Texans release QB Jeff Driskel

The Houston Texans have released quarterback Jeff Driskel as they finalize their 53-man roster.

The Houston Texans are rolling with two quarterbacks on their active roster.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans have released quarterback Jeff Driskel.

The former San Francisco 49ers 2016 sixth-round pick from Louisiana Tech wasn’t atrocious in preseason, even leading the Texans on a game-winning drive to defeat the New Orleans Saints in the preseason opener. Offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton told reporters on Aug. 16 that Driskel was “more than a hybrid quarterback.”

“I think Jeff has shown, even in that last drive, that he can play from the pocket,” said Hamilton. “He can make all the throws from the pocket. And he has the poise and the savvy to lead us to a win regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the fact that it was preseason. He just showed a lot of good attributes you look for in your quarterbacks.”

The Texans could look to bring back Driskel at a later time, according to Wilson’s report.

Texans release S Terrence Brooks

The Houston Texans have released safety Terrence Brooks as part of their moves to finalized a 53-man roster.

Not all former New England Patriots players have a spot on the Houston Texans’ roster in the Nick Caserio era.

According to Adam Schefter from ESPN, the Texans cut safety Terrence Brooks on Tuesday in their scramble to finalize their 53-man roster by 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

Brooks was with the Texans in 2021 and played 11 games for Houston, starting in three of them. The former Baltimore Ravens 2014 third-round pick knocked away a pass and tallied 21 combined tackles.

On Aug. 15, coach Lovie Smith told reporters that Brooks “stood out” during training camp when talking about the depth of the position. However, relative to the 53-man roster on Aug. 30, Brooks has been left out.

Texans coach Lovie Smith going with ‘gut feeling’ backed by data on roster cuts

Houston Texans coach Lovie Smith is in his 12th NFL season as a coach, and he has learned to go with a “gut feeling” bolstered by information.

Going from a 90-man roster during the spring down to a 53-man roster is not a surprise for Lovie Smith.

The Houston Texans coach is in his 12th season in the NFL as the man on the sidelines. Part of what helps him make his decisions is to clarify the goals for the players.

“What I’ve learned is that we kind of know the rules early on and numbers we have to get down to,” Smith told reporters Monday. “You let the players know early. ‘Guys, eventually we have to get to this. Everything you do from now on, we’re looking at.’”

The NFL Smith is in compared to what he entered in 2004 as coach of the Chicago Bears is one of information. With practices filmed, the coaching staff and personnel departments have plenty of information to decide who fits with the organization and who doesn’t.

Ultimately, Smith listens to an inner voice.

Said Smith: “What I’ve learned is there’s a gut feeling you go with, backed up by information, and we grade everything. We see them in every environment. In the end, I don’t think the decisions are that hard. It becomes clearer when you just let guys start playing.”

The only group of players that can prove mysterious are the rookies, according to Smith.

“Rookies you don’t know, you let them come in and you just start comparing them and they kind of tell you,” Smith said. “It’s not my first rodeo and that’s what I felt going into hard cuts. In the end, it’s pretty clear on what you need to do.”

The Texans need to get to 53 players by 3:00 p.m. Central Time Aug. 30.

Texans coach Lovie Smith says he feels for young players during roster cuts

Houston Texans coach Lovie Smith knows how hard it is to have to cut a young player after a solid preseason.

Houston Texans coach Lovie Smith has been the man on the sidelines for 11 previous NFL seasons, which means that he has also had the unenviable task of derailing the dreams of scores of young, talented players.

Such is the nature of the NFL, which demands that teams finalize their 53-man rosters each year. For the Texans, they will have to go from 80 players to 53 by 3:00 p.m. Central Time on Aug. 30.

Smith has compassion on the young players, particularly because of how much time was spent together inside NRG Stadium throughout the offseason workouts and training camp.

“You feel for guys,” Smith told reporters Monday. “I’m looking forward to all of the conversations because we all started at the same spot, and when you signed up for this, you knew this was a part of it, too. It’s never any fun when you tell someone that we’re going a different direction.”

The glimmer of optimism despite the rejection is the fact there are 31 other teams, and the adventure of playing in the NFL can continue in another city.

“If they’ve done everything they’re supposed to do and they can play, there’s 32 teams,” said Smith. “I haven’t only been at one team. If you’re a good coach or you’re a good player, there will be a spot for you somewhere.”

The Texans will have 16 practice squad openings available, which means a cut may not be the end of the line in Houston. However, players must remain on the waiver wire for a day before being signed back to Houston’s practice squad.

Texans 53-man roster projection ahead of the big cuts

Here is a look at a projection of the Houston Texans’ 53-man roster ahead of the final cuts on Aug. 30 at 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

The Houston Texans have to finalize their 53-man roster by 3:00 p.m. Central Time Aug. 30.

The work will be extensive as general manager Nick Caserio and the personnel department coordinate with coach Lovie Smith and his staff on the makeup of the team. It isn’t just a 53-man roster that the Texans will be keeping in mind as they also have 16 practice squad spots available.

In addition to evaluating their own talent, they will be looking at players across the other 31 rosters to see if there are good fits within NRG Stadium.

Here is a 53-man roster prediction. Keep in mind that while only nine players have been designated for the practice squad in this prediction, there are seven spots available Houston could use to sign outside talent, which tends to happen across the NFL after 53-man roster finalization.

Texans release FB Andy Janovich among 4 total transactions

The Houston Texans made four total transactions, including the release of fullback Andy Janovich.

The Houston Texans have a head start on their cut down from 85 players to 80.

The Texans released fullback Andy Janovich and linebacker Tae Davis on Sunday. Janovich had one target in the Texans’ 24-20 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 19 at SoFi Stadium. Davis had one tackle on special teams.

Houston also waived offensive lineman Myron Cunningham, an undrafted free agent from Arkansas.

The Texans also placed receiver Chester Rogers on the reserve/injured list. Rogers had three punt returns for 30 yards and a fair catch against the Rams along with a kickoff return for 20 yards.

The Texans have to get to 80 players by 3:00 p.m. Central Time on Aug. 23. The next roster cut down is to 53 players on Aug. 30.

Recapping the Texans’ roster moves to meet 85-man deadline

Here is a look at the roster moves the Houston Texans made to make it to 85 players by the first cut deadline.

The Houston Texans released or waived the following five players from its roster in accordance with the guidelines set by the NFL that training camp rosters must go from 90 players to 85 by 3:00 p.m. Central Time on Aug. 16.

Report: Texans to cut receiver Chad Beebe

The Houston Texans are cutting former Minnesota Vikings receiver Chad Beebe.

The Houston Texans have to cut from 90 players to 85 players by 3:00 p.m. Central Time on Aug. 16, and the club is already getting a headstart.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans are releasing former Minnesota Vikings receiver Chad Beebe.

Beebe was part of a glut of receivers working to provide depth behind Brandin Cooks, Chris Conley, Chris Moore, and Phillip Dorsett. The leukemia diagnosis of John Metchie provided an opportunity for receivers to get more reps and make an impression on the coaching staff.

The 5-10, 183-pound wideout had just one target in the 17-13 preseason win over the New Orleans Saints on Aug. 13 at NRG Stadium.

4 players from Raiders-Jaguars Hall of Fame Game the Texans should consider

The Houston Texans should consider these four players from the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game to add to the team after 53-man cuts.

The Las Vegas Raiders gave new coach Josh McDaniels a happy homecoming to Canton, Ohio, as they beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-11 Thursday night in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

Other than finding solace in a Jacksonville loss, the Houston Texans can also benefit from this game by finding some potential gems who may not make the Jaguars or Raiders 53-man roster.

Many of the players who participated in Thursday night’s commemorative game will have to be cut and Houston is certainly not in a position to say no to taking chances on players with potential. Below are four players that either played well tonight, fit a position of need or would excel in Houston’s scheme.

Houston Texans 90-man roster by uniform number

Here is a look at the Houston Texans’ 90-man roster as organized by uniform number.

The Houston Texans are roughly two weeks away from training camp.

General manager Nick Caserio has altered the coaching staff and roster as much as possible while also maintaining continuity from his first year in the front office to the second. This is why Lovie Smith went from defensive coordinator to coach, and also why quarterback Davis Mills is getting a fair shot as the starter in his second season in the league.
