Temple will attempt to slow this game down to keep it close, and that will work for a bit. However, Cincinnati will start to assert itself and pull away coming out of halftime. Give me the BEARCATS -3.5 (-120) as my favorite play.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 142.5 (-105).

It will take a while for Cincinnati to get going at full force Sunday. We’ll see a low-scoring 1st half, and that will limit the total output of the game. This number is a bit too high for my liking.

TEMPLE -4.5 (-110) is a tremendous play in this road outing across town against Penn at the venerable Palestra.

Temple won last season’s meeting by an 81-72 score, snapping a 2-game loss and cover streak in this series. It hasn’t won at Penn since Jan. 20, 2018, but the Owls are facing one of the worst Quakers teams in some time and one with little confidence entering play.

Over/Under

OVER 139.5 (-115) is the lean here, ever so slightly.

While the Under has been the predominant trend for the Owls lately, it’s all about the over for the Quakers. The Over is 4-0 in the past 4 at home for Penn, while going 4-1 in the past 5 games overall, and 8-0 in the past 8 outings following a cover.

PASS. Temple is the likely lean in a vacuum (with no juice) but there is no value in the bloated price here.

Against the spread

Saint Joe’s routed Temple last season (68-49 Dec. 11). The Owls went 2-for-20 from 3-point range and 7-of-18 from the free-throw line in that game.

Look for Temple to bounce back this time around. The Owls have the better defense and figure to get to the foul line a decent number of times. TU has also shot a respectable 35.9% from 3-point range (46.9% last 3 home games).

An evenly-priced -11 would be a solid play on Temple. PASS otherwise, but keep an eye on the line.

Over/Under

Last year’s meeting fell 24 points short of the total, and the Under is 2-1 the last 3 SJU-TU games; 5-1 in the last 6 Hawks’ road games, and 5-2 in Temple’s last 7 home games vs. teams with a winning road mark (SJU is 1-0).

Temple brings back more of its talent from a year ago and was favored by 7 when these teams met last Dec. 1. The Owls won that home game 73-57.

Temple has played a tougher slate so far, though La Salle has played Villanova and Wake Forest, a couple of squads just a tick better than the Owls. Those contests netted losses by 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Temple launches a lot of 3s as part of its offense; La Salle’s early-season perimeter defense has been lacking. TAKE THE OWLS -5.5 (-115). At this number and this price, this is a small-confidence play: consider a partial-unit wager when backing Temple. A -4.5 or -5 or a better price would change the equation.

Over/Under

Several prominent models peg the game right at 134. Its a fast (La Salle)-vs. slow (Temple) clash, and a mid-130s total seems unassailable. PASS.

Although being played on a neutral court in Brooklyn, this amounts to a home game for the Storm. They will use this advantage to their advantage as they will swallow up the Owls and spit them out — St. Johns should win this game by double-digits, and I am betting they will. ST. JOHN’S -3.5 (-115) is my favorite play.

Over/Under

BET OVER 150.5 (-110).

St. Johns averages more than 85 points per game, and Temple averages 75 for and nearly 74 against. This does not bode well for keeping down the Red Storm in this game. I like this game to hit the Over relatively easily with both teams helping get there

I already pointed out that Temple has covered 4 straight games. The Owls have covered their last 4 at home as well.

The Bearcats have a solid defense, but their offense has been lacking consistency. They average 32.6 points per game and allow 21.4 PPG, which doesn’t justify a 16.5-point spread. QB Ben Bryant has 7 interceptions, and the Bearcats do not consistently win the turnover margin.

As mentioned, Cincinnati is 2-7-1 ATS and Temple is 7-3 ATS. Given the Owls’ strength at home, I would back them to cover a more than 2-TD spread here.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 50.5 (-110).

The Bearcats are 4-5-1 O/U and Temple is 5-5 O/U.

Temple has gone Over in 3 straight games. The Owls have a solid pass defense as well, ranking 13th in the nation, allowing just 181.2 yards per game. The weakness is in the rush defense which is where the Bearcats struggle.

The strength-on-weakness point coupled with the Owls’ own poor attack, averaging just 21.4 PPG, makes UNDER 50.5 (-110) the better play here.

Vanderbilt was not very competitive in its toughest test so far, Nov. 7 vs. Memphis. Temple was very sharp Friday in dispatching Villanova.

The Commodores and Owls met last season (see below). The outcome was a close game, but the inputs over 40 minutes of regulation were decidedly in favor of Temple. Vandy managed to send the contest to overtime because of 2 short bursts.

The TEMPLE OWLS -3.5 (-110) are the value side of this game, but by a relatively thin margin. Consider a partial-unit play, only going all in if it reaches TU -3.

Over/Under

These 2 teams met last season (Dec. 7), and the Over 134 hit. But that was only because the game went into overtime as 24 total points were scored in OT, and Temple won 72-68.

These are a couple slow-paced, veteran teams that are decent in defending the perimeter. They don’t combine for many other facets of play that would make this contest spiral too far past 130 points.

The Under is a definite lean, but PASS on the current total. Look for a total of about 136 before triggering some action on the Under.

Villanova is coming into this game having taken down La Salle 81-68 in its opener Monday, failing to cover as 15.5-point favorites. The Wildcats were led by G Caleb Daniels, who scored 24 points and totaled 10 rebounds. F Eric Dixon scored 20, while F Brandon Slater and G Jordan Longino both in double figures as well.

The Owls lost 76-73 in overtime to Wagner Monday, losing outright as 16-point underdogs. G Damian Dunn went off for Temple, scoring a game-high 29 points in 43 minutes. Dunn was one of three Temple players in double figures.

Dunn was the team’s 2nd-leading scorer last season with 14.9 points per game. The Owls were 17-12 last year, so this early-season loss comes as a shock.

Villanova (-240) should win, but on the road, I would pass on the moneyline due to lack of value.

Against the spread

LEAN VILLANOVA -5.5 (-110).

The Owls lost their opener, and the struggles should continue with a Wildcats team that is consistently one of the best-coached programs in the nation.

Temple G Khalif Battle struggled, scoring 16 points in its opener, which was fewer than his team-high 21.4 points per game average from a season ago. The Owls played two ranked games last season (Houston Cougars both times), losing by 38 points on the road and 5 points at home.

I expect the Wildcats to be better than their rankings suggest. Villanova beat both AAC schools by 5 or more points last season with one coming against the Cougars.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 132.5 (-110).

Nova ranked 23rd in the nation in opponents’ points per game last season and has many players from that roster. It held La Salle to 40% shooting from the field in its opener.

Temple should be more athletic and have a better defense than La Salle, so the 56% that the Wildcats shot is unlikely to be repeated. Shooting 65% from deep is insane as well, and that should undoubtedly cool off for Villanova.

Jay Wright retired, and the Kyle Neptune-era for the Cats is starting. They should still be a defensive-minded team though, and I expect this to be a slow-paced game.

The Temple Owls (1-1) welcome the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-0) to Lincoln Financial Field Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Rutgers at Temple odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Temple is coming into this game looking to hand Rutgers its first loss. The Owls lost to Duke 30-0 in their season-opener and then beat up on Lafayette 30-14.

Starting QB E.J. Warner threw for 2 touchdowns in that battle as Temple entered the intermission up 21-7. The freshman did not even have a single attempt against Duke as QB D’Wan Mathis led the team offensively.

Rutgers, which is typically on the lower end of the Big Ten programs in terms of finishing position, has yet to lose, beating Boston College by one in its opener. It then took down Wagner 66-7.

In its lone competitive game, it was starting RB Kyle Monangai that went for 78 yards and a touchdown and helped secure the win for the Scarlet Knights. Starting QB Evan Simon had just 63 passing yards in that battle.

PASS.

No thanks on -1400 for a road favorite. The price is right for the books, but I’ll pass on betting it.

Against the spread

BET RUTGERS -18.5 (-112).

The Scarlet Knights played a tough game and figured out how to win against Boston College, but this game should be more focused on the inability of the Owls.

They have a freshman quarterback under center that really only took on a team that Temple was supposed to destroy. Going from Lafayette to a Power-5 program is not going to be smooth sailing.

It lost 30-0 to Duke, and it was a quick defeat as the Blue Devils took a quite lead and never looked back. Duke was up 24-0 at half. The Owls didn’t stand a chance and had just 66 yards on the ground.

Rutgers should have a better defensive front and more explosive offense than a Blue Devils team that just got by Northwestern last weekend. Experts predicted Northwestern as the worst in the West unanimously with some putting Rutgers over Indiana in a more competitive East.

Rutgers should be able to put this one away early. Also, side note: home-field advantage with how close Rutgers is to Philadelphia should help take that away from Temple.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 42.5 (-103).

Temple didn’t score against Duke, and I envision Warner having a difficult time moving on Rutgers. Warner also isn’t a dynamic running threat, so it’ll be interesting to see how he moves in the pocket against a more aggressive front.

Considering they didn’t score on Duke and scored just 9 points in the second half against Lafayette, a game they won by just 16, Temple should find it difficult scoring.

Similarly, Rutgers scored just 22 on Boston College and may also not have the most dynamic offense.

Given that, I’ll lean the UNDER 42.5 (-103).
