GM Nick Caserio outlines Texans’ final preparation for 2023 NFL draft

Houston Texans GM Nick Caserio told @sportsradio610 how the last week will go as the team prepares for the 2023 NFL draft.

The 2023 NFL draft is less than a week away.

The draft in Kansas City represents one of the most optimistic moments in the past three years for the Houston Texans. With their twin first-round picks starting at No. 2 overall in a quarterback-heavy draft, the Texans can find their new franchise quarterback and use the remaining 11 picks to put the finishing touches on the roster.

General manager Nick Caserio visited with “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] April 20 and talked about the last week of draft prep.

Here is a look at how the final week before the draft will unfold for the Texans.

Texans GM Nick Caserio expects unpredictable Round 1 of 2023 NFL draft

Houston Texans GM Nick Caserio says that he expects for the first round of the 2023 NFL draft to be more unpredictable than people think.

Nick Caserio takes his draft information with a grain of salt.

The Houston Texans general manager joined “Payne & Pendergast” on Sports Radio 610 [KILT-AM] April 20 to talk about the state of the franchise heading into the 2023 NFL draft.

With a variety of draft rumors swirling about, Caserio explained how he processes the data.

“Some of this is grain of salt and you have to take it,” said Caserio. “Some may get more information than others. The reality is the people that have the information are getting the information from somebody. So, then you’re trying to reverse engineer why are they doing that. So, if you spend too much time doing that, you’ll spin yourself in circles. So, I would say trust the people you think have some semblance of an idea, and then the rest of it is a bunch of noise.”

Football fans can take it with their own grains of salt, but Caserio believes Round 1 won’t exactly go the way experts expect on April 27 in Kansas City.

Said Caserio: “I’ll say let’s see what happens this year, but I think this first round has the potential to be a little bit more unpredictable than people think. So, it’s really not about, okay, what a mock draft says or what somebody thinks, what matters in the end is what the team thinks, what they think is the best thing for their player, does that player fit what they want to do. It doesn’t matter where he was projected to go or what happened.”

The Texans have twin first-round selections at Nos. 2 and 12 overall. No doubt Houston will have some influence on how unpredictable Round 1 will be, especially since they may not be in the running for a quarterback with their highest selection.

“Ultimately, the team has to do what they think is in their best interest and not rely on some information on the periphery that may or may not matter,” Caserio said.

4 takeaways from Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio’s pre-draft press conference

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio held his pre-draft presser inside NRG Stadium. Here are four takeaways from the availability.

The 2023 NFL draft starts April 27.

The three-day event provides an opportunity for the Houston Texans to add critical pieces that could potentially complete the rebuild and have the moribund franchise competitive, even in the first season under rookie coach DeMeco Ryans.

The Texans have 12 picks overall. The first round will be fascinating for Clutch City sports fans as Houston possesses two Round 1 selections at Nos. 2 and 12 overall. The Texans can grab their franchise quarterback and also another playmaker.

General manager Nick Caserio met with the media at NRG Stadium April 17 to field questions about the state of the organization heading into the draft. Here are some takeaways from Caserio’s availability.

Texans GM Nick Caserio says he isn’t going anywhere

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio says he is not going anywhere after the 2023 NFL draft and intends to stay with the franchise.

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio says that he is not going anywhere.

Rumors stirred up on podcasts, the internet, and even broached on sports talk radio had swirled that the Texans would look to make a shakeup organizationally after the draft. As such, the innuendo was that Caserio would be done.

Caserio addressed the rumors during his opening statement during the Texans’ pre-draft press conference Monday inside NRG Stadium. The 47-year-old said he felt “embarrassed” to even have to address the subject, but did so at the outset to ensure it would not distract.

Caserio, who joined the Texans in January 2021, stated it has been a joy to work with new coach DeMeco Ryans, the third such coach Caserio has hired in his tenure.

Texans’ Nick Caserio ranks No. 24 in NFL.com GM power rankings

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio comes in at No. 24 in a recent NFL.com ranking of general managers across the league.

The Houston Texans have won seven games in the past two seasons with Nick Caserio as general manager. At some point, the team’s struggles to get out of the mud would sully Caserio.

According to Gregg Rosenthal from NFL.com, the Texans’ general manager ranks No. 24 overall in his power rankings of all GMs across the league. Even though Rosenthal notes that Caserio dealt with a year-long fiasco surrounding the franchise quarterback, the fact Houston is now on their third coaching hire in as many offseasons is a scarlet letter.

Caserio’s first two drafts have been average for the picks he had to work with. The volume of free agents brought in over the last two years rivals any team in football, with a decent hit rate. It’s up to new coach DeMeco Ryans and the incoming No. 2 overall pick to make all those moves look better.

The next general manager was the Denver Broncos’ George Paton, and then a crop of seven front office bosses in a “too new” category. In other words, Caserio is the second-worst general manager in the NFL among qualifiers.

What will help Caserio is having a great draft at the end of the month. Houston has tremendous optimism to complete the rebuild as they also have the No. 12 overall pick — obtained via 2022 offseason trade with the Cleveland Browns, thanks to Caserio no less — to either provide Ryans with a talented pass rusher on defense or take a spectacular wideout who can pair up with the quarterback Houston will presumably take with the second overall pick.

Thus far, Caserio has enjoyed the ride with Ryans and the new coaching staff as they prepare for the draft.

“It’s been a lot of fun to come to the office,” Caserio said at the NFL combine on Feb. 28. “The staff has been great to work with to this point. We know we have a lot of work in front of us. Nothing is going to happen overnight, but it’s been great to have him around. It really has.”

Why the Texans may not use all of their draft picks

The Houston Texans have 12 picks in the 2023 NFL draft. Don’t expect the team to use all of them for selections.

The Houston Texans have 12 picks in the 2023 NFL draft, tied for the most this year.

Houston also has the highest draft capital according to the Jimmy Johnson trade value chart. Even other such value charts have the Texans leading the entire league in draft capital.

With 21 open slots on the team’s 90-man roster, one would figure the Texans could afford to use all of their selections to infuse younger talent into a veteran laden roster.

Don’t count on it.

According to Brad Spielberger from Pro Football Focus, the Texans have traded up just once in the past two drafts with general manager Nick Caserio. Houston has shown more of a propensity to trade up, which they have done six times in the past two drafts.

One of the challenges that comes to trades during the draft is not every team is working with the same draft value chart; some are using the Jimmy Johnson chart while others have their own, according to Caserio.

“The issue you have is you’re trying to do a trade and their model says one thing and your model says another thing, so we’re speaking two different languages,” Caserio said Feb. 28 at the NFL combine. “How do we find a resolution? I think that’s more of an exercise for when we get into April. We’re positioned here. What would it cost to move up one spot? We’re at 12. What would it cost to move up a few spots? What would it cost to move back? We’ll look at all those.”

Houston has seven picks between Rounds 4-7, which is a prime area for the Texans to build packages to take specific players similar to their approach in the past two drafts.

Houston Texans continue their due diligence in changing uniforms

The Houston Texans provided a sneak peak at how they are changing their uniforms. Here is what @bigsargesportz learned.

HOUSTON — On Thursday, Houston Texans Chairman and CEO Cal McNair and senior vice president of marketing and communications Doug Vosik gave selected media members a sneak peek of the uniform changes they submitted to the NFL for 2024.

The franchise implored the thoughts and opinions of the fans and the community throughout the season to get a natural feel for the change.

“We knew that it was time for a change, and we want to make sure that the fans and players are an intricate part of that change,” said Vosik. “We listened what was being said in the locker room and also on all social media platforms and knew that we were on the right track.”

No details of the Texans’ uniform changes can be made public because they are still in the developmental stage. Still, from what the Texans Wire was able to observe, it was apparent that the team to a very active listening approach.

In September, McNair acknowledged to fans during a question-and-answer event held through Reddit that the team had planned on exploring new changes for 2024.

“We have already engaged the NFL to better understand the process to formally start a fan research study and the timeline and guidelines if the fan research steered towards change. No promises, but we will challenge everything, and we won’t be afraid to evolve,” said McNair.

The Texans received a very energetic response to their Battle Red helmets and uniforms they debuted against the Philadelphia Eagles in a primetime game on Thursday Night Football in Week 9.

Fans were also very enthusiastic when limited edition “H-Town” gear was made available in the team store in different variations of colors.

Houston Texans’ timeline to interview coaching candidates

The Houston Texans have a framework from the NFL on when they can interview coaching candidates throughout the playoffs. Here is what it looks like.

Houston Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair alluded to the interview process the club has to go through in order to find their sixth full-time coach in team history.

“The league has done a great deal of work to establish an equitable and inclusive head coach hiring process, which we fully support,” McNair said. “The structured process allows us to begin the head coaching interviews virtually this week, and we can begin interviewing candidates in person after the wild-card games.”

McNair noted there was a “strong list of potential head coach candidates,” and that he and general manager Nick Caserio would be “excited to work with them.”

Here is the timeline the Texans have to work with as mandated by the league when they request interviews with coaching candidates.

GM Nick Caserio describes what Texans are looking for in an ideal coaching candidate

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio broke down what the team is looking for in an ideal coaching candidate.

New year, new coach.

That has the been the mantra for the Houston Texans each January since 2021. The Texans are on their third coaching search in as many offseasons since Nick Caserio took over as general manager.

General managers don’t get as many swings at hiring coaches, especially not in the short amount of time Caserio has been with the Texans. The third hire has to be sure fire with a trend out of rebuilding mode, or else it could cost Caserio his job and keep Houston entrenched in the process.

Caserio outlined on Monday night’s presser what the organization is looking for in a coach and some of the process Houston will have to go through as they evaluate candidates.
