Another Texans Podcast: Analyzing the Kenyon Green injury, final 53

@johnhcrumpler and @patrickstormhtx take a look at the Houston Texans’ final 53-man roster and also the odyssey that has been Kenyon Green in 2023.

This week on The Texans Wire’s “Another Texans Podcast” co-hosts John Crumpler and Patrick Storm covered the Houston Texans’ cutdown to 53 players and discussed 2022 first round pick Kenyon Green’s injury in depth in light of his season-ending move to IR.

What does the Green injury spell for the 2023 fate of Houston’s offensive line? What does it say about the future of Nick Caserio and his overall draft strategy the past two seasons? Could it have any significant impact on C.J. Stroud’s development?

Additionally, the duo has fun going over a suspicious Reddit post about the availability of Nick Bosa and how much he’d gather on the open market. You can listen to “Another Texans Podcast” on YouTube or anywhere you find your podcasts such as Spotify and Apple Music.

Why the Texans had to keep RB Mike Boone

The Houston Texans went with Mike Boone as their reserve running back behind Dameon Pierce and Devin Singletary.

The Houston Texans knew who they wanted as their top two running backs in Dameon Pierce and Devin Singletary. Even Dare Ogunbowale figured into the Texans’ plans with the running back stable.

However, one veteran back that grew on the coaching staff and personnel department throughout the offseason program and training camp was Mike Boone.

“Mike is an experienced player,” general manager Nick Caserio told reporters Aug. 30. “He’s taken advantage of his opportunities in games and I’d say he’s taken advantage of some opportunities in practice.”

The former Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos running back led all Texans on the ground with 16 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown through three preseason games. Boone was also the Texans’ leader in scrimmage yards in the past two exhibition contests.

“Mike has had a great attitude and he’s been consistent with his performance since he got here,” Caserio said. “Still a younger player even though he has four or five years of experience. It’s good to have those players here, but you can only give one the ball during the game, or probably two. At some point, you’re going to need those players.”

The most work Boone got on offense was in 219 when the Vikings started the 5-10, 205-pound back in two of 16 games active. Boone tallied 49 carries for 273 yards and a touchdown, setting career highs in all three categories.

3 surprising cuts the Houston Texans made

Here are three surprise cuts the Houston Texans made in the summation of @johnhcrumpler

On Tuesday afternoon, general manager Nick Caserio and head coach DeMeco Ryans were required to cut Houston’s roster down to 53 players. As such, the team saw a flurry of transactions as over 1,000 players from around the league were either waived or released after the preseason period.

It’s been 48 hours and Houston was able to use their waiver position to add two players to the roster, former Buffalo Bills Alex Austin and Nick Broeker, which means the roster is largely set for their Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

With time for reflection, who were the most surprising cuts for the Houston Texans?

Here are four facts to keep in mind regarding the formation of the Texans’ practice squad.

Houston Texans 53-man roster: Who made the cut?

Take a look at who made the cut for the Houston Texans.

The Houston Texans made it to 3:00 p.m. Central Time with their roster under 53 men, meeting the NFL’s deadline.

Here is a list at who the Texans decided to keep on their 53-man roster at the deadline. It is worth mentioning the Texans have to wait until 12:00 p.m. on Aug. 30 before they can construct their practice squad. The way the roster looks today may not be the final version when they enter Week 1 as there is still tinkering with injured players that must be finalized.

Nevertheless here is how the Texans made their way from 90 players in the offseason to 53 at the end of preseason. The list is unofficial.

Texans trade with Steelers for OL Kendrick Green

The Houston Texans traded with the Pittsburgh Steelers for offensive lineman Kendrick Green.

The Houston Texans are looking to outside talent to help with the attrition along the offensive line.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans are trading with the Pittsburgh Steelers to acquire former 2021 third-round pick Kendrick Green. The Texans are giving up a 2025 sixth-round pick.

While the injuries affecting left guard Kenyon Green and center Juice Scruggs are considered short-term injuries, and right tackle Tytus Howard is nearing a photo-finish return for Opening Day as he recovers from a broken hand, the Texans still need to solidify their offensive line reserves as they construct a 53-man roster.

Green, 24, started 15 games at center for the Steelers in 2021. Green moved to guard in 2022, but never saw any game day activations throughout the year.

Why the Seahawks should sign former Texans DT Roy Lopez

If the Seattle Seahawks can afford to wait, they should look into signing former Houston Texans defensive tackle Roy Lopez.

The Houston Texans are adjusting the composition of their interior defensive line as they cut down to a 53-man roster by Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans are releasing defensive tackle Roy Lopez with the designation of “waived-injured.” The Texans are expected to negotiate an injury settle with the former 2021 sixth-rounder, which will then allow him to join another team.

Lopez played 38 defensive snaps and four special teams snaps through the first two preseason games. Lopez missed the final game with a hamstring strain, although he should be ready to play in two to three weeks.

One team that should consider Lopez ought to be the Seattle Seahawks.

The NFC West club has two of their three nose tackles on the physically unable to perform list in Bryan Mone and Austin Faoliu. Cameron Young, a fourth-rounder, and Matt Gotel, an undrafted free agent, remain as the only healthy interior linemen on the roster.

Lopez is 6-2, 318 pounds, which is comparable to Young at 6-3, 315 pounds. The Seahawks would be able to utilize Lopez to take up space the same way they ask of their other nose tackles.

The former Arizona product also has considerable time on the job despite entering his third season. Lopez has started 29 games across 33 activations since entering the league, and has collected 67 combined tackles, 11 tackles for loss, five quarterback hits, 2.0 sacks, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup, and a safety.

If the Seahawks are willing to allow Lopez to get healthy, it could be a mutually beneficial situation.

3 reasons the Texans had to cut LB Christian Kirksey

The Houston Texans cut linebacker Christian Kirksey, and here are three readily identifiable explanations.

The Houston Texans decided to go in a separate direction and cut linebacker Christian Kirksey Aug. 28 as part of their efforts to finalize their 53-man roster.

Kirksey, 30, played 30 games for the Texans over the past two seasons, starting in 29 of them. The former Cleveland Browns 2014 third-round pick collected 137 combined tackles, 13 tackles for loss, nine quarterback hits, 3.0 sacks, 13 pass breakups, three interceptions, and three fumble recoveries.

The 6-2, 235-pounder was a decent fit for the Texans when they deployed their Tampa 2 the past two seasons. New coach DeMeco Ryans wanted to work with Kirksey despite the scheme change, but here three reasons why Kirksey won’t be in Houston in 2023.

CB Desmond King thanks Texans after being cut

Cornerback Desmond King thanked the Houston Texans for the past two seasons after being cut Aug. 28.

For Desmond King, the adventure won’t continue with the Houston Texans.

The former Pro Bowl cornerback was among the Texans’ cuts Monday. King took to X (formerly Twitter) to express gratitude for the city and fan base.

“THANK YOU HOUSTON,” King tweeted.

According to safety Jimmie Ward, King was one of the defensive backs who caught his eye when he signed with the Texans.

“They really impressed me when I got here,” Ward told reporters July 27. “‘Des’ King in the nickel —like, the dude is so athletic. I think he wears like a three-X glove. I knew he was good.”

King generated 127 combined tackles, 11 tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, five interceptions, 14 pass breakups, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries through 33 games for the Texans, 25 of which he started.
