Texans OC Bobby Slowik vouches for OT Austin Deculus

Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik has confidence in second-year tackle Austin Deculus heading into Week 4.

The Houston Texans weren’t supposed to need Austin Deculus so soon.

As the organization formed its offensive line throughout the offseason, three-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil was to man left tackle with former 2019 first-rounder Tytus Howard locking down right tackle.

In a series of training camp and regular season injuries, Tunsil and Howard have played just one game between the two of them. The reserves are starting to take on attrition as backup Josh Jones has not practiced all week with a hand injury.

The Texans brought back Geron Christian, who started eight of 14 games active in 2021. However, Houston may have to rely on their final pick of the 2022 NFL draft to anchor the left side in Week 4.

Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik expressed to reporters Sept. 28 a sense of confidence in the former sixth-rounder from LSU.

“He’s been putting the work in over the first three weeks,” Slowik said. “We’ve noticed — we don’t really take — a lot of teams call it a scout team — guys that are out there doing cards. We don’t take that for granted. We coach that pretty hard. We evaluate it, we’re constantly talking to our guys about it to make sure their fundamentals and techniques can improve on a week-to-week basis.”

Deculus has been active for two games for Houston, although all 12 of his snaps were on special teams. Should the Texans use the Cy-Fair High School alumnus extensively on offense, he can count on support.

“Obviously, we’re not just going to put him out there,” said Slowik. “We’re going to make sure we help him in the run game and the pass game and that’s all the way across the board.”

The Texans face the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium. Pittsburgh (2-1) enters Week 4 with the most sacks with 13.

Texans elevate OT Austin Deculus from practice squad for Week 2 against the Colts

The Houston Texans have elevated OT Austin Deculus as part of their two practice squad elevations in anticipation for Week 2.

The Houston Texans are getting ready for a series of outcomes if Laremy Tunsil is unable to go in Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Texans signed center-guard Michael Deiter from the practice squad to the active roster. That should give Houston options along the interior as they possibly slide Josh Jones, who debuted last week at left guard, out to left tackle to replace the three-time Pro Bowler.

Houston also declared second-year tackle Austin Deculus as one of their two standard practice squad elevations. The other elevation is seven-year safety DeAndre Houston-Carson due to starters Jalen Pitre and Jimmie Ward being out.

The Texans also waived defensive end Derek Rivers from the active roster.

Report: Alabama OT Tyler Steen visits the Texans

The Houston Texans brought in Alabama tackle Tyler Steen for a visit.

The Houston Texans may be in the market for a tackle after all.

According to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network, the Texans brought in Alabama tackle Tyler Steen for a visit Wednesday.

Steen, 22, played as a graduate transfer with the Crimson Tide after playing from 2018-21 with Vanderbilt. The 6-6, 315-pound tackle started 13 games for Alabama last season while earning second-team all-SEC honors.

Checking out the tackle market in the draft would be prudent for Houston as right tackle Tytus Howard is entering the final year of his contract. The Texans also have tackle Charlie Heck, who has started 17 of his 35 games played, entering the final year of his contract.

Texans work out former Jaguars tackle K.C. McDermott

The Houston Texans have worked out former Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants tackle K.C. McDermott.

The Houston Texans are taking a look at adding depth at tackle.

Texans worked out former Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants tackle K.C. McDermott according to a league source.

The former 2018 undrafted free agent from Miami played 16 games for the Jaguars, starting in one of them. All 16 of McDermott’s activations came in the George Warhop era from 2020-21. From 2019-21 Warhop, who is the Texans’ offensive line coach, served in the same capacity for Jacksonville under coaches Doug Marrone and Urban Meyer.

McDermott is 6-5, 311 pounds. The Giants signed him to their practice squad Sept. 12 and released him on Sept. 20. McDermott did not make the final cuts for the Jaguars at the end of the 2022 preseason.

Texans RT Tytus Howard appreciates critiques from LT Laremy Tunsil

Houston Texans right tackle Tytus Howard says that he appreciate it when left tackle Laremy Tunsil critiques his play.

Tytus Howard was a 2019 first-round tackle expected to protect the franchise quarterback.

As the Houston Texans assembled their offensive line throughout that offseason and training camp, it became apparent they needed to upgrade even more, which is how Laremy Tunsil ended up joining the Texans at the end of the 2019 preseason.

Tunsil and Howard became friends, and they shared in common their high draft status as Tunsil was previously the Miami Dolphins’ 2016 first-rounder.

“We’re friends here and outside of here,” Howard told reporters Aug. 23 after practice at Houston Methodist Training Center. “It’s always good to develop friendships outside of football, and I think me and him have got that. It only helps us when we’re on the field.”

What Howard appreciates most from Tunsil is the two-time Pro Bowler’s willingness to offer critiques on his play at right tackle.

“You can get criticism from your coaches and stuff like that, but nothing is like when your teammates can critique you and help you with stuff,” said Howard. “I think it just feels different when you get it from your teammates. Me and Laremy, we’re good friends. He’s helped me a lot since he came here early on in my career, so, it’s good to have him here.”

With a dominant pass protector manning the left tackle job, the temptation is to model one’s game after that talent. However, Tunsil’s advice for Howard is the opposite.

Said Howard: “The main thing is don’t try to change my game to try to be like somebody else. Just develop my own game, be my own self when I’m out there on the field. I think that’s something I’ve honed in on since I’ve been at tackle, just developing my own game, being myself, and letting it come to me.”

The Texans finish up their preseason Aug. 25 at NRG Stadium against the San Francisco 49ers.
