European soccer as we know it may be on the verge of imploding — or at least changing in some mighty unseemly ways — but at least we can look forward to Season 2 of Ted Lasso.
Apple announced at its event today that the show will return July 23. The premise of Ted Lasso, in case you haven’t gotten to it yet, is that an oblivious American football coach is hired to coach a Premier League soccer team and charms his players into unexpected success. And, uh, that’s one particularly generous way to imagine that American influence might play out, I guess.
In fact, the influence of American businessmen accustomed to creating monopolies meant to maximize profit at the expense of history has at least helped spur on the idea of a Super League, and there’s been some justified backlash to that.
Ah, well, nevertheless, let’s not critically explore the twisted notion that there might be magic in the essential optimism of some ever-undaunted Americans. The show is fun and elevates kindness as a virtue and here in 2021 that’s enough, so go ahead and watch the trailer for Season 2.
