Report: Steelers releasing former first-round pick

The Steelers released Terrell Edmunds, marking his second departure from Pittsburgh after stints with multiple teams since 2023.

In what can only be described as shocking, to say the least, the Pittsburgh Steelers have released former first-round draft pick Terrell Edmunds, selected in the 2018 NFL Draft.

This marks the second time Edmunds has departed from the Steel City, as he left on his own terms in 2023 to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles during free agency.

Edmunds ultimately bounced around from Philadelphia to Tennessee and then to Jacksonville before returning to Pittsburgh in September 2024.

The former first-rounder made appearances in Weeks 4 through 8 for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2024 season, playing 63 defensive snaps. According to the infamous and always polarizing Pro Football Focus, Edmunds performed solidly in these four games, earning a respectable 71.7 grade.

It is disappointing that Edmunds’ second stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t pan out, but the former first-round safety is only 27 years old and still has some of his best football ahead of him.

Former Steeler could be back in the Steeler lineup vs Raiders

Terrell Edmunds could start for the Steelers on Sunday.

This week the Pittsburgh Steelers will be without safety Damontae Kazee Kazee suffered an ankle injury last week in warmups before the Steelers took on the Dallas Cowboys and tried to play through it. The injury got worse this will force him out of this week’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Without Elliott in the lineup, former and current Steelers safety Terrell Edmunds could be pressed into action. The Steelers signed Edmunds to the practice squad just over a week ago but his familiarity with the defense could allow defensive coordinator Teryl Austin to get him on the field more quickly.

On Wednesday, Kazee missed practice along with starting strong safety DeShon Elliott who is dealing with an ankle injury of his own. If Kazee and Elliott miss Sunday’s game, Edmunds could start alongside Minkah Fitzpatrick.

The Steelers selected Edmunds in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft. He started 75 games over six seasons with the Steelers. Edmunds bounced around between three teams since then but he’s back and could be a big part of the Steelers defense on Sunday.

Jaguars make practice squad signing to replace Terrell Edmunds

Jaguars make practice squad signing to replace Terrell Edmunds

The Jaguars identified their practice squad replacement for safety Terrell Edmunds, signing former Eagles cornerback Zechariah McPhearson on Tuesday.

Edmunds was signed away from Jacksonville’s practice squad by Pittsburgh Monday, after being elevated to the Jaguars’ active roster for Week 1 against Miami. He logged six defensive snaps, filling in for backup safety Daniel Thomas, who was ruled out of the game Saturday with an Achilles injury.

A fourth-round NFL draft pick by Philadelphia in 2021, McPhearson appeared in 37 total games with the Eagles before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury during the 2023 preseason. He was waived by the club this August.

McPhearson has recorded 30 tackles including one for loss and two defended passes in the regular season and two tackles in the playoffs.

McPhearson was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in Philadelphia’s 2022 season-opener, when he recovered an onside kick attempt and made two special teams tackles against Detroit in a 38-35 Eagles’ victory.

McPhearson joins the Jaguars after starting cornerback Tyson Campbell suffered a hamstring injury against Miami that Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson said will cause him to “miss some time.”

Former 1st-round Steelers’ safety reuniting with Pittsburgh

The Steelers are bringing back Terrell Edmunds.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing their former safety, Terrell Edmunds, off the Jaguars practice squad, per Tom Peliserro on Monday.

Edmunds started 75 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2018 to 2022.  The former first-round pick from the 2018 draft didn’t necessarily live up to first-round draft status.  However, he was a reliable starter opposite Minkah Fitzpatrick nonetheless.

The former Steelers’ safety left Pittsburgh in the 2023 offseason to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles.  His consistency was lacking and he bounced around to the Titans and Jaguars, until eventually coming back to Pittsburgh.

Terrell Edmunds joins his former teammate Minkah Fitzpatrick, along with a new face in DeShon Elliot, who made his impact felt on Sunday against Atlanta, and the reliable veteran Damontae Kazee, to form perhaps the strongest safety room in the league.

Report: Steelers sign DB off Jaguars practice squad

Report: Steelers sign DB off Jaguars practice squad

The Steelers are signing safety Terrell Edmunds away from the Jaguars’ practice squad and to their active roster, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday afternoon.

Edmunds was Pittsburgh’s first-round selection in the 2018 NFL draft. He spent five seasons with the Steelers and split the 2023 campaign between Philadelphia and Tennessee, before signing with Jacksonville in May.

Despite his seven tackles and two forced fumbles in the preseason, Jacksonville released Edmunds during NFL roster cutdowns in August and signed him to their practice squad.

With safety Daniel Thomas ruled out of Week 1 with an Achilles injury, Edmunds was promoted to the Jaguars’ active roster via standard elevation Saturday ahead of Jacksonville’s season-opening, 20-17 loss at Miami on Sunday.

Edmunds logged six snaps against the Dolphins and did not record a statistic.

Over 96 career appearances, Edmunds has accumulated 458 total tackles including 17 for loss, 7.5 sacks, six interceptions, 28 defended passes and one forced fumble.

Jacksonville now has one opening on its practice squad.

Jacksonville downgraded safety Daniel Thomas from questionable to out of its Week 1 matchup at Miami, prompting the Jaguars to add safety Terrell Edmunds to the active roster via standard elevation from the practice squad.

Thomas had an Achilles issue and appeared on the injury report as limited all week.

While Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson expressed Thomas was coming along as the week progressed, he ultimately was not cleared in time for the Jaguars’ season opener.

“He’s progressed,” Pederson said Friday. “We had a plan for him to work himself back into practice. We’ve got another day today and then see where he’s at. But we’re optimistic and hopeful that he can play.”

The loss of Thomas is notable, as he has taken the field for approximately 60% of Jacksonville’s special teams snaps each of the last four seasons.

Thomas recorded seven tackles on special teams and appeared in 15 games in 2023.

Edmunds, a seven-year NFL veteran, was selected No. 28 overall by Pittsburgh in the 2018 NFL Draft.

After five seasons with the Steelers, Edmunds signed with Philadelphia last year. He appeared in seven games with the Eagles before being traded to the Titans in late October, finishing the 2023 campaign in Tennessee.

The 27-year-old safety signed with Jacksonville in May and was placed on the practice squad in late August.

Across his career, Edmunds has appeared in 94 games, starting 79, accumulating 446 tackles, 28 pass deflections, 17 tackles for loss and six interceptions.

Report: Jaguars releasing DB with hope to reunite via practice squad

The Jaguars are releasing safety Terrell Edmunds but hope to sign him to their practice squad if he does not sign to another team’s 53-player roster, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Tuesday.

Edmunds, a former first-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2018, signed a one-year contract with Jacksonville in May. Before joining the Jaguars, he spent the first five seasons of his NFL career with the Steelers and split last year between Philadelphia and Tennessee.

Edmunds was a preseason standout with Jacksonville, logging seven tackles and two forced fumbles over 70 defensive snaps. His 28 special teams snaps were tied for third-most on the team this August.

Over 95 career regular season appearances including 79 starts, Edmunds has compiled 458 tackles including 17 for loss, 7.5 sacks, six interceptions, 28 defended passes and one forced fumble.

As of Edmunds’ release, Jacksonville has eight safeties on its roster before the NFL’s 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, 53-player deadline: Andre Cisco, Darnell Savage Jr., Antonio Johnson, Daniel Thomas, Andrew Wingard, Tashaun Gipson Sr., Adrian Amos and Josh Proctor.

Flowers, Edmunds signings continue Jaguars’ vital secondary rebuild

Tre Flowers, Terrell Edmunds signings continue Jaguars’ secondary rebuild

One important aspect of Jacksonville’s busy 2024 offseason has been the team’s necessary secondary rebuild.

The Jaguars released two starting defensive backs from last season earlier this year, cornerback Darious Williams and safety Rayshawn Jenkins, and have added six since, including four veteran free-agent signings and two rookie selections in the NFL draft.

The moves weren’t coincidental or business as usual.

They were intentional, a concerted effort by Jacksonville’s front office to revamp the back five of the Jaguars’ defense after the team allowed 239.8 passing yards and 1.59 passing touchdowns per game in 2023, both stats ranking No. 26 in the NFL.

The first addition, cornerback Ronald Darby, is expected to take over for Williams at outside corner, opposite Jacksonville’s 2021 second-round draft pick, Tyson Campbell.

Darby, a nine-season pro, has started 95 games in his career and tallied eight interceptions and 97 passes defended. Per Pro Football Reference, Darby allowed sub-50% completion percentages in coverage in 2022 and 2023, with a career-best 38.9% mark two years ago.

Safety Darnell Savage joined Jacksonville shortly after Darby, after five seasons with his drafted team, Green Bay. There, he accumulated nine interceptions and 32 pass breakups over 72 games and 69 starts.

Although he has been considered a replacement for Jenkins on the backend, next to safety Andre Cisco, Savage has been floated as a candidate to play nickel corner by Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson.

Despite obtaining those veterans, the Jaguars were widely projected to target another outside cornerback early in the 2024 NFL draft, leaving some analysts surprised when they waited until the end of Day 2 to address their secondary whatsoever.

Notably, Campbell is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2024, while Darby turned 30 years old in January.

They double-dipped at the position, though, taking nickel corner Jarrian Jones late in the third round and then picking outside corner Deantre Prince in the fifth round.

Both were five-year college contributors who participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl all-star game before the draft.

“I think what both Jarrian and Prince probably share as players is confidence in terms of their coverage ability, but also knowing how to use their athletic ability,” Shrine Bowl director of football operations and player personnel, Eric Galko, described Jones and Prince in an interview with Jaguars Wire.

“Some guys are athletic and don’t know how to use it, and they’re just guessing and trying to use their athleticism and kind of recover a lot, not necessarily maximizing it. I think both these guys know where they can get to on the field in coverage.”

The Jaguars have been similarly complimentary of the rookies and believe each can become an impact player in the secondary.

Still, Jacksonville thought it had room to improve. Accordingly, the club signed another pair of veteran defensive backs on Thursday, safety and former first-round pick Terrell Edmunds and cornerback Tre Flowers.

Flowers, in particular, provides a sense of familiarity as the most recent season of his six-year career was under the guidance of current Jacksonville defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen, who occupied the same role for Atlanta in 2023.

He appeared in 17 games with three starts last year, and has compiled four interceptions, 22 pass breakups and five forced fumbles over 90 games since 2018.

Edmunds could fill the safety role initially expected of Savage in 2023, with 79 starts at the position under his belt over six seasons. He’s recorded six interceptions, 28 pass breakups, 7.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss in that span.

Second-year Jaguar Antonio Johnson will vie for a starting safety role, too, after intercepting two passes and defending three as a rookie in 2023.

While it remains to be seen how the batch of new faces will perform as a unit, Jacksonville was wisely aggressive in acquiring defensive backs of varying positional fits, experience levels, and physical and athletic potential this offseason.

The unit added a combined 287 starts via free agency, patching holes in the Jaguars’ previously underwhelming secondary and, as a result, slowing down the pace of the incoming rookies’ development track.

Jones and Prince won’t need to be forced into action at cornerback early in their career — barring injury or if they prove to be equipped for pro ball immediately — with Campbell, Darby, Flowers and perhaps Savage at nickel available to start in 2024.

Jaguars add veteran DBs Terrell Edmunds, Tre Flowers

Jaguars add veteran DBs Terrell Edmunds, Tre Flowers

The Jaguars announced a trio of signings on Thursday afternoon, adding veteran defensive backs Terrell Edmunds and Tre Flowers and linebacker Ty Summers to their 2024 offseason roster.

Summers’ signing was reported Wednesday evening by Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette.

Jacksonville waived linebacker Dequan Jackson and waived/injured undrafted rookie wide receiver Wayne Ruby Jr. in corresponding transactions. The latter move was foreshadowed Wednesday by Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union.

Edmunds, a former first-round safety selection by Pittsburgh in 2018. He spent five seasons with the Steelers, and half of the 2024 campaign with Philadelphia before being traded to Tennessee.

Over 95 appearances and 79 starts, Edmunds has compiled 458 tackles including 17 for loss, 7.5 sacks, six interceptions, 28 defended passes and one forced fumble.

A college safety and 2018 fifth-round pick by Seattle, Flowers transitioned to cornerback with the Seahawks and occupied a starting role for over two seasons before a 2020 hamstring injury ruled him out of the rest of the season.

Flowers was waived by Seattle the following year and was claimed by Cincinnati around midseason.

He spent a year and a half with the Bengals in a depth role before signing with Atlanta and starting three games for the Falcons in 2023, under now-Jacksonville defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen.

Flowers has compiled 283 tackles including four for loss, two sacks, four interceptions, 22 passes defended and five forced fumbles over 90 games and 44 starts.

A look back at Eagles 2023 NFL free agent class

With 2024 NFL free agency set to begin in less than two weeks, we’re looking back at the Philadelphia Eagles 2023 free agent class

Coming off of their Super Bowl LVII loss to the Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles lost several starting players to free agency — C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Marcus Epps, T.J. Edwards, and Kyzir White.

Howie Roseman helped alleviate some of that loss by adding six veterans on one-year deals to help the Eagles return to the postseason in 2023.

Philadelphia started 10-1, before losing six of their final seven games including a wild card loss to the Buccaneers.

One big reason for the collapse was the lack of production from each of those veteran additions.

Kansas City repeated as Super Bowl champions, and with all the attention now focused on 2024 NFL free agency, we’re looking back at the 2023 class.
