Alabama drops Game 1 of Super Regional to Tennessee

The No. 14 Alabama softball team loses the first game of the Knoxville Super Regional to No. 3 Tennessee.

After leading 2-0 through the first two innings, the Alabama Crimson Tide softball team ranked No. 14 in the nation, lost the lead and dropped Game 1 of the Knoxville Super Regional to the No. 3 Tennessee Volunteers.

Alabama’s offense roughly picked up where it left off after scoring a plethora of runs against Southeast Louisiana in the Tuscaloosa Regional final, the bats were quickly quieted in the final five innings of play.

The series is best-of-three, which means the Crimson Tide is officially one loss away from having their 2024 season concluding. Two consecutive wins are required from Patrick Murphy’s team if they want to extend their run for a national title.

Kayla Beaver pitched into the fifth inning for Alabama, but was pulled with a final stat line of three runs, two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon as the Volunteers look to end the Crimson Tide’s season and move on.

Oklahoma beats Tennessee 9-0 to advance to WCWS semifinals

Oklahoma Sooners beat Tennessee 9-0 after a great performance from Jordy Bahl and home runs from Tiare Jennings and Kinzie Hansen.

Oklahoma beat Tennessee 9-0 in run-rule fashion thanks to an all-around dominant performance by the Sooners. Oklahoma kept its record-breaking winning streak alive too, earning their 50th win in a row against the Volunteers.

Oklahoma failed to capitalize with the bases loaded in the first, but it didn’t take long for the offense to erupt.

Tiare Jennings got the Sooners going with a home run in the second that also brought in Grace Lyons and Jayda Coleman. With Jordy Bahl dealing, 3-0 might as well have been 9-0, but OU’s offense didn’t slow down.

Oklahoma’s offense exploded in the third inning. Kinzie Hansen hit a two- homer to left field to make the score 5-0. Then, Rylie Boone hit a triple that brought in Grace Lyons and Alynah Torres to make the score 7-0.

Rylie Boone and Jayda Coleman came around on a pair of Tennessee wild pitches. The Sooners had six runs and four hits in the third inning.

Jordy Bahl got her second-straight start and earned her 20th win of the season, lowering her ERA to 1.00 in 2023. Bahl allowed just one hit and one walk

Now, Oklahoma will have to lose back-to-back games to be denied its fourth-straight trip to the Women’s College World Series Championship. The Sooners will be back in action at 11 a.m. on Monday, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

Texas and Tennessee to meet in softball super regionals

Texas softball is a series win away from the College World Series.

The matchup is set. The Texas Longhorns will face the Tennessee Lady Volunteers in college softball’s NCAA Tournament Super Regionals beginning on Friday.

The pairing pits Texas against the No. 4 team in the country in the head-to-head showdown we anticipated when the tournament bracket was announced. Both the Lady Vols and Longhorns completed 3-0 sweeps in their respective regionals. Now they clash with a trip to Oklahoma City on the line.

While Texas reached the championship series last season, Tennessee advances past the first round of games for the first time in three years. Undoubtedly the squad will be hungry to advance further, but the remaining players from last year’s Texas squad will have a say in how far they advance.

The series will begin Friday at 3 p.m. CT on ESPN2 in Knoxville with an afternoon game set for the following day. The teams will follow Friday’s 1 p.m. CT matchup between the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners and the Clemson Tigers.

Charting Texas softball’s path to the Women’s College World Series

We look at who Texas softball might have to beat to get to the College World Series.

Texas softball is on the rise after following a national championship appearance last season with a strong showing in 2023. This year saw the team win 42 games headlined by a sweep of this year’s No. 6 tournament team Oklahoma State.

Head coach Mike White’s team didn’t receive the most optimal seeding for this year’s Tournament. Despite the immediate victory of hosting a regional, the NCAA placed Texas as the No. 13 team in the bracket.

The Longhorns slot seven places behind the Oklahoma State Cowgirls despite better overall record, conference record and standing, conference tournament results and a head-to-head sweep. As a result the team will face a difficult path to the College World Series.

Here’s a look at who Texas might need to get past within its bracket to reach Oklahoma City.

SOFTBALL: Hoffmann’s Late Blast Gives Arkansas Series-Opening Win Over Tennessee

Kacie Hoffman’s three-run home run in the 6th inning powered Arkansas through Tennessee in the SEC opener.

In the series opener between No. 8 Arkansas and No. 14 Tennessee, offensive production had low quantity, but high quality.

In a game that saw all runs come across over three innings, it was a swing from Arkansas’ Kacie Hoffmann that was the deciding factor, giving Arkansas the 4-3 win, taking game one of the series in Knoxville.

Down 3-1 going to the 6th inning, Arkansas looked to shake the lineup. After a Hannah Gammill single and Sam Torres got hit by a pitch, head coach Courtney Deifel elected to remove Cally Kildow in favor of Kacie Hoffmann. Hoffmann delivered for the Razorbacks in their time of need by sending the softball over the left field wall, pushing Arkansas ahead, 4-3.

For the freshman from Elkhorn, Neb., that homer was her 4th on the year, and she has now recorded 13 RBI in her young career.

Hoffmann’s three-run blast was an answer to a three-run home run that Tennessee hit earlier in the contest. In the 3rd inning, the Lady Vols got on the board with a three-run shot off the bat of Lair Beautae to give Tennessee the early 3-0 lead.

Arkansas cut into the lead in the top of the 5th inning with a two-out single by Taylor Ellsworth to score KB Sides, trimming the Vols lead to 3-1.

Danielle Gibson led Arkansas in hits with two, while five other Razorbacks grabbed a hit each.

Mary Haff continued her streak of dominance in the circle, outdueling Tennessee’s Erin Edmoundson by striking out 11 batters and allowing three hits and three earned runs in a complete game effort.

Game two of the series between Arkansas and Tennessee is set to begin at noon CDT, and can be seen on SEC Network+.
