grateful to have an opportunity to come and play, going into year six,” Schultz told reporters after organized team activities June 6. “Obviously, DeMeco coming in and he’s been the defensive coordinator who has kicked us out of the playoffs, kicked me out of the playoffs the last couple years. Having a defensive minded head coach with a scheme that I truly have respect for and believe in.”

It was only natural Ryans would bring the system from his former job with him. Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik has been the czar of installing San Francisco’s offense, which entices Schultz.

“Also, just the scheme coming over from S.F., just an offense that I have some familiarity with in my past,” Schultz said. “Obviously everyone has been able to see what they’ve been able to do in San Francisco, so having the opportunity to do similar things here is very intriguing for me at the tight end position especially.”

Schultz’s best season was in 2021 when he caught 78 passes for 808 yards and eight touchdowns.

Texans automatically upgraded tight end with signing Dalton Schultz

The Houston Texans instantly upgraded their tight end group with the signing of Dalton Schultz according to Pro Football Focus.

The Houston Texans have used short-term veteran deals to fill roster holes as general manager Nick Caserio has counted on the draft to bolster the long-term depth.

One area where the Texans actually found an upgrade with one of their short-term signings was Dalton Schultz.

According to John Kosko from Pro Football Focus, Schultz ranks No. 8 on their list of top-15 tight ends and is in the third tier of “good but needs pieces around to be great.”

Schultz’s two-year WAR ranks fifth at the position in addition to the fact that he has earned over 100 targets in back-to-back seasons, and has just one fumble over the same time span. His 16 touchdowns rank fourth, and his 81 receiving first downs are tied for fifth at the position. While he was allowed to leave in free agency from the Dallas Cowboys, it’s hard to argue with the numbers he’s put up.

The Texans have never been so close in recent seasons — not with Jordan Akins, Brevin Jordan, Pharaoh Brown, Darren Fells, Jordan Thomas, or Ryan Griffin. Houston may not have had a top-15 tight end since C.J. Fiedorowicz, whose 2016 campaign is still the last time the Texans had a tight end go over 500 yards receiving.

Admittedly Schultz won’t have a Pro Bowl quarterback throwing to him or have a Pro Bowl receiver out in the pattern along with him. However, Dameon Pierce generated 939 rushing yards through 13 games, and the Texans are doubling up on their commitment to the run with Devin Singletary. Schultz came from an offense that similarly placed an inordinate value on the run game when compared to today’s pass-heavy NFL.

Houston may not have enough pieces to help Schultz flirt with Pro Bowl nods as he did the past two seasons. However, the Texans have a better tight already atop their depth chart.

Texans sign TE Jordan Murray, waive P Joe Doyle

The Houston Texans have signed undrafted free agent tight end Jordan Murray and waived punter Joe Doyle from their offseason roster.

The Houston Texans continue to fine-tune their offseason roster.

The Texans announced Wednesday they have signed undrafted free agent tight end Jordan Murray.

The former Hawaii product caught 10 passes for 70 yards through 13 games in his final year in college football. The 6-5, 240-pounder originally played four seasons at Missouri State where he had 99 catches for 1,196 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career.

Houston also waived punter Joe Doyle. The Texans signed Doyle as an undrafted free agent. The 6-0, 200-pounder was a redshirt senior who spent 2021-22 with Memphis, and had an NIL deal with Opendorse. From 2017-20, Doyle was a punter at Tennessee in the SEC East.
